To mix it up- I'd rank Noir at the bottom.  80% of every episode spent doing the same monochrome flashbacks over and over for 2 minutes of mediocre action, with an ongoing plot that made no sense whatsoever.

Bah, heathens. Noir's great.

Anyway...I'm inclined to give Elfen Lied the title of WAE on this particular day. I think it was Otter who summed it up best: "Gory catgirl porn." You know, I'm pretty lenient about nudity, but that is just a toxic combo right there. Creepy pedophilia vibes everywhere, too. The only thing it does right is in swiping some groovy surrealist art for the intro.

Honorary mention goes to Lain for being pretentious tripe from beginning to end, and to Ikki Tousen for being a fanservice show that fails at even delivering satisfactory fanservice.

Not that I've really watched any anime in a fairly long time now... but even so, my nod goes to Berserk. An idiotic, soulless anime that tries to excuse its total lack of worthwhile characters or storytelling by being "gritty". Honourable mention to Scryed, out of things I can remember. Bad shounen that occasionally pretends it's being deep, with one of the stupidest main character/rival anime relationships I can recall. (And in that genre, such relationships already suck as a rule, so...)

Yeah, Berserk is another bad one.  I watched ~6 episodes trying to figure out what the hell everyone else was raving about.

Seconded.  And if you think this show is bad, watch the second season, Ikki Tousen: Dragon Destiny.  I don't know how they did it, but somehow they managed to make this show even worse than the original.  That's quite an accomplishment.

Smash Hit sucks.

Reign: The Conqueror sucks.

Golden Boy sucks.

Dragonball Z sucks.

Noir...no, this show rules.  I don't know what you people are smoking.

Now I only watched 2.5 episodes of Berserk, but there was a reason I didn't get any farther. Elfboy is correct.

Ikki Tousen for being a fanservice show that fails at even delivering satisfactory fanservice.

I would rate Ikki Tousen as the worst anime I've ever seen and proberly ever will (Maybe there is worse but I don't watch many anime). Its just a plain mess in everything. It trying to base its story on actual history is the other thing that annoys me greatly about it (I don't even remember most of the characters names so I'll just refer to who they are "supposed" to be)
*It is these fighters destiny to die like it happened in History*
Thats the line they beam out but I don't remember Chen's death in history being raped constantly by the Dong's henchman.
The only time I felt safe from the horrible and deadly panty shots and "Booby bombs" (As they call breasts in Ikki Tousen) is when Cao Cao is on screen and thats proberly only because he hangs around with a bunch of men.

In fact this show was so bad I wanted the villain (The Dong) to win. Why? Because I wanted him to just kill everyone else so this mess would be over.

However even after that massive torture I saw a thing for the second season and watched the opening of it. I thought wow, they've improved somewhat (It was bad yes, but +A material compared to the first season). Then I checked halfway into it (So I don't waste my time getting panty shoted enough times for it to be considered a sin) and found the writers had gone into overdrive on the stupidity so I just forgot about even attempting to watch the crap.

Besides Ikki Tousen I haven't seen much of what I would consider a bad anime (tenjho tenge maybe but compared to Ikki Tousen its a master piece)

Hm, haven't seen Ikki Tousen, but if hilariously bad fighting shows with large breasts are your bag, go for Air Master.  Air Master knows its place.  It aspires, largely successfully, to be the best goddamn bad fighting show with huge breasts out there.

Ditto. Although I found part of the charm to be that it didn't glorify the horrible, horrible people that Griffith and Guts become, so if you don't like it when the protagonists are scum, I can understand the hate.

This topic seems to be more about 'the most over-rated anime' rather than the worst. Certainly Kenshin's nothing special, but there's tons of obscure anime out there that no one should ever watch, that hardly anyone's heard of, and rightfully so. Just my two cents on the discussion. Generally, if it was popular enough to get translated officially, there's probably -something- of value in the show/movie/oav that puts it above the majority of the crap that -doesn't- get an official stateside release.

