I talked a little about this right after the con, but Gate's topic reminded to throw this up. Anyway. there was talk about doing this in December of this year, and hosting it somewhere besides Newport news. (I am not volunteering you by gunpoint Ciddy~). Thoughts on locations/times that would work for people, and anyone who'd want to host?
-
Id be interested, but I can't host until my situation stanilizes.
-
NOT Newport News again. We did that 2 years in a row, and its a bitch to get to for me.
-
As long as it's after December 8th or so, I'm good (yay LA trip for a week!).
I'm open for hosting this year, but since no one wanted to come to me last year, I assume that stands this year as well.
I'm in for whatever, though I really am tempted to fly in this year if the distance is > 3-4 hours or so.
-
I'm in. Dunno how well December will work with my unknown school schedule, but I'm interested and willing. I will also have no financial complaints since I've taken out loans (crossing fingers here. . .). I do not want it to be some place cold, because I will already be some place cold. I heard Soppy was interested in hosting, and I am suggesting Soppy before he says it here.
-
That was for DLC, Idun.
-
I have no idea what my living situation will be so hosting is out, but I'll most likely be living in VA by that point so I won't miss the meetup.
-
So...I guess I kinda have a Condo I own now and therefore could theoretically host. Atlanta's probably a damn long ways for most people, though (seeing as Newport News was a shockingly expensive flight for me last year).
-
Oddly, I wouldn't mind flying down to Atlanta or Florida, mostly cause well, I guess in Principle, I don't feel going to the Airport for a genuine flight of 2 hours or so is as big a deal as going to one for a mere short flight like Newport news. yes, I am weird, though in general, I just want something different this year I guess.
-
Atlanta's fine for me!
-
Atlanta would be hard for me to get to just due to distance (600 mile drive is too much, and airfare's like 350). May be able to drag Pyro into carpooling though.
-
Atlanta would work great for me. I might even get a chance to see my sister who lives up there.
-
I dunno about December fares, but November Newport News to Atlanta is like 160~
-
Price of flying goes up 140-160~ bucks after mid november.
-
Then meet then~?
-
Considering that several of the people who have expressed interest in going are still in college or work at one, that is very unlikely.
-
Heh, if I only I could get my usual internet buds to meet in Atlanta... great hub.
-
Potentially interested in this if the hosting location ends up not too far away. Flying is a no go due to money but I'm decently used to long drives so that's a possibility for me.
-
Oh. Well. For a minimeet in Atlanta, I just feel pretty retarded flying back to where I just came from for three-ish days. Granted, I wouldn't have to pay my mom for me to stay . . . eh, we'll see with my schedule, or whatever I have going on around this time. But it will be quite short notice, for either NPN or Atlanta.
-
We going with Atlanta then? Shale/Cid sound like they aren't up for hosting.
-
This is an accurate statement, you can basically count me out just due to lack of time off.
-
So we're meeting in Atlanta? Ok, so all we need is dates, right?
Oh, one date that is out for me is the 12th of November (taking the Praxis then.)
-
The weekend of the 3rd and the 10th are bad for me (in December). Other than that, should be able to make anything.
-
10th is out for me, I have a final (what the fuck!?) that weekend. 15th-18th of december then?
-
10th is out for me, I have a final (what the fuck!?) that weekend. 15th-18th of december then?
Offhand, that sounds fine, but nothing is definite right now, etc.
-
I'm down for that. Excellent timing for me, actually.
-
10th is out for me, I have a final (what the fuck!?) that weekend. 15th-18th of december then?
Well um, I actually haven't booked my winter vacation yet, but I might actually want to leave for Canada on like December 17. I love you guys dearly and all, but my siblings and parents live in four different cities on two different continents, and we try to make our Christmas visits overlap, and we haven't made travel plans yet. So...those dates might be ok, but then again I also might not be in town.
-
The entire month of December is out for me. Too many presentations, too many panels to be on to even think about making time. If it's in November, I have.. to have my research papers turned in by then so if it's around then, totally fine. If not, I may see you guys at the Con so should I make it!
-
December 15th-18th for me might be a bit tough to request off on as well for work, given retail, so that may not be the best of options either. I don't think its IMPOSSIBLE, just I'd need to request off soon and since we don't have finalized details that may not be plausible.
