Snow: Well, I guess you have a point there. :( I just like the Fallout series enough that I'd like others to try it before going, "from the looks of it...", because honestly it doesn't look brilliant to me, but it does play brilliantly.

Super Mario DS: I must be doing something wrong, because for the life of me I cannot figure out how to save in this damn game, aside from gathering 5 Star Coins and opening a path, or defeating a boss the first time. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF--

You can only save after you've done one of 3 things:

1: Beaten one of the fortress-tower things (Where you fight Bowser Jr.)
2: Beaten the castle at the end of a world
3: Spent star coins to open up a pathway

I'm not sure whether I should be relieved that I wasn't doing something wrong, or be annoyed that you can't just quick-play through a level or two and then shut down because the DAMN SAVE OPTION IS SO RARE.

Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime

remembered this existed while out of town for the weekend, figured out where the slimes I was missing at midgame were (namely, I had to make a second run to the forest area), finished the game with 100% rescue. A fun, Sagetastically punny diversion, but annoyingly unbalanced at times. They're obviously not going for a challenging game, and that works fine for the on-foot (pseudopod?) sections, but they made tank battles less threatening by making them impossible to lose even if you lose all your HP (since you can easily keep the enemy raiding parties out of your tank forever while your crew throws stuff at them), so instead of just having a low threshold for challenge, there's no correlation at all between how well you play the minigame and whether you win or lose. Bleh.

Also, I seem to have almost two complete blank pages in my list of tank crewmembers despite rescuing every inhabitant of Boingburg. What's up with that?

You can get monsters to join you in the tank too.  You have to send 30 of them back to town, I think it is?  Then talk to that type of monster by their statue in the museum.

...you know, it would have been nice if somebody mentioned that. They tell you the part about getting 30 monsters to earn a statue in the museum, but said nothing about why that might not be completely pointless.

Fallout's one of the few games that put the Roleplay in Roleplaying Games. Definitely recommend it if you haven't played it yet.

Eeww... you got ROLEPLAY in my RPG...

It's twisted ideas like that which give us Silent Main characters...

I wish they'd just rename the genre to Interactive Storybook or Menu-Meta-Games or something so they'd stop pretending that Western RPGs and JRPGs have anything in common. Or -should- have anything in common.

I think if that actually happened, there might be a possibility for America to make a JRPG-style game that I like. Similarly, Japan might try making something with actual Roleplay elements for you weird people who like that sort of thing. Not that I'm judging, of course. ;)

More seriously, I'm just surprised that there's this collective agreement that JRPGs should be more 'Roleplay-like', when I'm pretty sure that they've moved away from that sort of offering a long time ago. I personally think this is a pretty good thing as it's what I find entertaining about the games. Now, if only they could actually improve the writing, JRPGs would be in pretty good shape. Until then, though, I find myself satisfied with colorful tropetastic fantasy stories and the recent trend of mixing in aspects of platforming and fighting games.

Just stop giving me Silent Main characters and forced replays to see all of the story.

Bard: I can understand you getting annoyed if people write off something you like without even knowing it just because of something they've heard (*cough SMT cough*), but I have spoken to a few good friends who are huge fans of Fallout, and I just honestly don't think it's my sort of game.
And the FIFA thing was to point out that you can say "I won't like that game" without having tried it.

In other news, Persona 4: Magatsu Inaba/Mandala asfdgshfsdjf. The enemies here are almost all ridiculously easy with the right Persona equipped... except for one. Little pink mostly-physical thing that suddenly hits with Magaru/Mabufudyne and manages to kill Souji only. Blah.
That, and I still somehow keep getting ambushed, despite hitting the enemies head on with a sword.
Maybe I'll actually have Trumpeter by the end of tomorrow...

Dissidia: Got English version on Thursday, cause it took forever for the package to arrive!  Also came with my new PSP, a 2 gig Memstick, limited edition Slip covers...except that the bundle came with cheap ass UMD Sized Cardboard cases making them useless...and A UMD OF ADVENT CHILDREN AAAWWW YEAH!!! (ok, so there's nothing wrong with getting it FOR FREE, as even without AC, I think the full package comes out to being less than buying each thing separate; Advent Children just secures you're coming out ahead on the deal.)

