So, something I thought of walking down the street today- a tournament for the best special techniques in RPGs.
My thoughts:
The hypothetical tournament rating would be based on 4 qualities.
1. Effectiveness/Usefulness(Game appeal)
2. Audiovisual appeal(Relative to the rest of the game)
3. Style (Plot relevance, A character's signature, so on):
4. Memory/Personal experience(It saved your butt, it owned a SaGa boss when it sparked, etc.)
Obviously it's up to the individual person to decide which factors matter most- I'm just stating that these are all valid reasons for evaluating a contest.
The questions:
1. Only unique moves? I could see KotR doing very well in this kind of tournament- and yet there's something to be said for unique moves only.
2. Seperate divisions for PCs and bosses? Boss moves tend to be on a different scale, after all.
Also, I'll take any specific nominations here, and if there's enough support, go ahead with a bracket. The one advantage to this format is that as opposed to characters or music, personal opinion about one move is pretty simple.
-
Unique vs. non-unique seems a pretty arbitrary distinction for me. Some games just happen to have many of their interesting moves as non-unique (like FF6 Osmose or WA3 Weaken, both of which I'd be quite happy to nominate for something like this) so you're really just biasing things against games that have non-tied-to-one-character skillsets.
I'd definitely like to see both PC stuff and boss stuff in. Don't care if it's one division or two; I can see arguments for either.
-
Unique moves would exclude some things but would at least put the spotlight on signature moves, so to speak.
-
I'm not really sure what the appeal of that is. We're ranking moves, not characters. <.<
-
PCs and bosses separate, but they should both be included, yes.
I could see doing separate brackets for unique/non-unique, but eh. Definitely think both should be allowed somehow.
-
The contest already has a very subjective quality to it, so the 'hard questions' are going to even themselves in people's various opinions. For people like me or OK, who are very character-centric fans, we're probably going to vote unique signature moves for PCs very highly because we like the character and our memories of the technique are tied to them. For people that prefer/respect bosses to PCs from a mechanics standpoint, they will vote boss techs higher based on their memories of how much the move decimated them. Elfboy already pointed out that we're voting on techs, not specifically characters, so if you're discussing a non-unique tech - your memories in favor of it might include something like giving it to ALL of your playable characters (this was something I did with Ultima back when I played FF6 obsessively as a child).
Another question though - does this tournament include things like the 'E. Skill' materia as one skill? If someone nominated the Diablos GF, would we have to take Mad Rush into account? WA3/5 Mediums would fall under this category too, I imagine.
And, some nominations!
AtL2 Invincible - I really like the way this works in the DL.
PS4 Saner - I have a generally love for PSs techs, but Saner stands out, and I always tie it to Rika.
FF6 Ultima - Well, I spent so much time making everyone -learn- it... Also, Fanatic's Tower boss kicked my ass with it all the time, so high boss respect, too.
FF6 Vanish - Broken with X-Zone/Break. But even when not being used exploitatively, Physical immunity + Magical suceptibility is a cool idea.
FF6 Fenrir - I just like the status effect it gives so much. Aesthetically pleasing for its time. Fond memories.
WA4 Intrude - Not broken, and still damn cool. Awesome in the DL, and tied to Raquel for extra awesome.
Disgaea Lift/Throw - Game mechanic more than tech, not sure if it counts, but it's utilized so effectively in-game. I'd like to see enemies use it every once in a while, though. Throwing Prinnies is also great fun, and as close to plot relevent as blowing up penguins ever gets.
FFT Math skill - Broken. And that makes me happy. No DL use, but damn cool in-game.
Ar Tonelico Energy Ball - Misha's version of the infinite turn-free blast of hell. Just really cool when I consider it in a turn-based system. It's a little weird to me that the AT Song Magic doesn't sound very songlike.
TotA Force Field - Unlike Tear's hymns, which are all universally aesthetically pleasing. Nomming specifically Force Field because I like temporary invincibility moves and they see a lot of use when I play games with them.
EDIT: Soul Nomad Demon Blast - The Devourlord's ultimate attack is the most stylish thing I've ever seen created using sprites. Also, strongest attack in the game?
