I'm playing Valkyria Chronicles plus some sickeningly cute mmo that's making cavities in my soul.

And some of you guys are playing Perfect World? Good luck. @_@

I'm imagining the actual Schneizel typing this. It feels my soul with a strange warmth.

EDIT: Meant to say fills but... you know... feels is probably more appropriate.

Also, booted up Persona 4 on a friend's PS2 since I left mine at college. Juuust got third party member. Happy with the game so far. Manual control makes me happy.

I've also been playing P4. Just unlocked Void Quest, which looks to be as awesome as purported here on the forums. This game is... so much better than P3 in every way. Kanji and Teddie rule.

And yet you are going to do them all ASAP because of the rewards.  If you are going to do -all- of them and the aftergame Snow, I highly suggest you do the steal dual tech from robot chick (Orgulla?) thing to get the points for Matthews GS.  It is quickest and breaks game better.  It is boring as fuck, but getting that GS done any other way is just arghlefuck.

Fallout 3 - Much better without Durability, but I kind of finished the Wasteland Guide quest which was my main motivator for what to do, so just kind of doing random stuff and generally being distracted.  Sometimes doing the main plot, but not really focussed on it. Thought there was supposed to be only one Behemoth in the game and if there is I am actually suprised that it is really just a scripted sequence you take part in, not a giant boss fight.
NO MORE POKEMON - Meeplelard.

Also playing P4! Just unlocked the MANLINESS CENTAR. Already seen the final boss of this area, so I know what to look forward to (my friend's playing as well, he just beat it a few game days ago).

Main comments: I like the S. Links in this a lot more, as well as just the dialogue in general. I just B.S.'d through most dialogue in P3, but my friend and I both crack up at some of the random comments in this. Really pretty silly.

Yukiko's... probably my favorite PC cast member thus far? Has a sense of humor, unlike cheerfully confused Yosuke/cannonball Chie.  Also has resources of whoa and deep.

The game paces far better in general as well; the main pacing issues are rainy days/Fridays from what I've seen. But Fridays get some stuff, so.

Final Fantasy XII: Got the neccesite or whatever I needed from what's-his-name tomb. Also went to the masked people village and then to the viera village. Not surprisingly, the viera did turn out to be asses. They also were tree dwelling creatures. A rename to elf is in order.

I've abandoned the plans of getting any hunts as they appear. Originally I thought they were a way to prepare for the upcoming challenge in a more fun way than grinding. This turned out not to be the case as they often are harder to beat than the upcoming boss.

This is where I am in the game. I'm stuck on the next boss you fight after leaving the Viera village, some Wyrm. I just kinda left the game alone for a while, and never picked it back up after. I just REALLY don't feel like grinding up for a few extra levels/loot...

That boss is a whore. I had to blow a lot of stuff on it, and afterwards quit the game. >_> Mostly because I thought the storyline was going downhill something fierce.

Guitar Hero whatever tour - Yeah we finally caved and picked up a GH game in my familly.  It is pretty fun but frustrating for mixed reasons.  Picked up World Tour and GH3 because I thought the world tour track list was worse than it actually was.  No real loss though.  We are just playing on Easy and the challenge of the songs is a bit hit and miss sometimes.  There is a set where you play 3 Tool songs in a row, Parabola, Schism and then Vicarious if I remember correctly.  My little brother did it, almost perfected Parabola first time playing it, barely scraped through Schism cause it had shit all over the freaking place pretty fast, then Vicarious was back to pretty easy again.  Weird, but whatever, the Tool stage is totally awesome and it is three great songs.

Schism is damned hard, even on the Medium difficulty that I play.

GH4:  About 80% of songs on bass complete.  Have 5 (edit: 10 now) 100 percents to my credit now.  My kid says I'm the virtuoso of Medium difficulty.  I think he's being facetious.

P4:  Beat Dr. Frankenfurter and New Age Retro Hippie in one day each, thanks to my foxy friend.  Have quite a few S. Links maxed, and way too many girlfriends.  >_> <_<

Are you playing all of them, or do you sim? I try to play the ones that look competitive, and I sim anything if I'm obviously better than the CPU or if the CPU is obviously better than me.

A 79 win season is still impressive either way.

I played everything except for like... games against the Thunder or the Wizards, pretty much.

Yeah, I find it odd that the game warns you *after* you've maxed out the S. Link... I have this odd feeling Mitsuru's going to show up at the end of the game and "punish" me for being a manwhore.

