PSG2 - Up to Amadeus Climatrol.

So now in order to be able to talk to Motavians in general and the Motavians in Roron that you get the jetscooter from in specific, you need the Motavian Ring. This is in Queris we are told. But the bridge is out! So you talk to a bunch of people in a specific order and get an item that one of them wants you to give to a person in Queris. This fixes the bridge for obvious reasons. So you go to Queris and talk to the person they wanted the item given to but you won't give it to her. Why you may ask? Because you haven't gone back to Paseo and recruited Kain since Queris unlocked him, obviously! Never mind that he isn't involved with the conversation at all after you go back and talk to her. So you take what she gives you back to the guy who gave you something to give her in the first place and get a Maruera Berry. And you take this berry to a particular Motavian (remember that you cannot yet understand these guys) and he will trade you the ring for it.

So now we meander back to the bottom of Roron and talk to the guys we couldn't talk to before and it turns out they need some Polymaterial. So we go back to the guy that wouldn't sell us any and now he does sell us some (for 10, 000 Mesata). So then we go back to the bottom of Roron and we can finally get the Jetscooter. Clearly. The most worthful added things to do. In the game.

Not to mention that Rolf still can't recognise Maruera Berries later in the game without talking to a different NPC despite having had one.

Shir is refusing to steal anything in general and the visiphone in particular. I am outraged and dismayed. Tornado takes only two turns of defence to charge, but it doesn't seem to be especially worthwhile except against things weak to Wind. Hugh's Sulphur also only takes two turns to charge but seems to do better damage than Tornado (except against things weak to wind, I guess) and also paralyses the enemies. I have heard good things about this paralysis but they remain to be seen. Haven't gotten around to seeing Kain's charge move yet.

Anna's is clearly the best ever. Removes all status effects from the party. If it took one level 1 attack to charge maybe but it takes 4 or 5 turns of defence to from memory.

I don't remember Nei getting Nares in the original...

Dreamfall - Chapter 5.  Had this sitting around for 2 years, but never installed it due to stupidity with my new computer.  Finally decided to sit down and play this as god intended - high resolution on a powerful PC on a widescreen with a PS2 controller hooked up via USB.  Nice graphics, non-existent load times.

General opinion: Pretty good!  As advertised, the adventure-gamey solve the puzzle elements are much much reduced, but I'm okay with that.  Most are pretty simple, or are fast logic and self-contained logic puzzles.  The game is more an interactive movie with snappy dialogue and a good plot, and I'm totally there.  Some reviews apparently criticized the combat for being simplistic, but it's *fun*, and provides a good light diversion to the exploration and chatting.  (Some of the interaction in the game is "try and BS this person by picking your way through a conversation tree, fall back to beating them up if you fail to bluff 'em right."  More satisfying than the adventure-game version of "you MUST chat them up right and all conversation options lead to success / request for some puzzle to be solved.)  On the downside, the stealth elements...  were mostly easy early on, but I got to the first aggravating section of them.  "Oh look bad guy is taking a boat across the underground river!  Perhaps I can follow him by going into these random catacombs with blue-creatures guarding them, and I can go solve silly puzzles!"  See, if I could just beat them all up with some staff-fu and then solve the nonsensical yet easy puzzle at my leisure, it'd be fine, but you seemingly can't, so you're stuck playing Bad Metal Gear Solid with Shifter Raven running from the unkillable monsters until they quiet down.  Yeah I ruthlessly FAQed the puzzle here, it's not worth trying to solve while dodging guards, and it had nothing to do with the plot in any way.

I will say that the plot comes at an interesting time.  I played the original The Longest Journey in college ~9 years ago, when Our Heroine April Ryan was a college student.  The sequel takes place 10 years later where the gang has grown up and gotten jobs, much like me.  (Though of course the main new perspective character is ~18, but there are 3 perspective characters a la Suiko3, so.)  I also have to wonder if the people designing the game like horror (SPOILERS, though not huge ones).  "Oh, look, an excuse to go back and visit Newport from the first game!  Oh.  Even the cool, artsy, collegey part of town has become a depraved slum, and the boarding house from the first game is now a Silent Hill style nightmare of brick and bare furnishings.  Only mattresses adorn the rooms, and the people living here are subject to cruel medical experiments and are drugged up."  ....Yeah.

Anyway: Go play the original The Longest Journey if you haven't already even if you don't like adventure games (FAQ it, though it's not nearly as cruel as most), then play Dreamfall.  It's probably in the 10 dollar bin by now, and it's a good story so far.

So is there a bonus scene or something in SO4 where Arumat gets pissed off at the rest of the party and just fucking punches/kills/shoots laser eyes/??? at everyone else because I think such a scene would completely make up for the other characters retardation up until now.

Eternal Sonata - Finished. Mostly sticking to my original impression of the game - win for the graphics, music and fighting - however going to completely agree with everyone else now that the story becomes complete and utter fail. Crescendo and Serenade just ... ugh. Ending levels Salsa, Viola, March all at L54 - final boss ran me out of reviving items, I only packed like two or three. So finished the fight off with just two characters. Party analysis/review of full battle roster later. Apparently I have a post game to do~

(though after finishing the game I reloaded a pre final save and spent ages wandering around trying to find it >_> I had a vague idea it might have something to with the missing wooden head Goro. Now at least I know exactly where to go. Thank you internet <_<)

If you play PS3 ver, remember to get killed by the last boss for a extra scene.

He sucks p. hard but in a cast like SO4's, he's easily the most tolerable member of the cast. (;´д⊂)

I tended to enjoy Reimi more, if for nothing other than mentally connecting her with Risette (also cute).

FF7: Crisis Core made me play some of this.