Not sure how many noms I'm allowed, so I just nommed a bunch trying to keep the ratings axis in mind. It can be increased or reduced as necessary, but I wanted to get cracking at it!
Really like the idea!

That's a materia and a GF, neither of which are skills. I don't even see why this is being asked.
Diablos has a summon skill, but I think it's called something else anyways.
-
Also Vanish/Break doesn't work (same reason Vanish/Imp doesn't, or Vanish/Mute, and so on; it only nullfies ID immunity). You're probably thinking of Vanish/Doom. Not that it really matters. <_<
-
I think I'd like to limit things to a specific single command- Enemy Skill/Mediums/Skillsets, things that are more comprehensive would be out. Nom Doomtrain, but not for what you can junction onto it- Nom it because you're HITTING SOMEONE WITH A DEMON TRAIN AND THAT IS METAL.
As for a nomination cap, just be reasonable. Djinn, you get bonus points for being the first person to nominate things. Redeem them at your local Bonus Points Booth.
A few example nominations of my own:
Niebelung Valesti L3 (VP)
For The Children (SH 2 version since I remember it better)
Bum Rush (FF6)
Debilitate(DDS)
Grand Stone (CT)
Wailing Soul Slash (G2)
Time of Trials (SO2)
Ness Ness Ness Ness etc... (EB)
Just to get people started thinking
-
This sounds super special awesome.
I agree with Djinn on the concept of votings evening out - yay more subjective tournaments!
Anyway, 10 noms? Anyway...
Command? (P4) - Attached to the most awesome boss of the most awesome dungeon in video-game-dom.
Megid (PS2/3/4) - PURE ANGER AS A WEAPON is awesome on concept.
Funeral Procession of the Flies of Death (DDS1, Japanese only; Also SMTN) - I just love the fucking name and concept. Death Flies is nowhere near as cool.
Nibelung Valesti Level 0 - Alicia's initial version (VP2) - I hate Alicia with a passion. Yet she has the most awesome PWS in the game. Gah, torture!
Galactic Punt (P4) - Chie is <3 Also a great support skill.
Hustle Dance (DQ8) - Sex appeal as a healing entity. This is totally my design idea.
Shadow Kill (P2) - Ok, last SMT one here. It's...a neat name, and is excellent damage that's MT. It does exactly what it says it will! Probably one of the few gameplay-centric noms here >_>
Indignation (Tales of...anything) - The signature attack of the series which always has an awesome quote attached to it. Also generally really good (except in ToL).
Attack (Fire Emblem anything) - The most memorable attack in the entire SERIES. Has to count for something.
On Switch (SH1) - Dropping the kitchen sink on an enemy is hardcore love and sex.
-
Pure gameplay noms:
Advance (FF3r)
Hastega (FF5)
Rapid Fire (FF5)
Lightning Stab (FFT)
Animation hype noms (though they're all effective in-game as well):
Rampage Ghost (SRW:OG series)
Royal Heart Breaker (SRW:OG series)
Gespenst Kick (SRW:OGs version - specifying this in particular for a reason <_<)
Sekiha Love Love Tenkyoken (SRW MX)
Goldion Crusher (SRW W)
150m Gerbera Straight (SRW W)
-
Mostly went for visuals here, but most of these are useful in-game anyways! Figured pure in-game use is somewhat less subjective and thus less fun. A few of the ones I was going to put here were already mentioned.
EDIT: All are PC skills.
Dancing Blade Chaos (Anna - Mana Khemia) - Stylish as hell. And damaging! And racks up hits for Burst!
Flower (Misha - Ar tonelico) - Dropping a tree on people? Can't really argue with that.
Meteor (Misha - Ar tonelico) - Well, you just kind of have to see it.
Ein Zecksdance (Fee - Atelier Iris 2) - Also stylish, and gamebest damage outside of (powered) items!
Assault Buster (Jude - Wild ARMs 4) - I guess I like multi-hit attacks or something.
