Sopko: Don't worry. I don't take things personally almost ever lately.

Quote
OK's justification for voting Keeshi as 'same as I did for OK' feels off to me (Keeshi's contribution to the game at the time of OK's vote seems higher than OK's at the time of mine, though that could be subjective), and so does what reads as a warning about being careful with your vote. You call scum hammering outside LYLO before someone is able to make a compelling defense 'convenient'? How?

'cos hasty hammers are *really dumb* and leave a pretty clear paper trail, I'd say. In theory, anyhow. (They certainly give more to work with than a nice, orderly lynch where everyone calmly and rationally agrees.)

<->

Dread Thomas' latest post seems to be 90% cheerleading. Doesn't really say anything to sink my teeth into, it's all 'you did a good job!' or saying something really obvious.

<->

I'm through with voting for Ryogo. ##Unvote: Ryogo. Seems to be playing like a newbie, doesn't seem to be playing in a scummish way. I don't really care to vote for Smodge (nonpresence on this level is grounds of modkill, not lynch) and feel that he's more of a 'safe' choice for people at the moment for timid people to hide behind without being questioned over it.

People who are voting for him, who else would you vote for?

And now... people I'm paying attention to for the time being.

OblivionNight!

+Isn't being weak and voting for Smodge!
+Did seem to rethink his stances!

-Unusually paranoid about mid-to-late votes on votetrains.
-Quickly seemed to retract that and tell us stuff we all already know about LYLO.
-Attitude promotes 'second chances' in general.
-Hyped metagaming.
-Gives ze obvious advice.

##Vote: OblivionNight Most questionable play so far, really. Anyone apart from me and Cor got thoughts on OK?

Also, as it comes to me: is there *really any point* giving newbies direct hints on how to play- or rather, hints on how to not look scummy? They're scumtells, surely it's less likely in general that they'll make 'em if they're town. So yeah. (and people read Ryogo as suggesting no lynch? I saw it more as an observation.)

Excal!

+Voted for Ryogo early, bringing us up to three! That got things started amirite.
-I find his posting to be... unnatural.
-Oh and he voted for Smodge. Meh.

Excal is, to use that wonderful phrase, 'throwing me for a loop'. On the one hand I generally like what he's got to say. On the other hand he's oddly nice to Ryogo despite having a vote on him early on (that vote no longer exists, but still.) He admitted his vote on Ryogo is a 'conversation starter' (I did something similar, and in retrospect don't really feel it's a great thing to do, but eh).

It isn't my intent to question his vote on Ryogo, though- it's.. still more his reaction to others over it for not responding to it. I'm aware this has been covered before. I feel like Excal is walking a fine line between analytical and, how shall we say, 'creative' in his discussion.

It IS early game, however. So we'll see.

Otter!

+Listened to me!
-Isn't posting much else, though.
+It hasn't been very long!
-But he HAS been around dammit. Surely he can do more than needle Ryogo over mentioning No Lynch (which has been a death sentence in previous games. zzz)

(I guess that's mostly a 'post moar' whine.)

Corwin: Screw you. I keep tabs on my friends and we keep roughly the same hours. I don't stay up until 5 in the morning or whatever, and I fill my time with enough stuff and still manage to post relatively frequently (or at least I have, in previous games.) In short, I make an effort. Kindly plz to stop projecting your lack of life onto me.

Otter in particular rambles quite a lot about general mafia theory, and takes up a good deal of time when he does so. Or, at least, he has in prior games. Apologies for being hypocritical. Some is probably necessary. Don't wanna go overboard.

I am also concerned that you don't seem to see what Tom finds strange with Excal to be odd. We could go in this loop forever, but the whole dialogue Excal has pulled on people 'not questioning him for having a suspect vote' seems bizzare when he still has said vote placed. If he'd 'realised he made a mistake', surely he'd remove it. I found the exchange, particularly between him and Shale, to be rather odd.

<->

Smodge needs to post etc etc let's toe the party line here, people!

<->

OK: "We should keep votes so low that scum can't conveniently hammer before person xyz has a chance to defend" just... doesn't work. Such a move isn't subtle and is often damning, especially if scum are really trying to get it done with quickly; I think we'll notice if they try, and ask questions on the morrow! I feel this attitude is more likely to constrict play.

Oh yeah you said something about encouraging metagaming by looking at past play habits. Very scattershot method of finding scum. People change, playstyles change (sometimes deliberate, sometimes not), so on and so forth. Especially doesn't work with people who are used to playing both sides, or even people who overwhelmingly play scum.

Vote for Keeshi for lurking. Meh. No real opinion. Felt he was sorta going down a decent path by bugging Ryogo over claiming (and that confirmed for me that he knows how to play the game, too, as he's written in posts prior to here that he's played mafia before.)

