Um...  Going out on a limb and saying Regal Bryant?

There's...  Really strange logic involved, best not to ask.

I actually considered that myself, so I'm guessing the logic isn't too strange.  :P

...how would people react to a Metagross/Gengar lead-off?

In a double-battle, my starter would be even more standard and expected (Crobat/Breloom status-whoring!) so I'd probably aim for Bite+King's Rock flinch on the Gengar and hope the Breloom's Spore goes through before Metagross does anything.

Godlike:
Sora (Kingdom Hearts Series) vs Guv (Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King) - Guv. I can't vote much DQ8, but I know enough to know Guv takes this pretty easily.

Heavy:
Lucas (Mother 3) vs Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII) - This is so not close in my mind that it's just painful.

It's somewhat depressing that I can vote on more first-round matches here than I can in the actual DL season.

I wouldn't say you should -avoid- elements. I'd just say they're not as useful in the DL as they are in-game. If your opponent has a resistance to an elemental attack, you don't use it, simple as that.

RPGDL Discussion / DL Glossary?
« on: June 06, 2009, 03:46:09 PM »
Just a thought I had, looking at some of the stat topic discussions. For the newcomers to the site, would it be possible to have some sort of glossary of definitions as a sticky here? (If there is one already somewhere, I couldn't find it. ;o)

Just noticed some acronyms & phrases get used a lot, and everyone just assumes everyone knows them. Most notable ones I've noticed are ITE, ITD, ID, YMMV and Heal-Lock (not sure this needs to be explained, but no harm in it, right?)

Ack, I knew there was something I was doing wrong here. I was thinking from attack-basis, not defence, hence the talk of hitting weaknesses/resistances. Whoops. ^^'

...Okay, I've spent the last 20 minutes thinking, and I've still got nothing. I had some Togekiss set that would still be screwed over by T1 status or Ice or Lightning. >_>
That Heracross still doesn't look like H/G to me... I'm thinking, for Pokemon, it's gonna have to be a (pseudo-)legendary in order to make it H/G. >__<

Lum was for the Machamp, not the Heracross. That said, I did forget about the Flame Orb thing when talking about Hera earlier. Wind and Fire are still major problems, especially since it won't take much Wind to kill it (4x), so I'm thinking Lum!Machamp would beat Heracross still. It's close, though.

Hmm. I'd still say Lum Berry will probably serve him better, if only to fend off Turn 1 status. Judging from the Speed value you gave (having not checked the stat topics), Pokemon are Lv 50 for this. In that case, Machamp can have the 117 Speed and still have 182 Attack. I'm thinking damage isn't gonna be Machamp's problem, which is why I'm still inclined to go with the Lum Berry.
What do others think~?

I find it laughable two people are complaining about RNG in a game where you choose your main characters stats, get to decide your combat order manually, and can pretty much shelf characters you don't like (oh, and one that has dozens of stat-boosting items to boot).

I was thinking the same thing, really. I don't see how the RNG screws you over so much when you directly choose 90% of the things that happen to your main party, including one member's exact stat growths, all of their skills, etc.
I mean, other SMT games can be much worse - see Nocturne and, from what I've heard, Persona, for randomly fucking with your abilities through sheer chance - let alone other RPGs that screw you over with RNG (like the odds of being hit by freeze in Pokemon, for example. >_>)

Okay, I'm keeping in mind that we'll only have one, maybe two Pokemon at the most. I'm thinking the best approach is just to have some suggestions until we find one that we all agree on, though.
With the Heracross, that still has the problem of being killed by a light breeze - 4x weakness to Wind is never fun. I'm thinking that with the status problem mixed in would be its downfall, although either one can be solved through berries - but not both, and that gets rid of the Flame Orb.

Prime example of a painfully powerful Pokemon (alliteration fun!) is Machamp w/No Guard. Give it Dynamicpunch for STAB-ed 150-base-power guaranteed-confusion fun. Throw in Stone Edge for those aerial types, Bulk Up for buffs, some elemental punch (instinct says Thunder, since water types from any RPG seem to be defensive), and then throw on a Muscle Belt for added power to all attacks. Or, if the strength is already good enough, a Lum Berry to ensure it can't be screwed over by status on turn 1. 'Course, if it can't kill in one turn, it loses to status almost instantly, and it's not the fastest thing ever (although giving it EV-training for optimum speed could slightly balance this.)

