So, Star Ocean 4! I am a few hours in and I am enjoying it thus far. It rather reminds me of the original Star Trek in that I just got my mission, which was "GO HAVE COOL ADVENTURES IN SPACE!" Of course, I understand that Trek is one of the big influences on the series, sooo...
As usual, there's minor things about it in particular I enjoyed:
The revamped Calnus design has that weird roll bar thing like on the Calnus from SO2, but going over instead of under. Continuity porn.
The jRPG Vulcans are more likable than I had first thought. While they are more advanced than Earth, they don't seem very stuck up about it, and since humans are apparently the first comparable form of life they have encountered, they seem to think meeting aliens is pretty awesome, as opposed to the usual "Oh hey. Yeah, this was your first time? I guess I'm glad to be the one."
One of the jRPG Vulcans has decided he will sample the exotic charms of a human female, and apparently a bunch of them really fucking love ping-pong.
Ronixis and Claude are apparently descended from Space Chuck Yaeger. I guess that would explain how Claude gets promoted like eight times (Ensign to Captain is like eight promotions, right?) in the very short span of time between SO2 and SO:BS. SPACE NEPOTISM.
Hey, you finally explained why your space guns don't seem to work. I'm reminded of Star Trek: First Contact here. You know, how the Borg can't be hurt with lasers, so Picard and Worf solve the problems with a machine gun and a crazy sword/knuckleduster thingy? Except that instead, it's a space chainsaw. WTB .45 automatic?
