I think Tal took a very regimented approach to giving stat-ups by trying to distribute them equally according to points(while ignoring Str for mages). That should solve any problems that might arise, I think.

Kinda helps the folks with the PP+ on level up skill, but they deserve to get the boost anyway.

Why yes, I shall enjoy playing you until final dungeon, Persona 4. Why yes, I shall find moderate challenge in your bosses and like the nifty tricks. I shall also appreciate the characters for what they are (Teddie, you joker). However, I shall not enjoy running into an SP/money drain, nor shall I enjoy fighting a boss and then having you glitch up and freeze on me the battle after!

SP drains in P4 endgame? Just drop a Soma, you're not using those on anything else this late.

EDIT: The glitching is something else entirely.

It's just that endgame skills are costly, and I only have one Soma left. Though with three more Rise levels, I can get a full-heal by basically just running around the earlier dungeons rushing randoms. (Yay for end-battle heals!) My main complaint was that the first time I fought the mini-boss, it killed my main before I could do anything because it was too fast and I wasn't thinking I'd need to set up against ID, and then afterwards the glitch-freeze. Just an annoying waste of time, really.

That's the first I've heard of anyone having problems against Evil Kenji. Heh. You just spam L3s on him. If your party is at L75-76, you'll slaughter him because you'll get amps more or less universally. I was around that range when I got to him, but worst comes to worst, I think having Trumpeter with Debil will trivialize him nicely. Don't be afraid to spend that Soma, though, the boss after Kenji is far more capable.

EDIT: Also, L4s are -not- worth the SP they cost. Stick with the L3s if you need to spread Souji's resources around.

Ugh. So much SP for a single-shot spell. Truly cringe-worthy.

Yeah, I'm a few levels lower. Like, 73-74. But I really just don't have the cash, and I wasn't nice enough to the fox. (Definite lesson for next time) When I'm at 70-100% SP, yeah, the bosses are generally pretty piddly.

What personas learn Spell Master?

Alice and Odin off the top of my head do, a few more should have that as well. Odin is generally a wonderful persona to have, by the way.

Although, now that we're mentioning this stuff. Did you grab that Chakra Ring in Heaven?

(South Moundtop, I'm looking at YOU.)

People are making that fight sounds harder than it actually is.

Surviving the eight turns required isn't hard, I agree, however, there is literally nothing you can do about enemy troops deciding that they're all going to go first and cast Flame Naga and fuck you over regardless of what strategy you take.  The battle relies on stupid shit like that for difficulty, which is just bad design.

Not when you can freely distribute your state points, as well as that hp growth mechanic. Significant difference can occur depends on how much and how early you assign the states.

You can freely distribute them, but PCs having different growths in stats point to a "DL-legal" stat distribution pretty nicely.

Fallout 2: Okay, this is annoying. I'm trying to get through the Enclave the stealthy way, but a select few of the security robots decide to attack me on sight even though I'm wearing power armor. Not all of them (I can walk right past the ones in the detention area), just some. If it was just the robots, it wouldn't be a problem, since the bronze mechs are completely nonthreatening by this point, but when they attack, so does everything else on the floor. In the case of the president's level, the mechs guarding the staircase to the power plant floor go hostile as soon as I approach the stairs. And I have to reach that floor to either disable the computer or bully the tech into overloading the reactor. When I come back out and try to run back through the president's floor, I get swarmed by power armor goons with gauss rifles. Those things fucking hurt even with advanced power armor MK. 2 equipped. I cannot survive the run back to the opposite stairway. (Apparently, I also need plastic explosives if I want to disable the computer. I didn't bring any, but apparently there are some in the armory...but guess what? The robots there are among the random few that always attack on sight.)

I don't why the fuck the game is doing this, and I really don't think it's supposed to. I've checked a couple FAQs and none of them mention anything about robots in specific areas of the Enclave going hostile. I left my allies in S.F. and I've got power armor on, so the mechs should treat me as an Enclave goon just like everyone else on the oil rig.

