It is pretty tame for Gamefaqs, but I have high hopes for it to degenerate further into the NO ONE SHOULD EVER HAVE OPINIONS ON ANYTHING HOW DARE YOU QUESITON MY OPINION MY MUM SAYS I AM SPECIAL zone pretty quickly.

Hah!  Given that the reclassification of Pluto as not a planet was essentially the governing scientific board creating a  new definition as opposed to finding Pluto to not be in accordance to an old one, I say if they want it to be a planet, let 'em.

I fail to see how reclassification of Pluto changes how imporant and great a discovery was anyway.  I say they should go fuck themselves with a stick wrapped in barbed wire.

I always get this general depressing feeling when I see threads like this. People are so sensitive about opinions and having dissenting opinions. Obviously, on one end 'people shouldn't be so sensitive'. But the other end of the spectrum is that people really do throw the weapon around carelessly. Having an opinion on something, or even liking something in general opens a person up to having criticism hurled at them for it. Even if a person likes something for a logical reason or because of differing values.

It just saddens me that this kind of discussion -does- always seem to degrade into the NOSEHOOAHDYQMOMMSIAS zone so quickly.

Thing is, there was no definition of a planet beforehand, just nine celestial bodies that were arbitrarily tagged with that label instead of asteroid or whatever else. There is simply no scientific justification whatsoever for calling Pluto a planet while excluding the many similar sized objects in the same viscinity, such as Eris which is actually larger than Pluto. The International Astronomy Union simply opted for a more exclusive definition of a planet rather than a more inclusive one, which had been proposed earlier and had plenty of detractors.
