Bionic Commando: So, I played the new PS3 game. It has some serious flaws, but there is still some fun to be had with the swinging around and whatnot. The mechanics of that are pretty much perfectly implemented and the camera is, mercifully, among the most user-friendly I've encountered in a 3d game (as it had to be, given that you often need to find another handhold in a hurry). The docks section was probably the standout chapter of the game: swinging through a tangle of pipes and towers on a rainy night, chased by flying enemies that can 2HKO you. You are going to get pummelled if you stop, so you have to keep moving and play hit-and-run. It's hard, but it also forces mastery of the central gameplay conceit in order to progress and this is something I approve of. The Constructor was a pretty impressive piece of architecture too (shame that its boss fight was completely underwhelming. Why not make use of all that scaffolding for a dramatic encounter? That was just lazy, Grin).

The problem is, that's not always what the game is. Boss fights, for example? I tend to think that boss fights should be showpieces that force you to use every advantage the game's system offers you to win. And the first boss pretty much is--you fight a helicopter at the peak of a burned-out skyscraper, a jungle-gym of twisted girders with a radio tower jutting from its center--but the other two? (Yes, the game only has three bosses. More on that in a moment). One is fought in an empty field, the other isolates you on a helipad and gives you little use for the bionic arm but to save yourself if you happen to get knocked off the edge of the platform. This is a terrible design decision. Go to all the trouble of perfecting the mechanics of swinging around like Tarzan and then make it completely irrelevant for two out of three bosses? What were the designers thinking? And the last area of the game (no, it doesn't end at a boss fight) is completely built of walls that can't be grappled and gives you nothing to do but plow through a mookswarm. Bad idea, as combat without the arm is basically standard shooter fare (well, you can still hurl objects at people, pick up goons and smash them around, but the point is that you're earthbound in a game whose chief gameplay mechanic is brachiation).

Exploration was also more limited than I would've liked sometimes. Having a linear path is one thing, but I resented it whenever the game limited vertical movement. Sometimes I just wanted to climb straight up a building and have a look around, but oops, there's a cloud of radiation up there that will kill you if you try. Not cool. Most areas do have plenty of space for you to swing through within their straightforward path, though, and virtually any surface can be grappled. The game is fairly short and replay value is limited, but it does let you warp to any level you've previously beaten if you just feel like exploring a specific area.

Basically, how much the game succeeds depends on how much you enjoy playing Spiderman. Sort of like Assassin's Creed, I guess? Except AC's combat looked deathly dull and BC's combat is just unremarkable (also, you can and should combine constant movement with combat, not just because it makes things more interesting but because jumping into a gang of mooks tends to get you killed). Doubleplus points for remixing the old Bionic Commando songs for use here, though. That was pretty classy.

Plot stuff isn't really worth mentioning. Which is about what I expected, really (and I wouldn't have cared either way just as long as they got the gameplay right), but some of the dumber events would've been more bearable if the game had the slightest sense of irony. Still, the non-ending was mildly insulting.

Joe is a traitor for some reason! (Anyone who's played videogames before should call this within five minutes). The arm is a person! Mysterious Sniper Guy totally acts like he's important, then just vanishes! And nice work getting yourself killed there, Mags. Yes, let's dash straight towards the terrorist in powered armor, this plan cannot fail.

Granted, CAPCOM PLOT applies. Again, I wasn't expecting much to begin with.

Hm. Joe's VA sounded really familiar...*looks it up*...Roger Smith in Big O, and Gale in DDS. I fail for not recognizing that.

Red alert 3 - tried getting some of the what I consider the harder trophys today.

Beat enemy in 5 minutes - I'm way to slow of the mark to normally get this so I did something I saw someone else do. I moved my MCV towards the enemy base (on normal mind). Deplyed it and then built a barracks and some attack dogs. After all the enemy infantry were killed I captured their barracks and pumped out heavy infantry to destroy the enemy buildings.

Beat extreme difficulty enemy 1 vs 1 - I'm a slow starter as I've said which is death on this difficulty so I had to resort to swarm tactics here. I pumped out some 30 rocket angels as fast as I could and destroyed the enemy base before they destroyed mine.
Had to reset a lot as the enemy had a lot of anti air but I eventually won.

Win against 3 enemies by yourself - Failed at this one. I can destroy one of the enemies but the other two start troubling me so much that I'm forced to defend. A double superweapon later and I've lost.

BoFV

I took Ys being so short as a sign that I was supposed to be getting back into this. Played back up to the Frozen Road, but now my brother has commandeered the PS2 to play Vice City Stories on, so I will have to wait until I get it back before continuing.

Found a skill for Lin that I had missed somehow so my going back turned out to not be a complete loss after all. Nina is somewhat horrifically overpowered early on with level 2 magic.

Also played around with the fairy colony a bit which I hadn't bothered with before. Seems to be better than I had expected.

Longest Journey

Played a bit more of this. Finished Chapter 4 and went through Chapter 5 while I was at it. At this rate I may finish before 2020. The arrival of Crow has made the game more aligned with what I find entertaining so maybe I'll get around to playing it more often.

Suikoden Tierkreis

In the end I decided that as Ys II is not SRW it would have to take its chances with everything else. This resulting in Tierkreis being decreed.

Currently just past the mountains on the way to visit the Porpos.

It's good so far, but I wouldn't put it on the same level as S1 or 2. Random things that are perturbing: Weapons being equippables instead of character-unique, character models are pretty ugly, the main character could not speak any faster if he tried.

