Xenogears- Gear Stats
« on: August 04, 2010, 07:35:43 AM »
Welcome to the other half of the Xenogears cast, the giant mechanical one.  In addition to stat topicry, some basic discussion of Xenogears mechanics will slip in here, mostly because they ACTUALLY CRACKED THEM so I can, in fact, intelligently discuss them.  Stunning I know.

Assumptions-
All stats are taken with a character level of 70.  Why 70?  Well, this is within a few levels of a typical endgame, though probably a tad overlevelled.  However, at level 70 you learn the X Infinity Level attack, ie the last significant thing levels do for gears.  Since levels over 65 are typical, I figure just taking the couple extra for extra Fei hype wouldn't hurt.
All gears are taken with the best equipment available.  This is the OMEGA100 engine, found in Big Joe's shop, the ZAlloy80/30 armor, same, and everyone's best Frames and Weapons, which are spread around various shops.
So, why this gear?  Well, Frames and Weapons are obvious, there's no reason not to use those things.  The armor, which grants 800 base defense and 300 base Ether defense, is the best EDef-boosting armor in the game.  This is important because frankly using pure Defense boosing armor is suicidal in the endgame; not only to all enemies have ether damage, but they prefer it to their other attacks.  Not having that Edef is basically inviting even basic grunts to slam into the damage cap on you.  The engines are, in theory, debatable; they grant 1000 base power, yes, but also lower your fuel to 1000 as well.  However, this is for all DL purposes (and for 5/7 of the cast, in-game purposes) very much worth it; there's no need for thousands of fuel points unless you plan to use Special Options, and by endgame you should no longer need to use Frame HPs.  In the DL, well, suffice to say that Billy and Maria will not miss their damage options either.

On Attack Levels- Gear attacks are divided into 5 types called Attack Levels.  At 0, you can access the basic Triangle (T), Square (S), and X attacks.  These all have universal properties of accuracy and cost across gears, but for readability purposes, those will be addressed for each individual gear.
At level 1, you can access two combos.  These combos correspond to the first two deathblows on a characters list, and in a gear are accessed by first using a T attack, followed by the combo (either a T or S, although the difference is that the S costs 10 more fuel but is stronger.  Accuracy is identical across combos.)  Level 1 is accessed by using any of T, S, or X at level 0.  The attack doesn't have to hit anything, just be used.  On the following turn, attack level will be 1.
Similarly, attacking with T, S, or X at level 1 (and not using a combo if you use T) will give you level 2 at the next turn (and corresponding combos preceded by S), and attacking without combos at level 2 will then proceed to level 3 (and X-preceded combos.)  Unsurprisingly, at these higher levels you can also still use lower level attacks, which will subtract from your current level (ie, using a level 1 combo at level 2 reduces you to level 1, using a level 1 combo at level 3 reduces you to level 2, etc)
Once you've achieved level 3, attacking without using any combo again has a chance to activate Infinity Mode.  In Infinity Mode, T, S, and X are instead replaced by special, high level attacks.  Unlike other attack levels, which last until you use them up, Infinity Mode lasts three turns, after which you fall to level 0.
Chu-Chu is an exception and does not gain attack levels.

Other Notes- All gears, sans Chu-Chu, have access to two command skills; Charge and Booster.  Charge replaces the Defend command and, in addition to working identically to it, has the additional function of restoring fuel.  The amount restored is based on attack levels;  30 at level 0, 50 at 1, 70 at 2, 90 at 3, and 300 while in Infinity Mode.  Booster meanwhile is a special command which grants the Haste status.  While the status itself is identical to standard Haste in Xenogears, Booster-induced Haste does not have a turn duration, but goes on indefinitly.  However, it also costs fuel, at a rate of 2% deducted at the end of each turn, including the one it is activated.
As these are a) universal across gears and b) of debatable DL legality, they will be listed up here and not referenced again in this post.
Xenogears has a damage cap of 9999 per hit.  However, attacks which are multiple hits can circumvent this, and the displayed damage will reflect this in game.
Finally, all gears have alternate versions of their Level 0 attacks, which are used instead of the standard ones when fighting human-sized enemies.  Said human-sized enemies cannot be the subject of gear deathblows, so it balances out in-game... well, it would if they had thousands of HP instead of hundreds on average.  These will be listed for folks that consider gears as on a different scale.

And so, stat notes.

