The only problem I see there is the fact that a lack of good sexual education and safe sex practices look like it will jumpstart an epidemic of STDs if they aren't careful; from the article it sounds like it's largely oral sex so pregnancy, though a worry, is less so of one than STDs. Other than that, who cares. Let 'em fuck, and for gods sake somebody should teach them to do it safely. I really don't see the source of the outrage ("Deserves the full wrath of the morality police?").

it's so strange on the face of it, but looking at a society that recently came into considerable wealth and was traditionally very conservative, is it that shocking? I figure these kids fit neatly between hippies and contemporary college hookup culture. I think if the internet had existed and the Vietnam war hadn't, the hippies would've turned out very much like these kids. maybe.

The fact that conservative parents and society has led to blissful ignorance of the dangers of STDs certainly helps, too (and also extends the hippie similarities).

I wonder what you can make of the fact that they combine being hippies with the most obnoxiously vapid consumerism this side of the '80s? I don't care much about the orgies (though I'm sure if I were a parent of a young child living in the area I would), but the incredible, incredible narcissism of this movement is pretty offensive to me.

That I think has more to do with the age and affluence of the movement. It's really no different from the Emo trends here in the states. Hell, at least they aren't whiney about it.

This is pretty much my thoughts on the issue as well. In fact I'm sitting here trying to think of something else to add, but I can't. Zenny covered this quite well. It's just sex, nothing to get up in arms about, but they certainly do need to be taught how to have it safely.

And the emo trend really is no different than any other youth trend ever. Young people do shit. The offensive part of the emo trend isn't that they're kids trying to do something distinctly different from what kids did previously, it's that they cut themselves and whine and cry about how horrible their lives are because their upper middle class white parents disciplined them lightly or something like that. "It's no different than emo", sure, in one way, but not in the way that should generate as much shit as the emo trend does.
