Braid.

Just... Braid.

Wow.

Great fun, now I want to try for the 8-stars ending.

It was really nice to see someone tell a story that could only work in the 'video game' medium. Braid relies heavily on Mario 1's already quirky-world to subvert the aesthetics for the purpose of the ... the ... I want to call it a 'narrative' but I'm not sure it fits...

If JRPGs are fantasy novels and FPSs are action movies, Braid is a poem written through a video game.

Braid.

Just... Braid.

Wow.

I was going to comment on how much it sucks that Braid is 360 only, but then I checked Wikipedia and saw that a PC version is coming out within a month or so. Yay.

Nothing - Yeah, pretty much. Been batting around Summon Night Swordcraft Story 2 some, but mainly just been either internet surfing or doing homework. Can't seem to engage in any long-term projects lately.

DMC4: Just beat Agnus, this time involving 100% more Demonic Briefcases and Exploding Flamenco Dancing.

The scene before that was just win on so many levels.  Ok, look, I know; this is DMC, let alone one that takes notes from DMC3 in terms of how to make Dante truly awesome, so yes, I expect scenes to be awesome...

But I don't expect Dante to be doing stuff like...well...they say actions speak louder than words so...

(Mild spoilers of course, but describing the scene doesn't do it justice)

Got Max back finally! (mini yay!) Shame he can't pilot Guld's Valkyrie.

To anyone that has played the game: Fatman is awesome.

and are the is the DX and GX Gundams.

The nine pilots I have been using so far for these last couple of maps have been....

Trowa (he gets Focus)
Max
Kamille
Amuro
Char
Kid
Hyouma
Masaki
Garrod

Kou and Tetsuya have been joining in on the fun whenever there is extra space. Everyone else is pretty much just consuming all the food on the ships while they kick supreme ass.

Map 24 was just finished; 20 skill points. Saw Sanger. Was going to kick his ass, but he ran away like a little bitch.

More to come, next issue.

FF1: Two Fiends down, characters upgraded (though not necessarily in that order).

Citadel of Trials first. Easy, and lets me itemcast my way through the following dungeons (HEAL STAFF YES).

Ice Cave: Is still made of rape. I had four resets here. FOUR. It went like this--

Attempt 1, floor 4: Surprised by four dark wizards, who promptly spam Fire 3 (which damn near 2HKOs the party).

Cid: ...

Attempt 2, floor 4: Surprised by four dark wizards, who promptly spam Fire 3 and mass ID the survivors.

Cid: ......

Attempt 3, floor 3: Surprised by three dark wizards, who...you see where this is going, right?

Cid: .........

Attempt 4, floor 4: As above, so below.

Cid: ............WHAT THE FUCK?!

I literally had all of two encounters with that particular enemy, throughout all my runs through the dungeon, that did not result in them surprising me. Seriously, what. What the hell, FF1. Hatebot much? Eventually I decided to just run through the place as fast as I could to just get the damned stone already, then come back to clear out the items after I'd upgraded my characters. (Oh, and two of those resets? Were fought with the enemies guarding the SHIRT. Fuck off and die, Square).

Actually, the game in general seems possessed by the spirit of the dread 'bot. My HP gains, for example? They uniformly fall into one of two camps: Either someone gets 4-5 HP on levelling up, or 24-26. There is no middle ground, the game's all "White Mage HP >>> Red Mage HP" or just lolololololyousuck. Maybe it objects to my sequence breaking, I dunno.

Anyway, volcano's a cakewalk with the CoT/Ice Cave equips and stuff bought from the northern continents. Under the sea~ is next.

AG: Just beat the Greta Gary. Damn, that was a lot of robots in one place. Good thing the game hands you Psycho Blaster midway through. (Man, does Ryune/Lune suck other than that move, though. 1100 damage with her gun attack, which is her best post-movement move. Yeah, you can't just blame that on the B on land.)

