NEB: I was thinking the lazy shell, Ghost medal, and so on vs. Culex.

But the crystals got to act turn 1 off thier speeds? I guess that'd give the status whore crystal the win.

Snowfire: As far as Raine's defense goes, even buffed 10% it's still BELOW average (like 240 to 255). And I Ox's 2HKO against her was based purely on her HP.

And yeah, his Mdef is utterly average so she 4HKOs him.

DHE: Hence the "Meeple claims" part.  Everything being fixed damage squares with my recollection as well, but according to Meeple that changed in the GBA version or something, and the magic stat was in the SNES version.

Pyro: Raine's defense buff is +15% DEF, actually.  Which....  apparently makes her above-average defense, but just barely.  I guess I have to math this out after all.  I'd see Ox's damage as around 0.45 PCHP, Raine has .85 PCHP ...  hrmm, I suppose Ox barely, barely, barely maintains his 2HKO then (although random variance might screw with it a little).  For Raine's damage...   blargh ToS mages.  The way I'd see it, they either have "good" damage but are insanely slow (the no-combo average) or have meh damage and are only a little slow (the combo average) or somewhere in-between (the mix).  If we even gave Raine free choice, she either gets the 3HKO but far fewer doubles, or gets some doubles but is 4HKOing (unless the GBA BoF1 Ox is used, in which case he's still 3HKOed due to awful MDef).  Either one is a tad problematic.

I suppose Ox has a better argument than expected since yeah, I expected Raine's defense buff to be a bit more effective than it actually is, and he's in one of those "barely turns the dial from 3HKO to 2HKO on healer" positions, but eh.  Both the BoF1 & ToS casts cheat the averages a tad (ToS with all the humanoid-killing nonsense, BoF1 because Karn-food Mogu & Gobi exist), but I'm still probably more inclined to just gut respect check respect Raine in the fail-off.  Fair points though.

Everyone in BoF1 has the same MDef. Wisdom is the magic attack stat, and only affects damage taken if you are defending.

Technically, Magic Attack is meaningless in BoF1 because all attacks do set damage.  Though yes, Magic Defense applies when you use Defend, as characters do take variable levels of reduction.

I think the Shield spell works similarly.

Regardless though, saying "Wisdom =/= Magic Defense" is fair, and that's what actually matters here.  BoF1, your HP is your Magic Durability, all things considered, and against Status and such, everyone is dead average.

Yeah, you're right, not sure what I was thinking with the attack comment.

Sa-Lews (Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millenium) vs Shania (Shadow Hearts: From the New World)
Ashera (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) vs Xorn (Grandia III): Regardless of how limited thunderclap is when it comes to hitting a lot of targets, it has one important thing going for it vs. Ashera: it ignores counters, since in FE any kind of AoE attack ignores them, no matter how small. Ashera would really like the extra free hit or two she's get from countering in this fight, since it would leave Xorn with so much less HP when he starts pulling out limit moves. 1 less hit from Ashera = 2 more of Xorn's good attacks, basically, which in all likelyhood will be dimension gate finishers.
Rashidi (Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen) vs Kefka (Final Fantasy VI)

Heavy

Nel Zelpher (Star Ocean: Till the End of Time) vs Beatrix (Final Fantasy IX): 2 duelers with lots of variety and small situational tricks/interp calls, and I've seen both in game but don't remember any details. :/ I hate matches like this.
Tana (Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones) vs Vyse (Skies of Arcadia): Needs increm for the OHKO, but he can cast it turn 1 and it tanks him up a bit, so he can probably spare 2 turns for that + counterstrike
Rune Walsh (Phantasy Star IV: End of the Millenium) vs Hiro (Lunar: Eternal Blue)

Middle

Stocke (Radiant Historia) vs Nergal (Fire Emblem: The Blazing Sword)
Ox (Breath of Fire) vs Raine Sage (Tales of Symphonia): Ox a shit
Anise Tatlin (Tales of the Abyss) vs Dekar (Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals)
Guy (Fire Emblem: The Blazing Sword) vs Aelia (Valkyrie Profile):

Light

Mallow (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars) vs Algus Sadalfas (Final Fantasy Tactics)
Cid Pollendina (Final Fantasy IV) vs Vitali (Soul Nomad & The World Eaters): FF4DS Cid: About 35% PCHP damage, 80% speed. That's... good enough to take Vitali down? I suppose?
Cathedral (Xenosaga: Jenseits von Gut und Bose) vs Melville (Suikoden III)

Ashera's auras don't have counters anyway. Instead they have Aurora, which doesn't work like a counter, kicking in instantly as the attacker does damage (including both parts of a double, notably) except on killing blows. Don't think I'd see GT/MT getting past that, though of course you don't have any on the PC end to check, so I can see disagreeing.