Excal: What's there to say about it? I refuse to get worried over someone being a dreaded three votes in at this stage (and it's very hard to care about the lynch target much right now; literally anyone but me is a fine choice for the moment.) The reason you voted for him was obvious, if weak. It was certainly no flimsier than my own. I am likewise waiting for others to check in and am holding my bets close to my chest for the time being.

I... am not really going to be jumping down peoples throats during early day 1 much, I suspect. That way leads long and stupid arguments of misplaced words, which oh-so-rarely lead to conclusions of any kind.

I was planning to bandwagon someone, anyone from the very start. Ryogo was good enough for me. Two votes on one guy is more likely to create an interesting start than two votes on two guys. Nothing really yet stands out in particular to me as scummy anyhow. Good as anything to leave it on him. The usual 'everyone votes for everyone else' web of argument doesn't usually help much, I like this more.

Officious as usual, Otter. I hope your posts, in general, contain more playing the game and less... talk about playing the game later on. Quite frankly, it's boring to read a lot of the time, so yeah. At least compact it a bit this time 'round.

Begging everyone to not roleplay this game. This isn't Post Restriction Mafia 2.

zzz shale must be scum zzz omgus zzz wait no that's not the way, and besides I'm already voting for Ryogo.

Personally I don't care, like, at all about flavour or who peoples composers are or anything like that. Shale, the mod already confirmed that names don't matter in the opening post.

Also, quickest day 1 bandwagon or what? Not that I particularly care, with it being day 1 and day one being 72 whole hours and all that crap.

Also, EvilTom, I always seem to post ok when I play and I'm in your timezone. Whining about it rarely does anything good for your cause (regardless of which country you're posting from, really.)

It seems that, in general, would-be mods are going to be better off posting interest to GM and leave the number of people to play either relatively low or open to debate. With the number of willing players dwindling by the game, anything greater than 9 people seems difficult to attain.

Cid, I'll play to make up numbers if you want. I really can't remember the setup and if you've added more players it'll likely change anyway.

Besides, there are plenty of people out there who seem to prefer modding to playing, and I wanna play again. >_>

Forum Games / Re: Post Restriction Mafia - Game Thread - Day 1
« on: March 19, 2008, 03:54:19 AM »
Although I can concede the setup was slightly angled towards scum, I don't think it was anything insurmountable, and in any case, town wasn't really doing themselves any favours. I don't think you can attribute town loss to setup imbalance for this one. Had the game been closer it may have been more valid. As far as modkilling townies goes, I said as much in the first post. Perhaps more leniency could've been used, but.. well. Don't break your restrictions! Check every post! Then check it again!

I too was baffled that none of the tounge-twisted townies decided to mention what had happened to them in somewhat more explicit terms; there was no gag order.

Why did it take you three days or some such to throw Cid a bone, guys? And it even took a scum to do it! Yak played way too awesomely. Player of the game award indeed.

Town did, in general, spend too much time looking at restrictions and not enough time looking at what and how much was being said... yeah I think that's obvious. On that note, I make *no apologies whatsoever* for restrictions, difficulty, unfairness, etc. You got what you signed up for! I do apologize to Sopko and anyone else who found their role PM unclear, but not for the intent behind them. The game was intended to be something of a novelty game, so yeah.

Town probably should've had another power, or scum should've been less one. Ah well.

Cid investigated Shale, Andrew, and Excal in that order (and died the same night he checked Excal.)

You are the Polyglot! Sopko!

As a master of many langauges, you feel compelled to share your knowledge with the world. To this end, each day, you must select a langauge to post in. The entire contents of your post must be in that langauge (including quotes from other peoples posts, should you choose to use them).

You ##Vote or ##Unvote as normal, however.

You win with the town. You may find various websites helpful.

Addendum: I didn't include it in the original PM, but Soppy was supposed to pick a new langauge each day. He PM'd me on this... after he picked English for day 1. Sorry! >_<

<->

You are the Demotivator! Otter!

A fundamentally cynical and ironic soul, every word from your lips exists only to dampen the spirits of others. To this end, each and every post you make must contain a demotivational poster from the following website-

http://www.despair.com/viewall.html

-and you have to jump through any and all hoops of image-hosting that may arise. The contents of your post must refer to the image posted and bring it into relevance to the topic under discussion, and you can't use the same image more than once. There are 93 images total, which means you can only make 93 posts all game...

...but you can have ##Vote or ##Unvote by itself at any time without needing an image.

You win with the town.

<->

You are the Poet! VSM!

Your restriction is quite the pain
The limericks will drive you insane
Yet write them you must
Just don't get that fussed
When you get lynched in this game.

You must post entirely in limericks. This website will teach you how to create them.

http://volweb.utk.edu/school/bedford/harrisms/limerick.htm

You have no other restrictions! You can ##Vote and ##Unvote outside of limericks, however.