The surprise standout of the moment is Jamil, who is raping things left and right with the GX Divider. He's doing more damage than Garrod, and dodges better too - which one's the upgrade, again?

Finished Yoshi's Island DS.  The later levels, especially in World 5, were really frustrating and I felt it was unfair at times.  I wasn't trying to get all the red coins, flowers, and stars.  All I wanted to do was to get to the end of the level.  Defeating the bosses was a lot easier than surviving the castles so you can get to the red door.  Once I got past the credits, I went back to my cleared game file and tried one of the bonus levels.  I died once and had enough on that game.   Now...I'm playing Cave Story and Sonic Rush.

The good ones, mostly. There's a difference between "exploration" and "GATHER PHAT LOOT!" that a lot of authors don't understand.

That's how FF1 works.

For what it's worth, IIRC it's not random. Well, whether you get 4 or 5 is, but not whether you get 4 or 24. Fighter gets a lot more of these "strong" HP gains compared to other classes, at least in FF1o, which is why he ends up dominating that stat, for instance.

Though your post is an adequate explanation of why FF1 sucks, otherwise.

Got to one of the final bosses in Ar Tonelico 2. Turn 3 came along and the game froze. Tried it again, same thing. Put the game on easy, focused on killing before turn 3, and failed to do so as the game froze up for a third time.

So AT2's ending spoiler: Boss destroys world randomly, everyone dies.

Oh? Didn't remember that, been years since I played the game. (Still no excuse for a healer to handily beat out one of the red wizards in regards to HP, though).

Actually, Red Mages in general have consistently had crap HP in the series.  This holds true in FF1 Dawn of Souls too.  I believe FF3o White Mages had better HP Growth than Red Mages, and FF5 White Mages beat Red Mages on HP as well.  In general, Red Mage has often had less HP than White Mages <_<

DMC4: Completed!

Ok, the last Dante mission...well...

Yamato = yay!  New style! One that makes you let Dante pretend he's Vergil!  That part was cool...

what wasn't cool was the entire mission being a STUPID GIMMICK FIGHT.  Look, DMC, you're good at straight up fights; they don't all have to be Dante vs. Vergil like sword duels, but the general "Big scary monster tries to eat you, just dodge, fire, slash, etc." style is what you're good at.  Gimmick Bosses ARE NOT.  Its a really boring "Sit back, fire E&I until all the orbs shatter, move on!" fight , and nothing interesting.  Also makes Yamato a waste, and a pure replay thing ._.

Nero COMES BACK!  Time to buy stuff for him!  Still can't seem to get the timing on Red Queen's Excession stuff, and I often forget to charge it when I have free time, but that's an aside!  Took a bit of getting use to again after playing as Dante, such like "Oh, right, he had an Aerial Combo WITHOUT Swordmaster, and his Helm Splitter clone was a skill!"

Boss Rush = Cool!  I didn't expect it since you fought all those bosses twice already, but yeah, makes up for the stupid STATUE!!! of idiocy.

The Final Boss...well, ok, he had the same gimmick as before, but this was the sort of gimmick that works with the system, rather than restricts it, so that's fine.  What was annoying was at low health, everytime you break his shield, he goes into massive sword mode, and small window where you can actually knock him into hurt mode.  I ultimately had to resort to Devil Trigger -> Smite to get it in fast enough...at low enough health so the following plot fight actually killed me (that was embarrassing...)
But all this is made up for cause DMC4 lets you DEMONIC FALCON PUNCH THE POPE!

Overall...game was what I said it was at first: Does a lot of what DMC3 did right, only not quite as good, so overall inferior.  Dante's section was a blast, mind; yeah, less weapons, but the ability to use all 3 at once *AND* Swap between styles made up for it, so never really felt bad.

