Plot POWAH Week 1
« on: November 13, 2012, 08:01:44 PM »
Since this is a bit outside the norm, I should probably establish the basic concept.

- A dueller is considered to 'win' when they cause the other dueller to submit.  This can be achieved via death, knockout, threatening their home planet, convincing them their life is a lie, being too adorable to maim, whatever.
- Since we're talking plot, a dueller's personality is just as important as their abilities.  Take that into consideration when pondering matches; a dueller might be able to blow up a planet, but if they never would then they should not do so for purposes of this tournament.
- In general, I encourage people to write out their logic in matches as much as possible.
- Be sure to note games for duellers.  A few characters are taken in specific forms where they have slightly different abilities than their known for.

As a special note, please just assume Gig has a body.  Thanks.

Divine Beings

Arek the Absolute (Lufia Series) vs Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI) - aaaaaaaaaaand no.  I don't even care, gleeful Arek antivote.
Althena (Lunar Series) vs Nyarlathotep (Persona 2) - kneejerk

Lenneth Valkyrie (Valkyrie Profile Series) vs Gig (Soul Nomad & The World Eaters) - Well I assume Gig can blow up the world, just Lenneth remakes it and stuff.  And Gig can be distracted fairly easily by hotpods from what I've seen.  Alas, this is not an awesomeness match.
Laharl (Disgaea Series) vs Seraphim Flonne (Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten) - IT'S LOVE~.  also i thought flonne was just an archangel in dis4 but whatever this changes nothing because IT'S LOVE~.  (also i am totally not going to take plot power fights between two disgaea characters seriously because fuck.dat)
Valmar (Grandia II) vs Ashunera (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) - I'm not even sure on this one, but kneejerk.
Arceus (Pokémon) vs Cthulhu (Cthulhu Saves the World) - CSTW Cthulhu totally would get a Master Ball and junk.

Superhumans

Stocke (Radiant Historia) vs Tir McDohl (Suikoden) - Stocke is a highly skilled operative but his schtick that sets him apart from others of his ilk is kind of limited in this format.  Tir on ze other hand has a True Rune.
T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Bowser (Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story) - Bowser, victim of narrative causality or something.

Emeralda Kasim (Xenogears) vs Belial (Wild ARMs 4) - kneejerk.

Warriors

Nephenee (Fire Emblem Series) vs Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics) - Also a kneejerk.

Karel (Fire Emblem Series) vs Thursday (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness)- shrug
Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII) vs Catiua Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together) - aaaaaaaaaaaa
Beatrix (Final Fantasy IX) vs Aelia (Valkyrie Profile) - shrug

Civilians

Ryogo Kusama (Front Mission 3) vs Cid Kramer (Final Fantasy VIII) - At least Ryogo does things.

Peasley (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (Wild ARMs 4) - I am trying to remember Peasley doing anything useful and failing.  I can't hear any arguments in his favor over the sound of WHAT THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO
Tengaar (Suikoden Series) vs A Rabite (Mana series) - It's.  A.  Rabite.

Divine Beings

Arek the Absolute (Lufia Series) vs Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI) - My general feelings here are "while Arek may control Sinistrals, Kefka shows he can destroy things by getting his own hands dirty."
Althena (Lunar Series) vs Nyarlathotep (Persona 2) - No contest really, Althena's pretty low-tier for a True Deity, she gets smacked around by mortals all the time. Nyarlie may depend on the darkness/fear-of-death/whatever in humans' hearts to exist, but he's pretty good at manipulating humans when he wants to subtle, and plenty good at just blowing shit up when he's not.
Vergil (SaGa Frontier) vs Izanami (Persona 4) - I think Vergil is actually more of a superbeing, but considering that even normal people in SaGa Frontier seem to fit into that category, it makes sense that Vergil's up here. Even when you beat him in-game, he just keeps regenerating or something, so I'm going with nigh-unkillable-ness over Izanami's more vague powers.
Ryu (Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter) vs Ultimecia (Final Fantasy VIII) - I haven't beaten BoF5, so I could be swayed, but I recall that Ryu using his full power outright kills him, so that's a bit of a limitation there that Ulti doesn't worry about. I'd also give her Griever credit and potential credit for any effects that Time Kompression might have on Ryu.

Lenneth Valkyrie (Valkyrie Profile Series) vs Gig (Soul Nomad & The World Eaters) - Lenneth makes Worlds, Gig eats them. Technically Lenneth should never run out of juice to keep up this cycle, but Gig's powers specifically increase the more things he has to consume, so eventually Infinity + Infinity beats regular old Infinity.
Laharl (Disgaea Series) vs Seraphim Flonne (Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten) - Oh, you jerk, Hatbot. Even as a Seraphim, Laharl is canonically more powerful than Flonne in the NIS universe. There's a level chart and everything! Go meta-ness! (Admittedly, Random makes a good point about Flonne knowing Laharl's biggest weakness.)
Valmar (Grandia II) vs Ashunera (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) - While Valmar was split up into multiple parts, Ashunera was split up into only two. The parts seem to have comparable power levels - Valmar pieces take hosts, can be beaten by humans, etc. Yune takes a host, Ashera can be beaten by humans, etc. I'm gonna go with "More parts likely equals more power when combined, given the parts are roughly equal."
Arceus (Pokémon) vs Cthulhu (Cthulhu Saves the World) - Slightly less easy to capture!