You win with the town.

<->

You are the Post Critic! Corwin!

You have exceptionally high standards and only posts of the greatest caliber will be tolerated in your game of mafia. All of your posts are to be (most likely scathing) reviews of the posts of others, in which you will brutally deconstuct their poor grammar, their thinly veiled intents, foolish conclusions, unfortunate plotlines, and other such monstrosities. You will allocate to every post you review a score from 1 to 5 stars. If you bring up subject matter of your own, it must always be somehow compared to the post which you are referring to. Reviews must be at least 200 words in length.

You have no other restrictions! You can ##Vote and ##Unvote without needing to write a review. You win with the town.

<->

-You are the Bullet Fanatic. Andrew!

-All of your posts are bullet pointed.

-Your bullet points cannot consist of more than 20 words each.

-You can have up to ten bullets a post.

-You can't post twice in succession.

-Someone else needs to post before your next attempt.

-You can't use commas.

-There is an empty line between each point made.

-Exception: You can ##Vote and ##Unvote freely.

-You win with the town.

<->

You are a Mute man! El Cideon!

You cannot speak at all, but armed with your tape recorder, you can replay the words spoken by others! You must quote the posts made by other people. You must quote entire paragraphs, unedited- you can't crop them or cut corners, or bold certain sections, or reformat them, or anything like that.

You can ##Vote and ##Unvote as often as you like, however, of your own voiltion.

You're also a cop, with guaranteed sanity to boot (although other things may affect your results.) Each night you investigate someone and find out if they are scum or town.

You win with the town.

<->

The Elmer Fudd SirAlex!

You're Elmer Fudd! Whenever you would use the letter 'R', you substitute it with 'W' (that is, you can't use the letter r at all). In your first post for each day, you must declare it to be (Player) Season, and pick out a particular player which you will hunt. All of your posts must contain blatant attacks on that player's arguments in one form or another.

You gain special powers whenever someone states the name of a character from Looney Toons. The name doesn't need to be complete (for instant, 'Bugs' in lieu of 'Bugs Bunny' is fine) but it must be part of their name and the reference must be intentional (so someone saying 'that bugs me' won't do, and nor will 'that wascally wabbit'). You don't count as far as saying this name goes... but other people quoting other posts do, unless they are quoting your post. Repetitions of the same name in the same post are fine.

You can pick one power to use each night, and gradually accumulate them as time goes on.

You win with the town.

0   times: No powers.
10+ times: Roleblocker!
20+ times: Doctor!
40+ times: Vigilante!

<->

You are a Man With Two Heads! EvilTom!

They spend more time talking to each other than to the game. All of your posts comprise of conversations between your heads. Your heads invariably have different opinions which they will argue about, although the difference need not necessarily be over who they think is scummy or not. Nonetheless, it must be there. Each head must state at least a third of your post, and should possess distinct personalities.

You can ##Vote and ##Unvote without discussing anything, if you choose.

You win with the town.

Addendum: The format of the posts could take whatever Dread Thomas liked, as long as it was clear there were two entities, and I felt it was. He wasn't modkilled because as long as each head spoke for *enough* of the post, things would be fine.

<->

You are a True-Blue, Dinki-Di Townie! OK!

Every post you make will explicitly remind people of your towniness, or perhaps your not-scumminess. How could anyone suspect you? It boggles the mind, really it does.

You can ##Vote and ##Unvote without reinforcing your position, however.

You win with the town.

<->

You are Captain Planet! Shale!

You have a strong dedication to protecting the earth, and hope to bring out the same in everyone you meet.Each post you make must contain an message about protecting the environment. The message must be different every time.

You can ##Vote and ##Unvote without spreading the word, however.

You win with the town.

<->

You are the Salesman! Smodge!

Sure, the town is under attack by the mafia, but you've still got a product to sell- The T.G. Puppy, a cute, stuffed dalmation that the girls will adore. People can purchase your product by stating ##Buy: Puppy, and you must try to sell the puppy to the audience in every post you make in a highly enthusiastic fashion.

You can ##Vote and ##Unvote without trying to flog the puppy, but it's really cute! The world needs to have it.

You win with the town.

Addendum: I really don't know where he pulled the third party thing from. I guess I should be more explicit? o-o

<->

You are a Pretty Princess! Excal!

You must be unfailingly polite within your posts, which means you must compliment people when you agree with them ("Your argument unfolds... like the petals of a beautiful flower...") and apologize when you disagree or vote for them ("...and unfortunately, there is no conclusion I can come to. I'm sorry! I... I don't want to think this way!") Your posts must be somewhat saccharine.

You CANNOT ##Vote and ##Unvote without doing one of these things, unlike everyone else, who can vote and unvote freely. You *must* pay compliments or apologize in the same post.

You win with the town.

