Introduction

Well why the hell not?  Who else was going to do this?  Meeple?  Tide?  Trance?  Hell no!

Those of you familiar with the game probably know of it from the Speed Demos Archive run done several months ago.  That's available on ustream if you're interested in watching it and want to experience things over 18 hours with lots of audio commentary...but I'm not in to that.  I'm an old school Let's Play person, damnit, and back in MY day, we didn't HAVE video recordings.  This will be done with SCREENSHOTS, postings of new MUSIC TRACKS when we run into them, and maybe a few postings of video footage to show off the battle system and/or cutscenes.

So what is The Demon Rush (TDR) for the uninitiated?  TDR is an independent PC RPG developed by Dragoon Entertainment (http://www.dragoon.ca/index.html) back in 2008 by a member of the SomethingAwful Forums.  He created the entire game by himself for bout $5000 (about half of which was purchasing a professional music program to compose the soundtrack).  It was initially released for $20, but, as of 2010, is available for free on the website previously linked.  Googling "The Demon Rush" will get you a lot of results, so I'll summarize them here:

The Internet (and by extension, universe) Hates the Game

Most places consider it to be one of the worst games ever made (worse than E.T.!) for many reasons: computer instability, a completely inane storyline, awful spelling and grammatical errors (and writing in general), a flawed battle system, multiple glitches, and other reasons. For those of you interested in a bit more depth for the introduction, Oh Internet has a review/summary of the game here (http://ohinternet.com/The_Demon_Rush).  A mock Trailer for the game is also available here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhWmboM0zFc&fmt=18).

The creator (TheD) describes the game as such:

"The story revolves around a war between humans and demons, called the Demon Rush, that has spanned three years up to the present time. The city of Tiriad on Earth may have a breakthrough that can lead to the end of the war: the first spacecraft created in the Mittu system, the S. S. Pursuit. With this spacecraft, a new power may be found in Mittu that can lead to the end of the Demon Rush. However, the mission goes awry, and two Tiriadian soldiers are stranded on a distant planet.

The game plays very similar to most story-driven RPGs. You control a party that explores a variety of environments, including towns, outdoor settings, caves, buildings, etc. Certain events will also play out to advance the story. The game's flow is meant to be smooth, and pointless filler is something that is kept at a minimum; a lot of the fights, dungeons and story should advance at a solid pace.

Dungeons are a little different than most RPGs. Rather it being based around exploring and random battles, there is more of a focus of trying to deal with patrolling enemies and trying to get the drop on them. All enemies are visible, some patrol, some guard a certain spot. They can detect you by sight or by sound (if a character is running, not walking, nearby them). Having an enemy sneak up on you can be costly, so learning how to ambush your foes is a crucial skill to learn in this game.

Battles allow you to make use of the entire battlefield, which is good, as spacing is crucial to avoid area-of-effect attacks and keep weaker allies away from foes (as enemies will take distance, HP and defense into account when choosing targets). Fights are turn-based, though other characters can move around the field as the Speed Counters rise (when a Speed Counter is full, that character gets their turn). The game has a good emphasis on strategy, and there a number of subtleties to pay attention to to help turn fights more in your favour. Despite this, the game's difficulty is fairly low, to appeal more to casual players.

To those who seek something more to test them, there are difficult Challenges one can have their team undertake from the Main Menu. Aside from that, there is also a Versus mode in the full version that allows two players to fight their teams against each other.

Your team members are fairly customizable. Characters receive stat bonuses for receiving a certain amount of experience. These stat bonuses are used to increase character stats, and the frequency they get a type of stat bonuses varies from member to member. Stat bonuses can be used immediately or saved for later to be converted into bonuses for different stats. Each character can also hold up to 30 items each and can learn up to 10 specific abilities."

My Thoughts

I applaud the creator.  Seriously.  This is what every nerd dreams of doing - making their own game, putting there own ideas down and getting people to experience their masterpiece.  They add what they want to see, correct "problems" they see with many RPGs, mimic what they think works best, mix things together, and get the ideal game.  He actually went out and did it.