Superhumans

Stocke (Radiant Historia) vs Tir McDohl (Suikoden) - Hmm.. Spy with the power over Time, and a General with the power over Death. Good match-up. Overall, I think Stocke demonstrates better control over his abilities, so he probably gets the upper hand here.
Dhoulmagus (Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King) vs Yuri Hyuga (Shadow Hearts Series) - Yuri gets Amon at the very least, which is already a match for Dhoulmagus at his peak. If you give Yuri Seraphic Radiance, or take into account that he's defeated actual -Gods-, it's not really that close.
T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Bowser (Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story) - If you allow Giga Bowser, then T260G gets her form as the core of a giant spaceship, which evens the match up into something like "Godzilla vs. The Flying Saucer". I'm leaning T260G here, but it's honestly kinda close.
Katrina Lianne Elesius (Wild ARMs XF) vs Chu Chu (Xenogears)

Emeralda Kasim (Xenogears) vs Belial (Wild ARMs 4) - I think creating her own pocket dimension that she can crush at will beats out any advantage that Emeralda's Gear might give her, but it's still a decent match!
Gawn Brawdia (Wild ARMs 4) vs Vayne Aurelius (Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis) - This is a pretty close match. Just power-wise, Vayne has the upper hand, since he can theoretically wish anything to happen and that decides the match. However, even at his peak, his control over the ability is really limited. I suspect that Gawn's speed and training may be more than enough to take out Vayne if he's relying on his Mana power of Wishing. However, Vayne's also an Alchemist and has his battle-cat Sulphur that seems to provide pretty solid defense, so he may just avoid/outlast Gawn's assault. Leaning Vayne, though it could go either way.
Altima (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs Zack Fair (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) - Gods tend to be pretty weak in the FF series. They are regularly beaten down by humans, so just by virtue of being a Zodiac Demon, it doesn't mean that Altima wins here. However, Altima DOES possess a young girl, and that's kind of Zack's weakness.
Aya Brea (Parasite Eve) vs Zerase (Suikoden V) - I feel like Zerase has better control over her powers, and even if Aya tries to control Zerase's Mitochondria, there's no guarantee that 1.) Mitochondria from another universe like Suikoden's is compatible, or 2.) Zerase is even human, and therefore may not have Mitochondria. Conceivably, Aya's mutated status may actually make her some kind of demon/undead entity that would be weak about Zerase's Star rune, too.

Warriors

Edward 'Edge' Geraldine (Final Fantasy IV) vs Magdalen Harts (Wild ARMs: Alter Code F) - I just feel like Magdalen kicks more ass.
Nephenee (Fire Emblem Series) vs Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics) - Perhaps equal in melee skill, Delita is certainly smarter, and has to deal with bigger threats than a spear on a regular basis.
Flay Gunnar (Mana Khemia Series) vs Denam Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together)
Oboro (Suikoden V) vs Cliff Fittir (Star Ocean: Till the End of Time) - Oboro may be more clever, but Cliff's not actually unintelligent, and I stand by "Hammer of Might" as taking down most any threat Oboro can come up with.

Karel (Fire Emblem Series) vs Thursday (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness)
Anise Tatlin (Tales of the Abyss) vs Raquel Applegate (Wild ARMs 4) - Raquel wins on intelligence and battle savvy here. Anise has magic, which will be too slow, or her physical abilities with Tokunaga, which is most certainly not the largest enemy Raquel has ever taken down.
Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII) vs Catiua Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together)
Beatrix (Final Fantasy IX) vs Aelia (Valkyrie Profile) - Okay... so taking into account that even though Einherjar are consider minor deities in actual Norse mythology, they are pretty much just undead human warriors in Valkyrie Profile, so that's what they are being considered here. Beatrix, despite being a Paladin-type fighter, doesn't seem to actually have an anti-undead tricks, so no advantage there. Aelia is definitely one of the stronger warriors in the VP crew, and that handy little ability to turn into a Dragon, even for a short while, is good enough to give her this match to me.

Civilians

Ryogo Kusama (Front Mission 3) vs Cid Kramer (Final Fantasy VIII)
Gina (SaGa Frontier) vs Elmo (Front Mission 4)
Ion (Tales of the Abyss) vs Ryotaro Dojima (Persona 4) - While Dojima's a cop and wouldn't go out of his way to attack the Pope... well, he's certainly more likely to apprehend Ion if necessary than Ion is to go on the offensive. Also, Ion's offensive techniques tend to kill him, so it just seems easier for Ion to submit early.
Niccolo (Legend of Mana) vs Anastasia Romanov (Shadow Hearts: Covenant) - Magical Demon camera probably offsets any warrior prowess Niccolo has. Both are pretty scheming individuals, so they'd have no trouble fighting the other. I feel like Ana has more options to win here. Certainly, as an heiress, she could just pay off Niccolo.

Chiepoo (Suikoden IV) vs Edward Chris von Muir (Final Fantasy IV) - Chiepoo is probably the better fighter (debatable), but again, I'm going with the logic of "Edward HAS money, Chiepoo WANTS money, a deal is arranged."
Peasley (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (Wild ARMs 4) - I don't know what Peasley does, but Arnaud flies a jet into him.
Nanako Dojima (Persona 4) vs Teta Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics) - Teta can't bring herself to harm an adorable little girl who sings the Junes jingle. Nanako for Godlike.
Tengaar (Suikoden Series) vs A Rabite (Mana series) - Hmm.. I'd never thought of Tengaar as a basic human, but I suppose technically her Earth Rune isn't all that special in the Suikoden world. It's still enough to take out a Rabite, though. And as a JRPG PC, we implicitly know that Tengaar has no problems attacking wildlife.