Sonic Driver (Fairlion G/Fairlion S - Super Robot Taisen Original Generations) - Headstomps.
Blinding Blaze (Rufus - Valkyrie Profile 2) - Stylish.
Pancake (Cornet - Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure) - Name says it all.
Cymbeline (Sanaki - Fire Emblem 10) - What?
Pow Hammer (Tales series) - PIKOHAN~!
EDIT: hinode picked one of mine so I'll figure out what to replace it with later.
-

1. TimeEclipse, Saga Frontier
2. Final Attack-Phoenix, Final Fantasy 7
3. Awaken All (Order), Valkyria Chronicals
4. Wyrm, BoF5
B. AV appeal:
1. Silver Eclipse, Skies of Arcadia
2. Liberate, Parasite Eve
3. Crossfire, DDS series
4. Bloody Curse, VP2
C. Style (Plot relevance, A character's signature, so on):
1. Demon Horde Slash, G2
2. Psycho Burgundy, SN
3. Lightning Bow (Zemeckis critical hit), Brig
4. Luca's Flame Slashs, S2
D. Memory/Personal experience(It saved your butt, it owned a SaGa boss when it sparked, etc.)
1. Dragon King Slice/Dragon Cut, G1
2. Roserio Impale, Saga Frontier
3. Ignis Fatuus, TO:KoL
4. Sword of Awakening, AtL4
-
Pumpkin Parade (Phantom Brave) - Better when put on a sword, to boot! BOUNCY SWORD PARADE. Granted, not "unique" so to speak, but. - It's a PB skill, what do you expect?
Demon Blast (Soul Nomad) - Overkill? Sure. - Main
Aquary Tide (Persona 2) - Wata go down da hooooooooole... - PC combo
Delta Attack (Chrono Trigger) - TRIANGLE SPAM - Crono/Lucca/Marle
Holy (FFT) - Priest
Shooting Star (FFX) - Auron Overdrive
Sketch (FF6) - Relm
Screwdriver (Mana Khemia) - Flay
Bahamut (FF7) (I never liked the way the later ones looked.) - Summon
"Trump Card" (SRWOG1/2) - Kyosuke
-
Bah, someone already got to Rampage Ghost. Anyway, I like the idea of having boss and PC moves in separate brackets; the criteria for judging them are fairly different. NOtably, a factor in any boss attack to me would be the "OH SHIT!" scale. Boss attacks should be scary, whether for gameplay or animation reasons.
PC
Omnislash (FFVII. Cliche perhaps, but hey.)
Intrude Chain (WA4. Does this count as a single move? It should.)
Surf (Pokemon. Hell, all versions really.)
All-Out Attack! (Persona... uh, go with 4 I guess. Cooler cast.)
Sol Katti (FE7. ver Crit, naturally.)
Boss
Posession (Ansem, KH1. SUBMIT!!)
Terminate (Phantom Brave)
Dragon Orb (VP1)
Dark Matter (CT. What?)
Calamity Jane (WA3. Bosses deal 5HKOs the whole game and then "WHAT?! GINNY JUST GOT OHKOED?!!?!?!")
-
Hmm- would people prefer I actually split things up by quality? Or mash things together (With the four properties all being valid basis for judgment) as I originally intended?
-
Mashed.
-
Potatoes.
-
Mmm. With a little garlic? Delicious.
-
Garlic, onion and herb.
-
Right then, I'll give it a shot.
Eternal Zero(DDS2): Let's face it. It rapes your stats to hell. Doesn't matter how many -kaja or -nda spells you've cast, it rapes your stats and uberbuffs Brahman's. Should throw you off-guard the first time, at least.
Grand Cross(FFT): HOLY CRAP STATUS RAPE.
Moonless Gown(P3): Most invulnerability skills are just that, with nothing else. This one REFLECTS anything. Even Almighty. And you had to reset your allies.
Karma Circle(BoF5): Boss attack that does Way More Damage Than It Needs To. That alone deserves a spot.
