Ok, I have a question for here. How the heck do you play Mafia? I usually like to play these kinda games, but I can't find a thread on how to play anywhere.

Looking at the threads, all I can see is that someone is an evil bad guy, and every "day" the town votes on who they think that is and kill them. There's gotta be more to it than that though. Can some one give a newb a hand? :)

Well, you've got the gist of it, really.

There are two sides: town (good) and scum (bad), with about three times as many people in town as on the scum side. Townies know that they themselves are town, but don't know which side anybody else is on. Scumbags know who's on their side and can talk to them freely outside of the game (through PMs, in chat, whatever). Every "day" (which usually lasts two to three real days) people vote for whoever they think is most likely to be scum, and that person is removed from the game. Then there's a "night" phase when the scum can choose one person to "kill," and the cycle repeats. Town wins when all the scum are gone, and the scum win when they make up at least 50% of the players (and therefore can control the voting).

Most games also give players special powers, which can do whatever the game moderator feels like making them do. The most common ones include the "doctor", who can protect one person per night from being killed, the "cop," who can investigate one person per night and learn their alignment, the "bulletproof," who can't be killed at night, and the "vigilante," a non-scum player who can kill one person per night.

Thank you very much! I'll have to get in on one of these games at some point. It looks fun :)

Do the themes of the game actually do anything though? Like I see a "Classical Composer" Mafia game, and a Phantom Brave Mafia Game. What exactly would that do for the game? Does it actually change any of the rules, or is it just for show and looks?

It can change the rules, as everyone learned to their dismay in my Pretty Princess Mafia. Usually, however, it doesn't. I'm just an asshole. Mainly it's just for flavor. Usually. ...I'd hope. ...unless you're me.

Usually a game signup thread will say whether or not the game requires knowledge of the theme. Most don't.

For instance I listed my Smash Bros idea as C9. C9 never does, because it always includes just 7 town, 2 scum, (1 doc and 1 cop).

The Pretty Princess mafia was off the wall, and so crazy that the mod ended up losing :|

Yeah, I actually found this on my quest to learn the rules too. (Duh, Does anyone NOT check Wikipedia first thing looking for something?)
There's a link on the bottom of that page though. Apparently, the game has its on wiki site here
I want a new game to start up soon, so I can have a shot at this.

On holiday, in America, actually.

He seemed to be getting swamped with work before that and hasn't had much time for mafia or something, and right now he's... I don't know where he is exactly. (He should've kept a travelblog.)

Just a quick question about modding... I see this sign up thread, and am wondering... Do you post there to get permission to mod, or is it a place to tell others to bugger off because you're going to host something?

If you want to mod a game, there aren't really any rules these days. You just fling up a thread and hype your game at chat, and hope people join up. Make sure you explain any strange deviations or things people should consider before joining up the game (standard game, gimmick game, desired number of people, that sort of thing.)

I'd just like to apologize to everyone involved in the current Mafia game for the way I was acting last night.  I was tired and upset about the role, and for more reasons than you've seen, but it's still no excuse.  That was an extremely immature, childish, and stupid way to handle things, and I'm very sorry to have screwed with the game like that for all involved.  I should have just dealt with it and let things work themselves out instead of just imploding like that.

I think it is understandable frustration gets the better of you at any given moment. I don't think a single accident should be regarded as being the standard for one's behaviour, so even though I hardly know you it is na deterrent to my intent to play more games with you. : D

It's cool.  This game tends to do that to people.  Personally, I'm through as a player.  I quit a while back, and decided to give it one more try.  I just don't enjoy the emotional rollercoaster.

I will, however, still mod the occasional game.  Because mods have all the real fun.  I have a devilish new concept in mind...
