Like I said Niu, there is a lot of neat things in SF2.  It is still a bad game.  I may have very high standards and deride a lot of things that deserve it, but this isn't me laying in the boot.  It is flat honest truth.  It is a great game to have made, it was an experiment with high ideals.  It didn't work, it is a horrible broken game that is chock full of faq bait crap (you know, the stuff that is BAD TO FUCKING HAVE IN A GAME).  It is fine to like it, it is fine to hold it in a special place in your heart.  It is good to acknowledge and discuss.  What it is not is a good game.

Again, what is so FAQ baitish about it? The only true flaw for SF2 is its point of no return, that gave no forewarning. Other stuff? The game literally hands you what you need to beat the game unless you are dumb. The first dungeon of the game is already full of broken Quells, late game buyables are also fairly broken. And the techs, even you totally fails at learning them, John comes in with an atk 70+ tech for free, which is perfectly enough for late game, and Eleanor also comes in with decent spell already learned for your magic needs. The game is problematic only if you 1. be stupid and did not explore the first dungeon fully, or 2. forget to put their techs into the tech list when John and Eleanor joins. 3. Skip Wil's scenario in great number, which hands you shiny Quells ever other quest. 4. You don't recycle, when the game beats it to your face on how recycle suppose to keep you rich.


Oh and Neph, wait until IU starts to take itself seriously, and stuff crumbles and burn. I rolled my eye at the "Luke! I am your father!" part. And then I rolled my eyes again at the "power of love!"
Though, what's with the VA? For the Jp. version I played, it is typical anime stuff, what did they do for the US version?

This is the kind of reason the game is not so easy.  Why do you need to put your techs in the list for people to know them?  That doesn't make any sense and is never explained.  If you do it, you're in good shape, but if you don't, which could be perfectly reasonable, you're not.

Also, 'broken?' I think the word you're looking for is 'at least functional'.

I take issue with the idea that spells are easy to learn.  They are FAQ bait.  Especially beast spells.  Yes, there are some spells like Firestorm that you'd be foolish to miss, but unlike techs spells aren't intuitive to figure out the proper combos for (because they 'combo' into anything).

SF2 isn't the hardest game in the world, but it's a game that only becomes relatively easy once you have an idea of how to play it.  It would be easy to, say, spend lots of time leveling characters from the short interim sections of the game, neglect to do so late, and be hopelessly underpowered for the final dungeon.  Or miss key items like the Beast spear.  Or simply not know when to unequip former party members.

Jim pretty much covered it.  It comes down to it doesn't matter how hard or easy the game is Niu, it comes down the the things that make the game more difficult or more easy being unintuitive and really stupidly documented (or just plain fucking retarded in the stocking moves thing and temps nicking all your loot).

Game breaking good loot being in the first goddamned dungeon is intuitive?  It is the PLAYER's fault for not searching the entire dungeon (which unless I am completely mistaken is really circuitous and may not actually follow any conservation of space whatsoever) for stuff when normally you expect to find Potion That Heals 2% Of Your HP in first game dungeons?

There is a lot of reasons to like SF2 if it plays to things you like Niu, I agree with you whole heartedly on that, but it doesn't make it a good well designed, well polished, well put together game.  It makes it a novelty item.

7th Dragon: Finally down to 595 dragons left in Eden. Clearing out the dragons in that Zenda Bamboo Forest place. Then I'll proceed to Gouga Bamboo Forest to head down to Aizen.

Retro Games Challenge:  Got it.  Currently up to Gaudia Quest.  I actually don't like the Challenge aspect of gameplay.  Just when you get going pretty well and have a good game, bam, challenge complete, game over.  Capcom Classics Collection did it better where you unlocked the bonuses as you played but the game kept going.  Best game so far is Star Prince, and Rally King is surprisingly fun.  Rally King SP can bite me though.

PWI:  Mainly been playing my cleric, who joined the Alliance faction and is up to level 28.  Blademaster is level 43 and in no-money hell.  Compared to the Cleric who has over $350,000 sitting around...

Oh yeah.

Start Ocean 2 - Takes for fucking ever to finish Start Ocean 2 so I can get to the actual fucking game.  Thankfully Rena started with Dexterity (or Nimble Fingers if the remake prefers), so less reset required.  I had forgot how much the start of SO2 completely saps my will to play it for ages.  Oh well.

VP is still easy if you send up all the artifacts anyways.  I did it and still one-rounded just about every boss until endgame.

Okami: Went back to this after trying my FFVII HDINS. Just cleared Oni Island, and headed to Kamui. Lost against the first boss there. Will try again soon, I guess. -.-

Oh, and I'm pretty much decided on the games decision now. Seems opinions of SF2 are a bit mixed, whereas all have agreed that BoF3 is a good game. Thanks a lot to all who commented. :D

You game-overed in Okami? Really? Dude, you totally deserve an award for that. (Though I should talk, I died enough. Never outright game-overed though)

SO4: Finished. FInal boss actually stood up to the obnoxious twinking the game hands you on a silver platter. Overall I'd say the game is Grandia 3 with a real-time combat system that doesn't measure up to G3's combat system/implementation (which rocked for the most part). This is NOT a good thing. Hardcore fans of SO3 will likely want to give it a shot regardless for the combat system, but anyone who was offended by G3 or wouldn't give it the time of day with an inferior combat system (and an abundance of frustratingly unpolished design decisions) had best stay far far away.

