Bandana vs Baseball Cap - Bashing is not the path to beating Ness, let alone Ness with backup.
12
My PS4 died so I traded in a bunch of my old games and got a PS5 for free. Well not actually free it cost me my soul since I hate getting rid of old games. But hey, faster load times so I can now die even more in Elden Ring.

Metaphor Re Fantasia: It's Persona. If you like Persona, you will like this. I'm in the end arc now. So far I'd say it's better than P5 but not as good as 3 and 4. The job system is fun until you realize it's not as freeform as it appears because the later jobs require you to have spent time in other random jobs that you had no way of knowing beforehand.

Baldur's Gate 3: Not too far into this. I started out trying to roleplay as kind of a Lawful Evil fighter. The game wasn't too crazy for this despite giving you options to be an asshole. Except Lae'zel. She loved my tough guy act and came to have sex with me very quickly. She tried to be the power top but I rolled to intimidate her and got a nat 20 with an 18 needed. Probably the only time anyone's ever shut her up.
Then I restarted as a half orc wizard that only casts Magic Missile because it is the coolest spell. The game forces you to memorize other spells but at least you can use all your spell slots to upcast Magic Missile. This run is going smoother because the game likes it when you are a nice guy.

Chef Hat vs Bandana- Serge should OHKO Quina before they move and that puts a real damper on anything else the Chefs could do.
Chef Hat vs Baseball Cap- Ness equips for sleep blocking and proceeds to hand them the entire asses on a platter.  Junpei is helping.
Chef Hat vs Sombrero Orcha isn't quite one-rounded by the weakness-boosted Hydropump plus Ricardo's move, but he can only heal once.  Meanwhile it would take two rounds of concentrated attacks to take out Quina, so three with the heal.  What's Quina got with three turns?  Wellllll... if you spot them an insomniac, and I suppose I do, that.  Thanks Shadow Hearts for being the only RPG with good status blockers but no sleep status!  Put everyone else to sleep and slowly 1v1 Ludicolo to death (basically white wind to outpace Hydropump's damage until those run out of PP), after which Ricardo... he could maybe beat Quina solo but not with them having added damage from an ally.

Bandana vs Baseball Cap- Locke and Serge can't tag team Ness to kill him before his first turn, meaning that Serge's actual weaknesses as a fighter (like the fact he gives up his entire second turn to go ham on someone) actually matter.  Ness' move here is probably to drop a Flash Omega, which almost certainly takes Serge out of the fight entirely and lands sometehing on Locke that lets Junpei win a one on one.
Bandana vs Sombrero- Hey, Ricardo has an ally to buff!  Unfortunately Ludicolo is damn near only grass type in the entire franchise to not get a sleep or paralysis move, so Serge OHKOs them after they get off one Hydropump and that's that.

Baseball Cap vs Sombrero- Pokemon having no status blockers whatsoever, meaning Flash Omega does grisly nastiness no matter the RNG, inclines me to stop the analysis there because Ricardo sure ain't soloing Ness.

We've got 4 two character teams duking it out for your entertainment.  As there are just 4 teams in contention, going to go with a pools format and complete everything in a single session.  All teams will fight each other with the winner determined by which pair has the greatest success.

The 4 teams:

Team Chef Hat: Quina (FF9) and Orcha (CC)
Team Bandana: Locke (FF6) and Serge (CC)
Team Baseball Cap: Jumpei (P3) and Ness (EB)
Team Sombrero: Ricardo (SH3) and Ludicolo (Pkmn)

Astro Bot Went and cleared the maingame.  I'll just have to say that overall, amazing platformer and an unironic love letter to all of Sony's gaming history.  It's 4:45 AM so I'll not go into detail here but...yeah.

I'll say, pity this didn't come out *before* the instant Sony started showing its ass.  And, you know, all the Concord shenanigans.

Other people can post here too, really, it's fine.

Fire Emblem Fates - Beat Mr. Fuga's Wild Ride. Still on Lunatic. Still a wonderfully-designed game mode. It's not that much harder than Hard but the little changes do add up a lot.

Ace Attorney Investigations - In honour of the second game being localized for the Switch, I played this for the first time in a decade. It's been a while since I've really felt a compelling urge to replay an Ace Attorney game and in some ways I feel like I've fallen out of love with the series but then I ended up enjoying this a lot anyway! Honestly I was kinda pleasantly surprised. This is still one of my favourite AA games, case 1/2/4 are all solid then case 5 is real good, simultaneously a good mystery to unravel and one of the funniest cases in the series. Edgeworth best protagonist.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night - Replaying this as well (third Normal Miriam playthrough because I'm too rusty to try Hard, fifth playthrough overall), just got the ability to turn into a laser beam.

Tournaments / Re: Spooky hat season: a themed team tourney - nominations
« Last post by DragonKnight Zero on November 11, 2024, 03:21:00 AM »
So out of the valid noms, they make 3 teams of 3 (hair ribbon, bandana, fedora), 3 teams of 2 (chef cap, baseball cap, sombrero) and a scattering of singles.  I can run something with this though ideally, there would be teams of 3 or 4.  EDIT: Updated team count status, I missed a third member.

