General Chat / Re: What Games Are You Playing 2013?
« on: August 07, 2013, 07:23:00 PM »
I'm part of a charity marathon at the moment with a few friends - come join us and spam chat and stuff? :D We're taking donations for Macmillan Cancer Support, and there are prizes to be won and challenges to force us into for donations, so come and join the fun. <3
Tomorrow, specifically, I'll be doing an Ocarina of Time challenge run where I take a drink every time I take damage (meaning I get more drunk and get worse at the game and... vicious and beautiful circle) from about midnight (GMT) to 11:00 Friday, so join for that?
We're streaming over at http://www.twitch.tv/tolarian_tutor if you're interested - viewers, people in chat and especially donations are greatly appreciated. <3

I'm torn between two options at the moment. One is to try and mimic my recent Pokemon VGC team and run a Whimsicott that sets up Tailwind and then attempts to spam Helping Hand if it survives past that. (With Nall so that Tailwind can go up instantly each turn, barring initiative)
The other option is to run Mew instead and go for a slow team of threats, try to tank until F4 and then use Mew w/Trick Room.

I figure the first option is better because double speed is absolutely insane and there are practically no threats in the Dungeon that are both slow enough to abuse TR and durable enough to survive the first round.

If nothing else, Mew has access to Hidden Power and Transform. Depending on how you take HP, it can have a solid choice of elemental damage (as long as multiple elements aren't needed) meaning it can get the Fire damage people are talking about. Failing that, Transform lets it follow along with Ditto's plan, only with a lot more speed because of the Sealstone.

Kneejerking towards Team Malcolm. Open with Rain Dance/Protect (which should get past any Confuse Ray shenanigans), then proceed to blitz with Seaking. Megahorn takes care of all the problem Pokemon that Andy has, and Wailord can support with Waterfall if needed (or blowing up at a suitable moment). The sheer lack of speed on Andy's team is hugely problematic, especially when facing the Swift Swimmers.

Hmm. Can the rain team really manage enough offence to take out Abomasnow and Glaceon before they start causing problems? Seaking/Kingler are the only things that are able to really hurt Abomasnow, and it's going to be switching in and out in order to try and save the Hail for as long as possible (and so that Kingler can't cause trouble later - it's the only threatening physical attacker on the team, so breaking the Sash is /good/). Glaceon takes roughly 80% from the two biggest damage dealers combined, and that gives it enough time (with the Sitrus Berry added in) to take three attacks - that means something is either staying asleep or Glaceon is sticking around. Froslass is still very capable of doing some solid damage - for reference, it currently outspeeds everything except Kingdra in rain, including the double-speed Seaking. A quick calc tells me that it does around 40% to Seaking with Shadow Ball, and everything else except Kingdra has worse Special durabiliity than Seaking.
Not only that, but with 5/6 of my team having Protect (and only 2/6 on Malcolm's), there's a very good chance of getting an essential Protect off at the right time.

Admittedly, it's close either way. Shock and/or horror, Pokemon teams turn into weather wars very quickly. I just think that Abomasnow switching a lot (and ending the rain at inconvenient moments) pushes the match out of Malcolm's reach, especially if he goes for double Dance on T1. If he needs to do that to bring in the rain each time, then that's a lot of free attacks for my team.

Yeah, this goes to Team Laggy. Between Tauros and Porygon-Z, Neph's team just doesn't have enough answers. The only solid threat on Team Neph is Toxicroak, and that just doesn't get time to Bulk Up - Doubles ends up being waaay too fast to allow setup.