Anyway, I've only beaten the first 4 stories, difficulty wise, cause I figured I'd just do them in difficulty order, only realizing now that they were split up in difficulty for storyline purposes, which makes me want to punch Xer for claiming otherwise.  Just look at the initial teams (like Cloud, Fiirion, Tidus and Cecil), and what difficulty level each have, and you'll see what I mean!

Yeah, the story is cheesey, but its a cross over fighting game; you're not suppose to care about the story.  The general voice acting is good, and the characters are just fun to see interacting, or in Firion's case, "HOLY SHIT HE HAS A PERSONALITY!" Also, Emperor's voice is made of so much win in english. 

Also played a bunch of arcade mode cause hey, free Chocobo Colognes for easy levels if I want too, its quick, and easy 300 PP, not to mention instant access to villains.  Unlocked all the villains through this and story mode, in addition to getting Terra's alt costume so I can insure she's always green haired outside of plot scenes <_<

Random changes I've noticed (as in, things I'm not just taking people's words for):

WoL:
-Outside of starting with Shield of Light (Ground) in addition to his usual ones, not much has changed on his initial attacks.

Garland:
-Blaze's tracking is WAAAAY better.  It not only actually consistently hits things when they aren't dodging...it can hit things at relatively close range too!  Yeah, its no longer Kefka-like in how works, giving Garland some actual reliability on HP damage before he gets his Wind move.

Firion:
-Straight Arrow now causes stagger when blocked, instead of just plain blocking.  As a fun fact, evidently, if you block Straight Arrow at point blank range, the reflected arrow (which normally disappears almost instantly) counts as a reflected attack and Firion can receive damage from it!
-Rope Knife causes Stagger when blocked, *AND* Firion will track the enemy.  It has the same trajectory and general workings, but if the enemy moves to the right, Firion will pivot that way, and the attack moves accordingly.  IOWs, yes, it has a practical use over the normally superior Reel Axe.
-Lance Combo is now solid instead of "Abject 3rd move cause its not Sword Draw which really sucks."  Minor vacuum effect, and improved radius; that combined with its being Firion's best damage move, and the option of either launching or just extra brave damage that has high Wall Rush potential, it makes it a great Melee option, for all that you'll get more use out of the above two.
-Blizzard and Fire are faster, making him less defenseless in air!  Blizzard's ricochet effect seems to be improved enough that it can matter in small stages.

Emperor:
-Aerial Flare.  Not only is it an Air HP Attack he can fallback on, he can use it and Ground Flare at the same time, and adds to his zoning as it basically makes a part of the map something you really want to stay away from.

Onion Knight:
-No Forseeable changes.  He's more or less the same still; attacks aren't bad, but his brave damage is pitiful, and practically relies on chipping away at HP, like before.

Cloud of Darkness:
-Like Onion Knight, haven't seen any changes.

Cecil:
-Dark Lance now is aimed at the opponent vertically, instead of always going straight forward.
-Saint Fall can actually track enemies above Cecil, making it not half bad if Cecil is below the enemy.  It still has issues hitting enemies below him, despite the name.

Golbez:
-Haven't used; I do know, however, that Genesis Rock got nerfed.  If you use EX Mode to break out of it, Genesis Rock gets canceled entirely, instead of the character just avoiding the hit, and getting a moment to dodge out of it.

Bartz:
-Holy's tracking is much better, and the balls move at different speeds making dodging it somewhat more precise on timing.
-Flood got nerfed, as the second shot seems to have a maximum range relative to the first, and seems to come off slower (this is actually based off Terra's version, mind, but given this move was a direct copy of Terra's in Japan, I assume that's still the case, especially since Holy got the same exact treatment.)

Exdeath:
-His AI is dramatically better.  He'll use actual counters, and doesn't teleport around like an idiot unless you're actually far from him.  He'll actually use some of his other Brave attacks too!
-Teleport is faster and staggers when blocked.  Note that for moves that cause Stagger when blocked, you can't actually take advantage of the staggering in most cases; the recovery on the attack is pretty much equal to the stagger, so it really is just a neutral position (it mostly means "Blocking doesn't cause this character to get their asses kicked!")