So I'm gonna make the call to extend the deadline for another 48 hours or until we get up to 4 teams of 3 whichever comes first.  Then it's showtime.

Alear & Marth (FE Engage) vs. Emelious (Grandia 3)
While I'm not totally down for unevadable hype here and Alear is probably fast enough not to get doubled (if you see that as true they instantly lose), this does seem like an uphill fight in general.
Alear & Marth vs. Rudo (Brigandine LoR)
Alear would like to open with the Rapier out to dissuade Clean Military Rule, but with Rudo's high defense it's not clear it really does any significant damage even if he gets in 6 pokes before Lodestar Rushing.  So yeah, Alear has to suck it up and use a Silver Sword the Wille Glanz and then very slightly loses the coinflip.
Alear & Marth vs. Lenneth (Valkyrie Profile 1)
Alear in their element here.
Alear & Marth vs. Sir Leopold (Dragon Quest VIII)
Interp split on if Cold Breath is ITE or not, yeah.
I will say that as a tiebreak, Alear can sometimes win this even if it is seen as ITE.  If Alear dodges the first Intimidating Scream, then they take 57% HP loss from Cold Breath, but will gain ~20% of their HP back from Divine Speed's healing in round 2.  That means that the next Cold Breath will ram Alear into Unyielding territory and Alear will get a big burst of health.
Of course, Leo can sometimes win even if Cold Breath is out by just sucking it up and going for Desperate Attack OHKO attempts, since he does have the HP to survive for at least 2 attempts into the counters, maybe even 3.

Alear & Marth vs. Celes (Final Fantasy 6)
ITE vs. super, super evade in Vanish.  Eh, Celes has other ways to win even if Vanish hype is ignored.  (But given that the Vallites in Fates don't seem to have any bonus to evasion, it seems being hard to see is considered overrated by FE!)
Alear & Marth vs. Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy 5)
Going against the crowd here.  Gilgy's HP is guesstimated as "slightly below PCHP" so if Alear opens with a Rapier, Rapier poke + Lodestar Rush should probably be fatal.  That gives 4 Time Slip attempts, but 0.87^4 = 57% chance of Alear dodging all of them unless you let Gilgy double here and double with Time Slip.
Alear & Marth vs. Neclord (Suikodens)
Yeah, just in Alear's element.  Will take a bit but Alear's healing should get through.  Nec2's ID is the best option I guess but not inclined to hype that as turn 1 - might ram into evasion anyway.
Alear & Marth vs. Wakka (Final Fantasy X)
Wakka vs. the allegedly evasive.

Alear & Marth vs. Hugo (Suikoden 3)
If FE magic evasion works against WoS, Alear wins, otherwise they lose.
Alear & Marth vs. Ephraim (Fire Emblem 8)
Fun fight, but agree that Rapier hitting weakness here while also making Alear insanely dodgy is probably too much.
Alear & Marth vs. Chie (Persona 4)
Chie's raw HP isn't that great and she reduces it by doing her stuff.  She probably loses even if you let her have her auto-revive as she just can't connect with damage anyway.
Alear & Marth vs. Alain (Unicorn Overlord)
See Ephraim, Rapier hits weakness and - oh wait Alain is THAT tanky?  And can avoid counters?  Uh oh.

-

Oracle (Bravely Default II) vs. Emelious (Grandia 3)
Oracle vs. Rudo (Brigandine LoR)
I'll buy it.
Oracle vs. Lenneth (Valkyrie Profile 1)
Per Elf's comment.
Oracle vs. Sir Leopold (Dragon Quest VIII)
BD characters vs. tanky bosses is often an uphill battle since their damage-per-round is half most cast's in the long term.

Oracle vs. Celes (Final Fantasy 6)
Even if Oracle lands Elemental Impairment, the duration means that they're gonna have to land it again, even if they stocked up 3 BP.
Oracle vs. Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy 5)
Oracle vs. Neclord (Suikodens)
Yeah Neclord is kinda good vs. Fire/Ice/Lightning.  S1 form is probably preferred here which would be really tanky for a BD character to handle even ignoring that.
Oracle vs. Wakka (Final Fantasy X)
Drain hype?  I'm down.

Oracle vs. Hugo (Suikoden 3)
Actually not so sure here.  Hugo is only barely, barely below average HP and has average MDef.  Oracle will barely kill with 9x Triple hits on 4 Triple actions, but rolling low means Oracle will sit there at -3BP and die horribly, and feels a little all-iny a la gambling everything on fatal status.  If I wasn't lazy, I'd math out the odds...  maybe later, but I dunno if I approve of damage blitzes that aren't at least say 60% reliable.
Oracle vs. Ephraim (Fire Emblem 8)
Oracle vs. Chie (Persona 4)
Chie can theoretically slot in backup damage... except it's also Ice.  RIP.
Oracle vs. Alain (Unicorn Overlord)
I'll buy an MP-drain strat.
