Tourney of Interest Season 4 Week 1
« on: June 16, 2008, 12:14:30 AM »
What?

Yes, it's time for the ultimate in insanity, a tourney running while another tourney is running while the world decides to kill me for making these matches.  All the usual rules are in effect, so have fun and remember it closes in a week.

Godlike

Lune Zoldark (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII) - Oh right. Alert cheese against not-healer.  That kind of match in Middle tends to go to the SRW character.

Godlike

Kartikeya (Wild ARMs 5) v Heat (Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga) - Poor Gene Simmons.
Sanger Zonvolt (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Xorn (Grandia III) - It's fucking Xorn.
Mint (Threads of Fate) v Chris Lightfellow (Suikoden III) - Extra sexiness ensues.
Nyarlathotep (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) v Profound Darkness (Phantasy Star IV) - Very close, very good fighters...but Nyarlie's faster, and that clinches it.

Heavy

Clarissa Arwin (Wild ARMs XF) v Melbu Frahma (Legend of Dragoon) - I've seen my roommate use Clarissa for 5 minutes.  She got killed.  Does that count?
Donald Duck (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Crono (Chrono Trigger) - Infinite healing!?
Marona (Phantom Brave) v Ulala Serizawa (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) - Considering I let her summon, this is...yeah.
Kurthnaga (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) v Hiro (Lunar Eternal Blue Complete) - ID, I guess.

Middle

Genesis Rhapsodos (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) v Mog (Final Fantasy VII)
Greg Russellburg (Wild ARMs 5) v Halley Brancket (Shadow Hearts) - Status hype and healing beat out Greg.
Junpei Iori (Persona 3) v Weigraf Folles (Final Fantasy Tactics) - Damn unmemorable bosses!  Regen and critical hype with High Counter for fun, I guess.
Lune Zoldark (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII) - I need to play a SRW in English so I know the character names at some point >_>  Anyway, likes my view on bosses, so...

Light

Sho Minamimoto (The World Ends With You) v Stallion (Suikoden Series)
Goofy (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Jet Enduro (Wild ARMs 3) - ...fails.
Rebecca Streisand (Wild ARMs 5) v Kid (Chrono Cross) - 2x average damage on the beginning game form.  Not Light.
Micaiah (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) v Cyan Garamonde (Final Fantasy VI) - Likes my view on charge times, I guess.

Mint (Threads of Fate) v Chris Lightfellow (Suikoden III) - Silent Lake is my gut reaction here.
Nyarlathotep (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) v Profound Darkness (Phantasy Star IV) - ...Gut. This is incredibly close, as matches go; I want to look PD over to make sure I'm not underestimating this.

Heavy

Marona (Phantom Brave) v Ulala Serizawa (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) - Aahahahahaahhaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Middle

Lune Zoldark (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII) - ...ev... entuall... ...asdf. wow. uhhhhh why is this close WHY. -_-

Kartikeya (Wild ARMs 5) v Heat (Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga): Abstain until I play more DDS2 someday.
Sanger Zonvolt (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Xorn (Grandia III): I think he survives one attack, and thats all he needs to? Wait, counters.... Meh.
Mint (Threads of Fate) v Chris Lightfellow (Suikoden III): She doesn't chant, so she isn't subject to Silent Lake!? I got nothing. Not sure Fire Heart would even OHKO... though it probably would?
Nyarlathotep (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) v Profound Darkness (Phantasy Star IV)

Heavy

Clarissa Arwin (Wild ARMs XF) v Melbu Frahma (Legend of Dragoon): Why do you do this to me? Anyway, too many forms, so Clarissa can't blitz with Sacrifice. WITHOUT THIS STRATEGY SHE IS A LIGHT.
Donald Duck (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Crono (Chrono Trigger)
Marona (Phantom Brave) v Ulala Serizawa (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment)
Kurthnaga (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) v Hiro (Lunar Eternal Blue Complete)

Middle

Genesis Rhapsodos (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) v Mog (Final Fantasy VII)
Greg Russellburg (Wild ARMs 5) v Halley Brancket (Shadow Hearts)
Junpei Iori (Persona 3) v Weigraf Folles (Final Fantasy Tactics)
Lune Zoldark (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII): Meh.

Light

Goofy (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Jet Enduro (Wild ARMs 3): IIRC Goofy's damage was terrible, so this works?
Rebecca Streisand (Wild ARMs 5) v Kid (Chrono Cross)

Godlike

Mint (Threads of Fate) v Chris Lightfellow (Suikoden III) - Silent Lake. The end.

