Worth noting, however, that in addition to what Pyro said...

ToV becomes somewhat of a cash crunch later on.  It might not seem like it at all now, but ToV monetary gains do not progress at the same rate as store prices, so eventually, while you may have the ITEMS to make something, the MONEY may be a bigger problem.  Though, otherwise, more or less what he said; Synthing helps, but its not necessary.  Just grab what you can get, and move on; don't go out of your way to get things unless they seem really important (Tyrant's Fist might qualify for that, for example)

Thief-type is an option, I suppose, but the problem of high tech-aptitude helping lockpicking, while I don't think that there is much in the way of sneaky high-Tech armor, seems annoying.

This is why you play a Tech Thief.  Because you walk around with your Chapeau of Magnetic Inversion, your Smoking Jacket and a pistol and you shoot people in the mouth.

I love Arcanum.

MR2:

So, started up a new file, got chat to randochoose my CDs. Ended up with a decent monster selection, Sage chose my Pixie/Golem for raising.

2/3/4/3/3/3. Average ahoy.

So, got down to ~500g, was getting frustrated, selling Colt and her organs separately on open market was looking tempting, started throwing her in matches and scratching by that way.

And then she hit three years old. ...and I realized she had -just- hit her prime.

Three years later, she's managed to grab me three Gold Peaches, almost 100k in money, the Double-Edged Sword for unlocking a Durahan, and the Mock seeds. Off... good but not great stat growths.

I'm impressed.

MHX:

Beat X mode, playing Vile mode.

... okay, this is pretty tough, at least for me. Chill Penguin's stage isn't too bad until the double-Mecha Rush which I can't survive through, Armored Armadillo's way tougher than expected as Vile (his "Zoom Around The Room" attack, which I think was a limit in X mode, isn't here). The lack of maneuverability really doesn't help him much. Grabbed a Heart Tank, thinking I should pick up more before going after Chill Penguin.

PoR - Okay, restarted this, back to where I was when I reset the world. Only now with 100% more Jonathan shurikens, which make him good instead of useless in the early game. Not bad.

Nah, Cross Edge twinking is pretty gratuitously overpowered from the get go.  The thing is that the game actually fights back.  Cross Edge belongs at least on the Ar tonelico/Growlanser: Heritage of War level for twinking, but unlike those games Cross Edge doesn't just collapse under it (or in Ar tonelico's case just collapse by playing).

Cross Edge - Got up to the Jedah fight.  Even with six STR+30s and six INT+30s on my characters I can't actually kill him in the time limit?  SERIOUSLY?  Dude's a freaking tank.  Getting some better gear and going to try again.  I was at least close before, so I should be able to do this.

Oundean 2 - FC'd Believe.  Samurai Blue hates me.

Mega Man 9:

So I finally bought this.  Harder than I expected, but that's because I've played the early MM games too much, and forgot that they're all frustratingly hard until you start to remember what's coming up next, then they become fun.  Beat Concrete man, got to Splash woman with half a health bar and no lives, got frustrated with Jewel Man and Hornet Man's stages.  That flower miniboss is a fucker.  Trying to decide if I should go through in the prescribed order or not.  Probably will if/when I get to another boss and then lose miserably.

I expect this to eat up the next couple of weeks, as I plan to do as many of the achievements as I can stand to.  I can already tell I'm not going to do the "beat all 8 bosses with 1 pixel of health" one.  >_>

Actually, it's not "beat all 8 bosses with 1 pixel of health", it's "beat all 12 bosses with one pixel of health", because that achievement hates you.

It hates you even more once you realise that over half the bosses only do even amounts of damage.

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.

Tales of Symphonia 2:  You know, I wanted to do a Meeple Rant for me finishing the game...but I can't just bring myself to do an all out thing for a game that I beat in 25~ Hours, and what not...so I'll be brief.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON!!!!!

Battle System is a branch of ToV's.  Simplified skill system reliant on levels instead of equipment (though some equips mimic the effect of skills), Free Run, Unison Attacks replace Over limits, and has the whole Monster Recruitment thing which I didn't get big into, though I didn't totally neglect just in case I needed some spots filled up.  Its decent enough, but doesn't stand out.

Cast...its the ToS cast for the most part with a few new faces, which isn't a bad thing!  Emil worked for what he was, Marta wasn't as annoying as she could have been (Tales writing makes her sometimes actually amusing, especially when other characters actually make fun of her.  One of the differences between her, and say, Anise is that the other characters don't actually approve of her antics, but rather, make fun of her for it), Richter was a better villain than Mithos! ...This says jack shit, I know, but hey, at least you can't hold that against him!  Alice and Decus were creepy as henchman; the little immature brat who can kick your ass and the narcissistic freak whose obsessed with that brat...I suppose they're better than all TotA God Generals sans Dist (mostly cause the God Generals universally failed outside of him *punts*)

Plot...is simple and inoffensive, and doesn't really fuck with the ideas ToS put forth, at least from my recollection.  Just don't try to link the game to Tales of Phantasia; ToS was so obviously *NOT* meant to be a prequel, that Namco pulling that "Yes, its a prequel!" claim after claiming it wasn't really just fucks with the continuity back with those two games already, if you just ignore that stupid supposed claim, ToS2 fits fine (and really, ToS and ToP being related is just really fucking stupid anyway.)