The game isn't perfect by any means - see above for a list of issues - but no game is perfect, and with the resources and skills he had, it's not awful.  Charging $20 initially was probably a bit steep, but you actually get a complete game.  It's probably about 10-20 hours, whereas other free games like Final Vision are about 2 at most.  It has an original-ish design, and while it's got a lot of weak points, the developer clearly knew what he wanted to make.  There are a lot of good things there that just needed maybe another person to help them mature - the battle system has a good base, the character progression makes specialization of characters easy, and he really did put a full game together in terms of story (even if it really needed another person proofing it).  The art, while pretty weak (as some people have described the game as "The MS Paint RPG"), is at least thought out and somewhat varied - different character portraits, cutscenes, backgrounds.  The music, while of horrible quality, at least has some variety to it.  All-in-all, I enjoyed playing the game, and while it is objectively not a 10/10 (or even a 5/10) game, there's still parts of it to enjoy that I feel make it playable.

How This LP Will Run

This will be heavily informative and texty.  I will add pictures to show off new enemies, boss, plot scenes, etc.  I won't put a picture of every line of text, but instead show a few key pictures and provide the text summary to you (if the summary makes sense).  I actually am working on developing a FAQ and probably stat topic for this as I go through, so doing this helps me a lot too!

I will post music as we come to it so everyone can experience it themselves.

I will probably be updating...well, at least once a week.  The game isn't long, so this won't take a long time to complete.  Most updates will be pretty short.  I'll put a summary at the end of each update, so you can easily catch up with the excellent story.

There are lots of things for you guys to get involved with!  Naming characters is a big one, and choosing what order I do sidequests in or if I even get optional characters is also par for the course.  You guys can even choose my party when applicable!  Just post in the topic when I put a vote up, and the winner...well...wins!  For whatever that is worth.

And with that, let's start...

...ok, maybe not that much to start.  Since the game requires a few namings immediately, I need to sequence break slightly early to make sure we don't have a bunch of super short, 1 line updates.  So...super short first update go!

Music: Main Menu (http://tindeck.com/listen/lfoz)

Welcome to the Title Screen, with accompanying music. There are several options here, though the only one we can use right now is the NEW GAME option.  Or QUIT, I suppose.  Challenges I will showcase later, but we need to actually have a saved game first.  Notice in the upper right corner you're given the controls of the game.  These are not negotiable in any way.  You have the generic movement keys, cancel/menu, confirm/talk/action, run/other, and the ability to toggle the use of system resources from high (window) to outrageous (fullscreen).

And here's where we name our save game!  Eight characters max, feel free to suggest names!  This would be a nice touch to help in identifying different saves at different locations, except that you can't change the name unless you start a new game entirely, so it's...of vague usefulness >_>

This is the first character we get to name, and technically the main character.  Her default name is Cherry.  She's apparently headstrong and sad about her family having died, which will be relevant to her character development for the first 10 minutes of the game.

And here's our second character, the foil to Cherry.  His default name is Alberto, so it'll take some work to think of a more embarassing name than that.  Also, that last half of his description is made of win.  Be on the look-out for this guy's dialogue as time goes on - it's pretty hilarious(ly awful).

And thus you have your mission - name our save file, Cherry, and Alberto!  Forward!  The faster you do this, the faster we can get to everything else!

Nope, that's it.  Naming your characters is the entire game.  Great LP, would read again. *thumbs up*

Man this took longer than I thought it would :(

Welcome, everyone, to update number one!  Here, we will explore the introduction to the game, with loads, and loads, of text!

Chapter One: The Demon Rush Drinking Game!

Something I forgot to show you last time: the credits!  As you can see, the game was the result of one person, working alone, tirelessly, throughout the night!  And a few beta testers.  I have no idea what they actually accomplished, but damn I would love to see their feedback.

Now you all know who to blame for me making this LP :)

Our save name.  I <3 Djinni-poo!