I might just have to come back with the whole gang and do it kill 'em all style (I actually did try this at first, but the electrified floor area made it too much of a pain) if I can't figure out what's causing this. At least I've already seen all the conversations with the Enclave NPCs by this point.

Try assassinating the President and then taking his access key. You can use computer terminals to set the turrets to anti-insurgent mode (which means they kill everything FOR you).

Fallout 2: Finished. I'll say this for the endgame: they may throw power armor and nightmarishly strong weapons at you like candy in the last few hours, but you absolutely need them if you're going to tackle the Enclave cowboy style. Clearing that place was brutal. The detention area wasn't a problem, but the armory? Oh god. I was going to leave that area alone, until I realized I'd have to come back that way after triggering the reactor meltdown. Had to cheese it out and abuse the exit grid to take healing breaks and tackle the goons in waves. When you've got four or five enemies wielding gauss rifles, someone's going to die fast, and they all seemed to go out of their way to target the MC.

Ending montage had a couple of headdesk-inducing moments. Not because of quality concerns, but because the events described were things I went out of my way to prevent during the game and they wound up happening anyway. Vault City enslaves the ghouls? Fuck. It did always seem like there was something I'd left unfinished there--Gordon's plan to sell power to Vault City really sounded like a sidequest, but nothing ever came of it. The second thing that gets me...is something I have no freaking clue why it was even there. The ending narration claimed that I wiped out the deathclaws at Vault 13. ...The FUCK? I saved them from starvation, and the Enclave killed them all afterwards. It's just insulting to say I'm responsible. Was there actually some way to prevent that from happening that I overlooked? [NOTE: I just went back and checked my list of kills. I wasted four deathclaws in the whole game. The boss fight at the military base accounts for all of these.]

Were the credits supposed to be silent or was that another feature bug? Also...Jeffrey Jones was President Richardson? Totally didn't call that.

Anyway, the ending lacks anything with the punch of getting chucked out of the vault in Fallout 1, but the game as a whole is much better. It is incredibly immersive, moreso than the vast majority of games I've played, with a very wide variety of quests that always have several possible solutions, all of this backed up by quality writing. The Enclave is kind of funny. They're a sad bunch of has-beens...or would be, if they weren't poised to wipe out humanity. I have to appreciate the fact that the ghoul settlement is pretty much the sanest bunch of people you find in the wasteland.

Combat is mechanically unchanged and still quite slow-paced (d'oh), but on the whole much improved by better balance and allies actually being useful. (Of course, it helps that I scaled up to the brokenness this time. I'd guess that you can get power armor right after leaving the first town, but you'd have to know exactly where it is. Flying in the dark, only following the chain of NPC gossip, Navarro is one of the last places you're going to hear about.) This is important for me since I really don't dig solo action in RPGs. Even if operating a full team isn't always the best idea in Fallout 2, it's at least a workable option this time (one I usually took because working as a group is more personally appealing to me).

Some interface issues linger, though. Item management is just the ick, man. Talk to someone every time you need to access their inventory, talk to someone every time you want to remove them from the party/add them to it/change their AI...for the love of god, can you just give me a menu? How hard is that? Minor maintenance took up far more time that it had to and this remains my main beef with the game. Whether it (and the multitude of bugs) hold the game back from 10/10, I haven't decided, but it's certainly the only thing that could.

Various final MC data!

Starting stats: 5 ST/6 PE/5 EN/10 CH/8 IN/10 AG/4 LU.
Ending stats: 9 ST/8 PE/5 EN/10 CH//9 IN/10 AG/3 LU.

-Strength boost is solely from power armor bonus, perception boost is from BoS surgery + a perk, intelligence boosts is from BoS surgery...and I'm not sure what caused my luck to drop. I'm guessing it was allowing the NCR Hubologist to perform a zeta-scan on me, as it was around that part of the game that I noticed the loss.

Initial traits: Gifted and Small Frame, because anything that boosts base stats is excellent to start with, I think.

