Mana Kehmia: Found the last bonus dungeon monster... and didn't complete the Encyclopedia.  Fuck it, ending rush go.

Most bonus dungeon monsters don't count for the encyclopedia, unless it was actually one of the uniques.  It's also possible you missed a job/course monster earlier on.

---

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Mid Day 3.  Midori is unbalanced.  That is all.

8 uniques, 5 bosses.  I grabbed all the courses that I didn't pick on my first playthrough.

Crisis Core: Final tier of Cave missions! Just three to go before I meet Minerva.

Not sure if I'll backtrack for the ones I missed. I won't need them to hit 99999 HP (Got 80K now), and I've got all the gear I need. Woo Heike's Soul and all, but as far as things that'll help me kill Minerva, I'm not really seeing the point.

Beat XF again yesterday. Not much to say, game rules, etc. Random notes...

-This playthrough, I arbitrarily banned myself from using Turn Shift, Debilitate, Slow Down, and Cancel Strike (although I was using Book Levin so Cancel Strike doesn't really work anyway). Not necessarily the cheapest moves in the game but they all kinda rub me the wrong way. Exception noted for Ragu. At a certain point I also stopped using revival, too. The net effect was that the second playthrough was able to stay roughly at the challenge level of the first, which is good.

-Highlights of the endgame... well, the biggest one was probably the Chelle battle, in which I was reduced to a solo Extremist Felius. Felius got Predator Barraged off the plateau (even though it missed) and almost died from fall damage, which for the record is 10x(Height difference between your Climb and the fall). Since Extremists only have 2 Climb he actually COULD NOT GET OUT of the whole he was in, but fortunately I was able to lure Chelle, and the last Forsaken Mutant down. Problem: said Forsaken Mutant is physically immune! Solution? Use Felius' last remaining MP to Feeble Mind then Switch it to death (I don't normally equip Excavator OC, but it's useful in this map for the hidden enemies). From there it was a matter of a MP/VP-less Felius constantly moving and attacking Chelle. 900+ evade = he can't be hit, though with his axe it took a long time to win anyway. Hilarity.

-Extremist, unshockingly, is a class I underrated before. Debil aside, their stats are solid enough, Command Critical is handy (except against the Royal Knights!), Concentrate looks good on paper (though all the mastery skills of the final classes are badass... besides HC's I guess)... but honestly, it's EVA+25% and their armour that is the best thing about them. Evade is totally the best XF defensive stat. I likely rate the class above Nightstalker now, though Emulator remains the favourite of the group, with Exploit Weakness and Conserve MP both being awesome in addition to the broken skillset. Execrate Widespread Petrify = lol randoms.

-I swear, the final boss is the game designers' way of saying "yeah, we couuuld have made better AI for this game". She seems to be literally the only enemy in the game who consistently goes for the biggest weaknesses, instead of just picking a random element. Hell, she's the only one who seems to target AoE attacks intelligently (e.g. centred in an empty panel). And likes closing into melee to hit people with spells if it gets around their shield reduction. Lost once partially because I underestimated the OHKO potential against generics. Fortunately, her AI -still- isn't that amazing... the physical attack vs. Extremist is happy times.

Onto VPDS. I'm somewhere over two hours in but will withhold initial thoughts for now.

Crisis Core again: Minerva is TOAST. Started out as a hellishly difficult fight because everything she did hit for 99,999 damage. I still put up a decent fight with tons of Phoenix Down spam, until she pulled out Judgement Arrow, which also hit for 99,999 and canceled Reraise at the same time. Yeah, not happening.

So I took advantage of those hand MAG+lots DMW materia you get in the missions leading up to this one to make SPR+100 and VIT+100 materia for cheap, and suddenly everything she did was survivable (except Flash Slash) and instead of being a way to make the fight balanced, the 99 Phoenix Downs made it a pushover. 200 Costly Punches later, she died to the almighty power of CACTUAR. It's a shame; without those materia being handed to you on a silver platter, the fight really would have lived up to its hype.

So yeah, game's smashed into a hundred pieces. Still awesome.

So I finally buckled down to finish the latest 3 expansions for Fallout 3 lately.  Broken Steel and Point Lookout are good examples of purchaseable DLC, while the Pitt glitched to hell and back.  It's just this game that my 360 freezes on constantly.  I struggled with the constant freeze issues and managed to complete every quest in the game, finally to be done with it.  And what do I get.....

GODDAMN RED RING OF DEATH!