-
It looks like I will in fact be able to host this! Is there still interest in northern VA?
-
Depends on if we have the exact time period narrowed down!
-
See OK. As long as I can get a ride somehow, I will definitely go.
-
My schedule's pretty much open aside from the weekend after Thanksgiving. If people want to do early-ish November to cut down on travel costs, that's cool.
-
I don't see any problems with early-ish NOvember other than "we'd have to decide to do it soon so people can request off!" I already outlined the exact dates in November that are bad.
Early December should be fine too. Basically, anytime before the Christmas Season gets really out of hand and its still possible to request days off (outside of the date I specified before.) December 17th~ is...really close to when they'd start making black out dates so...
-
Anytime in November is fine, except I do request that it not be the same week as the westcoast minimeet, as I'm getting lots of pressure to attend that one.
-
Early November is definitely out for me. The best I can manage is probably a week within December (around 10th - 25th?). If it doesn't fall in there, I'm most likely out.
-
So, is Atlanta hosting, or Shale? I'm up for north VA, since it's closer to me, but whatever works for the majority is best.
And if it is MC or Shale in charge, give us specific dates, and we'll plan - it's already! I'm able to do basically any period of time except for the few I mentioned in the early parts of December (and apparently a wedding on November 13th or so I was told about last night...;_;).
-
I don't really care who hosts. Just...if I'm hosting, it had better be on a weekend when I'm actually in town (i.e. not late December, and not the same time as the west coast minimeet).
-
Someone roll the dice in chat.
I need to pen you gaiz in. Cmon.
-
Late December's out for me, because I might be working retail and good luck getting time off near Christmas. So if early December is also a no-go and late November hits the increased airfare, how about the first weekend in November?
-
First Weekend in November should be doable for me, but again, we'd need to decide like NOW if we are to do it then.
-
Seems like a go with my syllabi. I support this first week, just need to know the specific days. (PS, Whitney Chadwick is coming in on Tues, so I totally will not do a Tues)
-

Ok, so we're talking like...4th (Friday) - 7th (Monday)?
-
That should work for me - I'll just have my students take the day off on Friday/Monday. Or force a resident to do it instead.
We'll see. Either way, I should be able to make it at some point.
-
Ok, so we're talking like...4th (Friday) - 7th (Monday)?
I was thinking 4th-6th, but if enough people would be around to do stuff on the 7th that could happen.
-
So...have we finalized a location yet? We should probably do that really soon so people can start working on appropriate travel arrangements.
-
Timing sounds fine for me, but I would prefer Atlanta for a hosting site. For one, it's in driving range. And it's cheaper for me if flying becomes an option.
Would probably still be able to attend a VA DLCon, but it's less sure.
-
With my ever-murky employment situation, I can't commit to an Atlanta con.
-
I feel like if we pick a date (I agree with the 4-6 or 7th), then people will be able to calculate the costs. . . It's almost November (in my book for plane tickets at least)
-
I would prefer VA only cause I'd prefer going on a bus (means I won't have to bother my parents for a ride to the airport and all that) than a plane for a short trip, but I can probably wing either. I just kind of want to get some finalized data since the date is coming up close, and I want to get the travel arrangements done ASAP.
So yeah, preference to VA, but I'll probably do Atlanta too.
-
Preference for VA since it'd be a lot more possible for me to get a ride that way.
-
Same, eyah. Also we need to pick a date like this weekend.
-
There seems to be 100% consensus on a date.
Location is the one that's in dispute (although it looks like more people are saying VA).
-
we doing VA then?
-
So far it seems that way, but not everybody has weighed in recently. Anybody who absolutely can't do VA?
-
Anybody who absolutely can't do VA?
I don't know that I can't, but there's decent odds I'd skip a VA meetup.
More of a "I'd be crazy to fly to two different minimeets one week apart from each other, and it's actually probably cheaper to fly from Atlanta to SF than Atlanta to VA."
-

While it would be awesome to see you at Minimeet, at the same time, do whatever is most convenient for you and don't feel pressured! I'm aware you recognize this but...uhh...actually I don't know where I'm going with this other than "Sounds like a shame but can't always win it"...providing we go the VA route.

