Lyner isn't nearly as bad as advertised though other than the expected harem main density syndrome.

That's because you're only in Phase 2.

Phase 3 is profit!

So, I played Fallout. I should be playing the games I've borrowed before anything else, but JRPGness wasn't sounding very attractive this week and I wanted something different. Hence, twelve-year-old PCRPG.

First, the bad: polish, it is not there. Item management is a major hassle and combat never rises above tediousness. And there are some minor issues like NPCs just getting in the damn way all the time (there were a couple instances where I actually had to reload a game because the mooks had me stuck in the corner of a small room and wouldn't move; I suppose I could've just killed the NPCs, but they're useful as pack mules). Balance isn't great, either. I had a couple false starts due to investing points in skills that turned out to be just not useful. Seems like there are a very few important skills and the rest can go hang. Battle difficulty is based almost entirely on whether or not you get power armor; if you do, even swarms of super mutants can't really touch you. Though I guess making Fallout combat easier isn't necessarily a bad thing. Stealth/diplomacy was the most attractive option just for being gameplay skip, but it seemed like doing anything like a pacifist run requires prior knowledge of the game. It's easy enough just to march around in your suit of powered armor and cut everything to shreds with the plasma rifle.

For the record, because I'm sure Grefter at least is curious, Small Guns seemed to me like the no-brainer option for pumping skill points. They're the only firearms you find early on in the game and the .223 even outclasses quite a few of the energy weapons. I didn't use those much until I hit level 12 and got the Tag perk--which I promptly applied to energy weapons, followed by dumping all of that level's skill points into energy weapons, boosting it from around 50% to 150% in one level. I never used anything but the plasma rifle again. In conjunction with the perk that lowers your AP costs for firearms by one point, I could get three shots off in one round. Not much lived through that. Other perks chosen were the EXP and SP boosters at the early levels, and...I don't remember what at level 15, but that hardly mattered since it only happened in the Cathedral. Other top-tier skill is probably speech since more dialogue options is always a good thing.

Anyway, game mostly scores points for setting. I'm a sucker for post-apocalypse scenarios, so that's an automatic plus. Mutant hideouts were suitably eerie, though any place that throws files at you and lets you piece together the backstory is best (I enjoyed The Glow for this). Wouldn't say the game is stellar at worldbuilding, but it's competent and this is clearly its selling point. Fallout as a whole probably pulls something like an average rating from me. I will play Fallout 2 at some point, but likely not for a while.

Reloaded my Cathedral save a couple times to deal with the end in different ways--talking the Master to death, outright attacking him, skipping him and just blowing up the bomb. Pretty sure I'm not interested in coming back to this game, so I figured I'd see everything in the first go. Took all the NPCs with me to the Cathedral for old time's sake. Didn't expect them to live, and indeed the mutants eliminated them all with extreme prejudice (I was quite surprised to see one of the Follower goons make it to the second basement level there; Ian made it farthest, finally charging into the lower-floor robot swarm like an idiot).

Especially since you're with Misha, you should see really early in Phase 3 one of the biggest reasons IMO for the Lyner hate.

Yep, Fallout 1 is a huge mass of unbalanced combat. The guys in charge even admitted that stuff like the Turbo Plasma Rifle was outright broken. Of course, combat is not what the game is really about.

If you want a more mechanically-sound game that isn't quite as good in setting, Fallout 2 is probably your game.

Yep all pretty valid stuff.  I think you are really overlooking just how unique the degree of choice and variety in dialogue is and whatnot.  Glad you have played it and got at least some fun out of it though.  Spot on with the power gaming for skills.  Sooooo off on the perks though >_>  Skill and Exp boosters are horrible perks.

Crisis Core: Final dungeon, got all the goddess materia. I was going to take the long way around, but then I got killed trying to escape from yet another fight with three Evilgoyles and I said screw it. Time to finish this, then deal with the ridiculous number of missions still in the queue.

Oh, and got Bahamut Fury. The rematch is a complete bitch - he's only got three attacks that don't OHKO without Barrier, and two of them are gravity. Ow.

UPDATE: I really, really hate those angel thingies Genesis Avatar summons. Like, a lot.

Hm, Cap? I dislike SS3 too, but I'm curious to hear why you hate it compared to the other SS games.

If there's one thing SS series is known for, it's crappy hit detection.  You know, swinging your sword directly through a character's body when they're not blocking or anything and it whiffs.  Well, SS3 takes the crappy hit detection of 1 and 2 and multiplies it by 1000.

And the damage is all over the place.  You can literally die in two hits.  But the next round, those same two hits will do about 25% damage.  No consistency whatsoever.

At least the boss was easy.  Well, all SS bosses are easy, but he's easier than normal because he does. not. block.  The only gimmick is that you have to beat him 3 rounds instead of 2.