*cue Grefter's mocking here* ;_;

I picked up WA2 on the PSN today so I can play monthly shitty game.  Took freaking forever to download though.

The PC version won't run on my friend's Geforce 7800 card despite the minimum requirements is the 6600 series or something like that, but he can get LAST FUCKING REMNANT running well on medium settings.

So it's Bethesda being almost as dumb as Valve in getting shit to run on systems.

It's not his card that's the problem. I have a Geforce 7800 in mine and it runs fine.

Crisis Core: Banora. Grabbed about half of the plot materia, fought something that must have been a boss just because it had a lot of HP, stopped playing when the battery ran out. I gather I'm close to the end, so I'll likely finish the game today.

~

SoA: No sound, but I'm playing it anyway. Figured I'd just do what I did when I got tired of hearing FF1&2 and make the soundtrack Beethoven instead. Anyway, just had the first ship battle. Game seems fun enough.

I am forced to wonder why Air Pirates are called Air Pirates, though. There don't seem to be traditional oceans anywhere, so one would think that Air Pirates are the only kind of pirates this world has. So why don't people just call them "pirates"? Whatever, game clearly isn't interested in being anything but pure sugar, so I probably shouldn't ask silly questions.

May as well ask now: Piastol is an optional boss, I gather? She's not permanently missable or anything, is she?

She's not missable.  The game does, for her first fight, beat you over the head with going to fight her, but if you don't she'll wait.  And, to a degree, scale up (SoA optionals all do, except maybe the super random)

SoA: The person we just met fifteen minutes ago betrayed us?! THIS IS UNPOSSIBLE.

To the party's credit, they do what almost no other RPG parties have the sense to do in such a situation: immediately beat the crap out of the traitor and reclaim the macguffin. Admittedly I have to dock them a few points for discussing their next move right in front of said villain afterward, but hey, it's a start.

Larso fight was weird. I decided to stomp the kid first because I didn't want him spamming Drilnos the whole damn fight and because Barta's damage had trouble breaking my regen. Then Legendary Punch's figures just went freaking haywire and it started overkilling people. I'm not sure what was up with that. It ranged from doing a measly 600 to just breaking 4k. At first I thought it had something to do with how much HP one of the enemies had lost, but that clearly wasn't it since it went up and down constantly. Tough fight by the game's standards. That pyramid boss, for example? Just got viciously brutalized.

Stopped after crossing the South Ocean and reaching Horteka. Argh, ID-whore randoms.

EDIT: Also, "Drachma has joined your party...again." Ahaha, lampshade hanging.

VPDS - Just reached Chapter 4. Decided this was far enough in to start talking about the game. I didn't really want to because my reaction to the game was... not exactly a good one even from the start, but at this point it's pretty clear the game isn't going to recover and become something I heap praise on, so here goes!

Strange game. Good concepts, but the execution is... lackluster would be an understatement. Let's start with gameplay.

I like SRPGs! I like VP! Mixing them should give you something great, right? Apparently not. The SRPG half of the game is too primitive and sluggish to be of any real interest. The VP part is fine, though... the worst execution of it I've seen? Probably due to the graphics, VP comboing fluidity relies on this more than I realised. But beyond the fact that neither half of the system impresses alone, the real problem is they don't co-exist well. Part of this can be blamed on load times when transitioning between the battle screen and the SRPG screen (load times on the DS, guys?) but the VP part slows down the SRPG part too much for it to be enjoyable, and vice versa. I'd much rather have multi-round battles separated by stretches of puzzling platforming than single-round skirmishes separated by an uninspired SRPG.

Also a bother is the Sin system. VPDS is already a pretty poor SRPG, as mentioned - primitive and filled with enemies who just sit outside your range. Sin rewards inefficiency, where you want to spend as much time overkilling something as possible instead of efficiently handing it out to as many targets as possible. Further rewarding inefficiency is the AP regen system, where you can just sit outside the enemy range and regain it. Since they don't attack you for some reason. Soo yeah. After going from one SRPG (FE's bonus experience) to another (SRW's battle masteries) to another (XF's VP) that rewarded efficiency, I've come to expect it. One that rewards bad play like this is just baffling.

And then of course there's the fact that any hard battle has an instant win button. I'm not really too enamoured of this. Sadly it's not even a very good gameplay skip... the one battle I plumed someone in still took about 20 minutes to beat (there was never any chance at all I'd lose, mind). Because, as mentioned, the game is too slow.