"Fate Storm"(L:EBC): See above
Chaos Shield(L:SSSC): Used as a name for the whole LINE of that style of spells/effects. Deserves recognition for that alone. Also, is arguably a big point as for why Ghaleon is so high up (Fate Storm aside).
Tank Drop(WA4): What can be more awesome than dropping a tank on someone's head?
And the two arguable PC skills I can vouch for...
Zankantou Inazuma Juuryoku Otoshi(SRW AG):More badass than its OGs incarnation. And just awesome in general.
AERODs(XG): Animum Ether-Responsive Offensive Drones. Instantly awesome.
-
Hmm- would people prefer I actually split things up by quality? Or mash things together (With the four properties all being valid basis for judgment) as I originally intended?
I'd rather it be split, honestly, but mashed is fine too.
-
PC:
Turn Shift (WA:XF) - Needs more hax
Chain Saw (FF6) - ~
Please Eat (FFT) - Free level~
Stealth Rock (Pokemon D/P) - This is the hatenom
CHARGE SHOT (MMXCM) - YES
Boss:
Melanchoy (Lufia 1) - The ultimate uberspell of death
Quad Converge (Persona 4) - Explodey~
No Mercy (FF8) - Seifer is like the epitome of cool
Shark Missile (MMXCM) - If this doesn't win you all fail
Judgement Day (Grandia II) - If I remembered right this looked cool~
-
Hmm, may add more later, but for now...
FE 9/10 Aether - Because backflips do make everything better.
FFT Dark Holy - Better than the standard Holy
FF8 Doomtrain - Status Train of Doom, man!
CC Cactuar Summon - Dance of Death
P3 Junpei Crit - Because he's fun.
-
As for a nomination cap, just be reasonable. Djinn, you get bonus points for being the first person to nominate things. Redeem them at your local Bonus Points Booth.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was actually a place called 'Bonus Points Booth' in Japan... >.>;;
-
Crap. Stupid Japan.
-
Impulse (WA2)- No one nommed it yet... kind of a duh for me. - Anastasia/Ashley, PC
Battalion Sword (Lunar 2)- BURN BURN BURN! My way of cheesing out EBC dungeons without using too much MP. Blue Dragon Kick too, but that doesn't have the amusing sound bite. - Hiro, PC
Flameria (Lunar 1)- Mia's hit all fire attack. Always was pretty cool to me. - Mia, PC
Niebelung Valesti (VP)- Just cool to watch, and liked Lenneth's sound bite. - Lenneth, PC
Side Kick (SO3)- Ultimate cheese in combo chaining.- Fayt, PC
Sodine (Thousand Arms)- Most broken summon ever. Meis, PC
Change (GoCIV)- Turning your enemy's army into the weakest enemies in the game FOR FREE is utter, utter broken. - Jackal, PC
Randomizer (WA1o)- Just plain fun to use. Never know what you're gonna get! Unless you're me and did the percentages~- Cecilia, PC
Laser Silhouette (WA:ACF)- Plain cool to watch.- Jack, PC
-
Revitalize (Tales of Vesperia)- I've always liked the concept behind revitalize. Giant healing circles need to show up more in games.
Bloody Howling (Tales of the Abyss)-It has an awesome name and a really cool animation.
Valor (Lufia 2)- I loved the idea behind this spell. Also best healing spell in the game.
Cube Toss (Chrono Trigger)- This attack always does a ton of damage from when you get it till the end of the game.
Energy Burst (Star Ocean 3)- Just a brutal and cool looking attack.
Ice 3 (FF6)- My favorite of the final fantasy ice spells.
-
Train Wreck (Phantom Brave) - Come ON.
Oil (Final Fantasy series) - One of the greatest status effects of all time.
Morbol Virus (Final Fantasy Tactics) - This, however, is the best one.
Earth-Rending Fury (Live a Live) - Superpowerful magic attack with large AoE that has 8CT and is given to the two characters with the IQ of a rock
Personal Call (Atelier Iris 3) - Creates an extra CT bar for you, that can act three times before disappearing. Oh, it's on the fastest PC too. Turnhax gogogo
Revolution (Breath of Fire 4) - Inverting your HP is pretty neat.