UFO Maiden Valkyrie might be the exception, seconding the OP's sentiments.... >.>;;

I consider myself as having good taste, and have some friends with good taste, so yeah, if we're talking series (rather than movies) I've normally just not bothered with things that I know I'll hate.  Which is unfortunately a lot more of recent anime, as I find the pedophilia of late anime utterly horrible.  I mean, there's good bad and there's bad bad.  What happened to adults being bloodily spattered everywhere with cursing?  That was the good kind of badness which is watchable if sufficiently bored, as opposed to getting a shoe thrown at the screen and turned off. Le sigh.  (And I'm not even a fan of the type of anime that had its previous bad reputation, but I'll take that any day over this. Random fun link you've probably seen before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVpwJbLLivU& .)

For "worst anime series that I've successfully sat through in its entirety voluntarily..." hmm.  I think I'm going to have to with Madlax here.  I entirely disagree with saying Noir is bad, above (and for what it's worth, the flashbacks stop being so common after the 5th episode or so).  However Madlax is all the lesser parts of Noir accentuated, the better parts of Noir removed, and some entirely ridiculous crap thrown in.  The main reason I was able to sit through it was the lingering promise of resolving some of the more interesting mysteries from before, but said resolution was beyond lame anyway, so yeah.  Great music, though, and some of the mysteries were presented well enough before hand.  It's just that their resolution sucked.  This show still isn't totally worthless, but I certainly can't recommend it.

The worst in general that I sensibly quit on... hmm, lots of options, and most of them say more about having misleading advertising than actually being bad.  Again, I'm not going to bother even trying horrible harem shows.  While I'm on a Bee Train rant, they haven't done anything right since Noir.  .hack gets an A for idea and the first three episodes or so and then proceeds to inexplicably do absolutely nothing, not even good filler episodes.  But even that's better than some of their other recent stuff.  I gave Murder Princess a shot off of lingering respect for Noir and the general idea being salvageable.  But the first episode alone has about ten head-desk worth moments.  Yes, this show is more about putting women in fetish gear as quickly as possible, pretty much, while having a really horrid art design and style.  Oh god did it suck horribly.  That'll be my recent one-episode wonder to convince me not to watch.

On a slightly different note, for "worst anime that is still basically watchable and has some good points," I think I'll have to go with Gasaraki.  It defines the exact line between mediocrity and bad; if it had been one iota worse, it'd be unwatchable.  My college's anime club was showing it along with Key: The Metal Idol afterward, and Key was good enough that I didn't mind watching Gasaraki and ruthlessly mocking it with my friends.  Gasaraki is one of those animes that has pretensions of being somewhat realistic, despite including giant robots.  Fine.  Except...  it totally fails at being realistic, yet they clearly think they are, which is painful.  The mystical plot is mildly interesting if not particularly creative, but their attempt at a political plot is pretty much Front Mission except hit in the head with a brick repeatedly (and Front Mission Political Plot is not really high on the scale).  Sample story from it: Okay, there's one character who's basically read the script, i.e. he knows ridiculous things he shouldn't know and no one else should.  This means that he knows three days early that the United States is going to have a press conference and declare to the world that their harvest was bad, and furthermore will probably ban exports & imports.  This will lead to instability in Japan and knock out the government.  Except...  wait, no one else knows this three days before?!  Did all the satellites blow up?  Or for that matter tourists driving through Iowa?  A famine is basically impossible to hide short of North Korea-esque restrictions on travel & communication.  There wouldn't *need* to be a press conference that would surprise the world with this fact; everyone would already know if the weather was bad / a plague hit the crop / whatever.  Furthermore, why on earth would the United States *close* their markets in event of a famine?  The reason why poor countries sometimes do this is because they don't have money to buy outside food anyway, and asshole land barons may export some of the country's food for money anyway if the aristocracy is still fed.  The United States is rich.  We'd cheerfully keep markets open and buy other country's food, perhaps causing a famine in their countries.  There's no incentive to close the markets whatsoever unless Japan is vastly more wealthy than the US in the future and also voraciously hungry!  So yeah, this plotline fails.  Apparently the director was under the sad deluded impression that having animated newsmen deliver the news made it realistic or something.  Also, Gasaraki has among the worst opening episodes I've ever seen.  Thankfully it recovers slightly, but the first episode?  Watch it for the trainwreck.  It's mostly about declaring completely ludicrous blood pressures (300 over 200?  Yeah, your veins are now exploding) and then watching as technicians in the van inject compound C into the pilot.  But oh no!  Blood pressure still rising, let's try injecting Compound E!

