Title: Is the NR dead?
Post by: Lezard Valeth on January 01, 2010, 12:38:06 AM
:( Sigh, nothing lasts forever I suppose. :(

Okay, what about English patched games? Do they fall into this category? I wanted to include Chaos Wars but due to the very high stats of the characters I decided against it.

Yeah, Nr's dead. It's time is past in every sense of the word.

Clearly it needs to be revived in some form. Look! It has outside interest and everything!

Out of curiosity, why did NR die? Lack of interest/votes?

Both, plus assembling it was a massive pain on all ends.

Getting rid of the writeup portion would be a start, but even then it just doesn't justify the votecount.

Writing up the NR was a load of fun, though.

Not Ranked was fun while it lasted. I enjoyed it, for what it's worth. I wouldn't mind seeing it return in a limited capacity (even if it's just a once-a-year deal).

Bring it back as a tournament board series imo.

fuck putting it back on the main site.

Some main-site exposure would be nice, though. Bonus match-style is go.

:) Don't worry the NR is back as a bonus match.  ;-)

Perhaps inspired by the unranked bonus match but The God knows best. Ask Djinnandtonic about it.

Ask Djinnandtonic about it.

;) I'll be sure to do that. ;)

Agree about taking NR Down.

However, I think that having NR as a Tournament was where the major mistake was.

Instead, I would like to see how a serial series of matches would work.  i.e. you have 2 matches between a NR and a ranked opponent and if at least one NR wins, they meet in a championship round.  If neither NR wins, two more NRs are chosen.  If you keep winning, you keep playing (like a game show; until you win 4-in-a-row: if you're ranked, you're done.  If you're NR, you get to fight 2 ranked and 2 NR in the next class for a possible promotion.)  Of course, in order to "win", a NR not only has to win votes, but the totals have to exceed a minimum.

(Of course, if we change the promotion board to 2 Ranked in the NR's present class and 2 ranked in the next class, then it could make for good Bonus Match material.  "How will <NR> Fare?")

I'll have to see if I have the time in the coming term.  Worst comes to worse, I may do something in May.

Yes do this.  I'd be willing to try and set it up myself if people were interested (and would help me with ideas).

Though we do already have Tourney of Interest anyway, so I dunno.

Does Tourney of Interest keep records though?

Records are clearly the only reason to have something on-site as opposed to forum-based.

(Well, you can argue write-ups and bios, too, but no one's proposing NR for that, it seems...)

ahahah.  ha.  ahah.  Records.

Well, why don't we take Tourney of Interest and, if it's ok with the creator, revive it as NR a bit?  It can have its own board, we can set up rankings, etc.  Tal, Djinn, and I'd be interested.

Eh.  personally I find that the trial and error, trying out ridiculously new games, and the intentional trainwrecking are all part of the fun.  Keeping records and the like suggests either going away from created brackets (bad mojo) or making a point to reusing the same characters, which while it does happen as a means to fill out space isn't really intentional either.  Well, aside from Arceus.  So if we're not doing either of those things, I have to wonder what the point of turning it into a bigger production is.

In my opinion, let us take what the question means ...

" Is the NR dead?"

Since the term dead was used and it somewhat points out that the said NR already don't exist ...

Therefore ...

NR is not yet dead . It is only inactive in a sense.

Hm, okay, question: if the NR is dead, should we move this forum (to be, say, a sub-forum of Tournaments)?  Seems like it's not doing much in its current location.

Probably. I mean, we may still open NR for a season if we ever feel like there's a bunch of potential games that need a tourney, so it's better than deleting it entirely.

Move it.

Move it into the graveyard (It's just a writeup forum, so better there than attached to tourneys, I think).

Done.