SOME OF MY REASONINGS CONTAIN SPOILERS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Divine Beings

Arek the Absolute (Lufia Series) vs Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI) - Sure
Althena (Lunar Series) vs Nyarlathotep (Persona 2)
Vergil (SaGa Frontier) vs Izanami (Persona 4) - Not sure how I rank Vergil plot wise, but I think he can handle Izanami.
Ryu (Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter) vs Ultimecia (Final Fantasy VIII) - Ryu'd have to kill himself to win this, I think. But...he'd do it, if the alternative was letting her rule the world. Ultimecia has to survive to meet her win condition, Ryu does not. He just has to stop her.

Lenneth Valkyrie (Valkyrie Profile Series) vs Gig (Soul Nomad & The World Eaters) - This battle would go forever, and would be extremely awesome. But I don't quite think Gig can overcome A Ending Lenneth.
Laharl (Disgaea Series) vs Seraphim Flonne (Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten) - Laharl's heart isn't in it. They won't actually fight, he'll BS some excuse why he has better things to do and leave. Flonne wins by default.
Valmar (Grandia II) vs Ashunera (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) - Kneejerk, really.
Arceus (Pokémon) vs Cthulhu (Cthulhu Saves the World) - Arceus's plotpower is kinda nebulous as far as I know. However, what I do know is the plot power levels of shit like Dialga, Palkia, Groudon, Kyogre and all these nice uber legendaries. Aaaaaaand Arceus is solidly implied to be >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> them. Like it's not even a contest, he's just flat superior. Can I see that taking down a GOO that got himself de-powered once? Yup.

Superhumans

Stocke (Radiant Historia) vs Tir McDohl (Suikoden) - Stoke rewinds until he gets a chance to talk Tir out of entering the tournament in the first place. Tir won't open up the Soul Eater on a good guy, which Stocke is, so while he's stronger by miles....it doesn't matter.
Dhoulmagus (Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King) vs Yuri Hyuga (Shadow Hearts Series) - I'd vote Yuri over Rhapthorne, much less Dhouly.
T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Bowser (Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story) - Bowser never wins.
Katrina Lianne Elesius (Wild ARMs XF) vs Chu Chu (Xenogears)

Emeralda Kasim (Xenogears) vs Belial (Wild ARMs 4)
Gawn Brawdia (Wild ARMs 4) vs Vayne Aurelius (Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis) - Hard to call this one. But I think if Vayne has a reason to fight, Gawn will respect that and just put him to a test, rather then actively trying to kill him. And I think Vayne can pass the test.
Altima (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs Zack Fair (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) - Am I missing something about Zack that makes this anything but a clear Altima victory?
Aya Brea (Parasite Eve) vs Zerase (Suikoden V) - Hmm....yeah, always got the feeling that Zerase wasn't being serious. I think she can handle Aya.

Warriors

Edward 'Edge' Geraldine (Final Fantasy IV) vs Magdalen Harts (Wild ARMs: Alter Code F) - His plot hype from TAY carries him here, and he's glad I've played that.
Nephenee (Fire Emblem Series) vs Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics) - Delita will not fight her fairly, not if he thinks he has any reasonable chance of losing. Nephenee's a great fighter, but not smart enough not to walk into whatever plot Delita hatches.
Flay Gunnar (Mana Khemia Series) vs Denam Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together) - In one ending,  Denim gets killed by a single dude charging into the throne room and shooting him. That would never happen to Flay.
Oboro (Suikoden V) vs Cliff Fittir (Star Ocean: Till the End of Time) - Cliff can dodge high tech energy weapons. Oboro...uh...is an ex-assassin. I'm sure he's still very good, but Cliff's several times out of his league. He'll do his homework and promptly neglect to show up for the match.

Karel (Fire Emblem Series) vs Thursday (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness) - Karel's plot power is >>>>>>>>>> his gameplay power. He's some kind of uber badass in plot, for all that he's not plot important.
Anise Tatlin (Tales of the Abyss) vs Raquel Applegate (Wild ARMs 4) - The cutscene vs. Hugo settles this. Anise is strong, but Raquel is something else.
Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII) vs Catiua Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together) - Squall might be emo, but Catiua has the advanced emo plot power of actually killing herself. ....wait, that's not actually good for her here.
Beatrix (Final Fantasy IX) vs Aelia (Valkyrie Profile) - This....is rough. Beatrix is a beast, plot and gameplay wise. But Aelia actually turns into a giant fuck off dragon. I....think that gives her the edge?

Civilians

Ryogo Kusama (Front Mission 3) vs Cid Kramer (Final Fantasy VIII)
Gina (SaGa Frontier) vs Elmo (Front Mission 4)
Ion (Tales of the Abyss) vs Ryotaro Dojima (Persona 4) - Dojima: "Stop right there, kid! You're under arrest!" Ion: *goes peacefully*
Niccolo (Legend of Mana) vs Anastasia Romanov (Shadow Hearts: Covenant) - She can prolly get some really nice blackmail material on him.

Chiepoo (Suikoden IV) vs Edward Chris von Muir (Final Fantasy IV) - Djinn's logic works here.
Peasley (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (Wild ARMs 4) - Whatever.
Nanako Dojima (Persona 4) vs Teta Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics) - Has the plot power advantage of getting kidnapped but actually surviving.
Tengaar (Suikoden Series) vs A Rabite (Mana series) - ...................

Arek the Absolute (Lufia Series) vs Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI)
From what we know in Lufia 2, he might just be the administrator of the Sinistrals or something (Obama can't necessarily defeat Seal Team Six).  The bit about him being more powerful than an aftergame superboss is something - but what are his strengths?  Weaknesses?  We have no idea.  I'm going to assume he's weak to sarcastic quips.

Althena (Lunar Series) vs Nyarlathotep (Persona 2)
Don't know Nyarlie well enough to guess, but these characters are both pretty scrubby for deities.