FFI: On the way to the Marsh Cave. Anyone who says you need Lv 5 to beat Garland deserves to be punched. I beat him at Lv 2. Using the standard speed-run easy team of two Fighters, Black Mage & White Mage. If people actually care, they can follow progress in more detail on my games blog. =P

While I agree that being lv 5 isn't needed, you are using two fighters which make the game far easier. I've reloaded on Garland myself actually but that was more due to me not wanting to miss out on exp as Garland always seems to focus on my weaker characters killing them.

Dynasty warriors 6 empires - On one hand Koei put in a few things that improved on what DW5E's did. On the other they took out most of what actually made 5E good in the first place.
Overall the game is surprisingly frustrating at points. I first played on normal as an officer to get the hang of the game, which resulted in the game being too easy. I then played as a ruler on normal to see the differance and it was staggering.

My invasion of Xu Chang took a full on 29 miniutes as Lu Bu. Also whoever invented the idea of having so many Lieutenants needs to be fired. Its just simply not fun when I have to deal with Cao Cao, Dun, Dian Wei, their hoard of 300 meatbags and 15 or so Lieutenants.
On paper a good idea but not when the enemy can easily overrun you with them.

Yeah, but I've seen guides and heard people say that you should have a team with two Fighters -and- be Lv 5+. Seems kinda needless to me.

FFI: Earth Cave. Fucking stun-lock enemies, screw you. Can't get to Lich because my Black Mage keeps dying on the floor beneath the panel, forcing me to retreat for revival/healing. Dammit.

I'm assuming from "stun-lock" enemies you're playing the NES version, because there's a bug there that makes stun 100% accurate if your HP is below 300.

Really? I could swear I've seen physical stun fail.

Anyway, never heard anybody seriously suggest you need to level up for Garland. Marsh Cave, maybe, but not Garland. (They're wrong too, you don't need to level up in FF1 ever as long as your team is remotely competent.)

Crisis Core: Well, that was about as good an ending as I've ever seen in a video game. It was a bit overlong, I guess? Hard to complain about that, though. Damned effective, even when you know what's coming, both in general (it's not like it was exactly a secret) and in specific (I saw Meeple play the last fight at the minimeet last November).

Overall? Just a really damn good game. Battle system, characters, style (good God the style)...the story's not spectacular, but like I've said in chat, they were between a rock and a hard place there - creating a completely new story that just happens to star Zack would feel tacked-on, while tying things to the events of FF7 itself, like they went with, feels redundant since you're expanding on a work that was written to stand alone. So instead they used it mainly as a backdrop for the characters, and it worked very well. Zack's a great main and his relationship with Aerith is really well handled, and the way they expand on Sephiroth makes his FF7 self make more sense.

Honestly, the only thing in the entire game that I can muster any kind of complaint about is the encounter system, and if that's not the opposite of damning with faint praise I don't know what is.

Yeah, I'm playing a rom of the NES version, but it wasn't that it always hit... Just.. a hell of a lot. >.> And there were a fair few enemies, too.

Well, damn. I've been levelling up a lot for Earth Cave and now for Gurugu Volcano.
Went to the peninsula NE of Pravoka and started killing stuff with high-level magic there. Characters ~Lv20, hopefully good enough to actually have all of them survive the fucking mountain. >.>

Cross Edge:

Considering the power of the twinking, the bosses in this game really stand up to it, even if in unusual ways. For example this last boss wasn't too impressive on raw durability, but he countered damage, so if you blew all your attacks on him and then let him get a turn he could ruin your ****.

Current party is Felicia/York/Aurica/Misha. Felicia/York handle physical damage, Aurica and Misha rip stuff apart whenever they aren't healing. Misha's status/HP healing move is pretty danged useful in this game, what with how items use AP.

Major complaints: Randoms are a little too on the easy side, you can't reasonably use a lot of people despite the game throwing way too many PCs at you (and forcing some of them in certain battles), and the lack of scenes for some characters (The AT folks don't get much spotlight).

Still a surprisingly fun little game.

Regarding FF1, yeah, you don't ever really need to grind or level beyond what's given to you in order to progress, if your team is competent (ie you have at least one Fighter <.<), what usually gets you in FF1 is things levels don't really help against, like "Sorcerers get first strike -> instant Death physical -> splat"; Levels only help so much against that kind of cheese.

PW1 - Yeah, I've been playing this. Holy shit, the writing is so sexy. Meanwhile, I just FAQ unnecessary gameplay because really, why bother when I just want to get to that beefy, sexy writing? At least, I just Press all statements because they lead to more writing. It's like a vicious circle.

Currently at the start of case 4. I don't think anything can top case 3's first day, though. Wendy Oldbag is glory.

Also -

* Can I switch control to a different character in battle?
* Why can't use items apart from Life Bottles on allies?
* How to properly utilise free run/can I use Artes during it?
* Should I be controlling Estelle?

I've tried reading the manual but it doesn't make sense. I need to know so I can stop raaaging. Thanks again peeps =-)

I'm controlling Rita at the moment (I soloed the Golem with her >_>) but since I'm not used to this system I'm thinking I should have better control over healing/supports I dunno~