The fares I've seen has DC be a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than SFO, for what it's worth. (From Atlanta)
-
I think you should come to San Francisco because I want you to come. (*selfish*)
-
So it's Virginia then. *Whips people into it*
-
Shaley-poo, can you PM me the address? I'll be driving there (I've driven that way enough already).
-
Everyone flies into Newport News?
-
If you're flying, fly into Washington DC. Shale lives near there.
-
I'm about 15 miles from both Dulles and Ronald Reagan airports, so people can use either one. If people could use the same one for ease of pickup and dropoff, that would be nice.
Also, if we're settled on VA, then here is your official information post:

IMPORTANT LODGING INFORMATION:
I have a couch big enough to sleep on, a loveseat big enough for a short person to sleep on and a futon that folds out into a full-size bed. Also an easy chair if somebody gets really desperate. Anybody else who wants to stay at my apartment is welcome, but will be sleeping on the floor. Those who can bring air mattresses and/or sleeping bags will find them useful, especially since the living room has an uncarpeted tile foor.
Those who prefer actual beds should check out the nearby Comfort Inn (Vienna) or Mariott (Tysons Corner) hotels.
ACTIVITIES
Gaming! I have a 360 and Wii connected to one TV, a PS2 connected to another in the den, and a gaming-capable PC. Extra controllers for the Wii or 360 would be helpful, as I don't have four for either one. Available multiplayer games include You Don't Know Jack, Smash, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, BlazBlue CS, Soul Calibur, NSMB. If anybody wants to play a Sony exclusive, BYOPS3.
Washington DC! I live right near the nation's capital and it kicks ass. If people want to do sightseeing that can be arranged, but I'd really like to get in some Smithsonian time if there's interest.
Game store! Unfortunately it's just a GameStop.
Anything else people want to do!
TRAVEL SCHEDULE
Arrivals
OK: 11:39 a.m. at Dulles International Airport
Meeple: 12:50 p.m. at Washington, D.C. Greyhound Bus Terminal
Departures
OK: 12:20 p.m. from Dulles International Airport
Meeple: 2 p.m. from Washington, D.C. Greyhound Bus Terminal
-
Assuming I can make it, my PS3 will be there. I don't have much in the way of multiplayer games for it and only one PS3 pad though[*eyes pyro and super*].
-
Right now, Jetblue is my cheapest go - 174 total roundtrip. Am really considering it now, just gotta figure out logistics.
-
I notice I am not on that list of attendees even though I stated I am pretty sure I'm coming...
-
About a 4 hour drive from where I am - not on the way to pick anyone up that I know of, but hells yeah I'll be coming.
Are you going to be around all day on Friday? My plan is to arrive Friday afternoon or so and leave Sunday morning (unfortunately, I can't take off Monday). I plan to drive, since I expect you may need another car for any transportation. If not, though, I may fly in.
We did movies last time, and I'd like to do the same again, as that was fun and awesome - particularly for people who haven't seen some awesome ones we watched (Dogma, Army of Darkness, etc.). I'll bring my laptop, and maybe let people watch Laggy cannon rush me in SC2 >_> Any specific games, etc.? I actually have a PS3 controller, so I'll bring that. DVDs, books, games, etc.? I'll bring along BANG! so we can actually play it this year >_>
I...may do a hotel? I can actually vouch for the Tyson's Corner one being good (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/wastc-tysons-corner-marriott/) as I stayed there when doing some job interviews at Inova-Fairfax. I'm fine staying on the floor, of course, or a spare closet if you have one.
I'm ok with going to DC, but I've been there and seen pretty much everything there over the last few years I've been there (especially with the job interviews I've had in the city - a lot of places did some touring there), so if we don't, that's fine with me. Haven't been to the Smithsonian in a while, though (6 years or so), so I'd be good with going there again if there's enough interest.
-
Actually, Shale: arrive at Dulles at 1139 on Friday, flight leaves on Sunday at 1220. Will that work? I can do a later arrival on Friday if you want.
-
Can definitely make it if there's no objection with me coming, will be driving because I have basically done that exact same drive twice before when visiting a friend in Fairfax. I can probably arrange it so that I arrive in time to pick people up at an airport if that would help.
Also since Shale is apparently originally from my area, I can totally pick up local delicacies that may not be present in Virginia if he wants(Tastykakes???!!!).
-
Sweet.
