I mean, the link pretty much says it all. Weird decision (skipping ahead when they could still do 5-7, all of which I would really love to see), but this would be awesome it they added in a lot of extra features. Knowing their turn times for game making now though, not sure I'd expect much to come of this.

Its just an HD Remix so don't expect much. All other HD versions of games has basically been "same game, but doesn't look like ass on an HD TV." Its no different than a Digitally remastered version of an old movie (Wizard of Oz had this for example), something that's been done for years.

Its not trashing Square-enix, just rather, when they say "Game HD", it usually means "Same game, but in HD." History has shown this to be consistent with all other versions of games. The real question is whether it will be FF10 or FF10:I (if I had to guess, the latter. Other HD games have been based on the later releases)

Also, this was revealed a while back, though the fact that Square-enix themselves are working on it instead of like TOSE or something is indeed unexpected (albeit, I think they made FF4 Collection themselves, so this isn't unprecedented?)

The big difference is that FFX probably is running on an engine that will work relatively well with a bit of tweaking and using higher resolution textures (which may still be on file from initial development?).

Expect to see a lot more HD remakes of PS2 games over PSX remakes for this very reason.

On the Pokemon thing, I think the surprising thing is that it's still on the DS. I get the feeling Nintendo is about to wash their hands of the 3DS.

There are already 15 million 3DSes out there (as a point of comparison, this is 75% what the GameCube managed over its entire life) and at this point most developers seem to be in the process of switching over to it. I doubt it's going anywhere.

In the case of Pokemon there's no precedent for a newer version of a game in the same generation (i.e. Yellow etc.) are being on a different system from the previous; I imagine it's easier to keep the Black/White engine if it's another DS game.

It surprised me as there was a few visual effects that they used in BW that felt like it was a set piece for a 3D version (camera pans most frequently). Might have just been experimenting, but I definitely felt like they were setting it up for that. Might have just been flexing their muscles in that direction to get used to that kind of camera direction without impacting anything though.

If you want to talk precendent though, there is none for the updated version having two copies either yet though unless my memory is off?

Talking main games only (no side stuff like Nobunaga's Ambition):

Gameboy: Red/Green/Blue (and Yellow? or was that GBC?)
Gameboy Color: Gold/Silver/Crystal
Gameboy Advance: Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald/FireRed/LeafGreen
DS: Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver/Black/White/Black2/White2

So yeah, we're almost at 50% more games than the previous platform. With nothing announced for their new handheld from their flagship handheld series.

Sure there's stuff like Kingdom Hearts coming up, but Square has always had a love affair with new technology. When Nintendo themselves isn't supporting their system, that's bad.

Well yeah, the DS was and is huge.

Not sure how a new Mario game and a new Mario Kart game qualify as "not supporting the system" (with another Mario, a Smash Bros., a Fire Emblem, and a Zelda coming down the pipeline, though some of these are just announcements and could conceivably of course be cancelled). Again, there's no precedent for having Pokemon jump to a new system mid-generation (Yellow was indeed classic GB), so I wouldn't read too much into Black/White 2 being for the DS.

I'd put good money on the eventual gen 6 being on the 3DS.

DS was released in Q4 2004 and Diamond/Pearl didn't get released until Q4 2006. Gamefreak takes its time to transition to a new system and has always used basically the same engine within a single generation; continuing gen 5 to the end on DS is entirely consist with their past history.

3DS is selling better than every other system combined by a good margin in Japan right now. I don't see how anyone could look at its sales and see a system in trouble, unless you expect every console to be abandoned within a few years in favor of smartphone games.

Oh it makes perfect sense given the Nintendos business model for handhelds of course. Pokemon is always late to jump to the next gen because it sells so well and they consistently have backwards compatability, so it maximises market penetration. Nintendo don't turn down the potential at an extra 5 million sales or whatever it would be if they don't take advantage of that.

Very few people aren't going to buy it because it isn't a 3DS version after all,it sells because it is Pokemon, not for any other reason. Pretty confident that they have weighed up very carefully the profits gained of doing this vs what they would gain for the people that would pick up a 3DS for the new pokemon game that is an update to the one they just put out.

They have those 3DS sales anyway when they inevitably do make one for the 3DS and they get them after the manufacturing process is refined and costs are down etc.

It makes lots of business sense, I was just stunned since that looked like it was where they were heading based off some of the visual style.