Nero, though...there was definitely more they could have done with him.  One Devil Arm, style, *AND* Gun?  Mrf.  Ok, so Red Queen was a neat weapon, but still, would it have hurt to give him one extra weapon? Really don't understand why they didn't just make him have Yamato as a second Devil Arm, one which covered more gimmicky purposes, just to add some variety. Didn't help that Nero had actual puzzles to some degree, though thankfully they weren't as much as I feared they would be given the Gyro nonsense.
This isn't to say Nero was bad, mind; just compared to Dante, his fights were repetitive, though after you play as Dante and go back to Nero, its not as bad since you HAVEN'T been playing as him for a while, if that makes sense.

Nero definitely has potential in terms of being turned into a fun, interesting character and staying unique to Dante, in the same vain Vergil did (...just Vergil they got right on the first try...did I mention DMC3 is awesome?), but there's definitely some kinks they need to work out with him.  Main one is just compared to Dante (and Vergil for that matter), his options are too limited.  One more Weapon, and he'd probably be fine!

Wouldn't shock me if he comes back in DMC5, whenever that comes out; game ended in such a way that it almost seemed like they were implying they wanted to use Nero again (I more than expect Dante to make an appearance again, naturally), which could be neat if they can flesh out his fighting style some.

...I know, I'm trashing Nero a lot.  He's not totally boring or horrible, I'm just saying he's clearly the most boring of the DMC PCs to date (shut up about anything DMC2 related), but he definitely has potential!  Especially since Red Queen is probably the coolest of the DMC Swords to date.

Oh, game was generally easier than DMC1 and DMC3, which...I guess is a bad thing.  Both games were hard, but not frustratingly so, so DMC4 being easier felt like it took something away?  Not that the game was a cake walk, but bosses in DMC1/3 tend to kick your ass once or twice before you get the hang of them.  DMC4, Berial and Echidna were both bosses I had no problems beating on my first try...all three times...

Nongameplay things?

Well, the Nero side of the plot was interesting by the series standards.  I'm aware this doesn't say much of anything, which is why I can say it!  Dante's side...didn't really have plot.  Its just Dante running around beating up demons, destroying Gates, and being totally awesome at the same time, as in, DMC3 style awesome.  Not that this is bad; its clear the writers realized they couldn't make remotely worthwhile plot from that point on (since Nero and Kyrie are kind of too central...), so why not just give the fans what they want, which is Dante being pure win...and even be creative about it sometimes! *points to the link he posted earlier*

Nero as a character can be summed up as "DMC1 Dante with better writing."  As in, he lacks Modern Dante's ham value, but he's still not totally serious and not afraid to wise crack in front of big evil villains, and is still fairly stylish.

So in the end, fun game!  Good follow up to DMC3, if inferior, but expecting them to redo DMC3 perfectly (let alone improve upon it) is asking for a bit much, so I'll take what I can get.

LOL at 'good' fantasy novels. If it can be classified as 'good', is it really still a fantasy novel?

I will concede that there's possibly one or two, but the vast majority of fantasy novels don't really rise above even the plots of jRPGs.

To be fair, there's plenty of fantasy novels that are self-insert fanfics written by women who wish they were beautiful princesses with two-colored eyes. These are nothing like jRPGs/power-gaming simulators... but they aren't necessarily a better alternative either...

On topic:
Wild Arms original: Rudy is now one arm short of a full 'Holmcross'. Cue the animal-eared mystic girl to the rescue! Let's travel to another world and collect some more McGuffins while we're at it!
Jack is pretty much soloing everything while Rudy and Cecilia play item-boy and debuffer. Occasionally I use Randomizer to see if I can understand the Sopko hype.

Yeah, White > Red > Black is the HP order for mages. It makes sense; the white mage is, after all, a pick for party defence, so they shouldn't be a total liability in their own durability. The red mage, on the other hand, has a powerful skillset as well as balanced offensive options, so low durability is a logical balance move. Black is meant to be a glass cannon, though in FF1 this probably didn't work out too well.

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.
