Fire Emblems have pretty awful subtitles on average (Path of Radiance what the fuck), but yeah Thracia 776 is the worst.

Fair enough... but the alternative can end up being too literal.

E.g. Arc the Lad. Super Mario RPG.

...Raidou Kuznoha vs. King Abaddon?

Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

DQ IV (DS):  Chapter 5.  Mostly killing time to get Hero up to par.

Valkyria Chronicles: Chapter 15, but mostly did the reports.  Main group is largely:
Alicia-- makes the gods of game balance cry
Wavy-- best non-Alicia scout, well, him or the dancer I guess
Rosie-- burninates
Lynn-- see Rosie, although her last ability makes her occasionally 2 for 1 enemies.
Largo-- pretty much because he's a leader and has a chance of self-rez; I'd give him a mortar if there were an ideal spot to actually use one
Audrey--reserved for boss tanks
Marina-- amazing accuracy
Nadine-- parks out behind Welkin/Zaka and keeps them in one piece

Captain K is awesome indeed.

S3 - And then, there were none. Flame Champion Geddoe, although I left an extra save for the eventuality of a Chris Flame Champion sightseeing trip. First impressions are "um wow True Fire Rune suddenly becomes horribly broken when the person holding it has an A+ in Fire".

No, no. That one is intentionally over-the-top and long. It is made of awesome and win. It's probably my favorite title ever. It certainly shouldn't be grouped with the likes of Arc the Lad. For many reasons.

TacticsLayer: You know, this being NinjaStudios, and NinjaStudios made Izuna, I don't know why I am surprised. Anyway.

The game throws at me what is probably going to become the most annoying part of this game - contests. The first one is "Miss Hirasaka" contest, and basically you answer questions and your answers determine your appeal to the judges. Certain answers make some of them go F5F5F5F5 and others FFFFFFF RAEG. After that is dancing time. Just button-mash and see the judge reaction. Better crowd reaction/judge reaction, the more points. And more points is good.

Anyway, I was also introduced to a clothes shop, which is basically what you need to get stronger, as in different combinations of clothes give skills, etc. For example, to get a Healing skill, you need to give a character a Nurse outfit. :|

God-fucking-damnit, NinjaStudios. I refuse to make sense of your games anymore.

I didn't try yet! Also, I'm juggling between Chris and Geddoe for the moment, since I ended up resetting when I ended up accidentaly taking up the FC's name. I realize that everybody calling Geddoe "Renee" for the rest of the game is bound to be surprisingly awkward.

(btw MK Renee with True Fire Rune in the DL yesiu.jpg)

EDIT: Also, a C in Fire, Chris? I guess they just wanted to nail the coffin regarding their respect towards mage Chris hype. She can't even equip Wizard Hats. =/

Valkyria Chronicles- Finished. Max fails, Faldio fucking fails. Wow. The whole ending was laughable and had me banging my head against the wall. Fucking Japanese storytelling. It lacks so much common sense it's pathetic. Even when they're relying on classic situations and tropes, they can't put them together in any coherant or sensible way. The characters are fun enough, but the dialogue, story and villains just keep things from clicking altogether. It's actually not that bad until after you meet Cordelia, but for unrelated reasons it just completely unravels after that.

It's an impressive game otherwise, which is really sad. The visual aesthetic is amazing and they do a good job of making your generics not so generic, though it leaves you wanting more out of them. The gameplay is amazingly fun. I didn't mind that the game values achieving your objective quickly over fighting defensively, but it could have used some more varied objectives.

Class balance is nice, though like others have said, doesn't quite work in practice. Still, Lancers, Engineers and Snipers have their niches, which they perform with stellar results. Honestly though, I don't really think any of those are meant for general use, so the practical balance is questionable anyway. They're irreplaceable in some situations. I know some people just forgo Lancers at the end in favor of Orders, but I dunno. Never seemed worth it to me when you can use those moves for other things. Plus those times you NEED that order to destroy a tank are more infrequent than actually needing Lancers.

I'll probably replay the game if it ever gets trophy support for it's medals. It's definately worth it, but with so much on my plate it isn't without the extra incentive.

Scouts- Alicia, Freesia and Aika. Had Cherry and Juno, but they were largely unused.
Shocktroopers- Rosie, Alex, Vyse. Wendy, Nina and Jane sat on the sidelines.
Lancers- Largo, Elysse. Hector and Yoko occasionally came out. Rosina did nothing.
Engineers- Claudia and Dallas handled everything.
Snipers- Catherine. Marina mostly sat out.

Mana Khemia next!

As generic as Arc the Lad is as a name, you know what?  It tells you something.  It is about a dude named Arc.  That is what it is.

Thracia 776.
Thracia 776.

Is about Thracia 776.  Okay.

Arc the Lad: Twilight of Spirits.  Generic again, but you know what?  It still says something.

Thracia 776.

Worst.  Name.  Ever.

The Belgariad Book 1: Pawn of Prophecy.  Generic.  Descriptive.  Evocative.

Thracia 776.

