Last of the Meheecans- Domon Kasshu (Mobile Fighter G Gundam), Professor Layton (Eponymous), Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous) and Miriel (Fire Emblem: Awakening) VS Luca Blight (Suikoden II), Lilianne Valendorf (Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy), Bowser (Mario Series), and Athena Cykes (Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies)

If Domon's Gundam is allowed, this match is a cakewalk for the defenders. Bowser's rinky-dink airship fleet won't be much of a match for Domon's super-advanced robotic death machine, and none of the other members of Bowser's team really have anything that can counter it.

Gen 5 actually isn't ranked at this time.  Sorry!

Yes it is.

EDIT:

So even though we voted democratically to rank a game, one person can still overrule that decision by arbitrarily deciding that it doesn't have enough players? Yeah, fuck that. I'm withdrawing my nominations. I want no part of this.

You seem to have Carmen Sandiego the game confused with Carmen Sandiego the character? In-setting, she isn't an educator; she's a thief. She steals stuff. Ridiculous, over-the-top stuff. Their favourite TV characters, all the world's ice cream, etc.

Which would upset the kids, sure, but being upset is not the same as being afraid.

To be sure, if CK hadn't mentioned the bit about "don't actually harm the kids directly" and Chie is seen as willing to act out of character for the sake of winning, she'd have a pretty good argument - kidnap the kids one by one and throw them in the TV, Adachi style, and encourage the rest of the class to tune into the Midnight Channel to watch their friends slowly starve to death while cowering from evil shadow monsters lurking around the corner.  Who will be next?  That seems more terrifying than an out-of-character Carmen doing something similar with a stolen gun.

However, aside from the "Chie acting wildly out of character" bit, this is restricted to less deadly forms of scaring kids, which is definitely for the best.

...except she doesn't actually have to do any of this to win the match. She could just, you know, do the things I mentioned in my previous two posts to easily win the match without harming the children or doing anything out-of-character.

And you know what else? Children are afraid of monsters, and Chie has the ability to summon an actual monster.

It boggles my mind that Chie is losing this match.

Scaring Small Children- Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous) vs Chie Satonaka (Persona 4)
I am baffled by the number of votes that Carmen is getting here. Carmen is primarily an educational figure who teaches geography and history and whatnot. If anything, the kids will be bored by all that learning, and boredom is pretty much the polar opposite of fear. Chie has seen some really freaky stuff in the TV world and encountered plenty of frightening monsters (not to mention chasing down and catching a goddamn serial killer), so I'm sure she can muster a scary story or two that will spook the impressionable younglings.

Atelier Random- Luca Blight (Suikoden II), Domon Kasshu (Mobile Fighter G Gundam), Miriel (Fire Emblem: Awakening) and Professor Layton (Eponymous) vs Genie (Aladdin), Archer (Fate/Stay Night), Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy V), Yuri Lowell (Tales of Vesperia)
Genie is a dynamo for his team here, but Miriel and Layton are dynamos for their team as well. Two dynamos are more than one. Math. Their biggest challenge will probably be keeping Luca on the right track, but I'm sure they can manage.

Tag Teamin- Solid Snake (Metal Gear Series) and Ned Flanders (The Simpsons) vs Lilianne Valendorf (Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy) and Bowser (Mario Series)
Snake might be able to whoop Bowser consistently in Smash Bros., but in a real-world wrestling match, neither Snake nor Flanders will have any way to reliably damage the hulking armored spiky turtle monster who breathes fire and has claws and teeth the size of garden trowels. The only disadvantage I can possibly see for the Lily/Bowser team is Lily getting distracted by stupid sexy Flanders and his skintight spandex (it's like he's wearing nothin' at all). If you want to go the scripted storyline pro wrestling route, I cannot see Flanders being anything other than a jobber or a comedy relief character. Bowser, meanwhile, is the monster heel that they're trying to push for Summerslam, so he needs to demolish a couple hapless jabronis along the way so the fans will view him as a legitimate threat to the world heavyweight championship. (And, uh, Lily is along for the ride, I guess.)

