VPDS: Finished. I will now mock forever anybody who says the A ending is impossible, or even particularly difficult, on a first run.
C5 was mostly a breeze. Easy stalkers coming in ones without support, for the most part. The exception was battle 6, which had two of them backed up by Noble Vampires. I hate Noble Vampires. So much. There really wasn't much strategy to the way I finished it - just tons of revive cheese and slugging it out with the bastards. Final fight was compartmentalized enough to be simple, and the boss went down in a three-person combo (with Vali's helping out).
C6, now. Pale Flames weren't as invincible as previously believed, although I definitely needed Sap Guard if I wanted to do more than scratch them. As long as they weren't gang-attacking I could generally survive their combos at full health, and menu spells are always wimpy, so I was able to get close enough to use some offense. They can also be hit by Restrict Motion, which was a lifesaver. Beating them was slow going, but after taking out the first one (and thus putting an end to their three-part combos of doom) it wasn't really in doubt.
Then came the final fight. First off SPOILER PC is totally fucking awesome. Beat Gwendal in every stat ever, has an awesome weapon perfectly suited to the last boss, etc. If I didn't know better, I'd think he was designed as a crutch for people who didn't get enough Sin gear to stand up against Garm. But that's crazy talk.
Anyway, the strategy against Garm was simple. Hang back outside her range, buff, hit her with a three-person combo, watch as she massacred the attackers with her MT doom counter, revive, repeat until she gets close to her Heal range, four-person uberblitz. The first part went smoothly, but I may have jumped the gun on the second, launching the final attack when she was at 26,000 HP. Wouldn't have been so bad if she hadn't killed Wyl on the approach, meaning I had to revive and re-buff him right beore attacking and didn't have a spare action for Vali's Awakening. (In hindsight, I should have used Vali's instead of Might Reinforce. Durrrr.) Got a three-SC chain in, the last of which was Grim Vengeance, which killed on the final hit. YES.
So, that's that. Gameplaywise a solid, if inconsistent, challenge with C5 as the definite low point for enemy competence. Storywise....well, I don't know about the B and C endings, for obvious reasons, but I rather liked the flow of the A path. It's nice to see a main who starts out like Wyl does learn that yes, people die for shitty reasons a lot, and if that bothers you it's better to try and help them than piss and moan about how unfair life is.
Tentatively a 6 or 7 after that run. I'll probably do a replay sometime, or download a save and skip to the SG.
