See previous comments about Texas.  I find the concept of an adult not having a license very strange, because that just doesn't happen here.  Places are too spread apart.

No, because I'm a coward and there is no way in hell I'm going to let myself get in a crash due to the incompetence of someone else.

...Yet I'm somehow fine with buses. Whatever, my mind works in mysterious ways.

Bus passengers generally aren't at the whims of stupid car-drivers to the same degree, since car-on-bus is far worse for the car than the bus.

They are at the whims of the bus drivers, but I like to think that the HR department of transit authorities has at least a certain minimal standard for hiring.

Why do bus drivers need to be competant?  They're not the ones that'll be trashed if they crash.  Nor will they likely be the ones legally at fault.  Nor are they the ones getting tossed around the bus like rag dolls because they don't have to get seated within three seconds of getting on the bus.

Same as Alex, kinda. You mostly have to get a license in Jersey.

Nuh uh.  I walk to my job and I walk to the train.  Train gets me into center city Philadelphia, which has trains to get me other places and is often my destination anyway.

Not to mention the bus driver's the only one with a seatbelt. <_<

But yes, maybe I was having too much faith in the hiring mechanisms of bureaucracies.

Which is why we get all the stories of power-mad bus drivers going beserk in traffic and murdering civilians. When will we ever learn?
Don't think of it as a novel. Think of it as a chance to retroactively win every argument you have ever walked away from.
