Suikoden 5 (R to Z):
Rahal: 6/10 Forced from what I remember, somewhat fun to use.
Raven: 10/10 Raven Rune equals fast tank from hell!
Richard: 10/10 Just overall good.
Roog: 3/10 Forced and not fun to use. Rahal is also just better at everything.
Roy: 6/10 A clone of the prince without the plot ruin. Could be good or bad depending how you look at it.
Sagiri: 10/10 Can't remember her exactly but I remember her being the best at what she did.
Sharmista: 7/10 Very late.
Shigure: 9/10 amazing when you can first get him.
Shoon: 6/10 Late and screw the game. They give him to you at the start then you have to wait till the end to use him again.
Sialeeds: 5/10 -2 for spoilers. Wastes Xp and money.
Sorensen: 1/10 crappy and oh god the voice is bad.
Subala: 5/10 What was Subala a boy or girl? I guess I'll go with Girl who looks like boy. Variation of the rafafleet family.
Urda: 3/10 Crappy elf with a bow.
Viki: 8/10 Above average and one of the better mages.
Wabon: 2/10 Wabon is the blacksmith master guy right? But hell t doesn't matter all the dwarves suck.
Yahr: 6/10 Don't remember much but I can't remember him being that good or bad so a 6 is good.
Zegai: 5/10 Kinda crappy. Rune is kind of bad due to how game is. If the game had good enemies then yeah he'd be like an 8.
Zerase: 10/10 Breaks game.
Zweig: 6/10 forced and pretty average.

Blah, shame I just noticed the S5 stuff now.

Rahal: 1/10. Totally worthless. He gets the obligatory one point for not being Jogurt. That's it. (In fairness, the dragon riders were awesome in war sequences, but I'm not really factoring that in).
Raven: 1/10, just for being such a bitch to recruit.
Richard: 8/10. Pretty much guaranteed to kill whatever he hits.
Roog: 1/10. See Rahal.
Roy: 3/10. S5 had a ton of physical fighters and not enough to differentiate one from the other, so most are gonna get this rating by default.
Sagiri: 4/10. Was she the one with the shrike rune this time around? That's worth something. Also, she's not in the stat-topic for some reason.
Sharmista: 6/10. Earthquake is nice. She doesn't stand out all that much in a game with as many high-powered mages as S5 has, but coming with a second-level rune is badass.
Shigure: 3/10. Generic physical fighter.
Shoon: 4/10. Good on paper, though I barely used him. Only permajoins near the end of the game, too.
Sialeeds: 4/10. Meh, S5 wind rune is pretty unspectacular. Plus, she's a temp. Still better than being Another Physical Slugger, though.
Sorensen: 2/10. Craptastic.
Subala: 3/10. Generic physical fighter.
Urda: 3/10. Ditto.
Viki: 6/10. Decent magic stats. That puts her above so many people here.
Wabon: 2/10. What. Was this one of the dwarves? They kind of sucked.
Yahr: 1/10. Huge dude with the trident, right? He can fuck off and die just for his recruitment window.
Zegai: 5/10. He's usable for when he's forced in the party. Guess I can't ask for more.
Zerase: 9/10. Almost never left my party. Awesome for crowd-control and ST damage, functionally magic-immune.
Zweig: 3/10. Uh, I guess he was a salvageable mage if you threw a rune at him. Always resented having him forced into the party, frankly.