HP- Reflects ability to live.  This is upgraded solely through Frame-typed equipment, individual to each gear.  As such, we don't really care what they're called, just what they do.
EP- Used to fuel spell which (fail to) make the peoples fall downs.  The first stat derived from the character stats.
Fuel- Basic resource used by non-Ether Machine attacks.  Based solely on the Engine used by the gear.
Power- Attack power.  Based on the engine used by the gear.  Unlike fuel, each gear has a modifier applied to it's engine power, with a base of 10.  Power gears instead use a base of 12, while weapon-wielding gears have a lower base (9 for Andvari and Fenrir, 8 for Renmazuo, 7 for Vierge).
Pilot Ether- Base for Ether attacks.  Not actually listed in gear stats in-game, but useful because several characters have accessories that boost their Ether stat, so having it listed here gives me a chance to comment on them without clutting things up with full character stats.
Ether Amp- Multiplier applied to ether score.  The Ether Amp stat's mult is determined by dividing the actual stat by 4 (for some reason).  All gears have a base of 10 Ether Amp, so a minimum mult of 2.5 is applied, although of course you can accessorize to boost this stat.
Defense- Reduces damage taken.  Base stat is from whatever Armor you have equipped, although accessories can boost the stat.  Given the base of 800 we're using, though, even the biggest boost from semi-legal accessories is pretty small; you can safely assume that HP is the sole indicator of Gear durability.
Ether Defense- Reduces magical damage taken.  Base stat is the pilot's Ether Defense stat plus whatever your armor grants (if anything) plus the effects of accessories.  Given we're starting with a base of 300 from Armor, the casts natural Mdef curve of roughly 30 to 55 is fairly marginalized here.
Pilot Accuracy- Base stat for accuracy.  The gist here is that each attack in the game has a base accuracy, before which character accuracy is taken against enemy evade and any difference applied to the final accuracy check on the RNG.  Or something like that, it was needlessly convoluted.  Also of interest here is that some enemies can't evade; they have some special check against it, usually for reasons of logic (ie too fucking big to evade).  Such enemies instead will block (for drastically reduced damage, rather than the usual half) if they would have evaded.  Anyway, based entirely on character Hit stat.
Pilot Evade- The flip side of all that junk up above.
Response- Well, not ENTIRELY.  REsponse is a bonus applied to character hit.  As well, Response/2 is applied to character evade.  Base response in all gears is 0, however, so only relevant here if you're into starting accessories (and even then, it's just barely enough to mean you don't whiff half the time)
Agility- Speed.  Xenogears has crazy speed mechanics well elaborated upon by Dhyer.  They boil down to "look linear until you star getting above 12 or below 8 speed", and in general have a lot in common with Chrono Trigger mechanics on the matter.  Agility is a set stat, unique to each gear and independant of the corresponding pilots Agility score.  However, each gear also has a hidden stat called capacity, which in conjunction with hidden weight scores on accessories, determines how many they can equip.  If you exceed  capacity, you lose a point of agility, and every 240 weight (this is what most Extra Armors weight, for example) after is another point.

Finally, physical damage is calculated with an enemy defense score of 400.  This value belongs to the Wind Seraph, who's the middle ground of endgame enemy defense values from what I could tell.  I wanted to do direct, non-calculated test, but realized no enemy had the HP to test high end attacks.  The Wind Seraph is used again for Ether damage, this time because it's the only one in the testing area (world map just outside Deus, incidentally) which took damage from some people's ether attacks.  In this case, the Edef value is 0... which is actually common throughout the game, so I don't feel too bad about this.

Initial Accessories
Lite Armor+1 (+15 Defense , +5 Response)
B Circuit (Reduces Agility loss in Snowy terrain.  Woohoo)
Frame HP 50 (Allows access to a 50% version of the Restore Frame Special Option)

Special Property- Renmazuo's attack power functions differently than is listed in the in-game menu.  Like all weapon users, he has a lower multiplier attatched to his Engine's power, after which his weapon power is added.  Unlike other weapon users, because he has in effect two weapons, each is given a power bonus of 5/3, but is added separately to his Engine power when performing T or X attacks.  This is reflected in his stat listings, to help explain why his numbers look weird.
Additionallly, his S attack is a pure blooded non-typed Ether move, affected by his Ether score, Ether Amp, and the Ether Doubler accessory.  Not that he has any of those things DL-legally.
Billy's T and X attacks each consume either Godson or Gattling ammo, at a rate of 1 per attack.  Deathblows consume one of each.  As a fully loaded gun has 100 bullets, this doesn't matter in all but the most ludicrous, Magic-Immune-Jogurt-inspired matches.
Extra Special Note- Billy may benefit from using the X70-8000 engine instead.  This engine has 8000 Fuel, allowing him reasonable use of his Jessie Cannon/Blasta special options. If he does this, he doesn't give a hoot about his physical damage, so I'm going to be lazy and not list its damage.