Mega Man 9-Downloaded this today, got through half the robot masters. Hornet Man and Jewel Man I beat with the Mega Buster, then killed Splash Woman and Plug Man with their respective weaknesses. So far it's been a fun retro game, very tough but short and good.

Quake Live-This is a beta of what basically amounts to a browser-based Quake Arena deathmatch thingy. I've only started it today but it looks very promising, if buggy at times. Mostly I've been getting my ass handed to me since I've never really done deathmatch in anything before and the utter twitchniess of it perplexes me greatly. That and I tend to get blown up as soon as I spawn.

Don't think of it as a novel. Think of it as a chance to retroactively win every argument you have ever walked away from.

Never played Quake 3 Trips?  Hope you enjoy Quake Live, it really is one of the most balanced Deathmatch games ever made (Q3, Live is pretty much Quake 3 unless I am missing something), it is incredibly twitchy but that is how DM is and Q3 is pretty much the go to game for training for reflexes and skills that apply to any other FPS to play.  I remember my little brother having a pretty frequent spin with Instagib mod on (railguns all around with unlimited ammo and instant kill shots) for reflex training when he was pretty hardcore into FPS scene.  Young guys can develop some really amazingly low reaction times and pull of some amazing shots with that.

Edit - Missed Snowfire on Dreamfall.

As a huge TLJ fan,  Dreamfall sucks man.  Get to the end and find out why pretty much.  The combat gets worse and worse as you go on.  The stealth is kind of meh (you are past the worst of it though I think).  The lockpick game from the start of the game that you got a big tutorial for never comes up again.

That said, TLJ and Dreamfall pack is pretty much worth buying from Steam if/when it is next on special (it isn't at the moment).  $25 now.  I picked it up a while back for $15 for the lot which was so very worth it.  The Longest Journey is fantastic, but for people not into Adventure I would highly reccomend FAQing it, there really is a few Soup Cans moments in it even if it isn't horribly obscure as a whole, the Soup Cans really harsh on the vibe.

MK: Chap 4 beat! That was a complete bitch.  Look, make a battle system that requires 4+ characters to be used to its full extent, that's fine...BUT DON'T KEEP LIMITING ME TO USING 3 CHARACTERS.  It severely limits your resources (no SP Regen), enemies were not scaled to compensate for this so there was quite a bit of resource drain (and they took forever to kill), and fights are like the most generic thing ever.  I know, plot reasons, but it was still a stunt I was not fond of.

That said, 6th PC get!

ToV: ...so there is an elemental dungeon macguffin spam after all.  I'll grant ToV's way of handling it is somewhat better, since...well...

"Ok, we need to go this spot now, cause we know there's a special force here!  Lets take advantage of that."

*plan goes underway, something unexpectedly awesome occurs that makes the outcome better than they hoped*

"Oh, wow, hey, lets apply this theory to the OTHER elements, we need the 3 other elements to pull this off!"

...thankfully, one of them was a complete and total tease.

"Ok, you'll give us the item, yay! Now where's the spring of...wait, you mean its CONVENIENTLY RIGHT WHERE WE'RE STANDING?"

Anyway, 3 down, 1 to go!  Yeah, elemental dungeon spams I don't like, but given ToV worked one away BEFORE you realized you were doing it, and one wasn't even a dungeon, its really just 2 filler dungeons instead of like 5.

(yes, being purposely vague to avoid spoilers.)

I actually like one of the filler dungeons because the atmosphere was nice and there was a piss easy Giganto in it.  The other one can rot in hellfire though.

I thought Reimi was a nice, cute ponytail moe and completely tolerable until the SEEDS OF HOPE speech. Also Arumat's tolerableness went down a bunch after I did some private actions.

Time to give up the next 3058945 hours of my life and do the final dungeon.

I liked her because she did the one thing I keep yelling at RPG characters to do any time they're in some form of naval setting. If the Captain becomes a whiny little bitch, the XO relieves him of command. IT WAS AMAZING.

Took over four hours to completely explore The Great Sandsea. I'm more impressed than annoyed at having a single outdoors area that large in size.

EDIT: The place is also completely optional.

MMXCM: Beat Silver Horn. That fight came damn near to killing me, although that was largely because I waited until it was almost over to use X's Hyper Mode. (I figured at first that it wouldn't be worth it to switch to fire when all of X's attacks hit his electric weakness. Uh...wrong. Also, I had no water guards equipped.) That dungeon should have been shorter, but I'm still enjoying the game. Massimo is...eh.

Digital Devil Saga - Wow. Cool story. My first MegaTen game. Looking forward to more. I think I prefer DDS1's setting more than DDS2. Dystopian warground with no explanation was slightly cooler than Nirvana. Still, the games seem to be too closely tied together to wholly separate one from the other.

Re: ToV. Glad to hear it's tolerable even to Meeple!

Re: SO4. Agreed on nearly all comments on Reimi.  Edge's emo-fest seems somewhat justified to me. Mind, I played it in Japanese, so maybe he sounded whinier in English? Just to confirm: He's angsting over having destroyed Earth, right? Not something stupid like having dreamed it all or not being as good as his rival? I'd say destroying a planet is a pretty worthwhile thing to be upset over. He does get over it eventually... *shrugs*

Re: Phantom Brave. I think this is the first time I've seen a DL member who had any distaste for PB. PB's probably my least favorite N1 game (I like it, but it's not my favorite for those same reasons), so I've always been a little confused by the reaction the DL has for it.

Has anyone played Sengoku Basara X? I've been playing some Sengoku Basara at a friend's house, but I'm interested in the fighting game version. It looks really stylish. I'm kind of hoping there's a version of the game/series that I can play on at least -one- of my systems... I really don't want to buy a Japanese PS2 when I already have 2 American ones...
