Blizzard is tired of people trolling behind alt accounts.  Their solution?  Everyone posts with their real names!!!

Honestly? Genius. The first part of anonymous internet dickwad is anonymous.

Yeah, except terrible.  When I was younger my parents were worried about internet stalkers even with anonymity--I doubt they would have let me participate in forums where I had to show my full name to the world.  Lack of gender anonymity in particular is unreasonable; how many of us on this forum have "horny stalkers from GameFAQs" stories?

Also, lack of anonymity does not stop dickishness.  I've seen dickishness over company email.  Hell, dickishness can happen in-person.

Also--if they're trying to stop people alt-trolling, instead of having alts show the in-person name, why not have alts show the main-account name?  That's just as good at consolidating opinions to one user.

You're also putting private information out there for anyone to see. It's scary how quickly you can turn a little information to an address or something more.

14 year olds spewing shit is bad, but I also wouldn't want their personal names posted for everyone to see.

Depends on whether or not you're including both stalker and stalkee stories...  ::)

And yes, I see this as a big problem and can't bring myself to support any company that would do this. Case in point:

I was following this thread on the WoW forums. One of the GM posters tried to lead by example and posted his real name. Within 15 minutes people on the forum had posted his home address, telephone number, facebook page, wife's name, and all sorts of other personal information.

The issue to using your account name is that your login for WoW accounts is your email address.   Soooo yeahhhhh.  Also the fact that presenting your account name on every post in the forum is horrible for account security.

Trolling on WoW forums is pretty bad, there is entire subcultures of trolls built up around level 1 alts trolling, it is retarded and realm forums are completely and totally worthless pretty much because of them.  Every thread has a level 1 troll alt in it.

That said the solution is amazingly horrible.  Give each Real ID a display name is way wayyyyy better.

Quote
Hello everyone,

I'd like to take some time to speak with all of you regarding our desire to make the Blizzard forums a better place for players to discuss our games. We've been constantly monitoring the feedback you've given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.

It's important to note that we still remain committed to improving our forums. Our efforts are driven 100% by the desire to find ways to make our community areas more welcoming for players and encourage more constructive conversations about our games. We will still move forward with new forum features such as the ability to rate posts up or down, post highlighting based on rating, improved search functionality, and more. However, when we launch the new StarCraft II forums that include these new features, you will be posting by your StarCraft II Battle.net character name + character code, not your real name. The upgraded World of Warcraft forums with these new features will launch close to the release of Cataclysm, and also will not require your real name.

I want to make sure it's clear that our plans for the forums are completely separate from our plans for the optional in-game Real ID system now live with World of Warcraft and launching soon with StarCraft II. We believe that the powerful communications functionality enabled by Real ID, such as cross-game and cross-realm chat, make Battle.net a great place for players to stay connected to real-life friends and family while playing Blizzard games. And of course, you'll still be able to keep your relationships at the anonymous, character level if you so choose when you communicate with other players in game. Over time, we will continue to evolve Real ID on Battle.net to add new and exciting functionality within our games for players who decide to use the feature.

In closing, I want to point out that our connection with our community has always been and will always be extremely important to us. We strongly believe that Every Voice Matters, ( http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/about/mission.html ) and we feel fortunate to have a community that cares so passionately about our games. We will always appreciate the feedback and support of our players, which has been a key to Blizzard's success from the beginning.

Ordaining a women priest nets you the same punishment as pedophilia as far as the Vatican is concerned.
Don't think of it as a novel. Think of it as a chance to retroactively win every argument you have ever walked away from.

Sounds like it, except if a female ordination ever gets attention from the press, they'll deny everything and help hide the paper trail.

Which begs the question: what will they do with their secret army of female preists?  Also, when you're in the confessional booth, do you call her "Father"?

Can someone fill me in on this? Why is a birth certificate authenticated by the state not enough? What are they hoping for here? "Hahah, just kidding, we totally made that up"? A nurse to come up and swear on the Bible that she was there at the birth? ... I just don't get where that's going.

Apparently because it's not a photocopy of the exact birth certificate that was printed up on the day of his birth, and instead a modern certificate printed with the data on file (you know, like a state government gives anybody who asks for a new birth certificate) it's a communist Muslim liberal terrorist fake and therefore not worth mentioning. Also the kerning is wrong.