Wow. That's an awesome idea, but must've been damn annoying at times. XD

I've gone back to Shadow Hearts: Covenant, after a small break thanks to fucking up with the combo system. Turns out I've somehow improved at the Judgement Ring while not playing it, and now I'm getting through without any trouble.
Couldn't help but laugh at how much the game hates Gepetto, though - mostly found it funny because I hate him too. The Party Members tutorial has three teams to begin with:

Joachim, Yuri, Karin, Blanca
Joachim, Karin, Gepetto, Yuri
Joachim

The first thing it does is build a team out of the third set: Joachim, Blanca, Karin, Yuri. Then, it shows how to change party members by taking Gepetto out of Team B and replacing him with Blanca. The game creates three teams for you and none of them have Gepetto. This is pure awesome. <3

Going along similar lines to Fanatic, Amarant? He equips claws, has his Flair skills (which could be seen as magic), and his whole angsty personality seems to stem from Zidane setting him up.

Odd no one cares about the new ICO. And it seems I am the only one who feel the Golden Sun is not going to be as good as it sounds....

New ICO WHAT?

Yeah, I didn't know either. Haven't played SotC, but Ico = AWESME. (Despite being yet another one of those games that I've never got round to finishing. >_>)

Ehh, those were just general ideas with no research past "Hey, what can this learn?". I can understand the reasoning behind the Pikachu, but I'd still say Blastoise can easily be made pretty powerful - optimum EV/nature stats, perhaps? Change the moveset however, but I'm fairly sure that the Wacan Blastoise with added attacks can easily be H/G.
I'll admit, those probably need a lot of work, but I'm fairly sure those can at least reach top-Heavy, if not H/G quite easily. (With stat abuse, naturally.)

Golden Sun DS! Now I really have to play Lost Age.

I need to finish the first one too, but otherwise, this is exactly what I was thinking.
Otherwise, this E3's been painfully disappointing for me. ;(

First thing that comes to mind for me are Pokemon with items/TMs~

Blastoise w/Wacan Berry
 - Rain Dance, Water Pulse, Focus Blast, Ice Beam.
~ Wacan Berry negates the electric weakness, which is pretty common around the DL, and Water Pulse/Ice Beam give chances for status. Focus Blast is powerful, a Special Fighting attack and can lower Sp. Def, and Torrent + Rain Dance + Water Pulse is likely to kill quickly for when it's struggling. Still has terrible Speed and average Sp. Atk, though.

Pikachu w/Light Ball
 - Thunderbolt, Surf, Volt Tackle, Swift
~ Light Ball doubles its Sp. Atk, already making it above-average, and Surf & Thunderbolt are naturally powerful attacks, with Thunderbolt having added paralysis. Swift is for the evade-happy/elemental-immune, and Volt Tackle is the physical-based attack to deal with high MDef. Of course, if it can't OHKO, it's likely to get OHKO-ed itself, with terrible HP & defences.

MAIN TOURNAMENT
Nefertiti (Mana Khemia) vs. The Fate ~ Cluster Amaryllis (Shadow Hearts Covenant) - Easily my favourite two songs left from any division. If either of these champs, I'll be happy~
EXEC_SPHILIA/. (Ar Tonelico 2) vs. Main Theme (Orchestral) (Parasite Eve) - EXEC is... odd. Good for the most part, but distinctly odd. I'm not sure if that goes particularly well for or against it, but I'm leaning against, because at the moment, it's taking me from an otherwise good song and-- EXEC. 3 minutes. WIN. <3
PE Theme is... nice. Can't really say much more for it at this stage. Or 6 minutes later. It had its good moments, but, for the most part, was pretty average. EXEC takes this, but I'm hoping whatever wins here doesn't champ.

FAILURE BRACKET
Honeybee Manor (Final Fantasy VII) vs. Key to my Heart (Tales of Destiny 2) - Yes, it's fail. Bu~ut... outside of bad Engrish and a maybe slightly bad beat, I'm not seeing what's so bad about KtmH today. Honeybee has THAT NOISE, which makes it an automatic fail!winner over a "meh" song in my books.
Bitter Dance (Star Ocean 3) vs. Dragon Slayer (Dragon Slayer) - OH DEAR GOD. I think that's the first time I listened to that one. Either way, Dragon Slayer, outside of the low audio quality, isn't all -that- bad... Bitter Dance is... ugh.

ANIME
Canta Per Me (Noir) vs. Blast My Desire (Initial D Fourth Stage) - I agree with Snow that Blast has its flaws, but for the most part, it's much better than the average song. Canta's good, but just... this isn't close. Not at all.
Destiny ~Taiyou no Hana (Black Jack 21) vs. Salva Nos (Noir) - I... forgot Destiny was playing. I like Salva. That's enough to decide it for me.

That reminds me of the time one of my friends was talking about his time on Xbox Live. One of his friends suddenly stopped playing Call of Duty 3, complaining that it was "such a shit game, total waste of time, no idea why I even fucking played it in the first place". When they asked him what was wrong with it, one of his actual arguments was: "The storyline's too predictable". In a World War game.
I mean, seriously, what did you fucking expect? The Germans to win? >.>