Chaos Flare (Legend of Legaia) - IT IS MIGHTY
Russian Roulette (Final Fantasy X-2) - Now with 5 different status bullets and one normal one!
Gatling Gun (Live a Live) - Do not align yourself diagonally with O.Dio.
Trout's physical (Breath of Fire 2) - So, what's one of the legendary demons to do when busted? Steal your moneys in a fight to the death of course.
-
Good noms so far. I'll close 'em on Monday and sort out the brackets.
-
1.) Devour (Final Fantasy VIII)
2.) Sexy Beam (Disgaea)
3.) Don Joaquin's meteor attack from Disgaea. You know which one I'm talking about. I don't remember what it was called.
4.) Underpants Dance (Dragon Quest VIII)
5.) Puff Puff (Dragon Quest VIII)
6.) Coup de Gras (La Pucelle: Tactics)
7.) Floral Ray (Shadow Hearts: From the New World)
8.) Splash (Pokemon)
9.) Frog Drop (Final Fantasy IX)
10.) Pow Pow Hammer (Tales of Phantasia)
-
Lance, thank you. I can't believe I forgot Devour.
-
Gameplay effect picks:
Weaken (Wild Arms 3) - Beating down things with elemental weaknesses is always entertaining. Creating them yourself even moreso. Debilitator would work too except it's way too random. Weaken's just another thing in the bag of WA3 tricks that makes your offence higher than raw numbers seem to allow; Valiant would also work. Tempted to nom that~
Protective Seal (Chrono Trigger) - Cute gimmick. CT gives you too much status immunity by endgame, so what does the final boss do?
Sealed Throne (Xenosaga 2) - Because I can't help but smile at a boss that exploits the usual "save up the special gauge for bosses!!" strategy.
Quicksilver (MMXCM) - INFINITE. TURNS.
Scan (FFX) - You can take this as a general nom for scans in general if that gains more traction. <3 Giving you information for you to combat your foes with is good.
Animation/style picks:
Crimson Raid (Shadow Hearts: From the New World) - Badass points for being exactly the same as an attack used to gruesome results in cutscenes.
Ice 4 (Final Fantasy Tactics) - Laughably useless, but one of the prettiest spell animations ever if you bother to see it! I'm biased towards ice as a general rule
Dark Holy (Final Fantasy Tactics) - I am obligated to nom this, but yeah. Twisting the Holy animation around with that lovable scream is just awesome.
Nibelung Valesti 0 (Valkyrie Profile 2) - This is Alicia's first Soul Crush, for clarity. Using the crystal-teleporting mechanic in a spell animation to stylish and painful effect is fun.
-
It's all about the AV to me, sorting out based on usefulness from there. I'll use cool looking less effective moves to finish off bosses, fight randoms, etc. and sometimes... just because I feel like it.
Tank Drop (WA4): Just fought Belial, and while she only got to use it twice... it was a tank being dropped on the party. Yes.
Hand of Fate (SoA): It's Drachma flying through the air with a robotic hand that's twice his size and landing it on the enemy for massive damage and instant death.
Tatsumaki Zankantou (SRW:OGs): Real men ride other men. Also, incredibly high powered attack running off of Zengar/Zanger/Sanger's melee stat.
Genocide Circus (WA5): My favorite Combination Art animation, and one of three that I made use of aside from looking cool, due to using Carol and Rebecca a lot.
Akashic Buster (SRW:OGG) OGG version specifically, for the flourish at the end. Favorite animation for one of my favorite originals, and spammable as heck once you get the morale.
Lionheart (FF8): Omnislash, only way cooler.
Shining Binds (ToS2): All the hi-ougis got a big visual upgrade, but Shining Binds was already the best of them.
Fever Time (TotA): Fireworks!
Silver Nightmare (SoA): Puppet show!
And some really cool usefulness.
Intrude (WA4): Already have good memories of Raquel starting off turns with 75+ FP.
Grand Cross (FFany): If you aren't loaded up on Ribbons, this is THE attack you least want to see at any given time. Nearly had to retry Necron in FF9, except Berserk Freya and Zidane, the only ones left alive, took him down. Add Night Queen (P3) to this, for similar reasons.