Discussion / Re: "Who am I?" Personality Test, mainly visual based
« on: May 19, 2013, 03:47:21 PM »
53% Openness Your high level of openness suggests that you are imaginative, creative, and comfortable with variety and change. But you can also tend towards individualistic behavior and impractical thinking.
14% Conscientiousness You like to act immediately on impulse, which can be both effective and fun. But if taken to the extreme this can produce undesirable long term consequences for yourself and others.
49% Extraversion Your low level of extraversion suggests you are likely to be more reserved than other people, enjoy time alone and value maintaining strong relationships with a few close friends.
57% Agreeableness You value getting along with others, so are considerate, friendly, and willing to compromise your interests for the benefit of the group around you. As a result you tend to be very popular.
74% Neuroticism You are emotionally reactive and prone to react intensely to events with feelings that linger for some time. This can affect your ability to think clearly or cope with change and stress.

OUTLOOK
Realist
Realists like to think they see things the way they really are. But it’s important to remember that everyone sees the world differently. You might tend to keep a level head, and don’t excite easily, but this can leave you susceptible to bouts of gloominess. If you feel yourself moving towards a negative emotional extreme, try looking to other people for fresh perspectives.

CHARACTER
Thoughtful
Thoughtful people have a very giving and sympathetic character and are genuinely interested in and concerned about others. However, they can sometimes lack the persistence to follow through with their good intentions. Luckily, you’re very good at inspiring good feelings and actions in others who can help carry you along too.

SELF CONTROL
Reserved
You may feel a bit conflicted when you’ve been wronged. On the one hand it can affect you deeply to the point of feeling victimized, but on the other you can be scared of saying something about it for fear of upsetting other people. The result is that your anger might be directed inwards, which is very unhealthy. You can’t always be the nice guy.

COMPOSURE
Direct
Direct people can find it hard to resist their urges and impulses. In fact, when they really want something it’s hard for them to keep their desire in check. If you find it all too easy to sacrifice your long-term goals for instant gratification, or wake up with a major headache the next morning, this might be an aspect of your life that would benefit from a bit more concentration.

TASTE
Creator
Your real interests lie in creative activities. You can seem like quite a private person, but you’re equally comfortable pursuing your interests with a group of like-minded people or by yourself. People who share this characteristic like a challenge they can get their teeth into and really focus on without any distractions.

SOCIABILITY
Humble
People with this characteristic tend to be modest and self-effacing – sometimes in the extreme. They enjoy their privacy and their own company, but are also sympathetic to the needs of others. In fact, sometimes they can be too trusting of people, which can lead to them being taken advantage of. If you recognise this trait in yourself, it’s important to have someone you’re sure you can trust looking out for you.

ACTION
Laid back
Laid back people don’t worry too much about big plans and goals. They’re much more likely to keep a fairly clean slate so they’re able to respond to those sudden important jobs that always seem to crop up. You might sometimes lack the motivation to take charge or avoid coming up with new ideas, but you know deep down that putting in the effort will benefit you in the long run.

ATTITUDE
Progressive
People with progressive attitudes tend to have a great deal of faith in human nature and believe in education, co-operation and free thinking as ways to help develop society. They are willing to try new ideas and solutions and take a thoughtful approach to issues like social problems. It sounds like you tend to be seen as the voice of reason in most situations.

PROCESS
Dreamer
Dreamers get very excited by the prospect of new ideas and ways of seeing the world, but they tend to lose their way in theoretical possibilities and flights of fancy. If this sounds like you, you might be seen as a fantastic starter but not so great finisher. But, no one can fault your enthusiasm and ability to thrive in the uncertainty of the new. Force yourself to be a bit more organised and you’ll blow people away.

RESILIENCE
Sensitive
Sensitive people are extremely aware of potential dangers and problems around them – perhaps a little too aware sometimes. In fact, they tend to purposefully imagine worst-case scenarios. If you recognise this trait in yourself, rather than let yourself be overcome by fear use these theoretical situations to stimulate yourself to come up with imaginative solutions.