Heavy

Donald Duck (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Crono (Chrono Trigger) - Donald halves Lightning damage and Aero makes Crono's damage -really- fail. When Crono is borderline 4HKOing Donald -before- Second Chance, you know he's screwed. After that, it's just a typical Donald win.

Middle

Lune Zoldark (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII) - OG2 Lune 2HKOs with Valor+Strike'd Cross Smasher and gets to even squeeze an Alert there. The limit isn't a threat and Seifer OHKOing things with his base physical is "lolwut".

Light

Goofy (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Jet Enduro (Wild ARMs 3) - Goofy is horrible.

Kartikeya (Wild ARMs 5) v Heat (Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga): Karti's not really fast enough to properly mess with Heat. And he'll never get off his super move without tentacles in the way.
Sanger Zonvolt (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Xorn (Grandia III): Death Knell.

Heavy

Kurthnaga (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) v Hiro (Lunar Eternal Blue Complete): Goes first, Concussion Sword. Also possibly doubles with Triple Sword, may well not even be 2HKOed... yeah.

Middle

Greg Russellburg (Wild ARMs 5) v Halley Brancket (Shadow Hearts): EDIT: Yep, I'm convinced. Awesome match.
Lune Zoldark (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII): Lune's only Middle? What the devil is wrong with you CK? Decent damage + haha isn't hit + oh yeah full healing that doesn't take a turn >>> Seifer.

Light

Rebecca Streisand (Wild ARMs 5) v Kid (Chrono Cross): I'd wager she's faster, and that tips it.
Micaiah (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) v Cyan Garamonde (Final Fantasy VI): Micaiah's a pretty good Middle! Anyway uh goes first and 2HKOs Cyan and mocks his puny damage.

Lune's DL evasion takes an enormous hit due to her lack of S Ranks, this being true of both OGs, and that makes her accuracy issues even more pronounced. Unless you allow PP-bought S Ranks to her, which in turn would make just about every OGer really happy. Granted, doesn't change the outcome at all: Lune in OG1 can apply the same strategy I mentioned in my post, just replacing Strike with Focus, and win easily.

I guess the split on worth for OG1/OG2 Lune may be enough for a full division shift, though. Forgot she had that full healing in OG1.

EDIT: Also, having the tiny Godlike tag for a match with Seifer in it is so wrong. >_>; *Snips.*

Lune Zoldark (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII) - Yay Lune~

Kartikeya (Wild ARMs 5) v Heat (Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga): Kneejerk.
Sanger Zonvolt (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Xorn (Grandia III): Can't vote.
Mint (Threads of Fate) v Chris Lightfellow (Suikoden III): Can't vote.
Nyarlathotep (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) v Profound Darkness (Phantasy Star IV): Nyarly I don't remember being really that impressive, so yeah.

Heavy

Clarissa Arwin (Wild ARMs XF) v Melbu Frahma (Legend of Dragoon): Can't vote.
Donald Duck (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Crono (Chrono Trigger): Debatably legal lightning resistance in game! Anyway, don't think it matters; think Donald casts Aero after surviving Crono's First turn, then plays a defensive game til Crono's out of resources?
Marona (Phantom Brave) v Ulala Serizawa (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment): Can't vote.
Kurthnaga (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) v Hiro (Lunar Eternal Blue Complete): Yeah, Kurth's being doubled and not going to be able to deal with all of Hiro's evil.  Concussion Sword in worst case scenario.

Middle

Genesis Rhapsodos (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) v Mog (Final Fantasy VII): ...CK's demanding I do this, so...
"As the war of the beasts brings about the world's end, the goddess descends from the sky, wings of light and darkness spread afar, she guides us to bliss, her gift everlasting..."
Translation: Mog wins with Wind Song.
Greg Russellburg (Wild ARMs 5) v Halley Brancket (Shadow Hearts): Faster, should be able to take advantage of this somehow.
Junpei Iori (Persona 3) v Weigraf Folles (Final Fantasy Tactics): Can't vote.
Lune Zoldark (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII): More not voting.

Light

Sho Minamimoto (The World Ends With You) v Stallion (Suikoden Series): Still can't vote.
Goofy (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Jet Enduro (Wild ARMs 3): Jet's got good evade.  Goofy is pure physical.  Jet goes first.  Jet should get off 100 FP Gatling and win that way!
Rebecca Streisand (Wild ARMs 5) v Kid (Chrono Cross): Kneejerk?
Micaiah (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) v Cyan Garamonde (Final Fantasy VI): Cyan can charge up for Quadra Slam and hope that OHKOs!
...except it probably won't, and he's eating...what? 3 Thanis by then?  Dispatch isn't out damaging her, and...yeah, screw it, this fight is too one sided.