Perks: Bonus Rate of Fire, Gain Perception, Kama Sutra Master, Mysterious Stranger, Presence, Sharpshooter, Speaker, Stonewall, Tag (small arms)

-Mixed bag. Ones that upped my effectiveness with guns were quite valuable for combat-heavy quests. KSM was there for laughs. Presence was there because your selection sucks at level 3. MS was picked for novelty and was mostly useless (though the guest does at least get better weapons as the game progresses, I noticed; still mostly irrelevant since random encounters are such a minor part of Fallout). Stonewall was a late-game pickup that I nabbed just because I'd grown tired of folks knocking me down and stealing my AP--the MC has the best damage output, I don't want her missing attacks in a tough fight. Gain Perception...well, I hit level 27 immediately before the last fight (such as it is--the turrets do most of the work), so it hardly mattered what I took. I went with GP just because I knew there was still a Giant Mook to kill, and since shooting people in the eyes had been my best bet for shutting down Enclave troopers fast, I figured anything that could boost accuracy was better than most of the other options.

Karma: 1450 (Savior of the Damned)

-Yeah, I'm a goody-two-shoes. Well, in some regards. The ones that matter for karma, at least.

Titles collected:

Champion
Married
Prizefighter
Porn Star
Gravedigger
Gigolo
Sexpert
Made Man (Wright)

-Gravedigger...came about because some random New Reno sidequest led me to believe that I was supposed to look for something in a grave at Golgotha, so I just started digging there willy-nilly. Started finding money, weapons and armor, and figured I'd just clear the whole yard since it was turning out to be pretty lucrative. >.> Only time in the game I actually did dig up graves, but it was clearly more than enough. Pretty sure the other titles speak for themselves or should have obvious causes discernible from my previous posts on the game.

Interesting career I had there. Pugilist, "actress", mafia hitman, law enforcement officer. Yeah, I was a cop too! Admittedly only within the jurisdiction of Redding, but if you screw up on my turf, you will feel the backhand of porn star justice.

~

Various combat/NPC notes! As much as I wanted to avoid combat and diplomify my way through the game, I was also trying to do every sidequest I could find and fighting is just unavoidable in some of them. Also, some people just need to fucking die (slavers/raiders in general. Lynette too, though I never did kill her because I would've had to take on the entirety of Vault City afterward).

Nina (MC), AKA The Chosen One, AAKA "Ripper", AAAKA "Lisa Lix," AAAAKA "Ice Queen" (I love this game's pseudonyms): Used the sharpened spear for the longest damn time on account of both lingering pacifism and my lacking money to get a decent weapon. Went straight to the .223 when I finally found one and had managed to bring my gun skills to a respectable level. Final weapon = motherfucking gauss rifle. That is one badass gun. 10 AP + Bonus Rate of Fire = I can get two aimed shots a round. Two hits to the eyes gives me a very good chance of either getting a horrific crit or blinding the enemy. Sniping is good times.

Sulik: Was pretty useless once enemies acquired decent armor and thus became too durable to be threatened by common melee weapons, and is just terribly unreliable with an SMG (well, unless you're relying on him to gib your whole party with burst fire). And he couldn't equip the mega power fist, which was disappointing. ...Then I gave him the super sledge I found at Navarro and he turned into an unholy terror, a crit-happy kamikaze who attacked three or four times a round and more often than not hurled enemies halfway across the screen when doing so. Nerfed somewhat by having to face power armor at the Enclave, but still did pretty well just for the sheer number of attacks and the frequency with which he'd ignore defense.

Cassidy: Generally solid. I had him using shotguns for most of the game. Which I'm sure is suboptimal, but it was quite a while before I got a decent rifle. Actually, he wound up with the pulse pistol in the end. Generally a good gun and he can get off two shots a round with it (I wanted to give him a spare gauss pistol, but didn't because the ammo was so rare and I wanted to hoard it for the MC. Little did I know that I'd find hundreds upon hundreds of bullets at the oil rig). Idly, Cassidy's oft-repeated line about being named after a comic book character has me wondering who that was. The only one that springs to mind is Black Tom Cassidy, but a very minor X-Men villain seems an odd choice for a reference. Does fulfill the requirement of bastardry, though.

