Persona 4 is fun, but my chronology-obsessed tendencies kicked in and I started playing emulated Persona 1 in Japanese (yay, Snow Queen Quest). It was ridiculously annoying, so I've been abusing fast-forwarding options and turning off random encounters to slug through it.

Finished it quickly enough this way, found Ellie to be very enjoyable and now I've moved onto Persona 2 Innocent Sin. The fan translation is nothing short of amazing. Cast is surprisingly likable. Lisa's a bit of a surprise as she starts out as pretty bitchy and in some ways, offensive, as one of the few representatives of a 'foreigner' in a Japanese game... but I just got through the Muses quest and she's redeemed herself (despite singing a Yuna pop ballad). I actually kind of identified with her situation a bit, which may or may not be due to the fan translators' probably being in similar situations themselves... >.>;;

Good impression overall. The game is significantly more polished than P1, and also significantly easier so I haven't had to resort to cheating to play through it.

EP is looking like it might get a decent shot of being played through before I finish P4... >.>;;

MK2 - Ulrika C5. Man, Pepperoni loves you like a truck.

EDIT: Also, poor Sasalina. Once again. MK2's antagonist cast is a weird creature.

WA:XF - Act 2-1 as was mentioned before, but I forgot to mention something.

... Weisheit acts like that for the rest of the game? (Also, Felius backstory involves Weisheit, not a good sign)

If he's started with the "Hey Felius, let's merrrrrrrrge," schtick, then yeah, don't expect him to say anything else for the rest of the game.

Arkham Asylum: Reasonably fun so far. Just beat Bane.

so I'm gonna presume yes. Too bad, semi-interesting premise before that.

Innocent Sin is actually pretty good. Well... the story just suddenly became "LOL FF8 with HITLER!", but the battle system is still fun. I like the fusion spells and they're so very rewarding. I haven't seen Tai's Maya hype yet, so I'm guessing that's EP-only.

The turn system in this is pretty interesting too... similar to BoF4, though it's more like every character can trade turns with any character a la WAXF Sacred Slayer. Only it's a battle mechanic and requires no expenditure of resources.

Arkham: Locked up Harley, moving on to the greenhouse. As Grefter noted, the VA is generally made of win. If I ever met Mark Hamill, I think I would have to flee screaming. Riddler is pretty awesome too.

Maya hype personality-wise? Latter IS/dialog choices in EP, not sure how well the Innocent Sin patch did on making her Mrs. Cheerful Except Under Pressure.

Gameplay wise? She likes having the IS form available for its final persona's abilities - chibi-Nate/Ellen that way. P2EP form gets Maia Custom early which makes her dominant for a long while (+stat customization); that plus two other unique Personas makes that her better ingame form, IIRC. (NO ONE RAISES MAGIC IN EP ASIDE FROM ELLEN. AUGH.)

EDIT: Also... yeah, comparison to BoF4 isn't entirely inaccurate. My only note is that Agi is useful in P2 series just for the whole "actually can doubleturn" thing.

IS translation patch is brilliant. Very professional work. Takes out Maya's Engrish and makes it comprehensible, which saddens me a bit, but I understand why they did it. She comes across as Ms. Cheerful without being a ditz though (except perhaps during the Zeppelin scene, but that was genuinely amusing).

Yeah, Maya personality-hype is understandable. I just haven't seen her dominate the game yet. She's just a good support character, really.

Sounds like her IS form, yeah. She's not dominant in game there. EP... being the main character changes that.

Pokemon Heart Gold: 40+ hours logged in, got my sixteenth badge a while back, spent time testing assorted things like high level Pickup. Figured it's about time to make some comments about the game.

Well... it's a GSC remake. To a large extent, we all knew what we were getting coming into this. There were four major complaints I had about the original games:

1. Johto as a region was tiny and lacking in dungeons and things to do compared to all the other regions, presumably to make room for a second region on the cart. This was especially insulting since...
2. Kanto was crippled, had all the routes shortened and almost every dungeon removed entirely, with only some bland gym battles against low levelled bosses.
3. Really low levels all-around, with pathetically gym leaders outside of Whitney and Clair (and Blue I guess) and by far the worst E4 in the series.
4. Johto was filled to the brim with gen 1 Pokemon, with a lot of gen 2 stuff either held to aftergame only or requiring really obscure methods like swarms.

How did the address these issues? The answer, with one exception, is: sorta.

-A Safari Zone was added west of Cianwood, with a few short routes and caves leading up to it. Goldenrod also got a GTS and a building for the new Pokethlon minigame. Not much, but Safari Zone and Pokethlon are decent time wasters at least.