They shared their individual technologies with one another, and each world became more prosperous.

The Legend Viper of Thunder, ruler of Earth, shared his knowledge of machinery and physical sciences.

The Legend Viper of Fire brought forth his research on the mind, from his home world of Thormia.

The Legend Viper of Time, who created the gates, shared Necromancy from the star of Rasalhauge.

Disaster struck.  In the year 1916, demons of unknown origin attacked Earth and destroyed the star of Rasalhauge, with the Legend Viper of Time presumed dead.

This war with the demons was called the Demon Rush.  Everyone saw it as the end of Mittu.

As soon as you hit the 'New Game' option, you're presented with a white text-on-black background scroll.  The stuff in bold is the rest of the text scroll.  Since it's just white on black text with no pretty pictures, I decided to spare those of you with poor internet a few KB of graphics.

You're welcome.

Oooookay, story!  At the very beginning, we get the background - 3 human/dragon hybrids rule 3 planets, of which Earth is one.  These 'Legend Vipers' represent Thunder, Fire, and Time, each with different specialties (technology, the mind, and necromancy).  Then, in the middle of the Battle of Verdun, a bunch of demons attacked Earth and also apparently killed off the Legend Viper of Time (who is a bit mis-named - seriously, the Legend Viper of Time didn't see that coming?).  The enveloping war is called The Demon Rush, and apparently it will destroy Mittu (the star system where these 3 planets are).

Obviously, this is an alternate reality Earth.  I'd expect a half-dragon with the power of thunder would have made World War I quite a bit more interesting had this been real...

Hey, people talking.  And I wonder who that guy is!  He has a portrait, so he must be important!

Yes, laugh at the graphics a bit - these facial features are...entertaining, to say the least.  Stay tuned to this guy's - they get better.

...

....

.....

Ok, you can see why this was called the MSPaint RPG.  It looks like MS Paint graphics.  The thing on the left is a demon, who apparently is invading the city of Bobaeda.  The graphics do fall a bit short of what you'd expect, though they do have a certain charm to them, like watching a drunk fat man fall down the stairs.

...

Bobaeda.  Wow, we're already off to a good start.  That name is...special.

I will defend certain aspects of this game.  I will not defend the inane and completely retarded names used here.  It will get worse, I assure you.

And...another character with a portrait.  Also, first mis-spelling of the game.  We should probably keep count!

Missing from this picture because I'm too slow: our red-headed swordmistress slashing the demon.  You can even see the blood!  Totally hardcore man!

That thing to the left is coming from the blond-haired guy we just saw from off-screen.

Music: Sad Town (http://tindeck.com/listen/qpxw)

Dead demon.  Somehow, that little bolt cut its head off.  Since there's a lot of text here, I'll be using character sprites when possible to show who is speaking.

Also missed: as in the 5th picture above (the middle of that set of 3), there's white text indicating that this is Captain Mundosold.

Also...it's time to name our characters!  Who are our intrepid heroes?

Our red-headed sword-girl with family problems is named Elfboy!

And our sarcastic science-geek is (surprise, surprise) named Ciato.

You should both be so proud.

Notice how the game already corrected the original name of Cherry to Elfboy.  It fills in all instances with the new name.  Last and middle names aren't touched by this, so our heroes are now named Elfboy Venus and Ciato Mundosold.

Somehow, this is an improvement.

I'm also so impressed at how fitting these names are - Ciato the loud, foul-mouthed science geek. Elfboy the girl.

Whatever.  I got the last demon and no one in town was hurt as a result.

Yeah, and you coulda gotten your ass killed.  We're not wearing any heavy armor here or nothing'.

The preceeding text was not modified in any way whatsoever.  Yes, that is what Ciato said.  Yes, it will be like that and better throughout the game.  Rejoice!

Perry is some random guy.  I'm pretty sure we never see him after the first 5-10 minutes of the game.

...

....

.....

EVIF BALM?  Where the hell do these names COME FROM!?

One of the demon strayed off, sir.  I had to dispatch it before any innocents were hurt.