<->

You're the Tounge-Twister McGoo, LadyDoor! You laugh at all the petty taboos these fools have placed upon themselves. You shall make them suffer! Why? It's what you do.

You have the power within you modulate the way in which a townie is speaking! Each night, you can select one person and twist their tounge, causing their post restriction to mutate for that day. In general, this will usually make it more difficult for them to speak.

You're scum, and have no such restriction yourself, but you'd better fake one. Your scumbuddies are Yakumo and Tonfa, and you win when town is dead! Dead, I say!

Scumchat is in #crazymoonlangauge, password is 'babel'.

Examples of post restrictions are (and these may or may not appear in-game)...

-

You're the Desperate-for-Attention Dramatic Artist, Yakumo! You're as scummy as they come, but you are a tortured soul, and all you truly wish for is approval. You take approval to be...

-If your posts are directly quoted in at least sixteen other posts within one day. This doesn't apply to nested quotes, i.e. someone quoting a post quoting you; the reference must be original.

-If one of your posts is awarded a perfect score by another player other than your scumbuddy (such as a 5-star rating, an A+, 10 out of 10, etc)

If approval is met, you become invigorated, and become a godfather!

You're scum, and have no post restriction, but you better fake one. Your scumbuddies are LadyDoor and Tonfa, and you win when town is dead! Dead, I say! You also pick which of you goes on the kill, which deprives the killer of his powers that night.

Scumchat is in #crazymoonlangauge, password is 'babel'.

<->

You're a rolecop, Tonfa!

You have no post restriction, but you better fake one. Your scumbuddies are LadyDoor and Yakumo, and you win when town is dead. Scumchat is in #crazymoonlangauge, password is 'babel'.

Today was a day fraught with what could only be described as close, analytical, and inspired detective work.

"So, Mr. Cideon has recorded more words from Mrs. Corwin than from others! Clearly, she is, in fact, a murdering scoundrel- ah! No, I didn't mean to put it like that... she's more of a murdering... artist.. perhaps" pronounced Excal, and who could disagree? A task made all the harder by the glare of reflected light from her many, many bangles and pieces of sparkling jewelery...

-This makes sense.

-How can we go wrong?

Helped out by the, in retrospect, far-too willing Tonfa and Lady Door, both of whom were noted for their detachment from reality, they flung the critic down into the well!

"And that's it, folks! Unfortunately, our contestants haven't won any prizes today," pronounces Yakumo, before throwing away his microphone and pulling out a gun. "I'd wish you better luck, but you won't need it where you're going," he adds, smirking, as Tonfa and LadyDoor manhandled Excal and OblivionKnight towards the well.

"Are you serious? You're seriously gonna kill us?! What did WE do to you? What's your MOTIVE, man, for killing innocent townie dudes like us?"

Tonfa blinked. "Oh, eugenics, mostly, but Yakumo really wanted to make a stir. He's a bit of ah... how do you put this..."

"Attention whore?" supplied LadyDoor, helpfully.

"Yeah, that's it! Anyway, I figure that's that. So long!"

"But.. but I can't die! It's not faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaair!" whined Excal, all the way to the bottom of the well.

-Dammit.

Corwin, The Post Critic, Vanilla Townie, was lynched!

Game over, man, game over! Scum (Yakumo, Tonfa, LadyDoor) win! Flawless Victory!

The town nodded as one. After all, EvilTom was a man of considerable stature- he had to be, to support his dual intellects! It did take some effort to get him to go into the well (his heads kept getting stuck.)

"Uh, guys? EvilTom couldn't have done it. His heads would've just argued over whether they'd actually push me or not," complained Timmy, once the deed was done. "He'll keep me fed for the next week or two, though..."

EvilTom, The Man With Two Heads, Vanilla Townie, was lynched!

Upon hearing that, the town decided to abandon this meeting for another day.

Perhaps this was a mistake.

The next day, El Cideon failed to appear at the meeting. A quiet fellow who often went unoticed, some suspected he actually had some kind of condition; a mute, perhaps? Upon reaching his house, however, they found all sorts of recording and surveillance equipment... that had been smashed beyond recognition.

A police badge was lying on his desk, mocking those who came to find it. Naturally, the body was nowhere to be found...

El Cideon, The Mute, Cop, was killed at night!

Smodge's campaign was less than satisfactory to the town, but the puppies *were* rather cute. But then...

Upon discovering that there were to be no refunds, Excal was upset.

Smodge13, aka Salesman, Vanilla Townie, was lynched!

THE NEXT DAY...

"Alright, which of you threw VSM down the well?" snapped Timmy, irritably, once the town had reconvened. "You realise that he took about an hour to die, and wouldn't stop reciting poems until he did? Not that I snapped his neck or anything to make the pain stop, you understand, just.. just... catch that guy!