Terra:
-Blizzara is much faster, and much better range.  It also is stronger by extension, since the window of when the move can hit 3 to 4 times (instead of its usual 2) is much improved.  It now is suddenly one of her best Brave Attacks instead of being kind of iffy.
-Thunder is a little faster, and seems to do a little more damage.
-See Bartz about Holy (and Holy Combo) and Flood
-Graviga tracks the enemy upon decent, instead of falling straight down (this is based off the demo, mind)
-Gliding is now much faster.

Kefka:
-Rolling Blizzaga or whatever is much faster, so the move is not total suck
-Back and Forth Firaga (or whatever its called now) is faster and much larger hit raidus.
-See Terra about gliding.
-His little creeping Thundaga more or whatever its called seems to have much increased range.

Cloud:
-Only change I saw was his aerial Brave attack, whatever its called, now attempts to follow the enemy on the second hit, instead of swinging twice in the same direction.

Sephiroth:
-Octaslash can't be blocked
-You can cancel out of Hell's Gate, getting a slash instead, which has modest range.
-Can cancel out of Heartless Angel as well.
-Scintillation has like double the range, and there's an Aerial version of it.
-Shadow Flare has a different animation to go along with its better speed
-Black Materia comes off faster in general

Squall:
-Starts with Ground Rough Divide; yes, this is a big deal cause he normally got this at level 50
-Heel Crush staggers and breaks through magic
-He has an Aerial Rough Divide now
-Rough Divide seems to have lost priority; see how it interacts with the small whirlwinds in Terra's "Tornado" for reference
-He also has an Aerial Magic attack, uses I'm unsure of (I just know it exists, IOWs)

Ultimecia:
-no Changes near as I can tell.  There are some I theorize, but they may be psychological

Zidane:
-Free Energy is a basic HP Attack now, instead of a Brave -> HP Chain
-Tidal Flame moves faster

Kuja:
-Flare Star lost tracking and range, making the move less disgusting.
-Seraphic Star actually attempts to aim at the enemy now, instead of being fired at a set trajectory; note that it still has to be precise regarding range, so the move still kind of sucks.
-Some of his Brave Attacks are blockable, when they weren't before

Tidus:
-None that I can tell, though I do know that a few of his Brave -> HP Chains were removed, and given the Zidane's Free Energy Treatment instead

Jecht:
-See Tidus; I wanna say Triumphant Grasp has better range, but unsure.

I know, these mean nothing to people who haven't played the Japanese version, but it gives you an idea of how much changed between the two versions, based off mostly just the INITIAL attacks.  Imagine some of these moves without the changes.  Also, these aren't ALL the changes, bare in mind!

Well, Grefter is just bitching about shit he hasn't even seen as usual.  Gathering minigame flat out improves gathering because it lets you choose what items you get if you want to and you can just flat out ignore it if you don't care.  Mining minigame is whatever and fishing doesn't really change much.  Seriously not a big deal and is an overall improvement over MK1 due to getting more stuff for the time you spend on it.

Hey Tal, pro tip, go fuck yourself.

Item gathering may be improved by increasing the amounts, but that doesn't make the inclusion of a mini game even remotely associated with this.  I may not have seen it specifically, but I have seen enough games in my time to be able to tell the kinds of things I will like.  I can tell you I will probably like MK2.  I will play those mini games a million fucking times and seriously not care for them at the end of the game.  Fishing mini game in MK1 was atrocious just like it was in MK3.  Edit - AI3 here obviously.  Just like mini games in oh I dunno, every other fucking RPG they come up over and over again for repetitive basic actions is.

Can we skip over the "OH MY GOD YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED THE GAME YET YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY HAVE ANY KIND OF INPUT INTO IT BY DOING A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS TO SIMILAR THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN DONE IN THE PAST BY THE VERY SAME DEVELOPER THIS TIME IT IS TOTALLY UNIQUE AND AMAZING SUPER SPECIAL" bullshit just fucking once and skip to the part where I am right, you go have a small cry and get pointlessly pissy at me where we can't have a civil basic fucking conversation for a week because I am tired of this shit every fucking time a Gust game comes out that we both play and like (or that you like because you are a weeaboo who misses his Skinner box that he was raised and bred in like in AT).