Kartikeya (Wild ARMs 5) v Heat (Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga)
Sanger Zonvolt (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Xorn (Grandia III)
Mint (Threads of Fate) v Chris Lightfellow (Suikoden III) - Mint has the skillset from hell, too bad Chris' trick shuts down all of it.
Nyarlathotep (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) v Profound Darkness (Phantasy Star IV)

Heavy

Clarissa Arwin (Wild ARMs XF) v Melbu Frahma (Legend of Dragoon) - I want to be able to vote on this match, must get WAXF....
Donald Duck (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Crono (Chrono Trigger) - I'm crying.
Marona (Phantom Brave) v Ulala Serizawa (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) - I'll allow her to summon, sure.
Kurthnaga (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) v Hiro (Lunar Eternal Blue Complete) - Yay, a FE10 character... too bad he loses handily to Hiro.

Middle

Genesis Rhapsodos (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) v Mog (Final Fantasy VII) - Need Crisis Core, too...
Greg Russellburg (Wild ARMs 5) v Halley Brancket (Shadow Hearts) - Hmm.. not sure really.  Abstain.
Junpei Iori (Persona 3) v Weigraf Folles (Final Fantasy Tactics)
Lune Zoldark (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII)

Light

Sho Minamimoto (The World Ends With You) v Stallion (Suikoden Series) - Rank TWEWY... there's enough draw. Come on, if there's enough call for it, SURELY there's a way to interpret it in the DL...
Goofy (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Jet Enduro (Wild ARMs 3) - LOL Finest Arts hype! Or Goofy-anti-hype.
Rebecca Streisand (Wild ARMs 5) v Kid (Chrono Cross) - Rebecca's unique ability kicked in pretty often for me, I'll go with her double-turn skill activating before Kid can take her out.
Micaiah (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) v Cyan Garamonde (Final Fantasy VI) - I don't see how Micaiah is Light...

Her evade, especially post-Focus, was worthy of pretty significant respect to me. No big deal, though, apparently she has Alert too, so yeah, 12 turns of invincibility while she deals only slightly below average damage is also an option. Either way I'm not seeing Middle at all.

Kartikeya (Wild ARMs 5) v Heat (Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga)- Heat, I guess.
Nyarlathotep (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) v Profound Darkness (Phantasy Star IV)- Leaning Nyarly since the last form is quite fast, and will get in a few extra hits that way.

Heavy

Middle

Greg Russellburg (Wild ARMs 5) v Halley Brancket (Shadow Hearts)- Halley. Greg has a 2HKO to me, but a fairly low one, which is limited by that shit MP.
Junpei Iori (Persona 3) v Weigraf Folles (Final Fantasy Tactics)- Junpei. Regen means Wiegraf 3HKOs. High Counter means Wiegraf 4HKOs and at least a little of his own damage. That gives Junpei enough turns.

Light

Rebecca Streisand (Wild ARMs 5) v Kid (Chrono Cross)- Kid. Steadier damage, effectively faster.
...into the nightfall.

Rank TWEWY... there's enough draw. Come on, if there's enough call for it, SURELY there's a way to interpret it in the DL...

Worst idea I've ever heard.

Her evade, especially post-Focus, was worthy of pretty significant respect to me. No big deal, though, apparently she has Alert too, so yeah, 12 turns of invincibility while she deals only slightly below average damage is also an option. Either way I'm not seeing Middle at all.

People underestimate Alert around here... a lot...

Godlike

Kartikeya (Wild ARMs 5) v Heat (Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga) - Tentacles kind of stop Kartikeya from doing stuff.
Sanger Zonvolt (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Xorn (Grandia III) - Thinking he gets through this.  Good match though.
Nyarlathotep (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) v Profound Darkness (Phantasy Star IV) - Kneejerk.

Heavy

Donald Duck (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Crono (Chrono Trigger) - Yeah I'll buy that.
Marona (Phantom Brave) v Ulala Serizawa (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) - Summons.
Kurthnaga (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) v Hiro (Lunar Eternal Blue Complete) - Can't vote on this yet.

Middle

Greg Russellburg (Wild ARMs 5) v Halley Brancket (Shadow Hearts) - Greg heallocks just fine with his physical (physical+Heavy Crush = 104% PCHP).  Now, that's assuming the damage isn't halved.  Odds turn out that he's got over 50% chance of being able to move to an LP he doesn't get his damaged halved on turn one.
Junpei Iori (Persona 3) v Weigraf Folles (Final Fantasy Tactics) - Not an FFT boss.
Lune Zoldark (Super Robot Taisen Series) v Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII) - Seems easy enough.