Worst. Name.  Ever.

Sorry, I guess I should give it the full thing.

Fire Emblem 4:  Thracia 776.

It is a Fire Emblem Sequel.  About Thracia 776.  Worst.  Name.  Ever.

Fire Emblem 6: The Sword of Seals.   It is a Fire Emblem Sequel.  It is about a Sword that seals something.  Descriptive and actually kind of evocative.

Not. Worst. Name. Ever.

Fuck.  Fire Emblem.  Evocative, if not descriptive IT AT LEAST SAYS SOMETHING TO YOU.

Not. Worst. Name. Ever.

Thracia 776 is entirely meaningless without context.  That is what makes it a bad title.

Suikoden.  This is also meaningless to an English speaker, however it is still evocative partly BECAUSE it is meaningless.

Not. Worst. Name. Ever.

As you can see it isn't just that the words mean nothing.  The problem is that it is something you can understand and yet in spite of that it is entirely meaningless.  It fails entirely at what a title should be doing.

It would be like instead of calling Black Adder Goes Forth what it is, calling it Black Adder : West Germany 1945.  Except that we don't know what Germany is and the year 1945 was on a time scale that is completely made up.  That is to say.  Worst. Name.  Ever.

Snipping hand-picked examples

In summation: Titles have an evocativeness axis and a descriptiveness axis.
Arc the Lad is descriptive but not evocative so it isn't the worst ever.
Pawn of Prophecy is descriptive and evocative so it isn't the worst ever.
Suikoden is gibberish, which isn't descriptive but is apparently evocative so it isn't the worst ever.

Thracia 776 in context is descriptive but not evocative completely unlike Arc the Lad so it is the worst ever.
Thracia 776 out of context is gibberish, which isn't descriptive or evocative so it is the worst ever.

Meanwhile there is a bad analogy against a punny name that misrepresents the situation. Also titles are supposed to be doing something unspecified.

Soon I will be starting Ys I. I am overcome with the emanating waves of description and evocativeness.

As you should be.  Ys is truely a title of epic magnitudes.

Edit - This doesn't change that Thracia 776 is shit.

It is descriptive in the context of having played the game.  That isn't what titles are for.  At that point you have played the game, the title is meaningless in the face of having you know played the actual game.  If the game holds together worse than the description of what is going on  int the title then the game is pretty fucking horrible.

Edit 2 - Oh yeah I do concede that the above was far from my funniest piece.

humoring you guys, damned if I know why:

Thracia 776 is a year (and a place?  I'm unclear on this), and titles that refer to themselves as such trend toward the military or at least the self-serious.  I mean, no one would name something "West Germany 1945" if it actually WAS Black Adder.  That kind of name is for black and white history channel specials.  The implication is that the game's plot has a history of some meaning, and that the events of the game somehow will fit into that broader scheme.

If Suikoden as meaningless gibberish is an evocative title...

Well, Thracia 776 is pretty meaningless gibberish in any language... and it was written by a Japanese person for a Japanese audience where such exotic sounds as 'Th' are pretty evocative for gibberish...

Of course, but that logic 'Arc the Lad' is an evocative title... >.>;;

Suikoden isn't necessarily meaningless gibberish. As Grefter put it best, it's only meaningless to a non-English speaker.
Suikoden, or 水滸伝, is loosely based off the Chinese novel Water Margin, even down to the 108 characters/SoDs/Heroes (one difference though is the Tenkai Star isn't introduced until chapter 18 whereas in the Suikoden games he is the first guy you control).

Yes, I'm pretty sure everyone at the DL knows what Suikoden means... >.>;;

But Grefter referred to it as both 'meaningless gibberish' and 'evocative'.

My point was that Thracia 776 and Arc the Lad are both meaningless gibberish to be audiences they were directed at... and I don't see why they would be any less 'evocative' in that context.

Grefter, when did I ever say you had to play Thracia 776 to know the context of the title.  I said that if you had played FE4, then you would understand the context of the subtitle of FE5.  ie. It's a sub title meant to have meaning to people who play the series, and to immeadiatly convey the knowledge to those who knew of said context that it wasn't a chronological sequel, but instead events that happened during the blank period in FE4's story that were skipped over.

So, for the target audience, it works fine as a descriptive subtitle, even if it's not one that's to your tastes as an evocative title.

Bear in mind that FE5 was released for the Super Famicom in 1999, long after the 16 bit generation was dead and buried. It was never intended for anyone but the hardest of hardcore FE fans (especially considering what the series was like at that point).

358/2 Days is similarly descriptive for a title for the KH game.

It's a game about the year of existence Roxas had while Sora was dreaming.

Well, not the full year, 7 days of it was covered at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts 2. So it makes the number 358 significant. The /2 part pretty obviously refers to how Roxas is only half of Sora's being.

However, I completely agree that it's a stupid title because any title that requires a pronunciation key is stupid. (For the curious, it's Three-Five-Eight Days Over Two, IIRC). Similarly, Gigli. Probably a more appropriate comparison to KH358/2 than it should be...