Music...its Tales music.  Ok, the final boss theme (...as in, the final non-plot fight) was good.  The returning ToS Songs were decent enough, though Sakuraba needs to STOP PUTTING EXTRA FILLER INTO REMIXES OF SONGS.  Like a Glint of Light was an awesome song in ToS...ToS2?  It sounds great at first...then comes the needless filler that wasn't there, that just makes the song drag, and sounds awful.  Stab the Sword of Justice suffered the same problem in SO4 really; the part that was originally there sounds great, then the stupid filler comes in.  Oddly, they didn't bring back Fighting of the Spirit...but they DID use Raise a Curtain from ToP, almost as though they want to remind us "YES THE GAME'S ARE RELATED WE'RE NOT LISTENING!" (Mizuho still used Mysterious Jap'on for that matter.)

Game gets a 7/10 overall?  It was a fun diversion, and didn't have many qualms about the game overall...barring the last Alice/Decus fight.  That one can go rot.

It gets much more manageable once you've beaten Chill Penguin and Storm Eagle, but getting a couple tanks before facing any of the bosses will definitely help.

DDS2 stat topic on hold. FF Summer Challenge underway~

Basically, I'm trying to finish every FF 1-10, X-2 & XII over two months. I'm looking at about 3 games every 2 weeks here.
Went to start FF8, technology screwed me over, and my TV is now broken. >_> It's gonna take a few days to get that fixed, so emulator time instead!
FFI: On the way to the Marsh Cave. Anyone who says you need Lv 5 to beat Garland deserves to be punched. I beat him at Lv 2. Using the standard speed-run easy team of two Fighters, Black Mage & White Mage. If people actually care, they can follow progress in more detail on my games blog. =P

Welcome to the "a lot of people utterly fail at RPGs and can't understand the concept of doing things other than grinding to overpower the universe" corollary. FF1 design also didn't help disencouraging the grindfesting either, so I'm betting a lot of people just end up doing it on reflex.

BoFV - Just went through the post-Frozen Road battle sequence. Getting fairly close to where I was up to before.

Stole three new skills throughout the sequence which was pretty dandy. Beat the boss of such without dragonising this time around, which I guess was reasonably fun aside from their whole being able to one-turn-kill units late in the fight.

Etrian Odyssey - Up to the second strata.

Considerably better than I was expecting so far. Only things I can really complain about would be somewhat wonky enemy balancing and the restrictive inventory. Also how collecting while your inventory is full causes whatever was collected to be discarded without question and the collection charge to be wasted, which makes no sense whatsoever when every other situation I've come across where an item would be acquired while I have a full inventory either allows you to choose what to throw or prevents you from doing the action to get the item until you free space up manually.

As things stand the current enemies are outclassing my party a fair amount so it seems like some grinding is called for.

Crisis Core: Chapter 10, on the run from the law. Had to spam Death Blade to get out of Nibelheim; the third wave just has too many soldiers to beat through damage.

Got Goblin Punch in Gongaga and immediately made it into Costly Punch, so I've got my ultimate anti-boss weapon. I should probably start leveling up some stat boosters other than HP and MP.

Samurai Shodown Anthology:

SS1:  Beat with Wan-Fu.

SS2:  Beat with Neinhalt Sieger.

SS3:  Beat with Shizumaru.  Fuck this game, I'm never playing it again.

SS4:  Beat with Sogetsu.

SS5:  Beat with Mina.

SS6:  Beat with the greatest character ever to appear in a fighting game, U.S. President Andrew Jackson.  He doesn't fight for freedom, he fights for world domination.  GRANDU CANNON!!!

AT- Played through a boatload of this last night. Finished Phase 1, went into Phase 2. Was using Aurica, but found myself on Misha's path in Phase 2 since I was also using both Krusche and Jack. While I would rather have Aurica's insecurity over Misha's nails on a chalkboard, I'd rather have the characters I actually like. Don Leon is still better than anything in Misha's Cosmosphere. Was on 6 for Aurica, on 7 for Misha and haven't bothered doing it.

Speaking of, I'm failing to find anything decent about the game other than the Cosmosphere. It's a decent way of giving depth to the characters, abeit a bit forced. It's still somehow done with enough skill that it works and is interesting. The rest of the characters are alright. They have their moments, but otherwise are just meh. Lyner isn't nearly as bad as advertised though other than the expected harem main density syndrome. After Toradora, Lyner seems damn near on the ball.

The music is terrible. REALLY bad. The vocal battle tracks are especially painful. The battle system is... servicable but tedious on randoms. The game at least remains playable.

That's because you're only in Phase 2.