Special Options-
Restore Frame- Heals 12,400 HP.  Costs 2730 Fuel.
Jessie Cannon- 2061 Light-typed Ether damage to a single target. (500 Fuel)
Jessie Blasta- Deals 3435 Light-typed Ether damage to a single target. (1000 Fuel)

Magic Guard (Protects Eth Mach (ie blocks Silence))
Pilot Shield (Prevents Pilot Confusion)
Ether StoneLg (+5 Ether, Character initial item)
MermaidRing (+10 Ether/Ether Defense, Character unique item)

Special Note- Crescens will weigh itself down if it equips all these accessories.  However, it can use the Power Magic alone at no penalty.
Emeralda's adulthood bonuses to Attack and Ether also apply to Crescens.  The italicised value indicate her real scores in these areas, and the parenthetical number represents real Ether score after equips.
Checking damage values indicates that Emeralda's Ether bonus, at least in Crescens, is not 20% but 50% of the base value.  I don't get it either, but it definitely maths out that way.

Ether Machine-
Anemo Darm, Terra Feist, Thermo Gord, Aqua Aroum- 2808 Wind/Earth/Fire/Water elemental Ether damage.  Single Target.  (3 EP)
Anemo Omega, Terra Holz, Thermo Geist, Aqua Dhaum- 2808 Wind/Earth/Fire/Water Ether damage.  Multi-target (6 EP)

Response- 0
Agility- 7

Initial Accessories
Chu-Chu Idol- (Grants a 20% bonus to Chu-Chu's base Attack, Defense, Ether, and Ether Defense.  This bonus does not apply to healing spells, and thus has not been added to her Ether score here.  The other, italicized numbers are real stats after this bonus however.  Character unique item)

Special Notes- Chu-Chu's healing in giant form is exactly ten times as powerful as normal.  This means that either her Ether Amp stat is glitched and is not divided by 4 during the power calculations, or her Ether score, like the rest of her stats, is multiplied when Grown.  Either gives the same result, so I've chosen to render this as a 4x ether mult, rendered in italics.
Chu-Chu has two other unique accessories, the Bart and Fei jr. dolls.  These apparently amplify her rate and power of criticals, but since I don't have either to test with, and it's Chu-Chu, I've chosen not to list them at this time.
Chu-Chu has a Power Crisis effect in play, powering her up when allies are in critical.  This is why I thought she had double attack power earlier.  Hate.
Chu-Chu can only use Level 0 attacks.

Spells-
Forest Dance- 1750 Healing (2 EP)

Re: Xenogears- Gear Stats
« Reply #3 on: August 04, 2010, 07:39:04 AM »
Elly Scaling!  Straightforward enough.  This was done in Anima 2, because it's the only gear dungeon on disc 2 aside from Deus, which Elly isn't present for.  Sadly, this means the enemies are what they are, and what they are is low defense.  Oh well.  Otherwise, see earlier notes on armor and frames.  Engines this time are more standard Xenogears fare, with one sporting lower power but improved fuel, and one being meant for extra oomph at the expense of resources.  Every stat here uses the high power engine, which is 55 base power and 5800 fuel.  The alternative has 50 base power and 6600 fuel, the usefulness of which will be pointed out momentarily.
Levels are taken at 60.  This is arguably a little low for this point in the game, but there's really no important skills learned anywhere between 60 and 70 (62 or 63 being more normal for Anima 2), and one or two points of Ether aren't going to make a difference really.  Because of this, the final Infinity level attack will not be listed for Weltall-2 (although it will be for Elly, for completeness).
In addition to Elly, this post will also have full notes on Weltall-2, because honestly Weltall-2 is a gamebreaker and people remember it, so why not.  The rest of the cast, however, will have their stats followed by the three turn average.

Testing Subject: Tusk-Tusk.  50 Defense, 0 Edef

Re: Xenogears- Gear Stats
« Reply #4 on: August 04, 2010, 07:39:16 AM »
Commentary will make comments comparing the gears to their characters just to give me more to talk about.  Pay it no mind~

Xenogears- Uh, yeah.  Really look at the averages.  Xenogears' in-game dominance is reliant on the player missing the upgrades I got, or trying to get physical with Deus without accuracy twinking, at which point the Infinity mode mechanic is awesomeness.  As a DL entity, somewhat more durable and speedy than average, with a 3HKO.  Middle, and never ever Fei's preferred form.