Strayed off like you did?

...I think this is a supposed to be a dragon.  I think that's his tail, or maybe his penis.  I can't tell which.  God I hope that's not his penis.

Also, POUND?  A) the thing's about as thin as a pencil, and B) it brings back memories of the bloody Pound Puppies.  And Pound Purries.  And the awful cartoon show that sprung from it.

...I wonder if there's a Pound Plushie somewhere I can pick up.  If not, I have an excellent idea for a line of The Demon Rush toys.

A shame, indeed.  My apologies, Colonel Falsch, but with Elfboy's squad assigned to the Deep Space Operation, we haven't any soldiers to spare.

Perry, who isn't cool enough to have a unique sprite: It does seem strange that Tiriad is hardly attacked by demons, while Bobaeda gets such large numbers of them.

It is odd.  Now then, I should let you get back to Tiriad so you can prepare for your Deep Space Operation.  Ciato, are you ready?

Going somewhere?  It's past your bedtime and we've got the Deep Space Operation tomorrow.

Pound's escorting me to Monarge to visit Amy, and then he's going to take me to Tiriad, so I'll see you there, bright and early.

We should also go.  Our train back to Tiriad is leaving soon.  Colonel Venus.  Private Perry.  Let's go.

Hey, we're in control now!  Wheeeee!  That thing glowing to the right is a save point.  Go up to it, and...

It's saved!  And yes, I've spent an hour, 11 minutes, and 53 seconds taking pictures for the game - not counting resets to catch the awesome animations.  I have a feeling this is going to take up all of my Starcraft 2 time.

To move on here, we need to investigate one of the doors on the train.  Prepare for a massive text dump.

His girlfriend, Amy, is dead.

One Scene Wonder Perry: Oh...

Monarge got hit pretty bad by the Demon Rush.  They were completely annihilated the day it started.  She was attending the university there for engineering.  Ciato and I took it pretty hard.  She was my best friend.

Ciato sure did take it hard.  He volunteered to be Professor Ridge's guinea pig for the Light Chips.

Perry the Clueless Boy Wonder: What are the Light Chips?

An invention of Professor Ridge's.  They draw on the host's energy to create intense light.  Remember those beams of light Ciato was firing at those demons in Bobaeda?  In layman's terms, he can create those at will.

Perry Our Excuse for an Info Dump: Wow...hey, isn't Pound an inventor too?  He had some kind of chip on his neck, too.

I have no idea what that chip on his neck is supposed to be.  He wouldn't tell me.  His guantlets, though, have a bunch of siphonic and mechanical technologies in them.

Too Dumb to Live Perry: Siphonic?

I just had to put this picture here for the eye roll.  Another awesome facial portrait coming soon!

Private Perry Whom I'm Running Out of Names for: Oh.  Pound must have a lot fo time on his hands to be an inventor and a part of the Bobaedan army.

The Bobaedan Army has been renamed to Tratas a few years ago, just as the Tiriadian Army was renamed to the Sky Corps a couple decades ago, due to its prominence with breakthroughs in aerial inventions and combat.

Screw Perry: Oh.  What's Tratas mean?

More awesome facial artwork goooooo!

But Pound doesn't have much time to work on scientific projects nowadays.  He's become one of the heads of Tratas after his father died.

GOD STOP TALKING PERRY: His father was a general for Tratas?

Not just a general.  Rumors had it that he was also a Legend Viper.

Damnit, where's my Vicodin...: Legend Vipers are half human, half dragon, right?  I can't imagine what that would look like.

Very few people have seen a Legend Viper but they can supposedly take on the form of a human or a Viper.

Vipers being dragon folk who live in mountainous areas.

They seem to prefer human form, from what I have heard.  The Legend Viper of Thunder has blessed all of Earth with such advanced technology.  The Legend Vipers truly are benevolent.

Oh thank god.  Transcribing text makes the arthritis flare :(  Anyway, after that last bit of text the screen fades to this scene at night in what looks like a town.

