Boss Elizabeth is NUTS. Mediarahan? Seriously? Full healing boss?
Oh, and there is that 20000 HP to start wiith, and she can force herself into awakenign mode, which reduce all damage taken to 62.5%, her durability just ascends into the impossible.
Then there is this 7500 damage command throw, with her average damage out is in the 4000s witout using any extended combos.
And her OHKO move? Think Hakumen's Akumetsu, but a projectile, yes a countering projectile!!!

Because god forbid they use characters from a variety of series, instead of just being pure mainstream, in an attempt to commemorate a company as a whole.

NxC did the exact same thing. I mean, they had characters from Forgotten Worlds (or whatever it was called), a game very few people played let alone remembered, and the characters were called 1P Warrior and 2P Warrior.

Now, what does surprise me is Frank West being paired with Hsien-ko instead of Chuck Greene. Granted, this is probably using the same logic as Hsien-ko's partner in NxC, where its "her + Zombie Killer"

I honestly think Dante+Dimitri makes less sense. Sanger coming in without Elzam is even worse.

BTW Dust World is actually well remembered among cult gamers and retro gamers. Same as Dig Dug and a few other.
But yeah NxC has its share of vague as hell stuff.

I am more surprised this time as PXZ is trying to be more mainstream than NxC had tried. Like how they use modern Shining games rather than the classical ones. Though, I am still wondering why they choose Touma/Cyril instead of Kiriya/Xecty, both popularity wise and gameplay wise.
Samething for Yuri/Estelle, when Flynn makes much more sense both popularity wise and gameplay wise.

Niu just wants the yaoi option. That said, Fighter/Healer seems like a more interesting unit than TwinYaoiKnight. Not that something like this would be influenced by a gameplay decision.

Assuming this games work like NxC or the SRW spin off, Yuri/Flynn honestly makes more sense. Consider Flynn and Yuri has an actual combination Hi-Ougi. Flynn also has this skill set that triggers base on Yuri. (gets buff if Yuri gets buff, enters Overlimit if Yuri enters Overlimit, all states up if Yuri dies etc etc). You know, Flynn's skill set actually makes more sense when he is fighting in pair.

On the otherhand, Yuri and Estelle are often the two characters chosen to represent Tales of Vesperia and make the most sense as Representatives of Vesperia as a whole. Just because you think Yuri/Flynn would be better and have reasons behind it doesn't mean they follow your train of thought.

Frankly, I definitely prefer the synergy of a team that mixes Swordplay and Magic. Using Estelle leads to "one less person with a sword", leading to more unique combo opportunities. Its bad enough we have Ryu AND Ken in the same team, leading to basically lots of back to back Shoryuken combos.

To show a parallel...

Frank West/Hsien-ko I mentioned above. Why is Hsien-ko Frank's partner when he has an obvious Partner in Chuck Greene? Makes sense to have the two Dead Rising protagonists together, especially since they worked together canonically in Case West. Yet it seems they opted for Hsien-ko, who has no relation to Frank West whatsoever other than possibly wishing to reuse the NxC joke of "Hsien-ko + Zombie Killer" (only this time, its Dead Rising, not Resident Evil.)

Or Dante/Demitri. Why not put Dante with Trish, his actual canon partner in the DMC series? THe best reason I can think of is for a funny sitcom duo between the two, given their Personalities would clash, and I can only imagine us getting introduced to both with them beating the snot out of each other, with neither getting in any sort of advantage then "Oh crap, LOTS OF MONSTERS! ...truce?" scenario.

They obviously want to do some unique team combos for interesting team synergy. Just because Flynn gets buffed when Yuri gets buffed and what not doesn't mean Flynn will actually lead to an interesting duo. Rather than just going "WHY DID THEY DO THIS!?", try to consider the kind of things they were taking into account. Having an open mind in these things is nice.

Very well, that's fair point. But..... that doesn't show how Estelle can be mroe intersting than Flynn.
First, you already overlook the fact that Flynn is a fighter/mage hybrid. Healing is the only department that she does better than Flynn, even her walls of defense trick is inferior to him. And I am saying this even counting Estelle's new techs in ToV. Then consider the skill compatbility with Yuri, Flynn's "I creat massive stun frame by with Flynn beams", works very well with Yuri's "hit as many hit as I can to access Overlimit", and works even better with Flynn's "I enter Overlimit with Yuri by Rival energy".

And your arguments doesn't explain another two of my complaints, why no Elzam with Sanger? And why Touma/Cyril of all people? Especially Touma/Cyril, their existence alone is against every argument you have listed down there.
One patterned combo loop? check. Overdone tsundere girl meets boy? Check. The two of them can be used alognside one another in their original game? check.
