Depends if we're talking "all the way off" or "enough off to access genitals".  From my (albeit limited experience) with skinny jeans, it's the legs that are a huge pain to get out of, not the hips (which tend to be so low cut that they don't even narrow at the top).

Those scanners need to go die in a fire.  From what I heard, during testing of those scanners, they didn't force their female colleagues to get scanned because they didn't want to embarrass them.  Seriously, shouldn't that have been a red flag right there?

Playing Devil's Advocate a bit here, but in certain cases I actually support something similar.  I know there's high schools in Vancouver where the gender ratio is 62%-38%, because certain parents get an abortion if they have a girl.  I also know that my cousin-in-law in Manitoba, the lab technician refused to tell her the gender of the baby during the ultrasound.  Thinking on it: this measure was probably put into place in Manitoba precisely to prevent "abort all girls" strategies, and it seems like a remarkably elegant way to combat the problem.

That said, my sense of anti-discrimination doesn't cover, say, Down's Syndrome.  I'm cool with laws to protect female fetuses, but not Down's Syndrome fetuses.  I'm cool with laws to protect against gender discrimination in hiring, but I don't think that's realistic for Down's Syndrome hiring.  I'm cool with scholarships for women in Science, but not so much for Down's Syndrome people in Science.

I guess I'm just not cool like Sarah Palin.

I'm highly skeptical of this claim, as I've taught at every high school in the city and haven't seen evidence of this. (And it's something I keep track of, because I notice the fact that there are more girls in the higher-level math classes and more boys in the lower-level, in general.) Can you PM me your source for this? I doubt anyone else cares about specific Vancouver high schools, so. <.<

Still, that's distracting from the main issue. I'm not sure how I feel about parents choosing to abort based on a child's gender but if you twisted my arm I'd say ultimately it's their decision (and if people are choosing not to have girls, maybe we should treat the problem rather than the symptom, that being the way girls are viewed in e.g. Chinese society). And regardless of how I feel, a doctor should not be able to lie to a patient out of his own beliefs or press his or her own beliefs on patients; my father (who is a doctor) and my brother (who is a few steps from being one) were both pretty much appalled at this thought. It's part of the profession. This would include, I think, the belief that abortions should not happen for (reason x). The law (Canadian law anyway) is pretty clear that justification isn't needed to be provided.

The troublesome part of allowing people freedom is they don't always use it the way you'd like.  I'm pro-choice, and to me that means I support people's ability to pick and choose which fetus they want to bring into the world on any criterion they see fit, whether I approve of their methods or not.  And mc, there's a principled way to have laws that protect disability as well as gender: allow discrimination only if the disability or gender makes people unfit for the task (yes, there are jobs for which gender should be a legitimate consideration.  think actors.  or Hooters waitresses, I guess.)
