Comedic storytelling shouldn't be excused from being bad because it is comedic.
Just seconding this on general principle.

SoA: I have Pirates' Wrath now. Pity the bosses. The mook at Glacias went down in two hits (Zivilyn Bane took one). Speaking of which, very pretty dungeon there. The ice area was colorful and sparkly, the city hanging upside down over an endless void was cool just for being a city hanging upside down over an endless void. "When we can see the sky through the floor, we must have reached the bottom." Heh.
I can officially "go damn well anywhere" now. Naturally, we immediately took advantage of this to shirk our plot duties and go exploring. Time to see what's above those clouds! ...Turns out there's a lot of blue up there. Granted, it
is extremely cool looking down on the whole world. Also,
random skip. It's about time. I did have the White Map before this, but it wasn't as effective at shutting down encounters as I would've liked. Now? I want to get somewhere without fights, I just go over/under the map. Anyway, spent some time rooting out discoveries (there are still six or seven I've been told about but can't find, but topping fifty or so total is good enough for now), got those two moonfish I'd left behind (seems the game's just really finicky about where you stand), then headed back to Sailor's Island to stop for the night in preparation for returning to Valua.
Suddenly,
Piastol out of nowhere. Yeah, this fight was probably supposed to happen a long time ago. I was told about the black spot thing way back around the time we first got to SI, but apparently I just never wandered through the corner of sky her ship likes to frequent. So yeah, two Pirates' Wraths and she's done. She got to use Wevli (feeble), Tempest Dance (just about 2HKO to Enrique, meh) and Eterni (whiff) before falling. And Vyse hit the damage cap overkilling her poor dog. Not very impressive, but there are, what, three fights with her? She's got time to improve.
Oh, some Wanted battles happened too. Mimic trio fight was pretty rough, had a couple resets because one thing going wrong = everyone but Vyse getting crushed. Much as I wanted to kill the Drilnos whore first, I had to make Anita top priority because Increm'd Anita Burst = everyone dies to a poke. It's an easy fight once just one of the enemies is dead, but surviving that long without my party being a complete shambles was a challenge. Which is good, because god knows the plot bosses don't have any of that going on.
I should take a moment to explain why I hate Drilnos so much. Now, randoms don't live long enough to make stat-downers worth using, and the spell never works when I really need it (I.E., bosses). This alone just makes it useless. The problem is that getting hit with it overrides any positive status effects you have on your PCs. I'd be fine with even this if the reverse also worked, but it doesn't. If you want Increm/Quika up again, you have to cure Drilnos and
then recast your buffers, which likely takes two turns since you can't count on the turn order being consistent. Having negative status take priority is just obnoxious. (Same holds true for regen/poison, of course, but this is largely irrelevant because neither status makes much of a difference).