Realist is fair, character seems accurate enough (I care about others and say meaningful things but am too lazy to follow through, woooo), reserved makes sense. Composure is odd because of the phrasing, but makes sense. Creator is fair, although I express it in weird ways, I think. Sociability is horribly wrong - if anything, I don't trust anyone at all, and I don't particularly enjoy my own company. Laid back is the most accurate thing on this whole test for me. Progressive attitude seems fair, and Dreamer makes sense given the stupid amount of projects I start and never finish. Sensitive on resilience makes a lot of sense, I always expect the worst. ;o
So yeah, test is entirely reasonable, bar one small section. Fun times.

re: counter-stance arguments: The idea that someone should auto-win by being able to stall out a match seems pretty ridiculous to me. If a match won't end because of some kind of move/combination of moves, I tend to pretty much rule out those moves. Depends on circumstances and stuff, but if I could vote on it, I imagine I'd be against Ramsus pretty heavily here.

Also, for argument's sake, Guard Scorpion's stance lasts a set amount of time, so he's incredibly easy to beat - any PC with a wait command can just let the stance end, attack before it's up again, repeat. Helps that it's stupidly slow and is roughly a 2.5HKO to front-row characters.

Kneejerking a Pass for myself. Between Ramza having all the healing in the world, Shadow basically being a giant nuke to the physical attackers on the floor (even if he needs to be healed/revived afterwards) and Elincia dodging forever, the floor kinda collapses. Throw in Tidus being able to Haste up the important parts of the P4 fight to keep it under control (a.k.a. take out Naoto) and Slow the relevant FEers and.. yeah, I don't really see an argument that means I can lose.

Isolde (MK) vs Fou-Lu (BoF4) - Isolde just has all the right tricks for this fight.

Palom (FF4) vs Black Wizard (FF1) - Better at the same thing.
Titania (FEs) vs Blastoise (PKMN) - NEB analysis says it all. Blastoise is too slow. :(

(Would Surf change Blastoise's chances, though? I'm still unsure on whether or not I allow HMs/store-bought TMs... Leaning no to both, though, which is why I'm voting Titania.)

Just echoing what other people have said, Djinn. Worst-case scenario in telling is that they think you're slightly less competent, which is something you can recover by showing them otherwise. Worst-case scenario in not telling is... what Zenny said.

Since I apparently didn't specify with mine, natures are gonna be the first + (or the only valid one where HP is one of them) and the - is going to be whichever attacking stat they don't use.

Is this Lv 50 or 100? (Or something different?)

Assuming Lv 100 for now.
Abomasnow OHKOs Wailord, and they tie for speed. How awkward. Megahorn is roughly 80% damage to Abomasnow, but Weavile can safely Fake Out the Seaking in that case. However, since Wailord/Abomasnow tie for speed, there is a problem here.
 - If Abomasnow outspeeds, then Weavile uses Fake Out on the Seaking and my team has a huge advantage.
 - If Wailord outspeeds, then my team wants to Fake Out the Wailord instead so that it can't blow itself up.
 - If we don't know which will outspeed until the Pokemon move, Seaking has to make an early choice about whether to Protect or not (from the Selfdestruct).
 - - If Seaking Protects, Weavile knows to Fake Out the Wailord. If Seaking doesn't Protect, Weavile now has the question of whether Aboma/Wailord will outspeed and which one to hit with Fake Out.

Since we're assuming Pokemon rules, I'll assume all decisions are made at the start of a round. The most 'fair' decision here (given how coinflippy this is already) seems to be the one that negates the question of speed. That means Abomasnow is losing 314/384 HP (or rain could be set up!) and Wailord is down.

Let's assume rain came in, because that means Kingdra can come in now and wreak havoc. Abomasnow's Grass Knot does 222/302 HP on average to Seaking while Seaking can either do huge damage to Abomasnow or activate Weavile's Sash. Weavile's Ice Shard isn't enough to finish Seaking after Grass Knot, so it's gotta be Protect or Low Kick. Kingdra+Seaking can finish either Abomasnow or Weavile, but that runs the risk of Protect shutting down that turn. (Abomasnow is the more likely target, thanks to Grass Knot, so is more likely to Protect this turn.) Of course, Kingdra can also potentially flinch a target it hits, so spreading the damage is less problematic for them, but that's.. roughly 35-40% chance, I think? Haven't checked that one so not certain. Grass Knot 2HKOs Kingdra, which is almost certainly the biggest threat at this stage.