Andvari- Now, if GWhips were as good on the status as Whips, Andvari would basically be a remix on Bart, trading some evade hax and speed for a stronger tool against attack mages that also nails healers.  They aren't.  So instead, Bart gives up Blue Cologne and the Ether busting with nothing to show for it.  Still, Wild Smile is enough to keep him out of Light, but a rather shoddy Middle.

Fenrir- Strip Citan of his skillset.  Give him his pre-sword damage.  Knock his speed and HP down a peg.  Um, yeah.  Lackluster Middle, and a huge step down from the Doc's usual powers.

Steir- On the surface, Steir looks nearly identical to Rico.  Same speed, great HP, solid 3HKO.  The difference, then, is that Steir has more accuracy woes in exchange for EDef.  I don't think it's really a winning trade.  Good Light, shoddy Middle, I dunno really.

Renmazuo- Hey, wait, someone actually significantly different.  Billy flips his position on the speed scale, which he likes.  And suddenly his Ether damage, while nothing spectacular, is a viable way to kill someone.  He doesn't really lose durability or anything... but he does lose the whole Haste/Healer game.  Unless the post-accuracy averages do insane things, a very bland Middle.

Seibzehn- Funny enough, Seibzehn resembles Maria.  As seen through a mirror.  A physical powerhouse to Maria's magedom, the difference being Seibzehn can rocket punch people all day, while Maria struggles to use her 3HKO spell twice.  And of course, 25% ABOVE average HP rather than below.  And a bit faster, never hurts.  All that said, Seibzehn is going to be nailed to the wall when I figure out accuracy, so probably still a Light.  Just a good one that can win things.

Crescens- 13 speed, solid 3HKO, green hair... so yeah, not much different.  Except, of course, Emmy has a major durability loss (75% HP).  Does she gain?  Well, situationally.  Her magic damage just misses the 3HKO, so anyone with bad Mdef is hurting (well, sorta). Still not as good overall, and a Middle, but not without its merits.

Chu-Chu- A losing trade, and that's not something I'd have thought possible.  Puny puny puny.

Vierge- Well, I didn't expect the enemy defense to be so much lower here!  So... yeah, Aerods kinda sucks, and without that Vierge just isn't very good.  The speed gives her something to work with at least, and probably a Middle of some flavor?  Eh.

Weltall-2- See, Weltall-2 really looks cool!  Usable backup damage, no real statistical weaknesses, and System Id is 3 turns of overkill damage.  After which he can use it again repeatedly.  Still, one turn wind-up is a definitely limitation.  Probably the only member of this case I'd really call a Heavy, but a great one.

Awesome.

I wasn't able to afford Joe equips, though this was probably due to my own ignorance and mismanagement. Still, to satisfy my curiosity, any general ideas on what things look like without them?

Well, to give you an idea, we'll crunch out Xenogears' average with the best engine from the Snowfield Hideout (this would be the high-fuel one Renmazuo probably wants)

Xenogears 3 Turn- X, X, Ryuten (2160, 2160, 6264), 3528 Average

So a pretty noticeable difference, but doesn't really change that much for the cast overall (Billy becomes a pure mage, and Emeralda's spells are now just a little worse over time rather than a clear drop)

Accuracy!

Since this will involve some tweaking of the entire topic, we'll discuss the basics of accuracy in its own post.

Despite how the game phrases accuracy mechanics, Xenogears actually uses evade as the greater stat, and accuracy is a penalty to it.  That is to say, this is the basic equation for accuracy:
HitChance= AttackerHit - EnemyEva + BaseHit
Hit%= 100+HitChance (for Characters)
OR
Hit%=95+HitChance (for Gears)

Where BaseHit is an accuracy bonus inherent to each type of attack (70 for T and Deathblows, 10 for S, 0 for X, and 90 for 7 point/Infinity Deathblows).

At this stage, if you've played the game, you realize that X attacks never hit because Xenogears enemies have huge evade scores.  Sadly there's no comprehensive beastiary to draw on, so I had to pick a test subject and actually record some hit numbers.  I ran for 30 test, and got about 75 evade for the Water Seraph, which while probably the lower end of enemies for evasiveness is also the most common score, based on memory.

Anyway, we'll be using this 75 evade as our base.  From this we get...

Xenogears- 51% Base Hit
Andvari- 50% Base Hit
Fenrir- 56% Base Hit (note to self, add Citan's initial accessories)