Marcus: Solid at first, then awesome once I found a plasma rifle. Inability to equip armor is eventually crippling, though. Enclave troopers could rip him to shreds in no time. Also, he's so damn slow that he was often lagging far behind whenever the MC and the rest of the crew stumbled across enemies in an unfamiliar dungeon.

Goris: See Marcus, subtract plasma rifle. Okay, he does have a lot of AP, so he can move far and get in a lot of attacks, but he struggles to deal with high-quality armor. So in practice, he was a worse Sulik. Again, lack of armor is a horrific weakness if you're trying to take the Enclave through brute force. Idly, it still amuses me that Vault City makes you kick Marcus out of your party before letting you in, but they're just fine with admitting the reptilian killing machine. (Hey, he's wearing a cloak and everything, he must be okay!)

K-9: Probably would be good if you had for much more of the game, yes. He did manage to get one level-up while in my party (Navarro/military base/San Fran/Enclave = truckload of XP getting dumped on you), but I think that's it. 16 AP is pretty awesome, but his damage just wasn't that great even when he got the full five attacks a turn. Best I could usually hope for was that he'd get a lucky crit or knock someone over. Being non-human, lack of armor is of course also a problem. Not LVP though, because of...

Miria: Screams in terror and runs, mostly. It was rare that she tried to shoot anything, and she almost never connected when she did. Again, I'm sure the designers expected your spouse to stick around for all of five minutes (it can't even level), but I am a stubborn fool.

I never recruited Lenny, Dogmeat, or SkyNet. Vic got left in Vault 13 around halfway through the game. Trader Vic's is a pretty cool thing to name a character after, though (even though I have never been to the restaraunt and only know of it because it was mentioned in that one Warren Zevon song).

...Ah yes, I almost forgot Myron. Little snot forced his way into the party when I went to talk him into abandoning the New Reno crime families. He was almost immediately gibbed in the shootout at Salvatore's place and I decided that I didn't care. World's a better place without him.

~

Guess I should finish up Crisis Core now.

I actually did, but I couldn't kill him without attracting the unwanted attention of every guard on the floor. Counter-insurgency mode also only works in the foyer, I believe.

VP2.  y'know, I was just playing this and thinking, "gee, this game sure is good, but it's a shame it doesn't have that one thing that made VP1 so special.  and then it happened.  I arrived at the Palace of the Dragon (or whatever they're calling it now).  And it EVEN still has obnoxious statue traps and a punishment zone filled with poison.  Thank you, VP, my life is now complete.

I hate the swamp more than any other dungeon in the game. Still, I can easily see getting to the Palace and just going, "Fuck, not again." Just because you're likely to have poison cures leftover from swamp preparations doesn't mean it's not still annoying to get statused constantly.

Some of the enemies there are a nuisance, yes. I ran whenever I encountered those damned torch things.

Hm, that was the breaking point in VP2 for me. AKA where randoms started rolling over and dying. Just a quick heads up: one of the randoms in the palace drops a Green Fire Rune, which will be the last piece you need to learn Toughness. Once you learn Toughness, you'll be able to basically double your durability. Also hope you have Psychosoma by now on your whole party. And don't forget to use the Fire Blessing sealstone for extra shiny Flame Shot. If you're so inclined, Stone Hurler's Wrath is completely worth it as a sealstone if you're using two archers and up.

Super-stim him to death. Use six or seven of them on him and then wait one hour, and he will die.

And if counter-insurgency mode isn't working, you can still just turn turrets off.

Same as Snow, Palace of the Dragon was where randoms stopped being threatening at all to me.

Anyway...