...Too many coinflips at this point. I'll come back to this later, but general kneejerk is:
 - Abomasnow/Weavile -v- Seaking/Wailord
-> Wailord dies, Kingdra comes in
-> Abomasnow dies, Glaceon comes in
-> Kingdra dies, Kingler comes in (Rain runs out around here)
-> Weavile dies, if rain: Articuno, if not: Mamoswine (Assuming rain)
 -> Seaking dies, Crawdaunt in
-> Kingler asleep, Crawdaunt dies to Sheer Cold.

I think my team takes it by merit of Articuno being an almost-unanswerable threat to the whole of Malcolm's team bar Kingdra, and the team can handle Kingdra and still be in relatively good shape.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the speed of FF9. The options, though, are there, for all that character availability hinders it a little. Freya, Amarant and especially Quina have some really interesting options, and Vivi is, at worst, the same as every other Black Mage in the FF series.
Compare to FF8 which throws you a bunch of GF skills! ...where you're lucky if you ever use more than 1.
Or FFX! Loads of options! But, outside of some ridiculous challenge, none of them will ever be more than time-consuming ways to win.
I guess I rate FF9 combat highly on the grounds that, hey, at least it actually gave some challenging bosses, even if it was only for the first quarter of the game. That's still a quarter of a game more than any other FF.

Game isn't really as bad as advertised. [...] Kinda like FFXII

As for FF9 discussion, I enjoyed reading into stuff a while back and found out that the guy who pretty much designed everything in FF9 made all but one decision - he wanted the combat to be the fastest in the series, and Sakaguchi suggested changing it to the slowest so that people could enjoy their nostalgia trip at a slower pace.
Ito would have given me a remarkable amount of hope for the future of the FF series, if not for the huge role he played in FFXII. :(
(Also the same person responsible for AP, Materia, and Triple Triad, and hell, I've spent the last 9 years playing Triple Triad online.)

Edit: Also, as for comments of FF9 being entirely dull options but some are faster, I think you can cut the 9 from that. I mean, hell, FF8 and FFX are much worse for having a stupid amount of boring options than FF9 is. FF9 gives you less options but at least some of them (read: Quina) are mildly entertaining to play.

Having played a 6xDGM sealed and a 3xDGM draft yesterday, I can say that Maze Sentinel is almost certainly the best of the Maze ___ cards in my opinion. 3/6 is just monstrous to get through, and the flier just doesn't feel as relevant in this set when there are so many people relying on things like Trostani's Summoner to get damage through. Being able to attack with a 3/6 and having a blocker back is way too nice.

Also, I am looking forward to seeing Green here since I absolutely agree on this format being reaaally slow and Green has the only bear that is actually good, imo.

I am sure math rock/post-rock isn't something I normally go for, but this is still just too good.

I personally enjoy the Dungeon because I like Team Battles. I like seeing big parties fighting each other and trying to figure out what strategies would work best.

I personally would be more likely to vote if each floor had fewer fights, though. The resources aspect is important, but I feel like the sheer number of enemy duellers I have to look up every time I try to vote is staggering.

Thematically, I like seeing enemy fights that have some sort of interesting synergy, or big groups from the same series crossing over. I also like the unique mechanics floors like reverse heal and MT/ST since they force looking at teams in a different way.

I find myself less and less concerned with the "Improve over time" aspect of the dungeon. Trying to remember what duelists are like 2/3rds of the way through their game is far more work now that there's such a ridiculous number of games I have to keep track of.

Still a really fun tournament in general, and building a team is always my favorite part. :)

This, so many times over.