Mission system is nice but they haven't done anywhere near enough with it yet, which I'm hoping is because I'm still so early in the game. Trading doesn't seem worth it from what I've seen so far either.

Ogre Battle- I'm netplaying/sort of LPing this with VSM. Just cleared Pogrom forest.

Quick notes-

-Octopuses are really solid early on. Four attacks is good, and there is enough water to make them deadly. 0
-Fuck the Stone of Dragos. I've gotten two class change items so far. Both of them that. Insulting.
-Going to try some monsters/classes I 've never really used before. Vampire's high on the list, as is werewolves.
-It's fun when you have a second person to watch/comment.
-Pogrom forest has too many fights. You get -26- fucking foes here. The previous map had 12 (Sharom District), the map after this (The werewolve one) has 11. You don't get more than 26 until fort freaking Allamoot which is firmly at the 2/3s or so through the game mark.
-Wild Men/Berserkers blow.

Six units right now. I need to split some people off, but right now:

Knight, Knight, Hawkman, Cleric, Destin- Pretty standard Destin formation.
Lans, Ninja, Knight, Wizard, Wizard- Donno if I'm going to convert these wizards in doll mages or not. Lans and Knight are going to go Ninjas.
Cleric, Gryphon, Knight, Knight. This will be a high alignment unit.
Warren, Wizard, Hellhound, Cleric- Working shockingly well. Hellhounds are -fantastic- tanks early on and warren hits like a freight train.
Samurai, Knight, Beastman, Valkyrie, Cleric. Will be a Samurai Master/Muse unit later on.
Cleric, Octopus, Octopus- Smashes shit. First dream crown goes to this unit.

I'm going to split off at least one unit next map, probably two. Going to use two undead as meat shields, and stick a low level female leader and a giant here. Undead are strictly Jeigans, but they work well enough for that.  Donno what I'll do with that other unit.

FF7: beat this for the first time in about a decade.  Couldn't say anything about it that hasn't already been said, but anyway, what a weird and arty game.  Cool stuff.
Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

First time in a decade.  So he hasn't replayed it since about 3 years after it came out.  That said, CC isn't bad and worth borrowing from someone (Sopko?) and taking it for a spin if you got the time.  I am still fluttering around with it occasionally about halfway through and can't say it is a total waste of time.

You... didn't know that already?  Her only real problem is availability.  Sure outclassed by the obvious choices, but she still is pretty freaking broken.

It's been years and I never really used her first playthrough due to exactly availability. It's been long enough that this replay is rather close to a fresh playthrough.

Arguably, Grandia Xtreme's plot is better too! Despite how much I anti-hyped it when it first came out... when compared to G3...

Well, at least GX's incredibly bland and trite story is -coherent-.

Basically, I just want to chime in that G3 plot is bad bad bad bad bad. I have no other motive for this post.

and worse voice acting!

Freaking Mark Hamill.

Soon you'll be adding "and slightly less broken (but more gamebreaking) egg fusions" to your description.

Hm, thinking on it, GX bears a more than passing resemblance to Dark Cloud.  Similar dungeon structure, extremely useful catgirls, the list goes on.

Mirror's Edge- Needed a distraction from RPGs that wasn't Wipeout. Through to Chapter 3. Fun game. Controls are a might picky and some of the stunts can be frustrating sometimes, but it's been loads of fun. You get a real sense of accomplishment when you go long stretches without falling or fucking up. Story's just kinda there. Tries to be some authoritarian dystopia but never really explains anything. I guess EA knew the game was an experiment and didn't want to put too much effort into something that might not pan out.

Cross Edge: Up to the first Prinny fight. This game doesn't kid around when it decides to throw hard fights at you. Holy crap.

Game so far is proving highly entertaining. Story is B-Movie fluff that makes me giggle. Gameplay has a fairly obnoxious, but not at all insurmountable, difficulty curve. At least I think. We'll see if I can beat Prinny.

Trading doesn't seem worth it from what I've seen so far either.

Trading is very, VERY important.  Not only is it your main source of cash, but it also unlocks equipment/items in your castle shop.

Cross Edge - Got up to 1-3.  Randoms started kicking my ass again, sadly.  I guess it was just a matter of time since I haven't really focused on making new equipment lately (haven't needed it).  TANK guy in the previous area is unkillable, sadly.  I hope he doesn't drop anything good.

Shadow Hearts 2: SCREW YOU KURANDO, YOU SUCK.
What's with the sudden difficulty spike at the start of Disc 2? I've gone from enemies I can generally OHKO at the end of Disc 1 to (ignoring the section as Kurando & Blanca) enemies that are generally OHKOing me and take about 4 turns to kill with my strongest characters. And that isn't helped by the party-split.

Hrm. Maybe. A few people in chat suggested the same, but I had no trouble whatsoever on the Terada (or whatever his name was - the boss on the battleship.) It was just those damn Flying Drones and killer spider things that were screwing me over.

Spikes.  If you're having that much of trouble with the game, get a set of those and go wild.

Makes the game easier until the difficulty evens out.

Trading is very, VERY important.  Not only is it your main source of cash, but it also unlocks equipment/items in your castle shop.

Mission prize money has been more than enough for me so far. I'm also having a little trouble matching this up to the relatively low price differences of trade items meshed with the amount you can carry being capped relatively low also. It's fine enough if you're just selling things you picked up, but actually trading just doesn't seem helpful at all currently.

I will keep this in mind for later however, since I don't currently have any shops. Presumably things may have picked up on this front by then.