Aura of Denial (SoA:L): The reason to use Gilder. At least, I think it blocks ID, and necessary for a few bosses here and there, like Daikokuya.
Baton Pass (PKMN): Ever fought a well played BP chain? Mostly applies to the metagame.
And this.
Metronome (PKMN): Clefable used Metronome! Clefable used Explosion!
Proooobably remember some more later.
-
Power Dance (Peppita SO3)
Fury Brand (Aeris FF7)
The End (Selphie FF8)
Recharmda (SMT2)
*Thinking*
-
The only one I can think of for now:
Sweet Trap (Persona) - I love trying to figure out how many things it can actually drop on monsters.
Oh, one more.
Magicwall (Makarakarn) (Persona) - A game where magic is the most worrying thing? Reflect! That doesn't reflect positive things.
-
Meteor Storm (Tales of Vesperia). While it may not be the shiniest attack ever (it is pretty though), this is the epitome of the most broken Tales mage ever. "Oh countless stars that wander the heavens, rain down and glorify the land! METEOR STORM!" *alternatively* "Blah blah blah METEOR STORM!!"
Invincible (Arc the Lad 2). What were you expecting? Anyways, stupidly effective in several different ways.
Toss in another nod for Alicia's NV0. Stylish as hell and the first SC you get.
Astra (FE10). So stylish, so painful. Also makes 5 damage go a long, long way.
Quick Hit (FF10): Effective.
That-one-move-Hortensia-uses-to-knock-you-all-the-way-across-the-battlefied (BoF5:DQ) Because if her defense and damage alone didn't SCREAM "Wyrm me"...
-
Seeing a few here reminds me...
Kemaro (LoL)- Wheeee useful magic! - General, PC
Totenkrueiz (Disgaea)- Probably my favorite attack in the game. - Gunner, PC
Rah-Rah Cheer (Grandia)- C'MOOOOOOOOOOOON PUFFY! - Sue, PC
-
Armaggedon (Persona 3)[PC]: Super Cheesey.
Brave Vesperia (Tales of Vesperia)[Boss]: Super Awesome.
Demon Blast (Soul Nomad)[PC]: Needs more hype.
LAZLO SMASH/Double-Edged Sword (Suikoden Tactics)[PC]: LAZLO SMASH for a reason.
Fragmented End (Tales of the Abyss)[Boss]: Because I enjoy seeing 10x PCHP in damage.
Nine Heroes(Soul Nomad)[PC]: Levin hype~
Twin Blade (Soul Nomad)[PC]: Best combo special.
-
Edited out Nukemore for Roseiro Impale.
-
Some of these might not be completely the sort of thing that were had in mind.
Renzokuken (FF8/Squall/PC)
Standard Attack with the Claiomh Solais equipped (Dragon Slayer Gaiden/Knight/PC)
Ideon Gun (SRWFF/Ideon/PC)
Surround Missile Damage Damage Damage Damage Surround Damage Damage Damage Damage Missile Damage Damage Damage Damage (Legend/Runemaster/PC)
Catastrophe (Golden Sun 2/All PCs/PC)
Jump-Sliding Attack (Terranigma/Ark/PC)
Lightning Stab (FFT/Agrias;Orlandu/PC)
Life (FFMQ/All PCs/PC)
Phantom Phoenix (SRWOGSEF/Aschen/PC)
-
System ID (Xenogears)
How could I have forgotten that one.
-
I like this idea. Wish I'd have gotten in on it sooner.
~Round Rip Saber (VP/Lucian)
~Spire (CT/Chrono+Frog) (This is one of the best looking techs ever. C'mon, guys.)
~Ripper Blast (SO2/Claude)
~DOG LASER (SoE/Dog)
~Dynamite (FFVII/Cid)
~Neibulung Valesti (VP/Lenneth) (IT SHALL BE ENGRAVED UPON YOUR -SOUL-) (I'm not a big VP fan, but god -damn- it had some stylish moves.)
