I'm sure it's groundbreaking in the sense that people are realizing that providing the fix at medical clinic curbs violent crime and gave addicts an easier time reintegrating with society.

Being president doesn't automatically guarantee that, to be fair. Consider Sarah Palin. By most reports she had...let's say a 5%-10% chance to become President. And yet she has some ties to the Alaska Independence Party ("I am not American, I am Alaskan" and all that) and when interviewed about the VP pick before it happened, said that she was most interested in whether the VP pick would be good for Alaska. When she was campaigning in the midwest, she imitated a midwest accent (which she did not have before or after the campaign).

In short, she seems like a bit of a phony, who doesn't have sincere love for the US unless it blossomed very fast.

Now here's where things get complicated: throughout the election an argument I encountered was that Sarah Palin was no less sincere than the other candidates, but she had less preparation time, and much less political rhetorical training and practice, so she was merely worse at covering her tracks. Being very skilled at rhetoric and using it to say "I love my country" doesn't automatically mean the emotion is false, mind you, but it does mean the audience can't tell.

It's tough to tell from candidates what they really feel about the country, but being president isn't easy. I don't think anyone could accuse Obama of not working his ass off, whether they agree with him or not. The proof is in the pudding, as they say.

As much as I despise him, I'd never deny Dick Cheney loves his country. I hate his vision for the country, but he worked hard to make that vision a reality, and he wouldn't have bothered if he didn't care deeply for the sake of the country.

What makes it tough to judge Palin isn't her phoniness, I mean, she's a politician after all, but that she had no national presence, and seemingly no national vision previous to becoming a VP candidate.

Well yeah, and unlike others I don't get the impression she worked hard to get where she did.

She may have worked hard to become the mayor of Wasilla--that I don't know. Alaska, however, the Republican party came to her and started grooming her for the position while she was still Mayor of Wasilla. And certainly I don't get the impression it was Palin working hard to get into the National presidency race. There are several conservative bloggers who probably did more on that front than she did.

The Japanese idea of 'grilled' and the American idea of 'grilled' are very different. If I can get even a reasonable facsimile of American grilled chicken, I would be happy.

And KFC is all over freakin' Japan, so hopefully this isn't just an American trend.

All that sounds vaguely foreign to me anyway, but I actually do enjoy oriental food a lot more than the food that's available over here in a regular basis.

(Although I honestly wonder how would any of you maniacs react to Brazilian food anyhow.)
