I dunno, this just amuses the hell out of me that Angelina Jolie is the most powerful celebrity while THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES is 49th. What the heck were they thinking...?

love the expression on the anchors' faces.  wonder if that's a personal testament that the street reporter is someone you wouldn't want to get involved with.

Doing a bit of digging...apparently this:
Quote
Barack Obama joins the list as the first sitting head of state to land on the Celebrity 100. The President's historic election last year helped him sell millions of books. He debuts on this year's list at No. 49, with book earnings of $2.5 million for the 12-month period.

How much money you make is VERY IMPORTANT to determining how powerful you are apparently.

The one modifier on that list is that it's a celebrity list. At least it makes far more sense than putting Angelina Jolie ahead on a powerful person list (And well, within even the terms of how one might define a celebrity, it's certainly justifiable, as we often tend to disassociate celebrities from politicians).

I think I'd be more fine with it if it didn't have Obama on it, since that is just silly.

Well no previous list has had a politician.  Obama has enough independent celebrity status to have big book sales, and people making T-shirts in his likeness even well after the election, so I think they are trying to measure that half of him in isolation.

It's also clear that the amount of money you've drawn in as a celebrity is one of the bigger factors in this list--they note that JKRowling was big on the list last year, but hasn't had an HP book this year so fell out of the top 100.  I doubt this means that she's not a celebrity anymore.

No developments on the impasse in the NY state senate.

No paychecks for them, either.

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2009/07/08/2009-07-08_no_paychecks_for_donothing_albany_senators_dinapoli_order_to_hold_paychecks_take.html

Thank you state comptroller.  Probably not legal for him to be withholding the money, but the senate probably needs to resume existence to do anything about it.

nothing to say.

This is what makes local media outlets great: the ability to shine a light on this kind of crap and get something done about it.  Public opinion is a powerful force, and I'd bet my last dollar it'll do some good here.

What'd I tell you.  Lest you feel any pity for the club, I've worked for summer camps, and believe me, the first thing a facilty like a pool is going to do when it makes a contract is set limits on how many people you can bring to the facility at a time.  For them to say the ratio of lifeguards to swimmers was off because they didn't know how many kids were coming is not remotely believable.

Good point, hadn't thought of that.

Actually, now that you mention it there are better solutions to the problem.  Like "Lifeguard blows whistle, yells 'Too many people in the pool', divides the kids into two groups, and rotates out groups every 10 minutes."

Yeah, I worked for a lifeguard when I was a teen, and a large group of children that can't swim is your worst nightmare.  Ideally there should be a mechanism in place that limits how many people can be in different areas of the pool.  I can see a pool canceling a contract because of the reasons they stated; I just can't see them getting into one in the first place.

This quote seems to sum up the article pretty well:

Quote
"I think the police department and the DA's office select people to prosecute who have the least ability to defend themselves," says Chatham, who says he took the case on principle. "If these pictures were on their way back to some big home in Highland Park, they would have turned around and left. They were going after easy marks."
