Wow. I didn't think I would end up this cynical about arranged music. I definitely liked some of the tracks, but it seems my taste in music is not the same as the DL noms so far, apparently.
Cave Story Remix Project - Never Die (Cave Story) vs dasaten - Warring For The Heavens (Seiken Densetsu 3)
What the hell happened? Raiden? RAIDEN! Never Die is boring, Warring for the Heavens might be okay for a dive bar live but for a recorded version please don't use the rough cut of your guitar. At least the tune was recognizable and okay for WFTH, but fail-off.
Best of Shape - Battle #5, Photoelectron Mix (Saga Frontier) vs Faye Wong - Eyes on Me (Almighty Mix) (Final Fantasy 8)
WTF. We have the choice between generic techno and generic techno remix that takes a song I actually like (no, it's not bad) and actively makes it boring. Toss both into the pit.
Sync's Art - Necrofantasia (Perfect Cherry Blossom) vs silent - Final Fantasy 4 Tororian Love Song OC ReMix (Final Fantasy 4)
Holy crap good music from Touhou, where I had low expectations considering I wasn't really a fan of most of the Touhou stuff in the previous contest? This is actually a *good* technoy type song that doens't completely mail in the percussion and is interesting. Crushes the previous drek by a mile. The FF4 song actually has some mild merit, and I might consider paying the cover at a bar the guy was playing in, but it goes on a bit long and it isn't really my style.
Nintendo Super Famicom Game Music - Ending (Super Mario World) vs Hydain - Figaro Castle (Final Fantasy 6)
SMW tries too much here and puts on a 20s vaudeville show by the end. On the other hand I really dislike the style of singing in Figaro Castle, though the random chimes in the background are cool. This is actually easy, no way to that singing, though I suppose it's competent for what it is.
Hellion Sounds - Tsuyoteki (Actraiser) vs Jildon - One Ringed Angel (Final Fantasy 7)
Actraiser has a great beat behind it and starts solidly, but it stays there. I'm not going to fault it too much because it's still good, but it missed some potential. One Ringed Angel is worth a smile.
Disciple of the Mix - In Mem'ry of Sir Anthony (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs Mario & Zelda Big Band Live CD - SUPER MARIO 64 Opening Theme ~ Overworld Theme (Super Mario 64)
IMSA is... solid but strangely uncompelling. I like it, I like the original tune, and I like some of the changes he made... yet I'm not feelin' it as much as I should for some reason. That said, I like big band, I like brass, and I don't like the SMB piece, it's a yawner.
S.S.H. - Decisive Battle with the Looking Ones (Metal Max, Final Fantasy 6) vs Vurez - Basilisk Run (Ninja Gaiden)
Cooler. They're both competent, though nothing special. I like Basilisk Run's weirdly layed back feel.
XL Project - Fragmented Floor -sense of 6th- (Final Fantasy VI) vs DJ Orange - Harvest Hoedown (Final Fantasy 5)
This is really really easy. Fragmented Floor and the Touhou track are the best ones here, I think, and the ones I'd listen to again. Honorable mention to One Ringed Angel and the FFT In Memr'y track.
