Books to reccomend
« on: December 22, 2008, 03:08:32 PM »
I want to start getting back into reading. Can you guys reccomend me some good books and series. I'm mostly into fantasy and sci-fi. I was wondering if anyone knew the name of this book. I forget the name of it. Its something Furies or Fluries. Tolkien reccomends the author on the back. You control these animals that are elements like earth, fire, water and so on. At the beginning the main character's father gets gravely injured. There is like a stable boy who seems to be retarded but at the end he ends up being like some hero thought to be dead. Does anyone know what I'm talking about.
I think......I think I want to be forgiven. Mhhm. More than anything.

Noooooo clue on the book you're talking about, and try Brandon Sanderson. Everyone should read Mistborn/Elantris.

Have you ever tried Dan Simmons? His Hyperion novels are good Sci-Fi, and he also writes some horror if you're interested.
Don't think of it as a novel. Think of it as a chance to retroactively win every argument you have ever walked away from.

'stable boy becomes hero' sounds vaguely like 'The Book of Three' by Lloyd Alexander.

Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Am too lazy to toss out my own recommendations right now, but will second this.

Just looking back at my last couple of months of reading, I'd recommend...

Dan Simmons, "Hyperion" and "Illium" (both are the starts of series)

Sussana Clarke, "Jonathan Stange and Mr. Norrell"

Connie Willis, "To Say Nothing of the Dog"

Jim Butcher, the Dresden Files series (starts with "Storm Front" but doesn't lose TOO much if you read them out of order)

Paula Volsky, "The Grand Elipse"

Lois McMaster Bujold, "Young Miles" (compilation of the first two books and first short story in a series)
Read my webnovel, Eye Opener, now available on RoyalRoad.

George Orwell is my favourite. If you haven't already, take a read of 1984 and Animal Farm, they're classics.

If you haven't read it go read Bram Stoker's Dracula. It packs a decent mystery atmosphere and a writing style that you see weirdly little of these days.
