Damn, I've been messing around with a lot of games recently...
Took a break from Soul Nomad stat topiccing and played SO4 in Japanese.
Fun game, and not understanding half of the story probably helped it as the parts that I -did- understand seemed really cool. Reimi was especially enjoyable with the exception of the "Pervert->Slap!" anime girl trope thing. They load the emo wankering on pretty thick in this game, but honestly, Edge has a pretty decent reason to be blaming himself... though I agree it didn't need to go on as long as it did.
Also, Roak was fuckin' awesome. Just a gorgeous place and I enjoyed seeing it again.
Welch scenes were generally hilarious. I especially enjoyed the scene where she convinces Phase that Edge will 'molt' into a hideous monster. Also, watching Baccus get all hot and bothered by Welch's anime trope displays was kind of amusing.
Phase and Lym I was constantly going back and forth on... half the time, those two seemed dynamic and interesting... and other times I just wanted the scenes to stop 5 minutes sooner. In the end, it made for some good scenes, though a bit predictable.
Star Ocean The Last Hope and I made a deal - If the game wouldn't refer to "Hope" as some kind of tangible power in and of itself at any point in time, then I wouldn't scream at it. Luckily, we managed to keep this deal, and I was able to tolerate the cheesy dialogue that kept skirting around saying this taboo phrase.
Gameplay... I don't feel I mastered it. I basically just got lazy and power-levelled through the game instead of ever taking the time to properly translate the menu well enough to learn all the ins and outs of battle. I know that Rush Combos and Blindsides exist... but I don't really know how to do them properly... Final team was Baccus, Alumat, Lym, Mewria... or however it's properly romanized.
Seiken Densetsu 3 - More Action RPGs! I basically tried this out as I'd never really looked at it before. Started with Kevin, which was kinda sad as the first thing that happens is animal abuse (and English language abuse! *drum riff*). It looks promising actually... WAAAY more than SoM, I don't really see the anti-hype it gets from some.
Wild Arms XF - Still slowly going through Ch1. The game is everything I'd ever wanted in an SRPG. I'd always thought to myself that if I ever made an SRPG, it would be a hexagonal system with lots of unique job classes - nothing typical. And that it would have a small collection of story characters with unique abilities, but that could also use the generic jobs... and that there would be multiple MP types... and there would be a white dog (I'm not joking) who was playable... It's both awesome and kind of unfulfilling to be handed this game without any effort on my part...
Tales of Vesperia - Now that the SN stat topic is close enough to done, I can finally concentrate on this. It is everything a Tales fanboy wants - all the Tales goodness with only half the fat. Well-polished Tales. It's the stuff dreams are made of. I could be less effusive about this and try to objectively judge this game, but I don't want to. I'm happy and I see no reason to spoil the fun with 'objectivity'.
Dragon Quest 8 - I tried to play it again. It's such a well-polished game, and has Level 5 RPG goodness... But Tales of Vesperia's siren call has lured me away. I hope I'll come back to it when I finish ToV.
Lufia 3 - The emulator fits in the corner of my work computer's screen and no one notices as it flashes like an internet banner ad... It's pretty much the only emulator game I can do this with at work where the text is bulky enough to read it at such a condensed size (other GBC/GBo games would probably work, but I've played most of the good ones already... this means I'm stuck with Lufia 3.) The game is crap so far, but I like the large party size! The characters are also all surprisingly snarky, which is kind of charming. Fruely.