~Spicule (SO2/Decus)
~Wake (BoF2/Rand) (I dunno. The idea of punching one of your fallen comrades until they are no longer dead just appeals to me)
That's all I got right now.
-
A couple more last minute ones.
Pheonix (Legend of Mana knife technique)
Climbing Garden (WA5 combo technique)
-
Okay, noms are semi-closed. I'm going to try and include as many picks as I can. If you want to ensure your picks get in, you can go back and tag the more obscure ones as Boss or PC- if I don't know, I'm not going to dig too hard, given the volume of nominations. Tournament should be up in a day or two!
-
How useful would it be if I put some of the more obscure ones up on youtube, that way people who haven't played the games could at least vote on audio/visuals? Better than nothing, but if no one cares I won't bother.
-
I'm probably going to go mostly on visuals/cool sounding idea for the most part. Gameplay worth has very little meaning to me here.
-
Okay, I'm re-opening Nominations for PC moves. After skimming some stuff out for my own arbitrary reasons while trying to keep things balanced between obscura and cliche, I'm at about 90 moves- too many to slim down to 64, too few to hit 128.
Things I've tried to avoid, so you shouldn't nom for purposes of consistency:
Generic commands
Stuff that's been heavily nominated already
Team Attacks (See Below)
I've also split Team Attacks off into a seperate category- We've got about 2 slots left there, or 18 if people want to try and push for another bracket on it. Boss attacks we have about four slots remaining, which I can fill if people don't want to.
I'm going to open noms up for another 3 days, then fiddle with the math and distribute random byes if I have to. Thanks everyone so far.
-
I'm guessing Generic commands encompasses things like "So-and-so's physical when critical", Disgaea Lift/Throw, LoD Defend... Not quite sure how anything from Fire Emblem would fit in... Since they straddle the line of 'skill' and 'weapon'... I guess FE9/10 abilities are fine (go Aether!).
Speaking of...
I want to nom Tanith's Reinforce - summons some random Pegasus Knight mooks to use as bait in FE9. Most useful ability in the game. Anything the mooks manage to kill, the experience gets sent to the team EXP pool for use in any of your other units. Godlike usefulness from a gameplay standpoint.
Radiant Howl (TotA) - Luke's Mystic Arte, add in the Ion extension for extra coolness on a replay!
Tri-Ace (SO2) - Ashton's signature move, nigh-impossible to get, but cool-looking and fun to use against Iseria Queen. Makes a return in SOBluesphere, but even MORE pixelated!
Silent Lake (S2/3) - Pretty, deadly, Chris' signature move (along with Seed and a few others), and resistance is futile.
Spell-Binding Eye (G2) - As useful as it is stylish! Millenia's signature move (in the DL anyway... I suppose Fallen Wings is closer).
I could easily come up with 30 more moves on my own, but I suppose everyone else deserves a chance to nom new things...
EDIT: Because I'm surprised no one's nommed it, yet.
Diamond Dust (FFX Shiva Overdrive) - Because the fingersnap that shatters worlds at the end is so ridiculously stylish.
-Djinn
-
Anything the mooks manage to kill, the experience gets sent to the team EXP pool for use in any of your other units.
No it doesn't. (Still a good ability anyway, though.)
-

What? Really? I'm 100% positive I asked this question in chat, and someone told me it was so. I remember trying to keep track of the EXP pool gain during my own playthrough to confirm it, but results never quite matched up.
Since I know you've played FE9 roughly 7 billion times, I'm sure you're right, but could you explain the EXP pool mechanics to me?
-Djinn
-
Lost Fon Drive (TotA) - Luke's Mystic Arte, add in the Ion extension for extra coolness on a replay!
Lost Fon Drive doesn't extend into Ion. Radiant Howl extends into Ion. And both are only available on replay.
-
Throwing in some more SRW for combo attacks http://youtube.com/watch?v=e6qQyd0i8CI Final Dynamic Special, involves Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, Getter 1, and Grendizer. SRW has the coolest attack animations for everything ever.