Rahal: 3.5. Magic stat saves him a bit. Needs a Gale Rune though.
Raven: 3.5. RAVEN RUNE!... doesn't work in the only hard dungeon in the game. And honestly there are better tanks anyway, the good stuff is ITE.
Richard: 7.5? Sure. Really good at first, gets pretty bad as time goes on.
Roog: 1. Awful.
Roy: 3. Thoroughly mediocre.
Sagiri: 4. Ew one rune slot.
Sharmista: 5.5. Serviceable filler.
Shigure: 7. Solid overall.
Shoon: 2. Ick.
Sialeeds: 3. Unite saves her a little, but NO FREE RUNE SLOTS DEAR GOD.
Sorensen: 2. Bad.
Subala: 5. Think she was some shade of not-total-fail.
Urda: 7. What the hell, people? Great speed/magic/attack/rune freedom.
Viki: 4. No Magic Absorb below average speed mage. Whatever.
Wabon: 4. I think?
Yahr: 5.5. Decent.
Zegai: 4. Needs a Gale Rune.
Zerase: 9. I guess MT physicals are enough of a weakness to keep her from 9.5? Eh. Rules, anyway.
Zweig: 5. Like you know, whatever.

Rahal: 2/10. Uh…I’ll take him over the Dragon Horses and Roog. He’s pretty damn bad though
Raven: 3/10. I..am not seeing the hype really. Yeah, Raven rune. But most of the time, you can get by without needing him as bait. And there are better attackers who can also tank. Also? Retarded join requirements.
Richard: 7/10. Really good when he starts. Gradually gets worse, but still serviceable towards the end.
Roog: 1.5/10. Not a dragon horse.
Roy: 3/10. He had some niche uses but for the most part? He’s mediocre.
Sagiri: 4/10. Long range weapon that can strike more than once. That’s around it. Also still no match for Cathari.
Sharmista: 6/10. She was decent IIRC
Shigure: 6/10. A Richard variant. He’s awesome if you get him at the earliest. But he gets worse much faster. Still pulls his weight though
Shoon: 2/10. Ugh. Fine on paper; horribly impractical
Sialeeds: 3/10 LOCKED WIND RUNE WITH NO EXTRA SLOTS. Yeah. She’s decent early, but towards mid game, I cringed when I had to add her.
Sorensen: 1.5/10. He on the other hand was just bad from start to finish
Subala: Abstain. Did not use.
Urda: 6/10. She was a Isato variant IIRC. And Isato’s pretty solid.
Viki: 7/10. That magic score + Chain magic beats quite a few people here.
Wabon: 3/10. Uh…He had HP!
Yahr: 5/10. He was serviceable. Feels average.
Zegai: 4/10. He’s fine when he first joins. He never really keeps up towards the end and is just a touch below the average mark.
Zerase: 10/10. Yeah, physicals exist. But I found most fights ended before they became significant. Zerase just smashes the game into pieces.
Zweig: 5.5/10. He’s..workable. Not WHOAMG, but certainly can pull a half and half decently. He’s outclassed in both departments though.

Rahal: 4/10 Not Kyle
Raven: 4/10 What Elfboy said basically. Also you don't need tanks/evade whores when Miakis, Norma and other boost/double edge/power users are taking out bosses and randoms in one turn. Guess Thief is somewhat useful if you are trying to utilise ways to make money but eh.
Richard: 7.0 Starts off strong, like about ten levels above Prince. Needs weapon upgrading asap though since I found his attacks were piddly compared to my already twinked characters >.> Anyway rating is just based on what I've seen though I must admit I haven't used him that much. Opinion might chance once I have.
Roog: 2/10 Meh =-(
Roy: 4.5/10 Can equip Royal Paradise!?
Sagiri: 5.5/10  Need to use more! Good stuff with Shigure rune twinkage and Case Closed though.
Sharmista: Abstain. Need to use more!
Shigure: 7.5/10 Absolutely brutal to start off with but surpassed by Miakis later on.
Shoon: Abstain!
Sialeeds: 5/10 Wind Rune <3 Nice equip options with new game+
Sorensen: 1/10 No
Subala: No
Urda: Abstain. Need to use her extensively before rating. Seems good from what I've heard and I don't want to nerf her score just because I dislike her character >.>
Viki: 8.5/10 Circle formation + Chain Magic
Wabon: No
Yahr: Abstain! Heard Angry Dragon is brutal when set up right.
Zegai:6/10 Starts off strong
Zerase: 9.5/10 Nobody's perfect >.>
Zweig: 6/10 Three rune slots? Treasure Hunter was useful for help with Boost Piece farming and other things.