I really am that predictable, ain't I. Yeah, I just picked up a FAQ and started abusing the fuck out of it to get those damned things and rake in the shiny. XS2's designers were asses with the GS campaign, but goddamn if the stuff they give you isn't good. It's like an encouragement to work against Darwin. GS Campaign is XS2's rendition of social service for the legally retarded - which, in this case, equals pretty much the totality of the universe's NPCs.

That is one thing I'll say for the GS.  XS had a sort of undercurrent of "yeah, basically the masses of the universe are worthless leeches too stunted by technology to be worth two shits", and the GS Campaign illustrated this in gameplay terms to an astonishingly thorough degree.
(Even if this wasn't intentional, it's not like the overall themes of XS weren't misanthropic to a similar degree anyway)

VC: So Maximilian was all "My country's penis is bigger than your country's penis," and we were like "no wai." We had to lay the smack down on that motherfucker, yo.

Yeah, game finished. End time was ~44 hours, levels were 16 for Scouts and Shocktroopers, 15 for Lancers/Engineers/Snipers. Beat it without any fatalities! ...Though there were a few PCs I never got, I can tell that much even without a FAQ. Every PC has a set number of other PCs that they like, and I saw a few names listed in this field that never joined my army. I'm pretty sure recruitment is based at least in part on how much you use the people who apparently like your possible future recruits. So I tried focusing on that latter group near the end of the game, but the last three bastards never showed up. Unpatriotic swine!

Anywho, final party was: Welkin/Zaka/Alicia/Rosie/Vyse/Jane/Largo/Theold/Karl/Cezary (though Cezary got fragged and replaced by Marina after the first turn). Welkin/Zaka are forced, Rosie/Alicia/Largo are no-brainers because they're immune to permadeath and also give you extra actions per turn, Vyse/Jane because they're awesome and high level troopers are damn near unkillable, Theold was only around because he was still missing one of his personal potentials and including people in plot battles seems to be the best way to unlock those, sorta the same for Karl since he was linked to one of the mooks I hadn't recruited yet (and hey, someone has to be there to fix the tanks--though I'd rather it be Herbert, since the lazy bastard amuses me), Cezary was there because I decided to throw a sniper in on a whim (in some battles, they're useless, in others, godly. They turned out to have a OHKO on an annoying obstacle on the other side of the field in the last battle. Nice) and he's got the snarkiest attitude of the lot.

The tanks were actually pretty useless in the final battle. You have to target a variety of spindly objects off in the distance, and the tanks' aim is dreadful even when they're accurised for that stat. You don't snipe with a cannon. I used them as barricades to protect the sniper and the engineer from interception fire. Lancers shut down the towers close to the base, but I couldn't rely on 'em for much else. Rosie/Jane/Vyse were the kill squad here, took out the boss in one turn once he was actually vulnerable (well, okay, two turns--the bastard teleported away and regened everything once he hit half HP, but my second attempt at cornering him took him down from full).

~

So, final verdict on the game? Pretty damn good. It's not perfect, but it does enough things very well for me to ignore the various WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot details. The Pros:

-Combat. Is a tad simplistic, but fun and made greatly immersive by the following points.

-Setting/flavor. You are Lichtenstein versus the world. Actually, maybe Israel's more apt given Gallia's universal conscription and singularly hazardous location. But yeah, basically 1930's Europe, visuals ape this evocatively (EDIT: rereading this, I wonder what I was thinking. The visuals clearly pull from the WWI-era. Which is still cool, of course!), supernatural Valkyrur stuff is there in the background but not getting in the way for most of the game. Add in that it always feels like you're working as part of a whole rather than The Brave Young Hero Saving the World (I.E., Lichtenstein). I mean, sure, you're responsible for turning the tide at a lot of crucial moments, but the newspaper articles frequently mention other units and operations. It's like, whoa, an RPG where the hero isn't the only one trying to Do the Right Thing (he just happens to be the best at it).

-VA. Not so much in regard to the main characters (not that they're bad or anything) but more because it does a lot to make the dozens of mooks you can recruit endearing. The bulk of 'em leave more of an impression than your usual batch of suikoscrubs, I feel confident saying that much. Vyse's machinegun laugh is perfect, Catherine's accent is sexy, etcetera. This is pretty cool considering the fact that all of these goons can be permakilled.

The Cons?

-Male and female leads are fairly bland. The supporting cast is pretty cool, though. VEDGE-TA-BULLS.

-Sceneskip. Why is it only available for the FMV sequences and not the text ones? Definite oversight on Sega's part.

