Don't think of it as a novel. Think of it as a chance to retroactively win every argument you have ever walked away from.

Oh my, this is a good one. So some blog posts about how AOL (or, excuse me, it's Aol. now) is going to integrate with Facebook. Everything is fine until idiots manage to get their computers turned on and can't remember the address for Facebook. So they google "Facebook login" and click the first link, which is this blog entry. And since they can't seem to figure out how to log in to this page that is not Facebook, they leave angry comments in the comments section about how they hate the new layout and can't even find out how to log in.

...Oh wow. I... I knew comments sections were usually a bit 'special', but that's taking the piss.
Seriously, do people go on Google for everything? Googling Facebook to find Facebook.com seems slightly pointless and stupid.

In fairness, from the looks of things the majority of people making dumbasses of themselves are over 40.  Now I don't know about you but if I think about my parents using the internet it is not beyond the realms of possibility that they would get confused and write something like that.

Holy crap old people don't know how to use the internet.  Surprise.

EDIT:  Right after typing this post I kept reading comments and found one by someone clearly over 70 that just said "HELP!!!!!".  That made me laugh.

Old people are so terrible at the internet.

*shrug* done that for a lot of sites like that.  If I click around the site a little and can't find something that should be easy to find, I'll google an appropriate question, usually finding something on Yahoo answers or whatever.  Granted, it works because I only use it when I'm having trouble locating an operation that I've never used before, have made an honest effort to find through normal navigation, and know the website has the operation.

it's good for when you were looking for something under .com and the real one is .net or has a - or between words or whatnot.  facebook, though...yeah.

Yeah, like hell I can remember which major sites are .com and which are .net (as well as scattered .org's, .ca's, .uk's, .jp's, and so on) beyond a few ones I use regularly. Google gives the answer nicely. Don't see anything wrong with using it.

My mother thinks every website is just "name of the business.com" If it was anything BUT facebook.com it would make sense to me, but that's the one ending that I expect people to remember.

It doesn't really bother me that some people google a website name to find the address.  That is OK.  But apparently most of the (40+) people couldn't read anything more than the headline, and were apparently incapable of recognizing that what they were looking for may be the second or *gasp*  THIRD result of their query.

That is what there is to appreciate about this:  We are better at computers than old people.  Hooray?

So basically no kid from Utah public schools would ever get admitted to college again.

I'm trying to decide if that's a good idea or not.

I'd be more worried about the kids who went to a Mormon private school than those who went to a non-denominational public school.  So...I'm thinking "bad idea".

But uhh, yeah: grade 12 is a really bad year to cut.  If anything, cut some random middle grade; let the 13-year-olds have a year off, or something; nobody likes teaching them anyway (rebellious puberty-stricken whippersnappers!)

*shrug* It's not that bad of an idea.  Many 12th graders only go to school half a day anyway because they've already finished their core curriculum in the previous three years.

Gives the kids who want to get a job and get in the workforce the opportunity to do so.  And if you want to expand your education more prior to attending "real" college, take classes at a community college instead.  They'd probably learn more there than in a high-school environment anyway.

I can also see where the idea is coming from, but I still think it's a bad idea. I know that at my high school the only state credits you needed that you didn''t get before your senior year was a 4th year of english and I don't think situations like that are uncommon. However, I think that it would produce less well rounded students overall especially in the subjects of science, social studies, and fine arts. It would also be particularly bad for students who struggle with math because they wouldn't have that extra year to catch up.

I really like the idea, myself.  Or at least the intention behind it.  The secondary general-education portion of school goes on for too long anyway.  However, this is symptomatic of a problem with the American education system that won't be resolved without sweeping reforms.

I think that the way the British education system works is a far better way of implementing things (in theory anyway).  Primary education is similar to ours, then secondary general education is finished up by 16.  After that, if you want to enter the workforce, you do.  If you want to continue your education, you go to college, which seems to be a lot like the "core curriculum" my university forces upon Freshmen/Sophomores, and then University is more akin to the last few semesters of an American undergraduate degree.

Theoretically, it is a much sounder system--kids are educated faster, less money is spent because only a percentage of kids keep going to school past 16.   Now, in practice I recognize that this system has its own flaws that I'm not all that familiar with, but I think it indicates that it is possible to cut a few years out of the curriculum with some proper planning.  Now, they're doing it entirely at the wrong end (I remember bits and pieces of my education throughout high school.  I don't remember ANYTHING I learned in Middle school), but their hearts are in the right place.  The American education system is in serious need of reform and we need to stop holding the K-12 curriculums sacrosanct, but it's a matter that needs to be given more thought than "Fuck it give the kids a year off."

The big difference as I understand it, and I consider this a problem though your mileage may vary: you better know early in the process what you want to do with your life, because your education is much more targeted than general.

Not strictly true. I had no clue what I wanted to do last year, so I finished the college courses I was doing and started on another.
College isn't one-time only, so it allows for some changes if you aren't sure what to do, and some courses are vague enough to apply in a variety of industries.

I agree.  I think I would advocate, after finishing "college" or whatever, a manditory 2-year internship in whatever field a student thinks they would be going to university to study.  This would give them some experience in the field, so they can get a taste of it and realize "oh wait maybe I don't want to do this until I retire" and rethink things.  But I have no ideas on how to practically implement that, nor am I really sure that it would help that much.  It might be a viable option given enough thought.

The current US system doesn't have that?  I remember vividly being a Freshman (so 15 years old) and being hounded relentlessly that if I didn't take the right electives and figure out what I wanted to do I'd be SOL come college time.

I never got that. I remember being hounded to take impressive-looking electives so college admissions officials wouldn't laugh uproariously at my application before setting it on fire, but nobody told me I had to know for certain what I wanted to do with my life before entering college.

Their public schools are already rated second-worst in the country. I lived there when I went to middle school; you know how many kids were in my Geometry class? Sixty-five.

Well they do a shit job preparing you for it if that is the thing.  Too much time is spent on generalized/foundation knowledge and too little on more specialization.  Sure there are some AP classes that help (particularly in the sciences) but not really.