Ryu (Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter) vs Ultimecia (Final Fantasy VIII) vs. Double KO
Yeah, they're both dying, that's all there is to say about this.   If I had to vote it'd probably be for Ulti, loosely defined time powers are problematic when Ryu is already dying just naturally.

Valmar (Grandia II) vs Ashunera (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn)
Blargh Ashunera.  (Even with a rough idea of her powers, her style/personality is hard to guess.)  Well both of these destroy the world, both have massive internal personality conflicts (Millenia, Yune), both rely on humans to take up their powers...  hrmm.  If we assume Millenia & Yune are being unhelpful and not being team players here (if not outright betraying to the other side), Valmar corrupts crap and spawns monsters, but Ashera turns almost the entire world to stone.  That's a pretty impressive magical feat.

Arceus (Pokémon) vs Cthulhu (Cthulhu Saves the World)
Hero Cthulu could certainly take up Pokemon training, after some quips about using his army of Pokemon to drive the world mad, oh wait I'm a hero now fine to save the world.

Superhumans

Stocke (Radiant Historia) vs Tir McDohl (Suikoden)
Stocke has an argument against really anyone he can escape alive against via replaying the fight over and over until it works, and/or killing the person in some sneaky way, but (being a game) Stocke doesn't really do that kind of surprise assassination stuff in-game.  That said, Tir strikes me as having the kind of power that can kill you where you stand rather than leave you on the brink of death.  I'd want to know (I've forgotten) if enemies you defeat in S1 get long death monologues, but inclined to say no at the moment.

Dhoulmagus (Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King) vs Yuri Hyuga (Shadow Hearts Series)
Yuri kind of rolls the rest of superhuman to me.

T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Bowser (Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story)
Bowser not in Warriors where he can do some damage?  Alas.  Well, go Bowser.

Katrina Lianne Elesius (Wild ARMs XF) vs Chu Chu (Xenogears)
Wasn't it Fear Clysmian that was nommed?  Whatever, I assume that's really the opponent.  Think the Chuansformation does its bloody work here.  The badly drawn post-battle art implies that fighting the Fear Clysmian is about having COURAGE and HOPE and FAITH and all that or something and keeping going when all seems lost, and Chu certainly qualifies.  (I'm not even sure Chu gets to the point of things seeming hopeless anyway.)  I'm ignoring the "must have a magic princess around to kill it" requirement because Katrina does this herself anyway to the Fear Clysmian.

Emeralda Kasim (Xenogears) vs Belial (Wild ARMs 4)
The way to defeat Belial is to provoke her into going crazy and wasting her power.  Best way of doing that is to go kill Scythe.  I'm not sure Emeralda is the type to pick a fight with Scythe though, and it's far from clear she'd even beat him then manage to beat Belial after she sucks Emeralda into some dimension of pain.

Gawn Brawdia (Wild ARMs 4) vs Vayne Aurelius (Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis)
The only way I can see this as having a fight after all is for villain Vayne to be on the scene....  and luckily for Vayne that's his most powerful version.  Shoots 12 of Vayne's missiles then punches the 13th one?  MK Alchemists certainly can throw a lot of stuff on the field, bad for Mr. 12 shots...

Altima (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs Zack Fair (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII)
Cloud becomes a level 1 amnesiac wuss when he visits Ivalice and the Buster Sword is hidden on top of a friggin' Volcano.  Don't see why it would be different for Zack.

Aya Brea (Parasite Eve) vs Zerase (Suikoden V)
This is a quickdraw, but since Aya can set Zerase on fire from a distance aside from just shooting her, I think Zerase knows well enough to steer clear of this one.

Warriors

Nephenee (Fire Emblem Series) vs Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics)
I don't see Nephenee as the type to seduce Delita then stab him in the back, and she loses a straight fight (if Delita can beat Zalmo he can beat a random soldier!).

Oboro (Suikoden V) vs Cliff Fittir (Star Ocean: Till the End of Time)
Nether Gate is implied to be pretty badass, but Cliff doesn't really have any notable researchable flaws, and his race is generally badass as well.  Not really Oboro's match, he's better against duelers with some exploitable flaw.

Karel (Fire Emblem Series) vs Thursday (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness)
Yup.

Anise Tatlin (Tales of the Abyss) vs Raquel Applegate (Wild ARMs 4)
Yeah, while Raquel has no partiular powers, she hangs out and keeps up with people who are clearly Superhuman, so even denied the power of teamwork & friendship she ain't bad.

Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII) vs Catiua Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together)
I nommed Squall for Superhuman, unfortunately for Ciatiua, so this isn't much of a match to me.  SeeDs are pretty badass and defeat even warrior magic emo princess.

Beatrix (Final Fantasy IX) vs Aelia (Valkyrie Profile)
Munch munch.

Civilians

Ryogo Kusama (Front Mission 3) vs Cid Kramer (Final Fantasy VIII)
Umm...  since Ryogo is in Civilian, I'm assuming he doesn't have a wanzer.  In which case this is a heated argument more than a fight.  But then Cid says "screw this, Squall you're in charge, I'm going to my sweet vacation orphanage resort."

Ion (Tales of the Abyss) vs Ryotaro Dojima (Persona 4)
Ion can defintely trick Dojima into dying, except from in-game this probably means saying "I'll get arrested but let's visit this dangerous place first" followed by sealing them both inside or something.  But sometimes Dojima just shoots Ion, so yeah, leaning that way.

Chiepoo (Suikoden IV) vs Edward Chris von Muir (Final Fantasy IV)
Djinn's logic works, yes.

Peasley (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (Wild ARMs 4)
Arnaud is not very good in Warriors, but he's not a civilian!  Oh well.