-Anything else I might note here is pretty small-scale. Enemies sneaking in hits before you can press the fire button is annoying sometimes, but I know I was glad whenever my soldiers did it, so yeah. Would be hypocritical of me to bitch about it. It's only really irritating when said enemy has an Attack Down weapon, because all status hitrates are 100% and this means that you're going to be dealing one damage per shot. Fortunately, that only shows up in a couple maps. Otherwise...well, you being able to access headquarters when it should be inaccessible for plot reasons was a little silly, but it beats the hell out of locking out crucial gameplay features at an inopportune time.

8-9/10 overall? Enjoyed it a lot, may thrash a new game+ some day. More people need to play it, but more people would need PS3s and that alone is not an innately good thing.

~

Also, random moment I wanted to preserve which didn't fit anywhere else in the post: Jaeger shouting "This fight's just getting started!" when you blow the armor off his tank. Immediately thereafter, Largo ran behind him and two-shotted it. Bwahaha.

EDIT: Uh. I think Pyro wanted me to stat-topic this thing. It's...theoretically possible, for all that I'd have to massacre my own soldiers to be sure how defense works (there's no way to view enemy stats).

P4- Hm.  So, the final (plot) battle lacks the raw emotional punch of P3's but is executed a lot better.  Or I'm just mildly impressed by mimicing gameplay mechanics for it, either way.

Anyway, not a lot to say that hasn't been said about the game.  In every relevant way it's P3+, with... basically the sole exception of the above note.  It's worth noting that the main murder plot is a bit slow and predictable, but we're contrasting it with a game that barely had a central narrative.  Still fun, as long as you remember that some bumbling from teenages is going to happen.  beyond that, changes I'll take a minute to hype: PCs as the relevant S.Links (why didn't P3 do this?) and ability to reenter dungeons at the floor you left (makes the game just... so much more playable and friendly, despite probably being harder overall due to fewer weakness/knock down being less broken/early bosses being nastier).

Cast!

All names presented in Arcana form.  Take that spoilers!

Fool/World- Honestly, him being a silent main is as dumb as Freyjadour being one.  Fuck "silent main is traditional".  Fuck it hard.
High Godlike.  Might be statusable?  That's about it, although I suppose if you're not keen on skill inheritance the really good bosses would have the variety to get him.  Or high class NE damage.  Hey, less broken than Minato!

Magician- Well rounded.  Probably could have used more "scene where Magician makes an ass of himself and gets Galactic Punted" but eh.
Middle.  Never left the party, because Dekaja is handy utility but not worth the effort of ensuring it's passed on in Fusions and wind (at least to me) seemed like the safest overall element in terms of weaknesses and resists.  But that stuff doesn't translate in DL terms so he's just a somewhat speedy slugger.  Solid at that though.

Chariot- Galactic... PAUNT!!
... what?
I dunno why but her gimmick of blurting things out was really endearing to me.  And generally got funny lines in general.  Or maybe it's weird to think talking about how your smell makes her comfortable is funny.
Middle, most likely.  Stopped using her shortly before the midgame in favor of a second healer, but her magic damage isn't so hot.  Meaning that unless Tarukaja bumps her up to OHKO territory she can't maintain pressure well at all.
Edit: Power Charge.  Right.  Still not awesome (probably loses to an average damage dealer faster than her, say) but gives her some capacity to apply pressure at least.

Priestess- Ditzy Hyena.  Kinda found the end of her character arc unsatisfying.
Heavy/Middle?  without seeing a damage curve it's hard to be sure, but generally good on damage, healing, and deep resources.  retaining a weakness sucks but it's Ice, not normally a DL-relevant one.

Emperor- Didn't talk much, but tended to steal scenes when he did.  Well, aside from the ones where he was off balance, but when he's on top of things he lays out verbal smackdown and it's nice.  Skipped out on his S.Link though.
Low Heavy.  Never actually used him, but the HP looks damned good and the offense, guessing based on stat build, should be mean.

Lovers- Only really made one impression.  But that impression was King's Game.  Yeah.
Godlike  ... just kidding.

Star- A-ri-su~
(More seriously, huge scene stealer, serious character arc is kinda blah but it doesn't matter.  A-ri-su~)
Low Middle.  See Priestess.  Make that "Ice" an "Electric", and the remaining text about how much being weak to lightning sucks in the DL.  Ouch.  That said, does have Matarukaja as an option against fellow healers, which is probably something.