I've arranged to get the day off from work on Friday, so whenever people want to start showing up will be fine.
-
I'll either leave home late thursday or very early friday, depending on who I'm driving with. and yes, I'm borrowing a GPS just in case.
-
Hope you enjoy your time in Delaware, Super.
-
Okay, so I think I can go if I can carpool at least -some- of the way with someone?
Who all is coming by car? And are any of them between Florida and Virginia?
-
Hope you enjoy your time in Delaware, Super.
Delaware? Man, you have a lot of confidence in him - I'd expect him to make it to the West Coast Mini-Meet instead.
-
Tentative Schedule: Arrive on the 4th at 12:50 PM at the Greyhound Station. As I said, I am fine with waiting if I have too.
Leaving on the 6th at 2 PM from the same place.
Its the DC Greyhound station, right?
-
Yep. It's in downtown DC.
First post updated with a nascent travel schedule.
-
Oh yeah. PS3 owners, bring a spare controller if you have one? I'd like to get some group HoD in, to show the game off to Shale/OK. (Can have Xer bring his console since he has most of the DLC)
-
You mean I have all of the DLC. And I was gonna bring my PS3 to show off Tales of Xillia anyways.
-
So... No hope of getting any help with a ride there from Florida?
I may still be able to make it, but Virginia is a bit far to drive and it's too late to get a cheap plane ticket.
-
Just confirming that the times listed are finalized given I have just bought my ticket, so yeah.
-
note for people crashing at Shale's: Bring a pillow/blanket. I know Pyro has an air mattress so I'll drag that along too. I'm also bringing my PS3 controller.
Edit: Djinn, if you are making that drive, let me/Pyro know. Can pick up part of the drive with us at least.
-
Also, as discussed in chat, I'm tentatively earmarking Saturday afternoon/evening for heading into DC, assuming nobody is violently opposed to the idea. We'd drive a few miles to the closest subway station and ride that into the city, hit up some Smithsonian buildings and whatever else people feel like doing. Riding the subway is about $3 each way, and entry to the museums and various DC monuments and federal buildings is free. As of now I'm not seeing any particular free time for bowling unless people would be up for it on Friday.
-
I really really really hate to do this, but I may have to cancel my involvement in the minimeet. Donna, my fiancee, is currently hospitalized with a condition that may require surgery and a two-week stay in the hospital. The doctors say there's a good chance medication will have her back on her feet by Wednesday, and if so, awesome, we should be on and I'll be happy. If that does not pan out, though, I am extremely not free this weekend. Sorry, you guys are awesome, but I'm not getting married to any of you.
Deepest apologies to OK and Meeple. I'm not telling anybody not to come to DC, of course. But I won't be around to host if I'm at the hospital all weekend.
I'll keep you posted.
-
I'll spread the word.
-
And for those who've missed the Good Morning topic
Given the recent happenings at CCP, it's a really bad time for me to be doing a minimeet (I will likely be skipping both east and west coast meets) and I certainly cannot host.
-
Sorry to hear Donna's feeling out of sorts again Shale. Best of luck/wishes there~
-
EVERYONE: Got phone numbers and addresses? I'm putting together a list of those just in case. PM me if you need anyone's contact information. Glen: I'll need your cell, on that note.
-
WHEW.
Hospital stay is over. Fiance is out of the woods. Minimeet is go.
One catch: I've missed so much work over the past three days that I can't in good conscience take all of Friday off. I can still host, but the early-afternoon hanging out will have to happen elsewhere, whether that's Cid's place, a hotel room or some back alley in DC. Meeple and OK, if you need help setting up a cab or something to get you out of the airport/bus depot, let me know.
-
Messages sent out with addresses, phone numbers, etc. If anything's missing, just ask.
-
Uggh, I really hate to have to say this, but I seemed to have spontaneously contracted a really bad cold.
Need to apologize because I most likely can't make it which means someone else will have to pick up meeple.
Really sorry about this.
-
It's okay. Now we can make poor Ciddy drive into DC!
-
Shale, glad to hear Donna is better.
Unfortunately, like Glen, I had something come up (non-work-related) today that, sadly, will necessitate me staying here through this weekend. I am dreadfully sorry, and disappointed, but I do have to be here to take care of things.