Tengaar (Suikoden Series) vs A Rabite (Mana series)
Tengaar is a warrior brought up in, I quote, the "Warrior's Village."  Who fights in-game & all.  Yeah I'd see her in Warriors myself, which is a shame since I was looking forward to some great confrontations like Nanako vs. A Rabite.

Divine Beings
Arek the Absolute (Lufia Series) vs Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI) - Kefka is an ascended human, while I would rate Arek around a mid-level deity. That said, if we know anything about Arek, it's that he's content to sit around and watch while some other folks destroy the world. Non-interference counts as a Kefka win.

Arceus (Pokémon) vs Cthulhu (Cthulhu Saves the World) - Arceus is pretty much the most powerful being in his cosmology. Cthulu isn't exactly from that cosmology, or any other comprehensible one, but if I recall my Lovecraft correctly then Cthulu is not one of the greatest of the Old Ones, merely their herald. (OK, Team Cthulu can take on one of the greatest and win, but he's alone here.) I'll bet on Arceus.

Superhumans

T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Bowser (Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story) - On the left, a robot designed to thwart a galaxy-destroying menace. On the right, a dragon that can't reliably keep a princess captured nor fight off a Brooklyn tradesman. Yyyeah.

Altima (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs Zack Fair (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) - Sounds like voting on FF7 Zack is inadvisable, so abstain.

Warriors

Edward 'Edge' Geraldine (Final Fantasy IV) vs Magdalen Harts (Wild ARMs: Alter Code F) - WA1 Magdalen doesn't get an abstain, though. I predict a revisit of Edge vs Rubicante, except Magdalen's more likely to gracefully "admit defeat" and let the younger generation take the lead in round two than to actually lose.

Nephenee (Fire Emblem Series) vs Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics) - Delita > Generic Soldier, even if the soldier has a name and portrait.

Civilians

Chiepoo (Suikoden IV) vs Edward Chris von Muir (Final Fantasy IV) Buys his way to a win? Sure, makes sense.

Divine Beings
Valmar (Grandia II) vs Ashunera (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) - According to Grandia 2, Valmar fought against Granas and lost and was then sealed into different pieces. Based on my refresher on wikis regarding Ashunera, she flooded the entire continent by her lonesome, created all living creatures and sealed herself up instead of being sealed up by others. My guess is, she's the stronger of the two deities.

Superhumans
Katrina Lianne Elesius (Wild ARMs XF) vs Chu Chu (Xenogears) - Later

Emeralda Kasim (Xenogears) vs Belial (Wild ARMs 4) - Emmy has some nanotech stuff that I guess is similar to ARMS in WA4. But given that Belial can create her own space pockets and destroy them at will, I get the feeling she's a little out of her league here.
Gawn Brawdia (Wild ARMs 4) vs Vayne Aurelius (Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis) - Gawn's actually fairly ruthless when he needs to be (see the scene when you escape from the Forgotten city + when he visits Lambda after completing his assignment) and he's shown that unless specifically compelled, he sticks to what he must to complete his job. Vayne's not exactly written to be very strong willed by his lonesome, and my guess is that unless they meet some time before and Vayne manages to establish some sort of connection with Gawn (which is hard, given Vayne is kind of an introvert), Gawn isn't going to pull his punches.
Altima (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs Zack Fair (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) - Did Altima have full control possessing Alma? Never felt like that to me and I was all set on voting Zack since he's basically fought stuff that was godlike and won. Then Djinn reminded me that Altima takes Alma hostage and probably wins from there.

Warriors
Edward 'Edge' Geraldine (Final Fantasy IV) vs Magdalen Harts (Wild ARMs: Alter Code F) - Based on what I remember from FF4 writing (and this is a while back), Edge is supposed to be pretty resourceful. Mags' backstory has him resigning from being a drifter based on prior mistakes due to poor judgment. He later hands his mantle of protecting Jane to Rudy when he realized that he could protect her than him. Edge probably does something to convince Magdalen to step down similarly.
Nephenee (Fire Emblem Series) vs Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics) - Delita probably schemes a victory out of this one is my kneejerk.
Flay Gunnar (Mana Khemia Series) vs Denam Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together) - Denam's a hero and all, but Flay is so badass that he had to create his own evil organization because he ran out of bad guys to beat. Denam never even succeeds at fully quelling off naysayers as in one ending he even gets killed by an assassination. You know what Flay would've done? Gone looking for said assassin before they come close.
Oboro (Suikoden V) vs Cliff Fittir (Star Ocean: Till the End of Time) - Going with the crowd here. Cliff's race doesn't have really anything exploitable and nothing that we learn about Cliff (other than his sparring records with Mirage, which are ambiguous anyway) reveal any information that would be incriminating. In straight up combat, Cliff still probably has the advantage. Not good.

Anise Tatlin (Tales of the Abyss) vs Raquel Applegate (Wild ARMs 4) - Total mismatch as far as I know. Raquel is shown to be able to overpower people who are close to superhuman (see Hugo fight scene) and the only thing that's really holding her back in terms of combat prowess is her illness. Anise might be a spy, but she's not written as being terribly competent at the role and fighting straight up against Raq is just really asking for it.
Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII) vs Catiua Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together) - Erm...what? Squall is pretty much implied to be the best in his class, is promoted to Commander over the course of the story and generally makes good judgment decisions. The only thing I recall Catiua having is being recognized as royalty (which doesn't increase any aspect of skill) and then going really emo. Squall tells her to talk to a wall, Catiua leaves in tears. The end.
Beatrix (Final Fantasy IX) vs Aelia (Valkyrie Profile) - Mm...this is good. Aelia's basically a lesser deity, but even as a soldier she could turn into a damn dragon. Granted Beatrix is basically the best fighter in FF9 and basically levels nations by her lonesome. Is that enough here? Mmm...sure. Lesser deities in VP weren't all that hype IIRC.