XF - Beat Ragu. Suitably superbossy. I knew the basics of what had to be done (since his offence is so gross, DON'T LET HIM GET A TURN... which involves using Intrude and MP restoration forever), pieced the rest together myself. The gloves, of course, came off - I haven't been using Debilitator or Turn Shift this playthrough, but fuck that, Ragu deserves no mercy. Here's what I did, for those curious: (gameplay spoilers, duh)

Alexia as Emulator with Sacred Slayer, Extremist, High Cavalier OCs. Leader's Duty and Royal Fencer EQ, though the last is filler. Equipped with a decent weapon.

Generic Emulator with High Cavalier and Excavator OCs. Mag+25%, Elementalist EQ, Crisis Conserve MP, and Caution (the last isn't really needed, but helps more than anything else I had available). Equipped with the best book and no armour. Four Magic Berries in inventory, 9 more waiting in storage.

Alexia in position 5, Generic in position 3. Other positions would work, no doubt.

Okay. Emulator is key because it has Conserve MP and MP Regeneration which is a ridiculous boon if you're spamming Intrude. Alexia couldn't get more than 4 uses of Intrude off (usually either 2 or 3) in any other class and still have the MP needed for her other tasks, she could get 6 off as an Emulator. Yeah. It's even more important for the other PC, because Emulator ALSO has Exploit Weakness. Granted, if you've mastered Emulator and can pull these abilities out of it, then Gadgeteer is a better choice because of Item Effect Up. As is, Emulator was clearly the choice.

Anyway, Alexia goes first, uses Intrude 5 times. Walks up, uses Debilitator on Ragu (necessary for sealing off his skillz, and lowering his defences). Walks up again, waits. Uses Fragile on Ragu. Takes turns 4 and 5 to reach the generic Emulator. Slashes her once; it's a critical hit and lowers her to about 40% HP. Had it not been a crit I'd have Intruded and attacked again, oh well. No big. Turn Shift with the final turn to pass things to the Emulator, who takes all remaining actions in this battle.

Emulator starts using Intrude. As soon as it isn't a waste of the item, she walks up to the lava tile in front of her and uses a Magic Berry. Continues to spam Intrude, taking lava damage. Once she's in critical I move her forwards toward Ragu, using a Magic Berry so as not to waste a movement turn. Crisis is important because it reduces her MP costs by a further 25%, so that Intrude only costs 36 and the attack spells only cost 18. Win.

Anyway, my strategy from here is the same. Intrude a lot. I learn the hard way (possibly costing me the battle) that you can only Intrude so many times before the game complains; it's a waste of a turn if the turn gauge is entirely the face of the Intrude user. I use Magic Berries to keep my MP up, using In&Out to replenish them if I run out. Whenever I have a full screen of turns coming up and enough MP to take to the offensive (at least 108, but I tend to have more to be safe), I unleash 6 consecutive Hydro Pressures, doing about 3000 damage with my setup. I need four of these waves to win. Paying for this takes all 13 of my Magic Berries (though I only barely needed the 13th). I run out of VP during the battle but it doesn't matter since VP damage can't kill.

Probably the easiest overall way to beat Ragu? If you already have a mastered Emulator or Gadgeteer or Extremist then there are much more productive things you can do (Command Critical + Exploit Weakness + MP cost reduction + Freeze Gem+1 spam should make for lulz) but the above setup didn't need anything more than OCs, provided that you have one character who is mastered Elementalist by this point, which to me at least seems likely since MAG+25% is such a broadly applicable skill (even if you don't have it, you'd just need a deeper item stash to compensate). Needs a decent amount of Magic Berries, is its only weakness, but hey, Path of the Unjust does exist, and it's how certainly the best place to farm for evade-boosting items anyway.

Funny, I am inclined to think Alexia may be the second worst of the human plot PCs overall, but she's the only one who matters here!

Storywise, 4-6 is up next. Have I mentioned I like lategame Katrina a lot?