You refuse to see anything negative at all in the shit games you like, I like shit games and criticise the hell out of them because I am a fucking internets critic.  Deal with it.  Now go change your nappy.

Enchanted Arms - LORD OF EARTH! This fight needs to die. DNR. EX special that kills the girls + Atsuma, damage + MP draining in Spirit Drain and has 75% damage reduction. Even my usual fallback of solo w/th Raigar isn't working here.

Gameplaying extravaganza here... well, for me anyway.

P3: The Answer- Finally went back to this. Went through Caina, which was actively frustrating. I see what people mean about the first dungeon of the game, but I never had much trouble with it, but this one gave me fits. Especially the second section's boss.

GoC5- Played a bit while in Florida, plus a conversation about the games with Yakko and Tal made me pick it up for a while. Worked through to the Surface World. The game really does just hand you uber commanders if you take the time to look for them, but it's still pretty much Valz and Lululala vs the World. Now they just have friends.

BlazBlue- Picked this up. Somehow it's already dropped to 50 new... couldn't resist. Anyway, pretty much set on maining Jin. Beat Arcade mode with him and very nearly done with Story mode with him as well. Working on Litchi and Bang's paths as well at the moment. Bang is eh, but Litchi feels somewhat comfortable, just nowhere near ready to use her to face others. Trophy farming with Magic was fun. Learned how to get my ass kicked by a Tao at any rate as well, but it really helped in developing my play. Rachel's Float for 25 Seconds trophy was a BITCH.

MapleStory- Thanks to Laggy, I've been dragged kicking and screaming back into this, kinda. Started a new character on a new server in one of the new Cygnus Knight classes, which is basically just uber versions of the regular classes with level caps. Unfunded and 1x... man, new players these days have it waaaaaaaay easier. Not that this is a bad thing, mind. It's a lot easier to level now. Quests give more exp, better training spots, don't have to pay to travel between continents, plus there are just so many ways to make money now. At 40 though, and it's starting to slow down. Which is about normal. 40-50 is pretty much the doldrums. Used to be 30-50, but the 30's go by so fast now it doesn't even matter. It took me 4 months to get to 50 the first time. I hit 40 in less than three weeks. Not that any of the core stuff has changed... but it's definitely a step in the right direction. Now if they can only stop the ridiculous high-end power creep...

Yeah, as OK said, wasn't a high enough level. I was only Lv 60 at the start of Magatsu Inaba.
Magatsu Mandala World 4, though, and Trumpeter get! And with it, Empress S-Link complete!

All I'm saying is that if I was down to playing one of those two, I'd buy a new game.

Like the Witcher, where I am currently nailing bitches left and right while leaving the kid I'm supposed to be looking after with the girlfriend that I cheat on constantly. While I'm not doing that I fill mass graves with elf bodies.

Belated thanks to Cranbud, I think Random Consonant, and other who gave me some pointers on Exit Fate. Well, mostly that one big pointer. "Use more mages, you idiot," is basically the best way to tackle any problem you might be having in that game, I now know.

At any rate, I beat the game a few weeks ago. Final party was Daniel (who eventually comes out of an early-to-mid-game slump wherein I found him almost pathetically worthless to prove a competent fighter/mage and rather a badass), Midian (the HP is terrible, but it doesn't matter because he will destroy you with magic and his speed's serviceable), Darwin (very solid mage, hits people with a book, and I liked having someone with Scan), Reod (believe the hype! stealing, massive speed, considerable magical power, and even a decent physical when I occasionally wanted it for randoms), Frore (incredibly badass pure physical character, easily the best in the game as far as I can tell, plus I like his style/animation), and a final rotating slot where Griever/Derek/Shiro hung out. They were all three disappointing. Shiro's shtick is just incredibly good accuracy, but that's not enough to build a character on in this game. Derek has monster HP and MDef, but he can't hit the broad side of a barn. Griever has solid balanced stats and Column Strike (yay?), but didn't really stand out. I ended up using her, though, because I liked a party that had one of each elemental affinity.

The game is fun. The magic system makes you put a bit of thought into randoms and boss fights both, neither of which are anything to sneeze at to begin with. The game is pretty tough, which is a surprising and presumably deliberate choice for a Suikoden clone-type affair.