Playing Cupid- Steve Rogers (Marvel Comics) vs Athena Cykes (Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies)
Well, the Ace Attorney wiki says that Athena is an expert at analytical psychology, which sounds like it would really come in handy during this challenge. Captain Amurrika seems a bit out of his element here, and I can't see a compelling reason to believe that he would be good at this.

Team Fortress: Lilianne Valendorf (Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy), Athena Cykes (Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies), Bowser (Mario Series) and Luca Blight (Suikoden II) vs Master Splinter (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Franchise), Soma Cruz (Castlevania Series), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)
Sue is probably going to be the most useful member of her team since turning invisible seems like a valuable ability to have in a capture-the-flag match. Unfortunately, the rest of her team kind of sucks. Wile E. Coyote brings too much potential for unintentionally sabotaging his team and I cannot see Splinter willingly using a gun to shoot other people since he's an honorable martial artist or whatever who will want to stick with melee attacks. Lily's team just seems all-around more competent at this.

The Three-Legged Race: Walter White (Breaking Bad) and Giselle (Enchanted) vs Steve Rogers (Marvel Comics) and Archer (Fate/Stay Night)
Mm-hm.

Fightans: Miriel (Fire Emblem: Awakening) vs The Great Question (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)
Despite never playing Street Fighter before, Miriel is probably smart enough to figure out what the buttons do before Great Question can.

The Stare: Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy V) vs Bender Bending Rodriguez (Futurama)
I don't know the relevance of a staring contest with Fluttershy since I'm not a fan of the pony cartoon, so I'll just say that Bender wins since robots don't have to blink and proceed to not think about this match any further.

Last-minute votes, so no comments/explanations this time.

It's a Trap!: Chie Satonaka (Persona 4) vs Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics)

Double Dash: Solid Snake (Metal Gear Series) and Professor Layton (Eponymous) vs Lenny Curtis (SHadow Hearts Series) and Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3)

Basketball Jam: Domon Kasshu (Mobile Fighter G Gundam) and Genie (Aladdin) vs Umi (Cthulhu Saves the World) and Rikku (Final Fantasy X)

The McFly: Princess Buttercup (The Princess Bride) vs Yuri Lowell (Tales of Vesperia)

Operation Jealousy: Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z: Abridged) and Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly) vs Ned Flanders (The Simpsons) and Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous)

Babysitting: Samus Aran (Metroid Series) vs Genie (Aladdin)
Other M never happened and Samus most definitely is not a hormonal baby-obsessed battered housewife. Genie should have no trouble performing all kinds of magic tricks to keep the little rugrats entertained for a few hours.

The Statue: Ilyana (Fire Emblem Series) vs Umi (Cthulhu Saves the World)
Although Ilyana is mostly known for being hungry all the time, we can't forget that she's also lethargic and sluggish and tired all the time too. Umi, meanwhile, is hyperactive and bubbly and definitely seems more like the type to fidget in situations where she has to stand still and wait. Even if Ilyana is literally starving, I'm sure she can sit still for the 20 seconds it will take for Umi to start spazzing out.

Yo Momma Fight: Visser Three (Animorphs) vs Lilianne Valendorf (Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy)
Visser Three is basically a Saturday morning cartoon show villain, so his insults will probably come across as more corny and campy. I'm sure Lily can pull off a few scathing insults that will net her the victory.

Dwarf Tossing: Yukari Yakumo (Touhou Series) and Zelos Wilder (Tales of Symphonia) vs Yuri Lowell (Tales of Vesperia) and Athena Cykes (Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies)
Yukari's nebulous abilities make it too easy to cheat, so I wouldn't be surprised if her team ends up disqualified for one reason or another. On the other hand, I can see Yuri directing some offhand insulting remark toward Athena that results in an anime-style punch to the sun.

Bullfighting: Mr. Clean (Mascot) vs Miriel (Fire Emblem: Awakening)
Bullfighting is a dirty job. Within seconds, Mr. Clean is covered in dust and bull slobber, causing him to focus more on cleaning up the mess than on actually taming the angry bull that wants to trample him into a fine powder.