Civilians
Ryogo Kusama (Front Mission 3) vs Cid Kramer (Final Fantasy VIII) - CK pairs off the best people to face off against each other. Cid doesn't do much but you get the feeling that he was at least Garden's administrator for a bit and at the very least, he had to have helped start Garden. Ryogo is like a high school drop out who just happens to be good at piloting moving tanks. While Ryogo is obviously the better fighter, honestly, I think he probably wouldn't give two hoots. The worse Cid can do is flunk Ryogo if he signs up to join SeeD and maybe throw a tantrum. Ryogo goes, "Dude, where's my GF" and resigns to go find hot women. Once again, Ryogo loses due to negative plot power.
Ion (Tales of the Abyss) vs Ryotaro Dojima (Persona 4) - Dojima uses his cop powers. Ion is compelled to obey. Not much more here.

Peasley (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (Wild ARMs 4) - Arnaud's written very much as a civilian who just got into the wrong job with the wrong group of people. He just happens to be very smart and can weasel his way out of most situations. Based on what I am reading regarding Peasley, that's enough.
Nanako Dojima (Persona 4) vs Teta Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics) - I don't think either would try to make the other "submit" as defined by CK. But Nanako wins on account of having a nose. Yes, my logic is flawless.

Divine Beings

Arek the Absolute (Lufia Series) vs Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI): My vote goes to the person who actually does things.
Ryu (Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter) vs Ultimecia (Final Fantasy VIII): uh

Laharl (Disgaea Series) vs Seraphim Flonne (Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten): Person who isn't anywhere near Divine in the Disgaea I played... versus person who isn't anywhere near Divine in the Disgaea I played. I will abstain!
Valmar (Grandia II) vs Ashunera (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn): Going with the crowd here. The mass petrification + continent flooding are both pretty impressive in a battle between vague cosmic forces.
Arceus (Pokémon) vs Cthulhu (Cthulhu Saves the World): blah blah Arceus plot, don't really care when you're just another pokemon who gets put in a ball in-game. HERO CTHULHU probably isn't as powerful as Lovecraft Cthulhu but he gets the job done. (Also he does still have the power to cause mass insanity.)

Superhumans

Stocke (Radiant Historia) vs Tir McDohl (Suikoden): The arguments about Stocke trying to rewind time until he can convince Tir not to show up do make some sense, but the problem is Tir is a bit of a different level of what Stocke deals with in-game... if he screws up once, he's Soul Eater food and can't return to a previous time.
Dhoulmagus (Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King) vs Yuri Hyuga (Shadow Hearts Series): Yuri's beaten up demons who impress me more than Rhapthorne proper maybe? Certainly more than anyone merely possessed by Rhapthorne though.
T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Bowser (Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story): Bowser, sadly, is out of his league against superhumans unless they do something to specifically piss him off. So T260G is screwed if she tries to take over Bowser's castle or kidnap Princess Peach. I don't think she'll do either though, which leaves them a bit mismatched.
Katrina Lianne Elesius (Wild ARMs XF) vs Chu Chu (Xenogears): Katrina in Superhuman's actually kinda weird to me? Katrina-possessed-by-Fear is Divine, regular Katrina is probably a warrior at best (can channel the power of guardians, but can't actually fight...). Regardless, I don't think I buy Chu-Chu in this division. She can grow to monstrous size and be colossally unimpressive, oh boy.

Emeralda Kasim (Xenogears) vs Belial (Wild ARMs 4): Now, see, Emeralda I actually buy as being worthy of this division. Unfortunately for her Belial's pretty much at the top of the WA4 power scale and only loses because she goes crazy-vengeful and overextends her powers. No reason that happens here, so she traps Emeralda in a pocket dimension and that's that.
Gawn Brawdia (Wild ARMs 4) vs Vayne Aurelius (Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis): Really not sure how to deal with Vayne and the Shaq Fu fanboyism. Somewhat inclined to kneejerk buy Tide's argument that Gawn can actually get shit done while Vayne will be wishy-washy about things, but not certain.

Warriors

Edward 'Edge' Geraldine (Final Fantasy IV) vs Magdalen Harts (Wild ARMs: Alter Code F): Edge is pretty much played as incompetent. CHARGING RUBICANT YESZ. Magdalen, on the other hand... his experience lies in dealing with hot-headed youngsters. That's enough, here.
Nephenee (Fire Emblem Series) vs Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics): It's a good match on raw combat, but like Delita lets it come to that. The day before the match, Queen Elincia has Nephenee tossed in prison based on some evidence which Delita "conveniently" left for Volke to find.
Flay Gunnar (Mana Khemia Series) vs Denam Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together): Denam conquers a continent, but Flay conquers half the world!
Oboro (Suikoden V) vs Cliff Fittir (Star Ocean: Till the End of Time): Oboro could use some underhanded methods to win, probably, but I dunno. Wouldn't be shocked if poisons that work on humans would have at best limited effect on Cliff. And if this comes to anything resembling a straight fight, well...

Karel (Fire Emblem Series) vs Thursday (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness): Karel is sadly badass plotwise.
Anise Tatlin (Tales of the Abyss) vs Raquel Applegate (Wild ARMs 4): hahahaha no.
Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII) vs Catiua Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together): way to go Catiua, owned in the mental fortitude department by an anti-social 17-year old. (He's also got more combat hype.)
Beatrix (Final Fantasy IX) vs Aelia (Valkyrie Profile): Not sure what I make of einherjar in general, but Beatrix has more specific hype within her universe.

