As dumb as it is, every majour media outlet knocking them for using porn to get their message out there can go fuck themselves in hell as hypocrites.

Also lol at oh noes moral outrage at pornography!  You will turn people against you with porn!  No one at all looks at porn!  it is disgusting and something that only a fringe fraction of the population looks at and they are all filthy filthy deviants.

Bullshit, get your heads out of your arses, it is just people being people.  It is just dicks for fucks sake, get over it.

Edit 2 - For the record, I think offering up a free clean porn website to teens early twenty year olds is a pretty effective way to win over the hearts and minds of a generation.  PETA aren't exactly targetting middle aged white people with moral qualms about vaginas and penises here.  They know who they are going for and marketting it pretty damned effectively if they carry through on the above.  Of course their message is batshit insane, but that doesn't stop their basic campaign outline from being a pretty smart idea.  Better than throwing paint on rich people's clothing.

I think it's a target audience mismatch, actually.

I don't know what PETA's demographics are, but when I imagine a PETA supporter, I imagine a vegan, probably female, probably militant feminist in her spare time.

By comparison, the target audience for visual pornography tends to be men (whereas women tend to be more into romance novels).  And militant feminists if they're more second wave-style feminism, tend to be pretty strongly anti-pornography (there's definitely a branch of feminism that claims pornography is always degrading to women--it's a branch that has largely been outdated by third wave feminism, but PETA supporters don't strike me as the types to take a half-way opinion on an issue).

So...yeah, they probably will alienate a section of their existing audience with porn.  Maybe they'll pick up a different crowd of supporters to make up for that?

They aren't exactly targetting to preach to the choir with it certainly.

Given PETA's whole damned point in general?  I don't exactly see someone giving up on them and starting to harm animals or start eating meat just because they start making some porn.  Even if they cut all ties from the core PETA group they still have someone following their message.  You lose and advocate, but aim to gain more.

They are a pretty extreme group, they most likely see no real loss to lose some members who disagree in unrelated philosophical issues as long as they stick by their central concepts after they have moved on if it gains them access to a whole new range of impressionable young minds.

Sadly, second wave feminists are getting on in years.  PETA either has the ones they will have or not at this point.  It is a bridge they can likely afford to burn at this point unfortunately.

Ignoring all this of course there is always just the PETA is kind of fucking crazy anyway argument.  So who knows what members will put up with that conflicts their other beliefs if it gets them a soapbox to work from.