Also, since it needs to be said at every opportunity, Edna is quite possibly the stupidest character I've ever seen in an RPG, or at least the one whose stupidity has the most disasterous effects. Never fails to bring a smile to my face.

the eight turns required isn't hard, I agree, however, there is literally nothing you can do about enemy troops deciding that they're all going to go first and cast Flame Naga and fuck you over regardless of what strategy you take.  The battle relies on stupid shit like that for difficulty, which is just bad design.

...Ooooh, NOW I remember that fight.  As far as I remember, it's mostly just a matter of having your random troops obliterate the boss's non-steel support, while timing your three main units to be in range for their two-square movement (so they only move one square) and just defending like crazy.

It's actually a really easy battle once you figure out the trick.  I went back and did that battle three times after the first time I did it.  Passed it every time.

On that we agree. I didn't find a whole lot of use for her, though Ragnar still takes last place.

Try assassinating the President and then taking his access key. You can use computer terminals to set the turrets to anti-insurgent mode (which means they kill everything FOR you).

I actually did, but I couldn't kill him without attracting the unwanted attention of every guard on the floor. Counter-insurgency mode also only works in the foyer, I believe.

Super-stim him to death. Use six or seven of them on him and then wait one hour, and he will die.

And if counter-insurgency mode isn't working, you can still just turn turrets off.

That...is a really random way of killing someone, but it does seem to work. It never occurred to me to use healing items on an enemy, and certainly not that enough of them would kill someone. Is there any indication in-game that this sort of thing can happen? (If it's in the manual, well, I haven't got one. I actually didn't pirate the game, but my copy doesn't have instructions, either. Not that I ever read those anyway.)

And it was never the turrets that were attacking me (I could walk right by any of them), but a select few of the robot guards stationed around the building. Though the difference is really irrelevant--the presidential override does stop these robots from attacking me. I could just never use it when it mattered before because combat mode made me unable to access a computer. Killing the president quietly facilitates everything greatly by just never triggering combat mode.

All this reminds me of why I prefer to run/talk through things whenever possible. It's so much faster.

Really? I was thinking Felius took last place. Ragnar has Hyper Attack and Orbital Ring. Felius has what, exactly? I've been playing him with axes and Upper Hand but this isn't really impressive as far as physical games go (and suffers horribly once Drop Kick becomes available since that has a way better multiplier to make up for the fact that it can miss).... Shockwave is pathetic compared to the other special characters' MT physicals. He's not terrible or anything, but everyone else offers something unique and powerful (Ragnar - Hyper, Alexia - Leader's Duty, Labyrinthia - Warp and Replica, Levin - Execrate and Blast, Clarissa - Encourage and Sacrifice) and he really doesn't.

Not when you can freely distribute your state points, as well as that hp growth mechanic. Significant difference can occur depends on how much and how early you assign the states.

You can freely distribute them, but PCs having different growths in stats point to a "DL-legal" stat distribution pretty nicely.

And how do you find a universal agreement on how those states is going to get assigned? For example, knowing how the hp mechanics work, Vit is always my top priority no matter how bad the growth rate is, and I'd rather sacrifice some offense for that due to the gain of hp in late gain is much better reward.

I remember none steel soldiers are pretty easy to dispose... they usually die before Flame Naga can become a threat. Just abuse the support arrows, they do the job perfectly.

I dunno. We've got Fire Emblem ranked, and it has random distribution. I don't see why the general assumption of "points go in lowest growth" is particularly more awkward from a ranking perspective.

Alice and Odin off the top of my head do, a few more should have that as well. Odin is generally a wonderful persona to have, by the way.

Although, now that we're mentioning this stuff. Did you grab that Chakra Ring in Heaven?

Sadly, Odin requires a maxed S.Link, which I didn't grab. I also never once encountered Alice. Though I do have Sarasvati with Invigorate 2.

No, I didn't grab the Chakra Ring. What's it do?

Alice is a special fusion.  Chakra Ring halves SP costs, I think.

Oh, so you probably need another max S.Link to get her.

I'm guessing it's an accessory, too?