Aesthetic concerns! The game is ugly. This isn't terrible, I don't really mind much, just I expect deliciously pretty out of VP. The character art is good, at least. Music... well, hearing all the old VP dungeon themes turned in to SRPG battle themes is amusing, at least.

Story concerns! Well, once again, interesting premise. Like with VP1 it tried something unique, this time featuring a main character who, in a wicked perversion of VP1, kills his followers to obtain his goals. Neat idea, needs excellent writing to pull off though. By nature, Wyl is detestable - crying at the sky about the valkyrie would be pathetic even if we didn't know Lenneth personally and thus, how wrong he is. Revenge is a shitty character motivation in general, KILLING YOUR ALLIES in order to accomplish revenge even worse. Wyl never seems to reflect or react to what he's doing, though. In fact, it's almost glossed over entirely, to the point where Wyl's darkness is enshrouded in a baffling cloud of apathetic stupor. Instead, the writers treat us to a boring tale of political intrigue in Artolia. What the fuck, guys? You have an idea like this, you stick with it, and you write it well. Wyl could have been one of the best main characters in an RPG; as is, he's among the worst. And like VP1, there uh isn't a consistent supporting cast. Storywise, the game is a chain of non sequiturs, perhaps owing to a poor implementation of its gameplay system. As an example, to start Chapter 4 I am suddenly fighting with a bunch of rebels in lava caves! This has nothing to do with what happend in Chapter 3, where I was a lone mercenary out to hunt down a thief who stole my dad's sword (I did reclaim it, granted)! I think I must have jumped story arcs.

Bleh. Still going to finish it, because I'm interested in the expansion of the VP universe and all that. And I'm a fan of Seraphic Gates... for all that this game's battle system doesn't lend itself to deep trekking in one. But... at this rate, the game isn't even going to equal VP2. Not what I was expecting at all.

Ouch.  Take everything NEB said and reverse it, and you have my opinion of the game.  Good stuff, not quite as good as VP1 but way better than 2, and easily the most enjoyable SRPG I've ever played.

Well, the story thing... it's because you're jumping down the path tree.  The story only flows logically if you pick your story path in C2 (that is, you either never sacrifice anyone, sacrifice one in C2 and never again to stay on the B path, or decide to be murder-happy and sacrifice as many PCs as you can and take out both Cheripha and Lockswell).  Mind, the fact that this can happen is a legitimate complaint and all, so >.>

Gameplay wise... well, opinions.  I think though that the game despite having all the trappings of an SRPG isn't at all meant to be played like one, it's meant more as a more elegant way to capture the separation of enemies and ability to maneuver around them that VP2 was shooting for.  On the other hand, I had the same problem with combos lacking fluidity so taking it as diminished compared to the others in that respect is fair.

I see your point about it not being an SRPG (which explains why a non-SRPG fan like the Captain would prefer it to other SRPGs). I disagree that it does the map part better than VP2, though. The thing about VP2 is it very quickly and efficiently let you get to the good parts, which were the VP parts. Granted, the way they implemented enemy targetting zones was screwy and I could see preferring DS for that alone, but overall, I think I value the far greater speed of VP2 better, here. Also this SRPG system didn't just come at the expense of VP2's movement (which was bleh, but over quickly) but also at the expense of VP1 and VP2's platforming. Granted, this probably means more to me than most!

Also, I did plume only one person in Chapter 2 and haven't since...

EDIT: Spoiled myself via GameFAQs, and yeah, I'm on B path, and it wasn't an arc jump. Granted, apparently Chapter 2 is different entirely, being based on your random destination choice. So it's possible Chapter 4 would make more sense if I did a different Chapter 2. Regardless, as you noted, it is within my right to mock. <_<

Idly, are both B and C endings worth seeing? I imagine A is significantly different. If I were to only get one of B and C, which would you recommend?

EDIT2: I will give the game this: barring Chapter 4 and 5 being plus sized, the game is short. This is really, really good. Games based around replays as much as this one need to be. *punts BoF5*

Huh.  Don't remember B path being so flighty.  Oh well, I never really did it straight through so.

Anyway, story-wise the paths differ in how Wyl's portrayed.  A is generally "oh wow I have monstrously fucked up and need to stop", B is "Should I... actually have agreed to this?" and C is "MWAHAHAA KILL THE VALKYRIE".  The endings are... pretty much all karmically appropriate to these mindsets.  So I think jumping down to C path at the point you're at would just make the story even more disjointed and silly, and B path has a lot more content anyway.