-Pokemon locations are almost identical to Gold/Silver; annoyingly, the Crystal modifications were ignored, despite almost everything else from Crystal getting in (even the Suicune/Eusine plot). HOWEVER, the new areas provide a bit of saving grace; Misdreavus, Murkrow, and Larvitar can be found in the Safari Zone, and there's a small cave with wild Misdreavus and Steelix. Houndour is in the Safari Zone as well, but I'm not sure you can get it before the E4. Sneasel and Slugma seem screwed.

Also, on a semi-related note you can now get Fire/Water/Thunder/Leaf Stones reliably from the Pokethlon, so using stuff like Starmie or Arcanine is feasible now. Dragon Scale, King's Rock, and Metal Coat are also there, though strangely not Up-Grade.

-Wild Pokemon and random trainers still have total crap for levels. However, Falkner and Bugsy got big level gains and are now severely overlevelled and have real TM moves this time (Roost and U-turn). You now need very specific Pokemon or specific strategies to beat them, making them some of the best bosses in the entire series instead of the worst. Whitney and Clair are still good, and the second rival battle now throws a level 18 stage two starter at you right after the second gym, which caught me flat-footed; turns out a L14 Spearow is not an effective answer to a L18 Bayleef.

-Kanto is the one thing they really fixed up well, with three dungeons (Viridian Forest, Seafoam Islands, Cerulean Cave) restored to full length. The routes are longer and have more trainers to face now, and there's plenty of legendaries added for you to catch, though some of the locations are kinda silly (Zapdos right outside the rebuild Power Plant, really? <_<). Also, all the Kanto gym leaders got a significant level bump to higher than E4 levels now, the gyms were redesigned and all have underlings now, and all give out TMs, though some are kinda silly for that late in the game. The aftergame in general is pretty eventful now, with 16 gym leaders to rematch and a souped up Elite Four and an even higher levelled Red to top it off as the ultimate final boss.

The new music remixes are nice, at least by Pokemon standards. Some of the graphics that they clearly focused on are really nice, like the golden leaves on the path to Tin Tower or the 3D perspective at the top of Celadon Mansion. Having a touchscreen for all the menus is nice; running shoes that you can permanently toggle on is nicer. The Pokemon following you on screen looks really awesome with the right Pokemon, like Raikou. Having the Battle Frontier be an exact copy/paste of the Platinum one is kinda dumb, but better than nothing (or the Crystal Battle Tower, which was worse than nothing!) I suppose.

As for my team, I wasn't sure where the Pokemon or TMs and really wanted to rush to experiment with specific game elements (i.e. the Safari Zone) were so I opted for a smaller, legendary one to count on overlevelling to make things easier; I basically ran 3-4 Pokemon for almost the entire game. You might have noticed that I almost completetely stopped commenting on boss difficulty after a while; this is because my levels were too high after a certain point to give any meaningful commentary.

Feraligatr - Definately the most diverse of the starters now, with Ice Fang and Crunch  (and Superpower really late) by level, physical Waterfall, and TM options like Swords Dance, Dragon Claw, and Earthquake. Averagish speed and special defense hurt it against some special attacking bosses though. Physical STAB is nice, but keep in mind that Waterfall's power is only okay unboosted and it's a bit slow to sweep with Swords Dance, even in-game.

Golem - Easily the earlygame MVP, with complete type advantage over the first three gyms. Remember how I mentioned 'specific Pokemon' for Falkner and Bugsy? Yeah, Geodude is one of them (along with Onix!), although you'll probably need to grind it to get Rock Throw in time for Falkner. Kinda fades later on in the game, but good enough for me to keep using it through endgame, which I haven't done in a long time with the Geodude line.

Spearow - Used to plug an otherwise gaping weakness to Grass, although it let me down in the aforementioned Rival fight. Then again, looking at Pidgey that has even less damage, so eh. Aerial Ace at level 17 or so helps, but I dumped it when I got Entei.

Raikou - Caught the roamers with traded Master Balls. Raikou was awesome throughout the game and made fantastic use of the Choice Specs found at Lake of Rage, even with basically just two moves (Thunderbolt+Shadow Ball). It was so overlevelled at first I barely used it until Feraligatr and Golem caught up, but having the extra insurance certain didn't hurt.

Entei - Joining with Flamethrower is nice. Unfortunately it's redundant with Ho-oh, so it basically got phazed out around the time it stopped being overlevelled.

Ho-oh - It and Lugia getting Recover at 71 is -_- now; thankfully I didn't need the Roost TM for anything else. Sacred Fire is really damned awesome against bosses, even resisted, but the PP is an issue. I opted for Fly for the second STAB over Brave Bird and used Extrasensory in the last slot for the massive PP, though running off the weaker attack stat definately hurts at times. Still completely unfair in-game against anything that doesn't have strong Rock damage.