Fortune- Weird.  Missed the S.Link here, sadly (too little time ;_;), so not super-inclined to say more.
Middle or Heavy.  Depends on whether or not Hamaon/Mudoon with relevant boosts have decided to be good or not.  Strongly suspect that Mind Charge'd Megidolaon is enough damage to heal-lock with a physical, too.  But needs more stat topic to say more.

Bosses by dungeon.  Skipping the first two, they really suck and I don't remember them.

Castle- Low Heavy.  Durable enough to get away with high-3HKO level damage, loses to healers but that sort of thing happens.

Bathhouse- Low Heavy.  Basically the same boss behind the support, aside from the element of the damage.

Strip Club mk 1- High Middle?  Loses that durability thing, but damage is still in the same range but now in multiple flavors.

"" "" mk 2- Wanna say High Heavy.  Seems like it had Rakunda, which gave it a nice solid 2HKO.  Or overkill with Super Telegraphed Attack, but ymmv there.  Probably the most overall durable boss in the game

Void Quest- Godlike on design alone.  That's probably actually accurate though, the damage isn't great but adds up, particularly due to dual-act, and honestly if you're not healing you're probably screwed.

Secret Base- Heavy?  I'm not totally sure because I forget what it can and can't use without a Once More turn, but I recall Heat Riser and Mind Charge being in that skillset somewhere.

Heaven- Godlike.  Quad Convergence may be a great way to get owned by Makarakarn in-game, but in the DL it's a great way to bust out OHKO damage for three turns while shutting down non-versatile mages.

Magatsu mk 1- High Middle?  I feel like I might not being giving his durability enough credit; sure, the damage sucks once Heat Riser runs out (and isn't awesome with it) but he's got time.  I don't think I ever saw the ID hit anything either, but he didn't use it too much.

"" "" mk 2- Godlike.  Fog of Buffing's a nice trick, and Almighty damage to use it with keeps spoilers away.  Low on variety but what can ya do.

Final Doom Boss- Godlike.  Form chaining isn't really super-relevant here even, durability feels lower than the preceeding boss but the damage is much steadier, borderline OHKO every turn if I'm not mistaken?  Like I let 'em get non-Debilitated turns >.>

Anyways!  Easy 8/10, would recommend even to people that were leery of P3 despite so many shared traits.

ToS2:  Finished, got the Good ending.  Even on Hard, the game never got all that difficult.  The original cast got de-sucked at the end with the addition of their endgame ToS gear that had actually useful passives on it, but it still wasn't enough to make me want to sub out one of my monsters for them.  Locked levels kinda suck like that.  As for the monsters, class changed the Fenrir to an Orion (Heavy melee with some status tricks, and could swap it's basic attacks to either Ice or Light as needed) and got my Neries promoted to a Rusalka (Heavy caster with a large pile of MT stat buffs on the side, also tossed her the healing books, though she didn't use them all that often).  If I hadn't pretty much skipped most of the side quests for the last couple of chapters I likely would have replaced the Orion with the tier four bear I was preparing on the side, as the Orion's lvl 100 cap would have eventually limited it's usefulness(each tier has it's own level cap, and wolves don't have access to a fourth tier along any of their evo paths).

Game is mostly VA'd, including the skits, and the voices for the returning cast are either the same, or sound like they'd aged a couple of years.  Except Zelos, he sounded like he'd gotten punched in the throat at some point... which, seeing as it's him, is entirely likely.

Combat...  Free Run off the bat, and it's actually somewhat balanced this time around.  Getting hit while free-running is an automatic crit, and between spells generally coming out faster once cast and melee attacks usually having a wider AoE...  it's still powerful, but it's not the ticket to nigh-invulnerability like it was in TotA.  They also buffed Defend(preformed automatically if you're not in free run/taking an action, and you don't need to use a special version to block spells), so sometimes it's better to take the hit rather than trying to run out of it.  As for the monsters, while you can't directly control them(though you can queue up spells for the casters), the vastly superior stats make them invaluable to have around.

While Emil's far better at it, Marta's not entirely helpless in melee, though she does have this annoying bit of lag on the first hit of her combos.

