FF5 Backstab% - TIDE VS RICHARD
« on: June 20, 2014, 05:13:43 AM »
So some of you may remember this topic from 2012: http://www.rpgdl.com/forums/index.php?topic=6032.0

I spoke to RICHARD about doing some netplay, so this eventually happened. This is the written chronicle version for those of you who don't have the bandwidth. A refresher of the rules

RULES OF THIS CHALLENGE:
- Each person gets 2 PC and forms a team. I get Bartz/Lenna, RICHARD has Galuf/Faris.
- On any boss fight (defined as fights where all 4 PCs are present and the boss theme plays), if the PCs on one team are still alive but the other team isn't, the surviving team gets a point.
- On the other hand, if everyone wipes, then the person who conducted the first offensive action against the other team will lose 0.5 points
- NEW RULE: If both players have at least one PC still standing, then FFV gets a point. The implication being that both players had to cooperate in order to win.
- NEW RULE: Because these are not done with 4JF jobs, our jobs are Hatbotted after every boss fight. Needless to say, there is a very high potential for trainwrecking and unbalanced teams. As you will see...

Also, these have been streamed on Twitch. Capturing only the boss fights obviously. No one wants to see grinding and stuff. Summary to follow each video:

Wingraptor:
http://www.twitch.tv/tideruglia/c/4498308 - RICHARD starts us off by showing his traitorous ways. Then gets us killed by Breath Wing.
http://www.twitch.tv/tideruglia/c/4498337 - <RICHARD> Okay, after this, no more Wait abuse.

TIDE: 0, RICHARD: 0.5

Karl Boss:
JOBS ROLLED -
Bartz - Knight
Lenna - White Mage
Galuf - Knight
Faris - Blue Mage

http://www.twitch.tv/tideruglia/c/4498353 - A fatal miscalculation on my part gets me a -0.5 :(
http://www.twitch.tv/tideruglia/c/4498381 - Karl Boss drops two Tailscrews at the worst time possible preventing me from staying alive. RICHARD ends up wiping despite his big advantage.
http://www.twitch.tv/tideruglia/c/4498403 - Getting Blue Magic for RICHARD was a big mistake. Rekt by Goblin PAUNCH

TIDE: -0.5, RICHARD: 1

Guys this is still the best thing ever. It is too bad more RPGs don't have this multiplayer mechanic. A series of these would be great.

What Zenny said. This is hilarious.

Karlabos must be so confused at what is going on.

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.
Maybe.

YES
Finishing it this time would be great
Also spoiler tags everywhere, we don't want to know in advance whether you win and who wins

To that end, perhaps put all the fights in one video so we don't know if this round is a wipe or not.

Zenny/Fenrir: Noted. I will try cutting up the video so that it involves mostly the bosses. I do want to do a written version, guess I can spoiler box it though since I know some of you don't have the bandwidth or video equipment to actually watch it. Also, any other feedback is appreciated!

This is pretty exciting! I wonder if the same thing can be done in FF6?

I was thinking the same thing, but maybe it would be less interesting without the class randomization, and the way FF6 is set up character randomization would probably be too huge of a pain in the ass, unless they did, say, a no Esper run...

Also, to add on to my last thought, maybe to help avoid spoiling when you wipe, you should add on a bit of time where nothing's going on after the boss fights. Keeps the suspense up, at least, though it may make it harder on people with bandwith issues.

I think what makes it compelling is that it is more like competitive battling like Pokemon, only with JRPG classes/characters and an extra stage hazard called FF5 bosses (who are uh... not nearly as threatening as a human opponent, to put it mildly).

I think it would be pretty trivial to create an FF6 hack that literally was just a string of boss fights with access to all characters and their skillsets and one could make a game tailor-made for this sort of 'competitive battling'. You could even adjust stats slightly to make the PCs more balanced against eachother for just such an endeavor.

I can't think of any way to actually -enforce- the rules of competitive battling or keep score in-game using the current FF6 hacking tools though, which would make this a damn awesome little project.