Light

Sho Minamimoto (The World Ends With You) v Stallion (Suikoden Series) - Not a TWEWY boss.
Goofy (Kingdom Hearts Series) v Jet Enduro (Wild ARMs 3) - Haha Goofy.
Rebecca Streisand (Wild ARMs 5) v Kid (Chrono Cross) - I guess.
Micaiah (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) v Cyan Garamonde (Final Fantasy VI) - Can't vote on this yet.  If I finish Chapter 1 can I vote on Micaiah's temp form???

Oooh right, Sword has Dash. So Halley has to bank on a 50% chance of a Fire/Water hex not existing, then claim the other, and it's slightly under 50% because Greg could start on it.

Will chew on the vote then. But is that damage with or without Sword's Str boost?

I believe without the Str boost, Elemental Heavy Crush is only around 1700 (Hence this match being fairly clear to me).

Odds turn out that he's got over 50% chance of being able to move to an LP he doesn't get his damaged halved on turn one.

Oooh right, Sword has Dash. So Halley has to bank on a 50% chance of a Fire/Water hex not existing, then claim the other, and it's slightly under 50% because Greg could start on it.

Will chew on the vote then. But is that damage with or without Sword's Str boost?

I actually forgot about Dash.  But actually, there are four possible leypoints, Halley resists two, and three will be on the field.  This guarantees that either Fire or Water WILL be present.

I'll admit that I didn't think about Halley just stealing the LP before Greg got to it.  Don't think that skews the odds in Halley's favor offhand though.

That damage was with the Sword's ATK boost.  Numbers without:

Greg's Attack: 883 (1083 with Hyper)
Greg's Crush: 1298 (on LP) (1583 with Hyper)
Greg's Heavy Crush: 1704 (on LP) (2049 with Hyper)
Average: 1232

Assuming Halley is average durability (he's around there, right?), Greg 2HKOs with Heavy Crush x2 out of the box, but with Hyper, he 2HKOs with Attack->Heavy Crush.  Hyper's cost is steep, but it allows him to hold a heal lock, and... probably long enough to run Halley out of SP, I think?  And I don't think Halley can KO Greg before he gets this set up (he had what, a low 3HKO, he gets 2 turns before Greg can start heal locking, and Greg does have the regen from the LP, which... should allow him to survive?  Don't know how good the regen is though, and it looks like it might matter here).

So yeah, close match if you don't give Greg the Sword stat boosts.  Would have to think about it more in that case.

Godlike

Mint (Threads of Fate) v Chris Lightfellow (Suikoden III): Mint was far from the most competant physical attacked eschewing magic. Chris is. Chris has mute magic. Chris wins.

Middle

Greg Russellburg (Wild ARMs 5) v Halley Brancket (Shadow Hearts): Um...I do hype stat boosts from Sword Rune. However, the leypoint advantage being taken from Greg is kind of bad. Assuming there are two elements Halley doesn't have an advantage on, Halley would be wise to not step on one he's got no advantage to the opposite of, or else. In that case, Greg wins easily. In the case of one, I see Halley taking in via speed, but Greg's offense is larger than my respect for Halley's defense, and then there's Attack/Guard...

However, if Halley gains a leypoint where he boosts the elemental power of one of his spells, Greg is a goner. All-in-all, this comes down to an odds game of leypoints, and since Greg has more winning scenarios than Halley, I give him the duke.

Halley's best spell, Shock Max, can't be boosted by a leypoint. So it doesn't matter if Halley gets one, except to prevent Greg from getting it.

As for my current take on the match... mm. Greg does indeed heal-lock after Hyper. But this gives Halley two opening shots at him, as well as a finisher, i.e. a 3HKO wins it for Halley. I need to check the numbers, but he may just pull that off. If not, yeah, Greg wins if Halley doesn't double before he runs out of SP (Greg's speed is incredibly close to average, so good chance of this) and if Hyper lasts long enough to drain Halley's SP enough to let Greg just start heal-locking with Crush (which it should).

EDIT: Yeah, Halley 3HKOs. Guess that's that.

Greg Russellburg (Wild ARMs 5) v Halley Brancket (Shadow Hearts): Urgh. I'll go with the Elf. EDIT: Forgot he wasn't taking Mediums stat boosts into account >_>
Junpei Iori (Persona 3) v Weigraf Folles (Final Fantasy Tactics): I think I can vote on some P3 PCs now, so High Counter + Regen.

NEB's numbers don't include the medium stat boosts, and I thought you allowed those?  Greg wins pretty easily with them, but yeah, could see him losing without them.

If I remember, I'll go test Leypoint regen later today to see if that changes anything.

Yeah, I forgot Leypoint regen entirely! This may well flip my vote, since Halley's 3HKO certainly isn't a good one.

Did I mention this match rules?