Suikoden 5 (R to Z):
Rahal: 4 - Not quite average. Why did these guys have to suck so much?
Raven: 7 - Pretty awesome, but not seeing the 10/10 hype.
Richard: 10 - Richard, on the other hand, was a godsend who had a lot of uses, even endgame.
Roog: 3 - No.
Roy: 6 - His Unite gives him a point above average.
Sagiri: 7 - Awesome, gets you through the part of the game that could almost be considered hard.
Sharmista: 5 - Solid back-row, decent magic. Nothing stands out. Nice Unites. Better than Sialeeds. Joins WAY late.
Shigure: 6 - Just a bit better than average, Unite with Sagiri is cool.
Shoon: 3 - Gah, endgame.
Sialeeds: 3 - Gah, fixed Wind Rune.
Sorensen: 1 - Gah, almost worse than Dragon Horses.
Subala: 4 - Solid enough, but doesn't stand out.
Urda: 4 - Solid enough, but should stand out more.
Viki: 9 - Chain Magic.
Wabon: 2 - Barely exists.
Yahr: 3 - Gah, durability/speed issues.
Zegai: 5 - Good when you get him, tapers out too quickly, but low amount of options at the time lets him get average.
Zerase: 10 - Gamebreakingly good.
Zweig: 7 - Eh, pretty good at everything. Unite with Killey/Lorelei is pretty nice. Not bad for a late mid-game team.

Miakis is more useful than Orlandu? Either Miakis gets a Soul Eater in a side quest I never did, or these results are fundamentally fucked up because holy god there is no way she beats the game for you.

Of course she beats the game, it's already easy enough without taking her rune combos into account.

And she gets access to those much earlier than most of the other characters.

Rob: Well, one reason is Miakis didn't have someone give her a 2/10. (Thanks, ID!) Another is that S5 (and more recent games in general) seem to be attracting higher rankings - Miakis is always around what I consider a 9, but it used to be that others would drag 'em down some (see Tir). That said I think you're overrating Orlandu anyway (I don't even find him the best PC in FFT), but they're pretty hard to compare.

This is all very subjective, is the thing. A lot of people are going to cast rankings based on how they feel kneejerk rather than extensive analysis of every other PC. Some people didn't get much use out of Orlandu because they already had twinked PCs? A triple-decker combo with Miakis is pretty much right out of the gate and leaves a lasting impression.

But its not like these things are perfect.

I would contend that they are not. Miakis can't solo the last boss. Orlandu can and does. It takes him all of three turns? Miakis you can twink out, Orlandu makes it so you don't even have to.

Orlandu need something like eight hits to kill the last boss (not counting the first form), and that's without using the draining attack, which is weaker. He's in serious danger of being killed by Grand Cross. A generic with MP Switch/Move MP Up and a Ribbon is a safer choice. You can still do it, but it takes some luck and Altima sucks in non-challenge games, so I'm not sure why you see this is as such an accomplishment.

I'm pretty sure Miakis set up with Sun equips and Eyeball Rings could solo the last boss too, anyway.

Not to mention I don't view "ability to solo" as the single mark of a great character in what is a team game. Reyson can't solo anything but he still rules. In Orlandu's case, taking him outside the solo situation makes him somewhat weaker because Night Sword's value plummets drastically, and because now there are other PCs he has to fight over for Excalibur.

Miakis feels like 9/10 because not only is she the best at what she does (overwhelming physical assault off good speed), she can do almost anything ELSE extremely well, too. I can't think of many parties/setups without her that I don't feel would be improved by adding her. She doesn't have the raw domination needed for a 10, but few do.

As I said, though, they're very hard to compare. You're obviously entitled to your own opinion.

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.
Maybe.