Story? Well, Suikoden clone. Cribs very heavily from Suikoden II in particular, which is frequently annoying and try-hardy but also sometimes works, particularly when it really reverses the gambit and does things like

UH SPOILER I FORGET HOW THESE TAGS WORK DURRR

actually make good on the corruption of the City-State-like entity and have you decide to rebel against it. Which was really satisfying, because otherwise everything being happy with a Kirgardian general just waltzing over to the other side would have been really irritating. That said, I wasn't entirely cool with Kirgard just blindly taking him back, but oh well. It made... enough sense, given Jovian's position of power/inherent trust of Daniel.

DURRRRRR

In general, the story had a lot of the right idea, but desperately needed an editor and a couple other people to create some sort of a more robust writing staff. One gets what one pays for, though, and in this case I feel like I have earned a tidy profit. Also it inspired me to replay....

... Suikoden II! Beat this a couple days ago. Man I love this game. I will admit that the rose-coloured glasses of delighted nostalgia are a bit cracked and smudged at this point, but even for its faults I think the game is still a wonderful piece of work. Not too much to be said about it at this point that hasn't already. But it DID inspire me to replay....

.... Suikoden III! This game is also damnably good. And the writing/translation is a lot radder than I remembered. Beat everyone's first chapter, including Thomas's (<3), just finished Chris's second and am trying to beat Yuber in Hugo's. Think I just need to sharpen up weapons and give it a second go. He's challenging without being stupidly difficult, which is a good thing and actually describes quite a bit of the game in general so far. Dammit, why couldn't the rest of the series have gotten that right? Oh well. I had forgotten a bit how groovy Nash was, and how much I like Lilly. I had not forgotten how much I like Geddoe's group and Salome and Percival, but it bears mentioning regardless.

I'm feeling the bug right now. Wouldn't be too surprised if I played Suikoden V again, next.

Pushed DQ8 over to the side a little bit. It's not bad, but KHII seems more active and interesting at the moment. So. I started up KH II. I never played Chains of Memories so I'm a bit "wtf," but whatever.

F-Zero: Downloaded and played this some on a whim. The game hasn't really aged particularly well (the fact that you can't even go back in the menu system at the start of the game is particularly notable) but it still has some pretty cool ideas. Obviously the worst in the (console) series but a fun enough diversion.

Dragon Quest 4 - I'm up to Chapter 5 now. Game still has pretty solid challenge; I died twice to C4 Balzack (aarrggh hate you Fullheal) and once to the fixed fights against monsters in the Cave of Faith or whatever it's called, and even just winning against them was pretty tense. Gameplay is Dragon Quest, which is inherently primitive and limited, but at least it does some good things with it. Maybe.

Plot on the other hand is pretty laughable, though 1990 game so it's at least expected.

Idun: CoM's a good game, and I'd recommend playing it if you can, but at the same time, you won't miss much in KH2 from not knowing it. The start seems slightly different with it, but otherwise, they're completely different stories.
I'm guessing Squenix realised that people weren't too likely to play a GBA KH when the main series was PS2. >.>

Also, I need to get hold of an emulator and some Suikoden ROMs, dammit. I'm tired of having only played S4, and I'm low on money at the moment, plus have never seen S5 in shops anyways. Blah.
I like S4. But.. I've read the S3 manga, and I like that more. And games > manga, so I can only imagine what the S3 game must be like.

CoM wouldn't have solved the wtf. And you're not missing anything, CoM is -terrible-.

The only reason to play CoM, from what I understand, is to see the Organization XIII losers start talking cryptically about random plot points sooner. Why anyone would want to do that, I have no fucking clue.

Pfft. CoM is not terrible. It's just an entirely different type of game, that's all. I, for one, definitely preferred CoM to KH1.
The reason to play CoM is for the gameplay! It's definitely, if nothing else, a lot less repetitive than KH1. >.>

P4: RAGE. "Once per battle, when you take a mortal blow, your ally will cover for you and take the hit instead!"
This is, of course, unless it's multi-target - fair enough, they're taing the damage themselves already - or you're in Rush Mode.
Wait, what? I thought Rush was just there to speed things up. I don't see why there should be such a ridiculous penalty for using something that makes things go -a little bit quicker-.

...P4's seriously dropped in my estimation due to December. ._.
