How is it rewarding people to give them no points? This is more incentive to pass further vote measures and time limits for those that were opposed to them on penalty grounds if they miss.

It's essentially letting them go free for not playing the game at all. Hey guys I'm not participating, I'm not voting, I'm not playing the game and I'm getting away with it! Yay! That ruling is an incentive for not taking part in the discussions, and will be abused as so if it passes.

Look, I'm all for trying to get past the stumbling block we've apparently hit.  But I'd rather do that by taking a positive step forward and getting rid of the vetos than by taking a step backwards and getting rid of a part of the game I agree with, and which I am apparently not alone in liking.

So, at present I am against the motion.

Idly last minute thought. How about an effective penalty for not voting? Like, each time you vote, you get one point. Therefore, there is incentive to vote, and an effective penalty for not doing so.

K. After consideration, we'll just change it to this:

Amend Rule 203 to read: "A rule-change is adopted if and only there is a positive majority among the eligible voters."

Pretty sure people can agree on this.

307

At any time, any player may request to delay the game for a period of time equaling no more than two days. If such a vote passes, people may still post in the topic, although the voting and proposal clocks do not resume until play resumes as normal after the assigned time expires.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Basically, we chose to play what, in my mind, can be a very long game right before the holiday season, and while most of us are OFTEN able to post every day regardless, posting on, say, American Thanksgiving or Christmas/Christmas Eve can be a real chore, as this time ought to be spent with family.
So, a motion allow anyone to move the speed setting on the game from glacial to continental drift?
If you're worried about holidays, VSM, then introduce a motion that will make specific allowances for those holidays.  We can then hash out the time needed, which holidays should be included (ie, why do we observe American Thanksgiving, but not Remembrance Day or Canadian Thanksgiving?) and other things like that, as opposed to giving everyone the ability to basically stall a game that some of us already feel is moving too slowly.
One other thing, and this is far more concrete than a simple I don't like the spirit of your proposal.
Your mechanics for the proposal aren't very good.  I mean, it looks like what you're suggesting is that at any time, in any phase, anyone can call for an immediate vote to stall the game for up to two days.  So, does the game stall at the moment of the request?  Or does it stall when the vote is completed?  Or do you specify a time and place in which to place this pause?  And what do you do if the voting phase on this request finishes after the request would be finished?
Quite honestly, as worded, there's no point in anyone ever voting against a pause when they can effectively veto it by never voting against it, and therefore never giving you a complete vote to count.
And this is without even considering whether or not this thing might be snuck into counting for points.
Until you can answer these mechanical questions, and give us some guidelines as to how this will work, I must vote against proposal 307.
If we want to take something away from this, we can just change it to consider Christmas and Thanksgiving as not counting towards the counter time and leave it at that. That way, VSM can get what he wants and there won't be a way to turn this into a time-stalling measure. For any further holidays, we can just bring up more measures for this.
You know, I actually agree. This could really slow the game down quite a bit, and it's already a fairly slow game. If I changed the measure to carve out exemptions for certain holidays, and not require a voting measure, would that appeal to any of you guys?
I wouldn't mind the measure, as long as it isn't abused. The windows are shorter, anyway, so there isn't nearly as much potential for the game turning into an ice age. Not necessary, but I wouldn't disagree with it.
Play will be suspended for American Thanksgiving and the following day, as well as Christmas and Christmas Eve. After these dates are up, play will resume as normal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

And then if we need to, we can just modify it for other days.

I really don't think we need two day stretches. Just Thanksgiving and Christmas should work. If we're taking one day off, it should be enough for people. Again, this isn't mafia.

Not to mention Boxing Day is a bigger hassle than Christmas Eve anyways.