Civilians

Niccolo (Legend of Mana) vs Anastasia Romanov (Shadow Hearts: Covenant): Sure, demon-summoning camera.

Chiepoo (Suikoden IV) vs Edward Chris von Muir (Final Fantasy IV): Chiepoo actually shows some bravery. Edward is best-known for running and hiding as soon as things aren't going his way. Plus he'd probably miss the match because he's too busy moping about Anna.
Peasley (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (Wild ARMs 4): Don't see why Arnaud's not a warrior? He's capable with magic and was good enough for soldiers to hire as a mercenary. Yeah, his cowardice makes him an unimpressive warrior, but...
Tengaar (Suikoden Series) vs A Rabite (Mana series): Um.

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.
Maybe.

Divine Beings

Arek the Absolute (Lufia Series) vs Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI)- Arek does so little on camera that it's hard to actually judge his power.
Vergil (SaGa Frontier) vs Izanami (Persona 4)-
Ryu (Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter) vs Ultimecia (Final Fantasy VIII)- One of the thi ngs BoF5 did well was make Wyrm's plot power match it's gameplay power.  Those be some scary dragons.

Lenneth Valkyrie (Valkyrie Profile Series) vs Gig (Soul Nomad & The World Eaters)

Superhumans

Dhoulmagus (Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King) vs Yuri Hyuga (Shadow Hearts Series)

Emeralda Kasim (Xenogears) vs Belial (Wild ARMs 4)- Feels like a slaughter to me.
Gawn Brawdia (Wild ARMs 4) vs Vayne Aurelius (Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis)- Gawn is a good deal more forceful, but I think he's outmatched power wise. Vayne is immensely strong near the end.
Aya Brea (Parasite Eve) vs Zerase (Suikoden V)

Warriors

Edward 'Edge' Geraldine (Final Fantasy IV) vs Magdalen Harts (Wild ARMs: Alter Code F)- Edge comes off as the most competent person in TAY, yeah.
Nephenee (Fire Emblem Series) vs Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics)

Karel (Fire Emblem Series) vs Thursday (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness)- Slaughter.
Anise Tatlin (Tales of the Abyss) vs Raquel Applegate (Wild ARMs 4)- Anise has a little plot power, but not that much.
Beatrix (Final Fantasy IX) vs Aelia (Valkyrie Profile)

Civilians

Gina (SaGa Frontier) vs Elmo (Front Mission 4)- Strong, strong kneejerk. Elmo exists to be an incompetent failure.
Ion (Tales of the Abyss) vs Ryotaro Dojima (Persona 4)- Ion has power, Dojima has the will to use it. Eh. >Think the former trumpst he latter here.
Niccolo (Legend of Mana) vs Anastasia Romanov (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)

Re: Tir vs. Stocke

My main thing here is that I don't think Tir will actually use the Soul Eater on him. Since while you use it in gameplay constantly, Tir doesn't actually use the rune in plot ever(unless I'm sorely misremembering). When you actually get a prompt to use it in plot and pick that, you get stopped from using it because "it's too dangerous", then Joshua comes in and uses his Dragon Rune instead. I mean, he never even uses it in plot to just off even really nasty enemy generals, so what reason would he have to use it on Stocke? It's that whole thing CK noted about personality being just as important as the actual plot power.

Divine Beings

Arek the Absolute (Lufia Series) vs Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI)- Well I'd definitely vote Kefka over a Sinistral so.
Althena (Lunar Series) vs Nyarlathotep (Persona 2)- Both are odd cases.  Nyarlie's power seems pretty limited in the real world, albeit he does demonstrate some ability to make his realm spill into the material plane.  Althena's power seems to be largely tied up in her creation.  Still, we do see her throw some lightning bolts 'n such without wiping out creation, while I'm not terribly inclined to give Nyarlie weeks to merge the spiritual realm with the physical.
Vergil (SaGa Frontier) vs Izanami (Persona 4)- As above.
Ryu (Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter) vs Ultimecia (Final Fantasy VIII)- I always assumed Ultimecia's power was ramped up by Kompressing Time and absorbing other sorceresses.  So as above.

Lenneth Valkyrie (Valkyrie Profile Series) vs Gig (Soul Nomad & The World Eaters)- I don't think Gig actually was a Soul Eater?  So Lenneth has deeper reserves.
Laharl (Disgaea Series) vs Seraphim Flonne (Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten)- Not of the votans.
Valmar (Grandia II) vs Ashunera (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn)- Mostly kneejerk.  Valmar has the whole flying giant moon demon thing going and I'm not really sure how Ashunera deals with this.
Arceus (Pokémon) vs Cthulhu (Cthulhu Saves the World)- Well the only thing we really see Cthulhu use his true power to do is induce global gibbering madness which I'm not sure is relevant against a pokeyman...

Superhumans

Stocke (Radiant Historia) vs Tir McDohl (Suikoden)- Let's go with "Stocke can't survive screwups against Tir".
Dhoulmagus (Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King) vs Yuri Hyuga (Shadow Hearts Series)- Dhouly's got some skill in widespread curses but Yuri's got skill in widespread earthquakes.
T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Bowser (Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story)- I'm just going to envision this as a glorious Giga Bowser vs Spaceship battle.  Everyone wins.
Katrina Lianne Elesius (Wild ARMs XF) vs Chu Chu (Xenogears)- Y'know, freaky possessed Katrina would totally crucify a bitch.

