Proving Grounds- The Bravely default superspecial.
« on: May 02, 2014, 01:40:40 PM »
I'm planning on running a Proving Grounds that mostly Bravely Default. Who do you all want to see, and in what division? There are some obvious ideas (Holly in L/M, Knight in H/G) but I'm looking for ideas here. This won't go up until most of the current spate of players are through the game, or are through enough to be able to vote on it.

Other games and character suggestions are welcome, of course.

For BD, the biggest Proving Ground bait from the jobs is Vampire, in the Heavy/Godlike border, though I'm interested in Ominas in Heavy/Godlike (that's so damn much HP and three accurate status options. It's kind of like a spin on the Dehuai build). I'd also like to see Thief or Jackal in Middle/Heavy and Red Mage or Swordmaster in Light/Middle (maybe Summoner too).

For other games, hmmm. More FEA nods, maybe? Tharja in Middle/Heavy, at least.

You'd have to open a Proving Grounds: Puny for that (but hoooooooooooooooly shit, super).

Tharja's been in some tournaments already though, she's a (cool) High Middle.  There's a ton of FEA duelers that haven't been used much yet that are still neat.  Light/Middle: Lissa, Virion, Anna, Henry.  Middle/Heavy: Cherche, Cordelia, Sumia, Tiki, Flavia.  Heavy/Godlike: Gangrel, Walhart.  None of these are particularly exposed.

BD Duelers I'd be interested in seeing:
(High Godlike, not really much for PG but maybe their own HG topic): Braev Lee, Alternis
Heavy/Godlike: Dark Knight, Time Mage, Knight, Wizard, Pirate, Monk, Profiteur
Middle/Heavy: Thief, Templar, Ranger, Holly
Light/Middle: Red Mage, Freelancer, White Mage, Summoner
Puny/Light: Performer, Spiritmaster

Duelers that would be meh, but suggested locations:
Heavy/Godlike: Arcanist, Vampire, Merchant, Salve-Maker w/ goodies
Middle/Heavy: Spell Fencer, Ninja, Salve-Maker w/ no Norende
Light/Middle: Swordmaster, Conjurer, Valkyrie

Lots of these aren't very fun in the DL for me (Ninja, Conjurer) or just translate disappointingly (Valkyrie, Spell Fencer) or are interp train-wrecks (I don't even need to say which one) so meh.

Lissa's a low Light (she's only slightly better than Maribelle, who's terrible herself), though Virion would be neat in Light/Middle - see how well that high 3HKO carries him. Henry, even with the egregious speed, feels very solidly Middle. All the other FEAers are cool ideas, though.

EDIT: Also, not all that sure why you don't see Vampire as interesting, since that's a dense as hell game with tons of variants (the parasitic healing/buffing, the shaky status game, elemental and physical reliance, all that jazz). A lot more nuanced than, say, the mage OHKOers, who are mostly "do I get a turn or not" => "do I kill with a single Brave-blitz". Even DK has that question, but it gains some shades of thought due to the numbers game at play.

would personally like to see some thematic matchups based on the job-heavy set of characters you're looking at...

so I'd like to see like... Ominas vs. Lulu (FFX) in one of the matches at least.

Tiki vs. some Pokemon Dragon-type in Heavy/Middle also works :)

Holly is surely too good for L/M, yeah.

Snowfire's list for BD looks pretty good, except that I would like to see Vampire. (I get why one wouldn't - blah to the class in-game - but it's one of the trickiest to figure out how good it actually is.) I also don't think No-special-shop Salve-Maker is close to Heavy, but it doesn't matter since it's a terrible choice for PG anyway.

Yeah, I considered actually *three* levels originally of "interested, please put in PG", "SnowFire don't care but okay whatever", and "actively unfun in the DL."  Vampire (and Ninja) are interesting, sure, I Snowfire am just not personally enthused about 'em, so they'd be more middle level "put in or skip if you want lalala" if I'd done that further layer of separation.  And since there's obviously an appetite for it, well, more power to Vampire!

No-Norende Salve Maker I suspect is squarely in the middle of Middle so he can go to L/M and thrash it or go to M/H and get thrashed.  I'd lean slightly toward the higher end of Middle but he's one of the characters whose viability deeply depends on if Default damage reduction is allowed in full, nerfed, or disallowed.

Jo'ou: I entirely agree Lissa is crappy, so sure, if Super does a Puny/Light contest, she'd fit in there too (if be rather good).  However PG isn't really about "winning" to me, it's about an excuse to throw a bunch of matches at a character, and Puny/Light isn't very commonly done in PG, so I mentioned her for Light/Middle.  Lissa will get stomped on in L/M but it'd be fun anyway.

Lissa couldn't do any worse than PAULA! Though I'm honestly thinking a Puny/Light bonus field would be a hilarious idea. Punies against other Punies actually make interesting matches.

Who I'd want to see in a Bravely Default Proving Grounds?

High Godlike: Braev, Alternis, Qada, Penultimate, Ultimate, Artemia, Kamizumi

Heavy/Godlike:
Knight (How far can the defense/burst damage go in a mage-heavy division set?)
Vampire: Can it contend in Godlike?
Dark Knight: Interested to see how this behaves in practice.
Profiteur: Interested in seeing how much respect he has.

Middle/Heavy:
Thief: Kinda interested in seeing where the respect, if any, lies.
Ninja: Utsumemi respect check?
Mephilia: Respect check.

Light/Middle:
Red Mage: Interesting game!
Diva of the Battlefield, Praline a la Mode: Respect check.
The Jackal: Respect check.
Conjurer: Evade game check.

Middle/Heavy:
Mephilia: Respect check.

Statistically seems like she would be 1 border down (even without Brave burst credit, she's still not overly durable. With that factored in, her HP gets downright atrocious for a slow 2HKOer- who doesn't score OHKOs much- who relies on an a single element on top of that).

The whole her summon being fixed thing completely mongs her in the DL as well. No way should she be allowed to spam that.

For what it's worth I'd definitely see her as Heavy. I see her durability as above PC for sure (already isn't taken at the earliest possible time so no extra decredit there), so she's a boss who tends to win turn 2 unless the opponent has both MT and earth resistance.

I guess Pyro chose the right border. <.<