Thumb Wrestling: Nostalgia Critic (That Guy with the Glasses) vs Princess Buttercup (The Princess Bride)
He may not be able to thumb-wrestle the most beautiful princess in all the land, but you better believe he can retaliate by making a scathing video about why The Princess Bride sucks after his humiliating defeat.

Kidnap Princess Peach: Squidward (Spongebob Squarepants) vs Domon Kasshu (Mobile Fighter G Gundam)
I think we can all agree that underwater levels are the worst. Now imagine eight fucking worlds of nothing but underwater levels. Even Mario would give up before reaching the halfway point.

Oil Wrestling: Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy V) vs Ronald McDonald (Mascot)
I wouldn't want to square off against Gilgamesh in any kind of wrestling. Those extra arms are going to tie Ronald up into a big greasy pretzel.

Euchre: Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender) and Judge Doom (Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) vs Archer (Fate/Stay Night) and Ned Flanders (The Simpsons)
Yeah, sure, I'll go along with the "Zuko and Doom won't get along" line of thinking.

Achieve Enlightenment: Alexei Stukov (StarCraft Series) vs Steve Rogers (Marvel Comics)
He's probably closer to enlightenment anyway.

Iron Chef: Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs Orin (DC Comics)
Aquaman won't know what to do with the secret ingredient and all his dishes end up being seafood dishes with some beef thrown in. Delita's dishes aren't fantastic, but they make better use of the secret ingredient.

In the Name of the Moon...: Soma Cruz (Castlevania Series) vs King Radical (The Adventures of Dr. McNinja)
Spoiler alert for those of you who aren't up-to-date with your Dr. McNinja lore: King Radical is Chuck Goodrich from the future, so he does have something to transform from. Soma, being a pretty-boy anime bishie type, seems like he'd have the edge at first glance, but his transformation sequence will seem bland and by-the-numbers compared to the totally awesome and radical transformation sequence that K-Rad is gonna bust out. Will Soma's transformation have flamethrowers, dune buggies, luchador masks, mohawks made out of fire, and grizzly bears with gatling guns for arms? No? Didn't think so.

Bad Enough Dude: John Watson (Sherlock Holmes Series) and Bonta-kun (Full Metal Panic?! Fumoffu) vs Solid Snake (Metal Gear Series) and Master Splinter (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Franchise)
Rescuing the president? All in a day's work for Snake.

Just so there's no confusion, I nominated the Old Spice Guy played by Terry Crews, not the other guy.

Life-Size Jenga: Joker (DC Comics) vs Bowser (Mario Series)
I doubt Joker has enough of an incentive to actually do this for long. As Snowfire pointed out, he'd be more inclined to destroy the block tower than build it up. Bowser, meanwhile, has constructed his fair share of needlessly elaborate castles and towers over the years, so building a rickety Jenga tower should be right up his alley.

The SSE: Old Spice Man (Commercials), Xena (Eponymous), Lenny Curtis (Shadow Hearts Series), Professor Layton (Eponymous)
Layton aces the exam, Old Spice Guy yells and flexes at his bubble sheet to make all the correct answers appear (although he misses a few), Lenny does decently and barely passes, and Xena bombs it with a remarkable score of 16%.

Professor Layton (A+) > Old Spice Guy (A-) > Lenny (C) > Xena (F)

One-Liner Fight: Empyrea (Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King) vs The Great Question (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)
Great Question knows how to spout one-liners. They aren't good one-liners, but they're one-liners nonetheless. Can you picture noble, kind-hearted Empyrea trying to go out of her way to insult someone? I can't.

The Punching Bag: Ash Williams (Evil Dead Series) vs Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z: Abridged)
As tough as Ash is, he's no DBZ character. Hitting Vegeta with planks of wood? You might as well be asking him to stand there and endure a mosquito biting him.

Cosplay Contest: Chie Satonaka (Persona 4) vs Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones) vs Bender Bending Rodriguez (Futurama)
Chie dresses up as Mako from Kill La Kill, Tyrion dresses up as Bombur from The Hobbit, and Bender dresses up as Ed209 from Robocop. All three costumes are impressive, but while Chie's and Bender's costumes were instantly recognizable, some of the judges thought that Tyrion was dressed as Gimli and deducted points for his lack of attention to detail.