Have fun - hopefully I'll just see everyone at DL Con.
;_;
-
I'm going to assume that's a bad joke because strangling you would surely be more trouble than it's worth.
For anyone stopping off here before Shale's place tomorrow: I usually get home around 3:30, so if you get here notably before that and need to kill time, there are plenty of places to get lunch or something at Reston town center. It's pretty hard to miss in my neighborhood, just aim for the high-rise apartment buildings looming nearby on the horizon. Also, my apartment complex has visitor parking spaces marked out. Use them unless you like getting towed!
-
If you're implying that my neck is fat, I will mail you anthrax
-
That was aimed at me for the DC crack.
-
Indeed, we were typing at the same time.
I'd rather cover cab fare for Meeple than drive there myself. >.> Especially given it'll be pushing rush hour by the time I reach him. I mean, I'll go if no one else can, but oh god D.C. at that hour.
-
The New York Avenue Metro station is right next door to the Greyhound bus station anyway. It's one block away. Granted, it's one block in the border area of "scary DC" but I'm sure Meeple is a brave soul. Just take the Red line south, transfer at Metro Center, and take the Orange or Blue line to Rosslyn. No need to subject others to DC driving; there are some lines that just shouldn't be crossed.
-
I have done it before, so there's probably less grounds for complaint here.
-
Cuuuuuuuurses
Not like I can point fingers about life getting in the way of the meetup, I guess. Hope things look up soon.
-
Also, Super tells me MEeple's pickup/Metro trip has been resolved while I was grocery shopping, so thanks for that. I owe you people a beer.
-
I think that went pretty well! Thanks to everybody for making the trip out. Hope you all got home safely!
-
i hurd u can cook nom noms?
-
Was a lot of fun. We need more You Don't Know Jack at the next DLCon/Minimeet/whatever, even though I suck at that game.
-
Trip report: Got picked up by Pyro from Virginia beach at 7:30, getting up kicking and screaming. We got to Richmond around 9:30, picked up Xer, got parked in DC around 11:45, had an hour to kill. We killed about a half hour waiting for Meeple at the bus station in DC. Picked him up, wandered over to a barnes and noble and Best buy in Reston near Cid's, went to his apartment, waited for him to get home. Cid showed off the new batman game (awesome) and we played a bunch of HoD till Shale was ready. The actual time at Shale's was awesome, we spend times playing games, watching movies, and bullshitting. There were trip outs for food, game store runs, and general insanity whenever we gathered. I read scott pilgrim the manga and a turtledove short story collection in there too, so good times.
The good: Local co-op HoD was absolute insanity and a blast; the LA noir game shale was playing looked like a must play. Why didn't you try to make me play it Grefter?!?! (For the record Grefter kicked everyone he could into the game).
The bad: OK and Glen having to cancel.
The ugly: That mall. What the fuck was that shit?
-
If you didn't show off the black and white mode of LA Noire I'm gonna smack you
-
Racist.
In all seriousness, black and white mode? The game didn't come with a manual and I haven't FAQ'd, so anything that doesn't have an in-game tutorial I probably don't know about.
-
It's in the options somewhere, makes the entire game monochromatic for that hard-boiled 50s feel.
-
That is all well and good, but you don't get to see how insanely douchey Douchecoat's douchey coat is.
For serious, douchiest coat ever.
-
You sound a little upset...Partner (http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii271/DiseasedTempest/emot-smug.gif)
-
Glad everyone had a great time :) Good company, good food, good gaming is what meet ups are made of. I know I enjoyed it (two years ago, still haven't met Shale yet either =()~
I still have fond memories of Pyro playing SotC, Xer playing Dead Rising and fighting games, Meeple w/th his PSP/Dissidia ... and everyone getting tortured by Eternal Sonata's ending~
-

Now that I'm in VA we'll have to fix that the next time you come to the States. Road trip!
-
Both come to Florida. Problem solved.
-
Uhmmmm Shale, do you have two Wii power supplies lying around your place? I can't find mine and I fear I may have brought it without realizing and left it lying around there.
-
You didn't actually plug it in, right? I think I remember that we used mine for that.
I'll check the nooks and crannies of my living room once I'm home.
-
Yeah I am very sure we used your wii's plugins too, which is why I'm so puzzled as to why I can't find it here at home.
