Any reason we shouldn't migrate to it from irc? Seems more robust and user-friendly to me.
-
I'm in favor of it. Create a #rpgdl Discord and we'll be good.
The only possible drawback is losing IRC bots, and most of them don't run anymore anyway.
EDIT: It was one off-hand comment about specific bots like Hatbot which haven't run for years. Sheesh. Okay okay okay we can safely consider re-enabling bots an advantage of Discord, you win, I wasn't actually fighting this to begin with and was in favor of moving to Discord anyway, etc.

Compared to IRC, Discord doesn't run on all platforms, is not anywhere near as configurable, can be very difficult to sort through long-term logs, and is centralized, proprietary and beholden to a single corporation that is trying to make it into a for-profit service. It's fine, I've been using it more (and there are already a few DL servers), but I think I'll always want IRC around too.
-
I've spent time using both and prefer IRC's no-frills B&W to Discord's display. I find it a lot easier to scroll through a lot of old lines to get caught up after being away for a while in IRC than in Discord.
-
Is there some me hidden irc magic that lets you see all the stuff that was said when uou were disconnected?
-
Discord servers are ridiculously easy to set up if you want to give it a trial run.
-
I love Discord but straight up can't use it anywhere I have time to actually hang out in DL chat (work, mobile, specifically). Whereas IRC makes downtime at work into DL time~

Is the android app really bad? I use the iOS version. To swear at guildies and Zenny all the time.
-
I have personally found Discord nothing but user-friendly and mostly superior to IRC (aside from IRC being more lightweight, which is a nice advantage, mind). The Android app is good, but does have a couple of minor bugs I've noticed.
Still, if it's not something the majority of the community wants, well, there's a good reason not to move over.

I don't really care; don't have a problem with either. El Cid and Jim have hit on what I consider the main advantage of each already, though neither is a dealbreaker for me.
Though does Discord seriously not have bots for dicerolls etc.? For a program that's supposed to be about chat for gamers that's really weird.
-
I'm personally fine with whatever. I think an advantage of IRC has is that it's already established for us, though this isn't to say we can do a gradual shift in having both running concurrently and people slowly migrate from one to the other.
-
Discord has all kinds of bots and they aren't terribly hard to program either, I'm not sure why that's being mentioned as a negative.

Thread revivification.
It seems like we stuck with (at least officially) IRC, but if there is a dedicated discord chat floating around, especially if any of us want to game together, could someone throw a brotha a link?

SnowFire posted this in the DLCon topic but just so you're all aware, there's an RPGDL discord now and here's the address. The link expires after a certain number of joins, so if it doesn't work for you, pm SnowFire for an invite.