ToV: Replayed some boss battles. WHY DOES (final boss spoilers) ANGST LOOK LIKE GOOD DRAMA BY COMPARISON TO SO4!? FUCK YOU TRI-ACE.

Not that I suppose it really matters, but the loot in the dungeon isn't that good, nor is the dungeon particularly complicated (besides, they TELL you to explore it thoroughly).

Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon: Hey, Forging is fun. As is class-changing - Frey makes a pretty badass Myrmidon. Is there any reason I wouldn't want to transition my excess healers to mage classes so they can keep leveled?

DQ8 is sadly on hold while I stat topic the hell out of Soul Nomad (it's coming along slowly!).

Soul Nomad - All endgame PCs are at the same level now, and damage testing is complete. Status rates/duration tests complete! Building a generic team to test the Final at the correct level now. After, I may do a quick run through a new game and power-level the early (sort-of) temp to endgame levels and add him to the averages. Apparently, this temp is attainable for endgame use if you do it right, so it seems fair to add him to the averages at endgame levels.

Wild Arms XF - Filling in my handheld playtime is this! My mum sent some video games in English and now I won't be quite so far behind the curve! She sent me Mana Khemia too, so hopefully I'll be able to vote on that soon. (After DQ8!)

WAXF is kicking my ass, I'm this close to FAQing it. Any particularly annoying challenges I should be aware of that I may need to prepare for while I'm still plodding through chapter 1?

Chap 1 is very much "use this class, possibly multiple copies of it!" heavy, from what I recall; basically, if a class sounds like it MIGHT be useful, you probably WILL need it.

Thankfully, Chapter 2 ends this, and lets you actually do things more at your own pace; there are a few maps later on that are very "YOU MUST USE THIS OR LOSE!" but they're rare.  Chap 1 is lacking in simple, straightforward fights, and relies more on gimmick maps than anything else.  Again, Chap 2 stops this and starts getting more into the usual "Kill Boss" or "Kill all enemies"

Basically, listen to Labyrinthia's prebattle explanation and do exactly what she says to get through Chap 1; later on, her things are more helpful hints rather than vital information, so you can get by without following her verbatim.

Recently started making some very strong attempts to beat P3.  So, plowed through December, and am now a week into January.  I have to say, I like the small touches for Christmas, and the way New Years went was also very good.  The change in tone as well as music just plain works, and I'm currently enjoying plowing through the Judgement S.Link.  As well, finally have enough cash that fusioning should be nicely experimental now.

Don't think I'll get all S.Links maxed, but I'll make a try at it.  And, at the rate I'm going, I expect it'll take me a little over 100 hours of gametime, making this probably the first such game I've played that will actually feel like it had proper pacing (for some odd reason, these games always either feel horribly drug out (Oh god DW7), or like they were rushed (Suiko3 and XG)).

The thing is, they are not. Lower-mid level spells are basically automatically learned once the element level is high enough, you don't even need duel mode for them. Which is enough, as it fetches you Guard Beast that practically is 1/3 chance invincibility as well as Berserk, which plays into your offensive needs. The only spell in my memory that I actually have to looked up and grind to learn is Clear Song... which is completly negligible when you have Fire Storm.

Also, putting skills back into the bank is stated clearly in the manual, and to this day, I never understand why people don't read them and blame the games for something when it is clearly written down.

WHAT? Are you serious? Spending time grinding for early chapter characters are a waste of time. Outside Ginny's team, you should waste no time on grinding levels. Wil's chapter progress in a pretty even pace that no grinding is really necessary as long as you kept an eye on the money. While Rich's team all have good enough starting level for you to pull things through

I only have 7 hours total in Infinite Undiscovery. And I have to be honest. I like this game. At the point I am at, I'm around a mid-B grade as in "wow, a new RPG that isn't kinda like, 'eh'."

I am sort of disappointed by this tendency I think will occur. It'll be Suikoden-sized casting, I'm pretty sure. But, in regards to leveling up characters, you'll mainly NEED to focus on only three characters. This is true for many games in general. And I find a lot of the characters skills to be fairly useful in battle, so I have to sadly scrub them to the side because I know they can't take the heat being half my level.

The story is actually gaining a bit more meat. This is good.

The battle mechanics are fucking easy as shit now. I've unlocked a few accomplishments (weren't hard), but I'm learning how to surprise attack enemies in the motherfuckin' OPEN plain. Also. I've learned a new aspect that I ignored in my previous post. Each character comes with their individual traits (Like, Capell for example: Chain Gang). These traits develop on battle events, or through the story that increases your characters' tenacity in battle. One of the twins, I can't remember her name, is scared of bugs. So, if a bee flies out a tree, she fuckin' spazzes and is USELESS. But, she's increased that trait (I'm thinking it's the archer girl now, and not the twin) and is capable of fighting. Team members' traits tell whether their strength increases when there's hordes of enemies, if you connect with them to use their skills for specific uses, feed them. . . etc.