Er... was gonna post more, but now I think I'll just drool over SRW games I may never play for now.

Oooh, thanks for catching this!
Fixed!
-
I've tested this explicitly since it's a common rumour.
Bonus Exp? You get a certain amount for accomplishing certain specific tasks in maps (like not killing hostages in a certain chapter), a certain amount for just clearing chapters in some cases, and the majority from completing chapters quickly (faster = more Bonus Exp, though there will be a limit).
http://www.serenesforest.net/fe9/bonus_exp.htm
-
actually I am pretty sure at least in FE10 experience by allied units DOES go into the exp pool. (how else do you get a value ending in not 0 when you havent used any up?) Maybe in FE9 it doesnt though.
Also I nominate Claudes Ripper Blast from Star Ocean 2 (If only for the Pear into peaches joke)
Also the move where Jessica from Mana Khemia drops the random things on the enemies and sometimes its a fish :P
Also DSC from SaGa frontier. Awesome move.

That's correct. (That's also exactly why FE10 changed the scale of Bonus Exp so that you got more but each point was less effective, otherwise you'd get way too much just by letting partner units do all the work.)

How useful would it be if I put some of the more obscure ones up on youtube, that way people who haven't played the games could at least vote on audio/visuals? Better than nothing, but if no one cares I won't bother.
Just noting that I think this is a good idea. Especially for the SRW attacks I've never seen but I'm hearing lots of hype for the AV.

I can Youtube up/hunt down with /m/ reference pretty much anything significant ever.
In fact I'm having a hard time not nomming about a dozen more attacks from SRW Z alone.

Deadly Fingertips - Suikoden 2
I like the way it deals with the mooks it hits. On the other hand...
Hell - Suikoden 1
This also just plain amuses me. Not to mention it's a neat instant win ability.

Seeing UltraDude's comments makes me want to request game/series limits. I like a SRW animation now and then but I really don't want to wade through a bunch of them. Haven't actually combed the noms to see if they're necessary, but just on principle.

New noms!
SKY DRAGON SLASH (YOU WILL BE DEFEATED!! Er, Grandia II.)
Coup de Grace (La Pucelle)
Spacial Rend (Pokemon! Honestly I just love the name.)
Hellfire (Suikoden III)
Ginny Crit (Wild ARMs 3. They all count really, but Ginny wins between them.)
-
A couple of Fire Emblem character unique weapons I used, like but general commands I skipped. For example, Sol Katti and Aether both made it in. There have been some cuts because of over-representation (VP2 is maxed with three noms already, for example). I apologize to the SRW fans for my totally arbitrary distinction as well, but I've tried to keep to OG-type things at most. We all know Mazinger Z is awesome, so to keep it more RPG focused, they've been sidelined.
Also hey, my first Suikoden noms. Would you believe it was almost entirely ignored?

In light of the recent changes I am striking the following and listing here for completeness:
Standard Attack with the Claiomh Solais equipped (Dragon Slayer Gaiden/Knight/PC)
Ideon Gun (SRWFF/Ideon/PC)
Jump-Sliding Attack (Terranigma/Ark/PC)
And adding:
Broken Time Bomb (Megaman Starforce Pegasus/Megaman/PC)
Folder Backup (Megaman BN 3/Megaman.EXE/PC)
Tear Gas (Star Ocean 2/Chisato/PC)
Also bringing up for consideration's sake:
Talon2 Attack/E-Ray (Talon2/FFL3/NPC)
which is theoretically just Talon2's generic attack, but there's only the one Talon2 and it's not PC controlled.

You still need more nominations?
1. Terra's Morph (Final Fantasy VI)
2. Jump (Final Fantasy series)
3. VegOut (Chrono Cross)
4. Alpha on One (Star Ocean: Second Story)
5. Dreaded Dragon (Valkyrie Profile)
6. Twin Dragon Lash (Dragon Quest VIII)
7. Diminuendo (Baten Kaitos)
8. Nurse (Tales of Symphonia)
9. Iainuki (Ogre Battle)
10. Goodbye Tink! (Disgaea 2)