The perverse thing is that as horrible as the comfort women were, they were not the worst thing the IJA did.  What is the gain by denying THIS?  Does that mean that Japan was okay in WWII?  Or are they going to deny the whole "invading and killing everyone and taking their stuff" part too?  (Don't answer that.  I do know that the hard-right also denies the Rape of Nanking and a whole bunch of other atrocities basically on the grounds that the official Japanese press didn't talk about it, never mind that the official military records do.)

You are doing propaganda wrong Snowfire.  You don't even MENTION that shit.  The less you mention it and the more you beat up bullshit about something that isn't even the fucking issue the more success you will have at getting Nanking ignored.

It is the exact same strategy used by mud slinging campaigns in western politics, so I can see why they would think it might be successful.

So, I knew it was going to happen, but the No on Prop. 19 arguments have come out, and my are they retarded.

Quote from: Diane Feinstein
ARGUMENT AGAINST PROPOSITION 19
Even if you support legalization of recreational marijuana, you should vote “No” on Proposition 19.
Why? Because the authors made several huge mistakes in writing this initiative which will have severe, unintended consequences.

For example, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) strongly opposes Proposition 19 because it will prevent bus and trucking companies from requiring their drivers to be drug-free. Companies won’t be able to take action against a “stoned” driver until after he or she has a wreck, not before.

School districts may currently require school bus drivers to be drug-free, but if Proposition 19 passes, their hands will be tied – until after tragedy strikes. A school bus driver would be forbidden to smoke marijuana on schools grounds or while actually behind the wheel, but could arrive for work with marijuana in his or her system.

Public school superintendent John Snavely, Ed.D. warns that Proposition 19 could cost our K-12 schools as much as $9.4 billion in lost federal funding. Another error could potentially cost schools hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants for our colleges and universities. Our schools have already experienced severe budget cuts due to the state budget crisis.
The California Chamber of Commerce found that “if passed, this initiative could result in employers losing public contracts and grants because they could no longer effectively enforce the drug-free workplace requirements outlined by the federal government.”

Employers who permit employees to sell cosmetics or school candy bars to co-workers in the office, may now also be required to allow any employee with a “license” to sell marijuana in the office.

Under current law, if a worker shows up smelling of alcohol or marijuana, an employer may remove the employee from a dangerous or sensitive job, such as running medical lab tests in a hospital, or operating heavy equipment. But if Proposition 19 passes, the worker with marijuana in his or her system may not be removed from the job until after an accident occurs.
The California Police Chiefs Association opposes Proposition 19 because proponents “forgot” to include a standard for what constitutes “driving under the influence.” Under Proposition 19, a driver may legally drive even if a blood test shows they have marijuana in their system.

Gubernatorial candidates Republican Meg Whitman and Democrat Jerry Brown have both studied Proposition 19 and are urging all Californians to vote “No,” as are Democratic and Republican candidates for Attorney General, Kamala Harris and Steve Cooley.

Don’t be fooled. The proponents are hoping you will think Proposition 19 is about “medical” marijuana. It is not. Proposition 19 makes no changes either way in the medical marijuana laws.

Proposition 19 is simply a jumbled legal nightmare that will make our highways, our workplaces and our communities less safe. We strongly urge you to vote “No” on Prop 19.

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator

Laura Dean-Mooney
National President, Mothers Against Drunk Driving

Yep, legal marijuana means everyone will show up to work stoned.  *facepalm*  This is full of logical fallacies and specifically chosen words to fear-monger, but this one was so special I had to point it out.

Quote from: Enormously stupid
Under current law, if a worker shows up smelling of alcohol or marijuana, an employer may remove the employee from a dangerous or sensitive job, such as running medical lab tests in a hospital, or operating heavy equipment. But if Proposition 19 passes, the worker with marijuana in his or her system may not be removed from the job until after an accident occurs.

Yes, because marijuana stays in your system long after its intoxicating effects wear off.  This says nothing about workers not being able to send workers home for smelling like pot or obviously being intoxicated (it's pretty damn easy to tell).  Nice wording there, pro.

I'm not quite sure why I didn't expect an enormously stupid argument from the opposition to this proposition.  Should have known better.

It'd cut down on the insane amounts of alt trolling and trolling in general, but wouldn't release sensitive information to everyone.  (Unless you have a name like Chapin!)
