Thanks Alex!  I'll see how things are going after OK's game gets under way and the Touhou game gets closer to starting up as well.  Maybe one of the other ones above me will be starting up then and I can jump on one of them (before Gate sees them and takes a slot *stealth wifey skillz *)rather than seeing if I could jump mine through the queue.

I've changed my mind once again. Upon opening Touhou signups, I will be providing a list of selectable characters for every setup between 21 and 25 players (the vast majority of the list is the same every time).

And Alex surprises me by not jumping all over Ran.

Oh, I'm jumping on Ran, believe me.  But you said to make a list, and Yuka would be a decent second.

Man, open signups early. I wanna secure my firebird. Or if not her, then my cutereaper. Or if not here, then... I dunno, one of the rabbits...

Carthrat: I'll probably open signups when Cid opens Day 3 in his game.

EDIT: I'll put it out there right now that Aya Syameimaru and Momizi Inubashiri are going to be under my charge and thus not selectable.

Hmm, does anyone know how to move that Mafia-postcounter thing over to the new boards?

Looking back, I don't see that this was answered.  That might be just because there IS no answer, but I'm hoping that's not the case.  Any ideas?

Hah, just as expected of a scum lurker, ##Vo- oh wait.
I liked it, to a degree. It would be nice to have it there if possible; you don't have to use/agree with it if you don't like it.

I dislike it because of people like me, yes.  That meaning people that aren't around all day, so try to go for quality in posts rather than quantity.  Post counters totally ignore the overall worth of the posts in question.

Really?  I found it most helpful.  Sometimes I get so caught up in the active conversations that it's easy to miss people who are lurking.  Not that it should be taken as gospel, because really anyone can lurk and snyone can have massive post counts.  But it was a good tool on who needed prodding to post more so we could get a better feel for them.  People who use it as the end all be all are really missing the point.

Yeah, this doesn't take into consideration those who have low post quantity, but high quality, but again it's a tool to use for refernce, not the only word.  One should always read what has been posted, not just the end numbers.

I have to agree with the "Yay, it is gone group." That thing was being used as a crutch. And an annoying one. Yes, it helped with lurkers, but people were coming down on anyone with a meh vote count, ignore quality and promoting post count inflation. As I've stated multiple times, I started splitting my posts up purely to raise my count and get the numbers off my back. Content didn't change, just presentation.

My take is that it's a useful tool and doesn't do anything that can't be done painstakingly by hand.  And I know I at least will be hand-counting if it doesn't come back.

If people conflate post count with post content, A.  they're probably scum and B. you gotta deal with it.

Woops! It's probably just as well, since I've been busy and will continue to be so at least for the next few days. Seriously, though, who lynches a moon rabbit?

Newbie suggestion
« Reply #64 on: January 30, 2008, 09:46:53 PM »
After Touhou and seeing the lynch on Patch for "bad play" and seeing Eviltom get lynched frequently for it (and others come damn close to lynching me for it to) i would like to make a suggestion on a role that should maybe be considered being put into the occasional game.

Mentor/Protege

Conditions
The Mentor/Protege Roles may only be placed in a game with a Rookie player (Player on their 1st or 2nd game)
The Mentor/Protege Role is only used when the Rookie is on the side of the town (Should the Rookie be on the scum side they should have no need of a mentor).

The Mentor is selected AFTER the Roles have been arranged, for balancing issues the Mentor is always a Vanilla Townie selected by the Mod.

Role
The Mentor/Protege is a role similar to a Masons Role, both know each others alignment and both may communicate privately during a game, this way the Protege can seek advice when needed and the mentor can help them when needed.
The Mentor Role is never shown on the flip or to a Rolecop.

Penalties
If either of the players Reveals/Hints that there is a Mentor/Protege within the game, both the Mentor and Protege suffer a modkill.

Basically, with as minimal balance issues as possible, the aim of this role is so that begginers to the game have someone to go to to seek advice while playing.
Arguably it does give tow a slight advantage, however a new player does give the town a disadvantage, so it may balance out.

Just a suggestion that may help stop some of the chaoticness the new players cause when they join the game.
So Anyone got any Thoughts/Suggestions/Improvements?

This is basically masons, the suggestion boils down to "use masons more often," which is at the discretion of the mods anyhow.

A better suggestion would be for new players to have a mentor OUTSIDE their current game and unaware of the setup that they can talk to regarding basic strategy.  That could be done easily... if there were people interested and willing to basically play the game without playing in it.  Perhaps there are?  I'd volunteer myself, except that I'm either playing in or co-modding/helping with setup of every game already.

All those folks what say they're getting burnt out and want to sit on the sidelines, though, consider this.

I certainly wouldn't mind when I'm not actually playing.  A lot of us seem to do it unofficially anyway.  Though it should be noted in the game topic who is doing that specifically to help one person so they don't hear about the setup from someone else.

Ditto. Not that I'm a particularly awesome player, but I haven't been lynched once yet so I figure I can help out that way.

I'd be fine with helping folks. I'm not the best player, but I'm certainly not a bad one.

TIPS FOR NEWBIE SURVIVAL

Don't OMGUS beyond day 1 and don't take it that seriously on day 1, either.

Jokevote phase sucks, get over it. There IS no smooth transition from 'jokevotes' to 'seriousland', it's a slow process that doesn't really finish until late day 2. I would never put much (any?) stock in early jokevotes as far as finding scum goes. I've voted for scum there as scum. And sometimes I vote for town! I usually just pick something random no matter what side I'm on.

Don't go after tiny things, like 'he posted a useless post!' and proceed to *not let go*. I'm looking at you, Tom. I really DID think you were scum trying to get me lynched in a clumsy way. It didn't help when you proceeded to go 'hey, look, the guy who I think is scum is voting for me! HMMMMMM' no come back nexttime with a reason kthxbye.

DO go after mistakes- logical or otherwise. Scum are more likely to make a dumb mistake than town, this is always true. DO look at the logic people present and think about what they are NOT doing if they're thinking along those lines. DO lynch people who don't *have* logic. If they have the dreaded gutclaim you are fully within your rights to put no stock whatsoever in it and demand why they DO. DO lynch people who cannot type or spell properly if there are no other suitable targets. DO not lynch cops day 1. DO consider if someone is playing very differently from how they have played in previous games. And so on.

TIPS FOR SCUM SURVIVAL

Play like town. Show prejudice against lynching scumbuddies but be subtle about it UNTIL there are no investigative roles remaining. Then, show NO prejudice. Only one scum needs to survive to win and you must think for the long-term!