At any rate, time to resume the search for Persona 4.  Will hopefully pick up a copy in the next couple of days.  And I'd better hurry, lest I fall to the temptation of replaying the first ToS again >.>

Fallout 3 - So now that I have a good supply of fusion things for that special palsma rifle Super Mutants and Talon Mercs are dying much much easier.  Thankfully now that I am hitting up central DC pretty hard and they are in swarms.  It is like the game is balanced around you using the special weapons, it looks like they are roughly twice as strong as regular versions of the weapons.  It is pretty dumb.  My little brother played through the whole game without finding any it seems, while I am going out of my way to FAQ it up and get a chunk of them.  Level 15 now I think (16 maybe) and pretty much have maxed out or am a bobble head away from maxing out the skills I considered my primary ones.  Repair and Lockpick both maxed, Repair is still a good skill even without durability, so it is pretty standard best in game methinks.  Got Science and Medicine up high enough to get Cyborg since I had them both up pretty high anyway and Cyborg is pretty much a bonus 4 Perks rolled into one if you meet the skill checks, both are solid skills anyway.  Picklock is kind of meh, but I like to open things.  Working on building up Small Guns since I still use them most of the time in spite of Energy Weapons focus and I don't really have anything else to spend points on.

Energy Weapons is bah.  Good weapon available for it relaively early, but while Laser Pistol is available really early, ignoring durabullshit system Laser Pistol is fucking pathetic.  Where the fuck is like Plasma Pistol or something to make the jump from Laser Pistol to something bigger?  And you will have limited use of that good weapon due to cost restrictions on the repairs/ammo and general ammo availability until a bit later.  I am pretty torn on this value.  If you were to just go Small Guns pure through the whole game I can totally see it working, especially if you made a run for one of the special guns ASAP (Not sure which one is easiest to get, most of them do seem to be situated in or somewhere you ahve to go through Central DC to get, so they are tough areas to do when you aren't established yet.

Also, Perks fucking suck in this game.  Like more than they do in Fallout 1 and 2 by miles.  Skill perks actually look vaguely enticing at times, but that said I have taken both the one hander and the 2 hander bonus to VATS things and a few other things that are kind of redundant, but it really doesn't matter because you have so many perks and there is so little that is even worth bothering with that it is just meh, may as well.  Like they are bad enough that I took 20% boost to my Stimpacks healing.  Stimpacks are in massive abundance, I carry around like 60 of the things and I can use them whenever I want from the menu with no time passing, so long as I have a supply of them and am not reloading, functionally immortal.  And generally speaking the combat is somehow still more broken than Fallout 1 and 2, it costs you NOTHING to go into the menus to use Stims.  At least Fallout it had to like be your turn and you had to spend AP to do it >_>  This is pretty much "Don't be reloading and don't be ragdolled around by explosions".

Edit - I neglect to mention though that the decent perks are solid and stack amazingly well.  With a pistol of some kind I have 95% chance to hit things in the head from a fairly mind boggling range in VATS.  Problem being while the bullt time auto shooting is amazingly effective and hands down the best way to deal with enemies, in large fire fights it is probably 1/4 of your attack time if you don't play duck and cover while waiting for AP to regen (You pretty much pick off weak targets or do clean up while waiting for it to regen)..  So while some of those perks are really good at what they do, their application is far weaker than you would expect.

Final Fantasy XII: Went to the mines, beat Tiamat and then rescued an elf. The elves stopped acting hostile and instead toke on a more neutral attitude after that. Most other people however starts with the neutral attitude and then become friendly when you help them, so the elves are still asses.

Shortly thereafter I fought &#¤%. &#¤% uses an inflict a crapload of statuses move and that's in a game where issuing commands are harder than normal due to it relying on gambits doing most of the work. The strategy involved having one melee fighter equipped with Shielded Armor who tanks and let the others use ranged weapons so that they are at a safe distance (I just let Larsa die since he wasted to much healing.) Then I used Esuna and a Handkerchief on the tank whenever &#¤% used it's status move.

As a general suggestion, I believe you're far enough in the game to get access to the Nihopaloa (It's an accessory that reverses the effects of all items) from the Hunter Shop in Rabanastre which can have very devastating effects on Marks and Bosses if you combine it with a Remedy.

Oh, so that's where the Ranger Mirror Item concept came from.

MK: Just got to Ch. 9, Grow Books have gotten about 25% fatter. Only Vayne/Anna have been able to pay for everything unlocked thus far (Pamela would, except she has the bottom-left unlocked which has two ~15k ones. Ahahah.

You mean the boss you can skip.

MK - Chapter 10. Last chapter had yet another cool boss fight, yay. Not much else to add, except to marvel at the concept of Tai's Jess/Nikki having AP issues. Unless they have significantly more of their books unlocked than Vayne/Anna?