Emeralda Kasim (Xenogears) vs Belial (Wild ARMs 4)- pocket dimensions.
Gawn Brawdia (Wild ARMs 4) vs Vayne Aurelius (Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis)- Vayne just has no conscious control of his powers.
Altima (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs Zack Fair (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII)
Aya Brea (Parasite Eve) vs Zerase (Suikoden V)

Warriors

Edward 'Edge' Geraldine (Final Fantasy IV) vs Magdalen Harts (Wild ARMs: Alter Code F)- I feel like old and more seasoned TAY Edge wouldn't have much problem, but in his youth just too easy to manipulate.
Nephenee (Fire Emblem Series) vs Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics)
Flay Gunnar (Mana Khemia Series) vs Denam Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together)- No vote.
Oboro (Suikoden V) vs Cliff Fittir (Star Ocean: Till the End of Time)

Karel (Fire Emblem Series) vs Thursday (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness)
Anise Tatlin (Tales of the Abyss) vs Raquel Applegate (Wild ARMs 4)
Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII) vs Catiua Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together)- Nein.
Beatrix (Final Fantasy IX) vs Aelia (Valkyrie Profile)- Aelia's powers are hard to quantify, Beatrix is unambiguously a walking army.

Civilians

Ryogo Kusama (Front Mission 3) vs Cid Kramer (Final Fantasy VIII)- Nope.
Gina (SaGa Frontier) vs Elmo (Front Mission 4)- Nothin'.
Ion (Tales of the Abyss) vs Ryotaro Dojima (Persona 4)
Niccolo (Legend of Mana) vs Anastasia Romanov (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)- And again.

Chiepoo (Suikoden IV) vs Edward Chris von Muir (Final Fantasy IV)- See Edge.  Older and Wiser Eddie would be fine, FFIV eddie cries and Chiepoo pushes him down.
Peasley (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (Wild ARMs 4)- Peasley has a wussy rapier and a flying skateboard.  Arnaud's dealt with worse.
Nanako Dojima (Persona 4) vs Teta Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics)
Tengaar (Suikoden Series) vs A Rabite (Mana series)- Iie.
CK: She is the female you

I agree with the above.

Divine Beings

Arek the Absolute (Lufia Series) vs Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI) - Arek lose by default as there were no actual demonstration of his power.
Althena (Lunar Series) vs Nyarlathotep (Persona 2) - It is a matter of resources, Nyarlie has a multi-verse of humanity to utilize.
Vergil (SaGa Frontier) vs Izanami (Persona 4) - On the other hand, Izanami feel like a nerfed Nyarlie.
Ryu (Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter) vs Ultimecia (Final Fantasy VIII) - I say neither of the two can be considered divine. But Ulty can't handle Ryu's pure destructive power.

Lenneth Valkyrie (Valkyrie Profile Series) vs Gig (Soul Nomad & The World Eaters) - Gid has Overlord class output + his ability as a "Regulator" over death. He surpass Lenneth in pure power scale and his ability as a "Regulator" can seal off her other soul related tricks.... but Gig is an idiot, and can be easily bought off by a lot of meanings. Lenneth is intelligent enough to make a total fool out of Gig.
Laharl (Disgaea Series) vs Archangel Flonne (Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten) - First, Flonne is only an Archangel. And this is not even a match, Laharl wouldn't want to fight Flonne.
Valmar (Grandia II) vs Ashunera (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) - Another case of pure destructive power can crush its opposition.
Arceus (Pokémon) vs Cthulhu (Cthulhu Saves the World) - This match sucks

Superhumans

Stocke (Radiant Historia) vs Tir McDohl (Suikoden) - Another victory of pure destructive power.
Dhoulmagus (Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King) vs Yuri Hyuga (Shadow Hearts Series) - And this a one sided slaughter.
T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Bowser (Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story) - Read above.
Katrina Lianne Elesius (Wild ARMs XF) vs Chu Chu (Xenogears) - The Disaster of Fear has very limited power. Chu Chu just need to stump her.

Emeralda Kasim (Xenogears) vs Belial (Wild ARMs 4) - We need less one sided slaughter like this.
Gawn Brawdia (Wild ARMs 4) vs Vayne Aurelius (Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis) - Vayne hope he has better control of his power.
Altima (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs Zack Fair (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) - Lucavis are clearly defeatable within human boundaries. Accounting that Zack is capable of beating a monster spawned by Minerva's Material, I say he should not have much problem against the Blood Stained Holy Angel.
Aya Brea (Parasite Eve) vs Zerase (Suikoden V) - I'll just coin toss this one.

Warriors

Edward 'Edge' Geraldine (Final Fantasy IV) vs Magdalen Harts (Wild ARMs: Alter Code F)
Nephenee (Fire Emblem Series) vs Delita Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics)
Flay Gunnar (Mana Khemia Series) vs Denam Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together)
Oboro (Suikoden V) vs Cliff Fittir (Star Ocean: Till the End of Time)

Karel (Fire Emblem Series) vs Thursday (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness)
Anise Tatlin (Tales of the Abyss) vs Raquel Applegate (Wild ARMs 4) - This division has little cast that has worthwhile plot power.
Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII) vs Catiua Pavel (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together)
Beatrix (Final Fantasy IX) vs Aelia (Valkyrie Profile) - Aelia should really be int he Super Human division.

Civilians

Ryogo Kusama (Front Mission 3) vs Cid Kramer (Final Fantasy VIII)
Gina (SaGa Frontier) vs Elmo (Front Mission 4)
Ion (Tales of the Abyss) vs Ryotaro Dojima (Persona 4)
Niccolo (Legend of Mana) vs Anastasia Romanov (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)

Chiepoo (Suikoden IV) vs Edward Chris von Muir (Final Fantasy IV)
Peasley (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (Wild ARMs 4)
Nanako Dojima (Persona 4) vs Teta Hyral (Final Fantasy Tactics) - This match needs a lot and a lot of fire.
Tengaar (Suikoden Series) vs A Rabite (Mana series)