Yes, sir.

You won't have to call me 'sir' much longer.  I hear you're going to be promoted to Brigadier General soon.  Who would have thought that a punk kid like you could make their way up the ranks of the Sky Corps so fast?

MY GOD EVIL EYES.  CLEARLY ELFOBY IS THE VILLAIN OF THIS GAME.

Ha ha!  Ciato is also putting in a lot of late hours.  It wouldn't surprise me if he got promoted, too.

He's been working a lot to stop from thinking about Amy.  He's been assigned to the Kent Buckle case.

Kent Buckle...I can't believe such a respected general of the Sky Corps would kill his own daughter.

Rank has nothing to do with sanity.

They gave you the Deep Space Operation to see if you can handle a mission of that magnitude.  That's why they're holding back your promotion to Brigadier General.  Being hospitalized the day before the Demon Rush started due to recklessness doesn't look good either.

ICE BURN

Elfboy, your comeback?

...awesome.

Gonna go cry, little baby?  Gonna cry?  Let the tears flow!  Awwwwww

Man, this guy cannot draw breasts.  It also looks like little Elfboy on the left is bleeding from the mouth.

So, left picture: Elfboy's mother, father, and a young version of her (no age given, probably around 8 or so?).  Right picture: Ciato, Elfboy, and Amy.  Amy looks so young - I bet she's barely 18 there.  I'm also impressed that Ciato is still wearing that awful shirt even in that picture - at least Elfboy has the fashion sense to switch clothing.

(If you weren't in that car accident, I know I wouldn't be so reckless.  And now Amy's gone, too.  It's not just Ciato who's escaping into his work...)

The next day...

I promise I'll make you proud.  Goodbye.

And we have control again!  In typical OCD RPG fashion, we must now investigate all the tombstones.  From left to right, top row first:

Ok, now to move around town.  This is a big town, but part of it are blocked off right now.  Time to explore!

One screen to the right:

4 houses on this screen, from left to right:

Mr. Mundosold: Damn kids, barging into my house at all hours.

Mrs. Mundosold: Ignore him, Elfboy, Alphonse is very happy to see you.

Mr. Mundosold: Watch over Ciato, and make sure that boy stays out of trouble.

Yes sir!

Mr. Mundosold: Can it, woman!

Mrs. Mundosold: Don't take that tone at me, mister!

The Demon Rush - teaching family values since 2008.

Also, all doors in houses are like this - just the creator being too lazy to add some more fantastic interior design to the game.

North is block, so we have to head east.  Interestingly, the game forces you to follow the roads - if you try to exit on the grass, you'll hit an invisible wall and have to move back to the road.

More lazy programming, or traffic education for our children of the future?

Oh, ok, some explanation for the blockade earlier!  I'm sure every other oddity in the game will be expertly explained by some NPC.

Many buildings in towns are named to make them stand out a bit more.  Granted, since the signs are awfully designed (check that color scheme on the pub sign - it's a pain to read), and the buildings all look the same, it's usually safer to just run into them and guess later.

Let's check the 'mall' first.

Because you have a job to do?

Worst.  Mall.  Ever.

The barkeeps in all towns say the same damn thing.  However, that red thing looks promising...

The Tiriad Times, Page 1
DEEP SPACE OPERATION
"Today, the Sky Corps is about to launch the S.S. Pursuit into Mittu.  General Carson Noble stated that this operation, headed by the Legend Viper of Thunder, is to see if there is anything in Mittu to aid us in the Demon Rush.

The Tiriad Times, Page 2
DEMON ATTACKS INCREASE IN BOBAEDA
Demon attacks in Bobaeda have reached an all-time high.  Harbour's location makes it inaccessible to most demons.  Tiriad has always had low demons amounts.  Pael gets a good number of demons as well.

Yay more mispellings and grammar problems!  A little news about the outside world, apparently Bobaeda and Pael get attacked often, while other towns are pretty safe.  And we get a bit more informaton about thie DEEP SPACE OPERATION.  Let's move on.