Item creation is extremely simplified. This is not bad. Actually, it is grand. Though I've racked up tens of thousands of Fol trying to complete the maps (The environments are effing-mothereffin huge), I managed to temper two members' armour, gear and accessories AND weapons that would have ended up taking out half of the money I made. You of course, make these primarily from enemy items you get. If you surprise attack them, do cool ass aerial combos, etc etc situational stuffs, it increases your chances for rare items.

The bosses are interesting too. Though Lester seemed to cycle through only two items.

The game just feels very simultaneous. I've gotten used to unshielding and shielding my sword in the moment of attack to open treasures chests. Etc. Plus my flute does cool new things on the environment, like open new pathways. The AI is fucking awesome. It's saved my ass so many times when I just ran blindly into a pack of troops. The music is getting more interesting. The towns are really just by-towns. With Item Creation, they're kind of useless besides INNs or some of the spiffy sidequests citizens'll make you do. A lot of time can be spent in the city too. You're able to connect to any of your team members in the city, and when you talk to people, they'll talk to your connected team member and depending on their traits, etc, new items may be received, or a new quest, etc etc.

Also. I like the fact that every dungeon has specific events and it's not just fetch and go. Don't get me wrong, the game can easily revert to hack and slashing, but if you want to topple enemies properly, and fast, and get double the experience, fol and increase character traits, learning how to juggle combos with your team mates is sweet. At the beginning of the game, targeting an enemy was difficult. But that's probably because Capell's trait said he sucked as sword combat. That has since increased. I tried auto-target and it's the most god awful thing ever. You're typically running AWAY from the enemy targeted and the camera goes haywire.

Side issues. I don'tknow if it's my used copy or not, but the sound has gone in and out sometimes. That and one time I was walking in a dungeon of a castle and uh, I was walking on clouds and then a gargoyle came out of a stonecrete recess and the floor magically reverted back to stone. :P I was going to clean my disc, but kept playing it. So I dunno if that'll change once I clean it.


Edit* Also. I thought the enemies were free roaming but I think it depends on the environment. On the plains, enemies are normally IN the same area, as you can find them in the same spot all of the time. They actually regenerate pretty fast, maybe within a minute or two so which makes it easy to gain levels - never having to go in and out and in and out. But once you get their attention if you don't surprise them, their movement radius is larger than I've noticed in a few games that have enemy battles on the same exploration screen with no change. In the castle, I saw that the troops moving radius was pretty rigid. Though, I fucking hate archers in this game. It's hard to reflect their arrows (though I'm working on it), but if you have more than one archer shooting at you at different intervals, and you're running after their asses, it feels like you're running for a while. Some bitch ran down a corridor, around and turn and shot me down when I turned the corner. :( I didn't die. It was just annoying. She should stay in a 2x2 pixel space!! IT MAKES EVERYTHING SO MUCH EASIER.

Eh. But it's funner that way I guess.

SRWZ Special Disc: Hey, the puzzle missions aren't "do EXACTLY THESE STEPS OR YOU'RE BONED" like the ones in D and J! And you get to set up your own upgrades, parts and skills, so there's more flexibility all around. That's pretty neat. Also, there are 18 of them, which is a good number.

Peggle: Never played before, so I tried out the demo on Live. It's kind of like Plinko, only not as awesome.

Final Fantasy Crystal Defenders: Also played the demo. Kind of interesting.

Age of Booty: Cleared everything but the last two Hard missions.

Braid: Walked through all the worlds, built one puzzle.

Disgaea DS: Cleared Chapter 7. Average level of party is 2300. ...Yeah.

Thinking about Fallout 1 and Harold has made me want to replay it. My current character? "Dolemite, motherfucker!" Basically I'm only going to wear a leather jacket, and only use shotgun/assault rifle derivatives (as they and fist fighting are the only weapons Dolemite employs). I'm gonna let em know that Dolemite is my name and fuckin up motherfuckers is my game by attacking anyone who gives me the slightest bit of lip. I'm not going to go around randomly shooting up towns, but ANYONE who sasses me in a dialogue tree gets shot.

Several people have been shot so farin Junktown, so I'm not welcome there.

SRWZ Special Disc: Beat the first round of challenge missions. Fun.

Kingdom Hearts: Finished both go-rounds in Hollow Bastion, got the last dalmatians, and grabbed all the non-useless Trinity items I could find. I guess I'll see how far I can get in the Hades Cup before heading to the End of the World.

Edit: Also, does Monstro have a keyhole I should be backtracking to lock?

It does not.

Hades cup... oh.  It's worth noting that you can stop after every boss fight if you need to.  Noteworthy because some of the fights drop useful equips... and because some of said fights are kinda nasty of course.