Feraligatr, Raikou, and Ho-oh were the main things I wanted to use, as I'll only be doing a conventional run once in English and have a team planned out already. I traded over a spare high level Gardevoir over late into Kanto to cover a minor team weakness to Lanturn and Quagsire, but haven't used it much. The downside to this makeshift team is that I don't really feel much attachment to it, so I haven't felt like doing any gym leader rematches or a strengthed E4 run or Red yet, despite getting the last gym badge over a week ago. Instead I've been doing stuff like testing Pickup, breeding Extremespeed Dratinis, and planning for a Pokeniu mk II run when the games get released in English.

SOOO I picked FF7 back up for a bit. Got a Vincent, ran through Nibble Mountains, got a Cid and a Tiny Bronco. Palmer isn't quite as awful when your highest HP character is only 1200. And maybe I was unlucky, but was that a tad more evasion than the average enemy?

Its higher than your average enemy, but its not as high as 30%.  I fought him not long ago, using noting but basic physicals, and stated to chat that its definitely not THAT impressive, and not significant enough, only standing out cause enemies suck at evade.  Tonfa's NENENI challenge didn't recognize at the time that levels do play an important role in evasion (or at least, Dexterity does, as its Your Dex vs. Enemy Dex as part of the Evade algorithms, something low levels will emphasize!)

Well, as I kinda implied with my HP, my levels were lowish. I think 27 for Cloud, 25-26 for Yuffie and Cait (haha best party ever). Stat topic says average HP is 1400 there, so I figure everyone's got a few levels on me at least.

What's wrong with Yuffie and Cait Sith now <_<?  One has long range weapons, let alone one of the best Ultimates, the other beats Vincent in every stat and has non-fail limits!

Honestly can't say I remember levels there, though, HP might not be 100% level related; it could be related to what Materia being equipped.  Stat topic, I had only like only one HP Plus Materia equipped the entire game, I think, as to not make bosses look pathetic but also so my HP didn't look too horrible.

Sorry, when I said "about 30%", I meant that his Pevade stat is exactly 30.  For most purposes this is a fairly literal stat in FFVII, but obviously levels and innate hit rates are still calculated and I'm far too lazy to pull up the BMG and crunch it out for assumed levels and weapons vs Palmer >.>

Okay, people like Yuffie at least.

Well I haven't found any HP Plus yet, and Cait's HP is waaay low because I strapped most of my magic to him. Actually, the high base HP and decent magic is why I'm doing so. Cloud, meanwhile, has the Cover/Counter combo (with a few others), and Yuffie's got E Skills for now.

Put SotN on my 360. I gotta be honest, I had to take regular breaks because I had to stop and wave my hand at the sky while I screamed "WHY CAN'T YOU BE THIS GREAT, GOD?"

I see it as less than and more settling the eternal question of if God directly intervenes in mortal works.

---

Megaman X:

Replayed,  used Buster only. MMX has always been a bit too easy but it's still so damned much fun that it makes up for it.  Buster only doesn't make it that much harder, though I've never used subweapons much anyway. Game's a 9/10 to me on review? It holds up superbly well. The music the best MM OST since MM2 and rivals it for best ever. The only possible flaw is that it's a bit short.

Megaman 2:

Replayed this after MMX to compare and contrast. It's so easy because I've played it twenty gazillion times but it's all aces across the board. 10/10, possibly the best NES action game, established a franchise, ect. Would play again and again and again. There's little else to say.

Rockman No Constancy:

So I felt like more Megaman action. I don't like most Megaman hacks, few hackers have any sense of level design. RnC is the exception that proves the rule. Everything is well designed with a lack of cheap situations. The gameplay is challenging throughout but highly manageable, rewarding practice. The OST is also very good and draws on myriad sources.  It's pretty much a top tier Megaman game, the first time I've been able to call a hack that.

I worked on the Hard Mode patch of RnC after that. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK.

Final Fantasy: PSP

I've been replaying this when I'm bored. I've reached the Lifespring Grotto. My party is a Thief/Red Mage/Black Mage/Black Belt. I miss a White Mage only for the Soul of Chaos bosses, otherwise it's all cake.  Speaking of, using maps and an FAQ speeds up the Soul of Chaos about fifty-fold. It's still a grind; really, do we need to fight the same crummy, low reward fights over and over and over? Could you have at least made the randoms better and better rewarding? Anyway, I'm on floor 13 of Lifespring Grotto now. I'm going to try and take out Shinryuu, though I know this is going to take a lot of luck. My only group healing is Heal from a Healing Staff, this simply can't keep up with Shinryuu's offense.