To the right...well, leads to nothing.  This is Elfboy's apartment, but we literally do nothing there (she won't let us enter anyone else's apartment, and we can't even go to the bathroom to look at what she's got in there!).  We can't even go to the right to leave town!  Going up...

We can't cross traffic!  Despite the fact Earth of 1919 has SPACESHIPS, they still haven't invented traffic laws or walk signals.  Dur...

Back to the far left it is!

Hotel.  Usually we can rest here, but all we get told now is that we have to make Tiriad proud with the operation today.

Pressure much?

Random Person 1: The Sky Corps are abandoning us!

Random Person 2: The end is here!  The Deep Space Operations is your way of hiding the fact that you're leaving Earth.

Random Person 3: You can escape from the demons, but you can't escape from Theus!  Damnation to those who abandon their fellow man!

The Deep Space Operation was started so we could find something in the Mittu system to help stop the Demon Rush!

Random Person 4: Hellfire awaits you!  Theus knows where in Mittu you'll be hiding in!

Whatever.  I need to get to work, now.

Music: Tratas HQ (http://tindeck.com/listen/zuqb)

They're annoying, yeah.  They don't see why the Deep Space Operation was created.

I feel like that deserved a screen shot of its own.

But, whatever.  Those particular Theites are cowards, and they're giving other Theites a bad name.  They just roll over and die, and don't bother trying to stand up to these demons, using the end of the world as their excuse for not doing anything.    They say it like Theus WANTS them to give up.  Damn extremists.

'Extremist' says Mr. Science-is-the-way.

Har har.  Better keep the attitude under wraps.  The man upstairs wants to talk to you.  That's why I'm not onboard the Pursuit yet.  Had to pass the message on.

General Noble, eh...?

Sky Corps for its scientific achievements.  We may also find some sort of power out there that can lead to the end of the Demon Rush.  Professor Ridge has given the co-ordinates of our starting search to the Pursuit Pilot already.  Succeed here, and you come back here a hero and a Brigadier General.  Go out and make the Sky Corps proud!

Yes sir!

Well, I was expecting a bit more there.  Pretty straight-forward.

BLAST OFF!!!

Since this update is 53+ large images now, I'm splitting it.  I was originally going to post it up until a different point, but this actually works pretty well for now.  Don't worry - battle system comes in the next post!  I just have Star Ocean 2 vibes right now, and that's never a good way to start a Let's Play!

For all the Zennys out there (hopefully no more than 1...unless those sperm bank donations actually took), I have developed rules for a drinking game that you can play.  Hopefully, this doesn't kill anyone.  Here are the rules for now - we can definitely add more as time goes on:

Take One Drink...
For each mispelled word
For each inappropriately capitalized word
For each extra comma
For each proper noun that looks like it was made by just throwing letters together
For each run-on sentence

Take Two Drinks...
For each APPROPRIATE use of profanity (if it makes sense in context)
Each glitch encountered
Each proper noun that looks BELIEVABLE

Take Three Drinks...
For each GAME-CRASHING glitch

That puts our current drink count to...hospitalization (I count 20 so far).  Maybe this isn't a good idea...

So that's it for this update - next one coming up will have some stuff to vote on, as well as an interlude or two after it to explain combat and look at the characters.

BONUS: Elfboy being badass

tl;dr summary:

Some people liked having sex with dragons and made super man-dragons that everyone loves.  Ciato is a jackass, Elfboy is depressed about her parents, and both are going on a space trip to stop a demon invasion.

The Legend Viper of Time, who created the gates, shared Necromancy from the star of Rasalhauge.

You always have to wonder about the sort of people who think this is a good idea.

EVIF BALM?  Where the hell do these names COME FROM!?

Well it's clearly an anagram of five lamb so clearly when he ran out of porno names and words to stick random letters to he resorted to anagrams of random words.

Leave Hong Kong and return to the great United States of America (and our protectorate, the frozen wastelands of Canadia).

Honestly, I don't know - can everyone else see them?