First Place: Chie
Runner Up: Bender
OUT: Tyrion

eBay Bid Sniping: Walter White (Breaking Bad) vs Chrom (Fire Emblem: Awakening) vs Felix the Cat (Eponymous)
Walter probably has the edge simply because he's likely done this before. Chrom would eventually question why he needs to buy a gaudy leopard-print pimp hat that badly and lose interest while Felix's computer would gain sentience and try to eat him or something right at the crucial deadline.

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3)
Austin may be a published author, but if you've seen his movies, you pretty much already know what his books are going to be like. Considering her unique abilities, Maya is probably a better writer overall. Plus, we can't forget that these two are working within a six-month deadline, and Maya probably seems more likely to actually finish her book within this time frame without getting distracted.

Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X)
Strong Bad does indeed have pyromaniac tendencies, but he's outgunned here. His trusty BMW lighter is no match for Rikku's magic or alchemy, both of which are capable of causing large-scale destruction. At least he'll get an entertaining SBEmail out of the whole ordeal.

The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)
Robots are cool, but if the kids are misbehaving, they can also be scary enough to put the little moppets in line. Sue can...turn invisible, I guess, which doesn't really help her with this task. And being a mother doesn't necessarily mean that she'll be good at wrangling an entire elementary school class.

Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II)
Wile E. Coyote and Luca bring too much potential for failure, methinks. I can't see the other team being anything more than decent, but that's probably enough to outshine the competition.

Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous)
Slime can just, like, stretch its entire body over the plate of hot dogs in a matter of seconds. That counts as eating, right?

* BioShock 2 (XBox 360)
* Batman: Arkham Asylum (XBox 360)
* Witchblade: The Complete Series on DVD
* The X-Men Trilogy on DVD
* X-Men Origins: Wolverine on DVD
* A new laptop cooler
* A 12-month calendar of dragons
* A miniature Dirt Devil vacuum
* A miniature food processor
* A super tacky coffee mug shaped like Yoda
* A set of 6 cool-looking shot glasses
* Assorted practical gifts (air fresheners, soap, lint rollers, shower curtain, etc.)
* Assorted candies and snacks
* Some savings bonds from my grandmother

Sooooooo...as you may or may not know, my cousin and I have an ongoing tradition where we try to make each others' gifts as absurdly difficult to open as possible. Over the years, we've incorporated barbed wire, Plexiglas, plastic wrap, fabric bags sewn shut, spray foam insulation, fishing wire, sand paper, and a slew of other dastardly obstacles. Well, last year my lame and uncool cousin decided that he was going to be lame and uncool and not carry on the tradition. He said that he just doesn't have the motivation or the time to do it anymore, and he's fresh out of ideas anyway. I managed to convince him to do it for one more year (this year) since we started the tradition in 2003 and I wanted to see it last for an even 10 years. He agreed, and the 2013 gift wars were scheduled to be our last battle.

He got me BioShock 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum. He placed each game in their own large Tupperware container, sealed them shut with rubber cement, placed them in a big plastic five-gallon bucket, filled the bucket up with spray foam insulation, sealed the lid on the bucket with rubber cement, and wrapped the bucket with an entire roll of Cellophane.

I kept things a little more simple. I got him a set of 12 Final Fantasy IV bead sprites (Cecil, Kain, Rydia, Rosa, Edge, Yang, Tellah, Cid, FuSoYa, Edward, Palom, and Porom) and wrapped them individually in regular wrapping paper...and then I hid 11 of them throughout my parents' backyard. (My mother grows a lot of plants, so the backyard is a great place for a scavenger hunt.) I gave him the first bead sprite (Cecil) and a flashlight, said "Good luck," and sent him on his merry way so he could look for them in the darkness.

It was a close race, but I managed to unwrap both of his gifts in the time it took him to find 10 of the 11 hidden bead sprites. (He missed the one on top of the shed. Tee-hee.) Even though his method of booby-trapping my gift was more creative, I got to my gifts first, so that means I won! I'm sad that our decade-long tradition is over, but it was fun while it lasted.