Berserk is... well, you can probably skip the first six to eight episodes because they don't really do anything but get everyone in the starting position. The story isn't really that interesting until once Griffith has his mercenary army become Royal troops. At that point, it's actually pretty interesting, if incredibly fucked up and relentless in its tendency to make you start to think everything will be okay before shattering those hopes... like, four different times.

The Manga is quite a bit different, or so I understand. It's rooted much more in supernatural horror, and they cut almost all of those elements out (except for in the very first episode and the very last one).

I tend to be able to enjoy shonen anime, no matter how ridiculous, on some level as long as the fight scenes and characters are ridiculous and colorful and flashy enough.

S-Cry-Ed is, at times, the most ridiculously colorful and flashy shonen anime out there.

Thus, by diverting blood flow to certain parts of my brain and neglecting others, it becomes a really really fun show to watch.

I'll also say that I like Bleach a fair bit, and Naruto isn't too bad. Inuyasha is tolerable, and I liked the Band of Seven arc. Kenshin... eeeehyup. Not so good there.

Candidate for Goddess rubbed me wrong, though I didn't see much of it.

I've mostly managed to avoid anything that I could really list here, and I tend to be so easygoing about quality that I'll enjoy some really objectively bad shows, movies, etc. to some degree.

I'll contemplate this, and return.

From what I hear, it's not that they cut out the horror elements so much as that they're only a major part of the setting after the Eclipse, which is a large majority of the manga but only those two episodes of the anime.

I would definately put a lot before Kenshin (having seen way too much anime). Golgo 13: Queen Bee is the worst, in my experience. I'd still put Tekken, X: The Movie, as well as a lot of ADV and CPM's catalogue before Kenshin. CPM had a lot of 80's/early 90's shovelware titles they had near-indefinate licenses on like Garaga, plus the hilariously bad M.D. Geist (Oh the stories I have). ADV just decided licensing shitty shows would be a good business model. Most are just mediocre, but some are truly terrible, like the aforementioned UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie. They also licensed Xenosaga: The Animation, which says something. For every Evangelion or Full Metal Panic (sales wise) they licensed, they licensed like, 5 shows like Wandaba Style or Cyberteam in Akihabara. I blame David Williams.

Funimation is starting to worry me. Who seriously thinks Smash Hit has a chance here? Sports anime does TERRIBLE here.

I tend to be the same as Ultradude. I have an odd liking for generic shounen. I wouldn't honestly call Scryed generic shounen, but yeah. Same principle. If you want truly generic shounen that I enjoyed, thats more Busou Renkin (What I call the Tokiko Effect), or the epitome of this, Tokyo Underground.

The Manga is quite a bit different, or so I understand. It's rooted much more in supernatural horror, and they cut almost all of those elements out (except for in the very first episode and the very last one).

Pretty much dead on. The show's only redeeming factor was the soundtrack as far as I'm concerned.

Also, ahaha Xenosaga anime.

OOHHHH I had forgot about the Tekken movie.  It was really bad as well.

The really big points against it were randomly having to reference every single character and half give a nod to every side plot you possibly can without doing more than giving them a nod.  So you end up with there being raptors on the island in what ends up being essentially the exact same fighting tournament used in every single fighting game turned into a movie ever "There is this island and you will have to fight like anyone anywhere any time for *Insert reason here*".  Why are there raptors?  Cause early Tekken (which the movie was released around) has a raptor secret character in it.  A single raptor mind you.  Not like multiple of them.  THere is more Bruce Lee Clones in the series than there is Raptors.  But there is a pack of them in the movie.  They chase some people for a bit into a lab so they can have disjointed Gun Jack and Yoshimitsu plot.

Ikkitousen hate is justified.

It might please you to note that there is /another/ Ikkitousen animu (forgot if it's OVA or season) coming out this summer! So keep an eye out for that (read: no, dont). My taste in anime is generally iffy, I don't really tend to discuss the shows that people here have watched. Then again this is "worst anime ever" so meh.

thanks for reminding me!

Ladies and gentlemen, in the category of 'Bad, bad anime with adults dying horribly and blood splattering everywhere' I humbly submit...

Mad Bull 34.

I particularly remember this show by the previews for it in other Manga animes, and in particular the shot where Mad Bull, in the middle of a shootout, drops his pants to reveal a bunch of grenades tastefully covering his junk.
